Shut down and booting-up takes longer than usual on iMac 27".

Hi there,
I have a problem with my 27" iMac (model listed somewhere), it appears to take an extraordinarily long time to boot up and shut down compared to a few weeks (or even days) ago.
At the moment, at shut-down, it hangs on the blue screen with a spinning wheel for quite a long time, which never used to happen.
At boot-up, it takes quite a bit more time to boot-up.
For comparison, it took about 10-20 seconds to boot-up previously, but now it is taking about 50-60 seconds.
All of this has happened randomly, and I have no idea what the cause is.
I bought my iMac on Black Friday 2010 from the online store.
Thanks,
Jack

Non-shutting down might indicate that the Mac is waiting for something to finish before it can complete the process, and whatever that is isn't doing so. Launch Console in Utilities and check the system logs to see what the last thing running was and perhaps that might give you a clue.

  • Why did Mountain Lion slow down my shut down and boot up time for my MacBook Pro?

I had Snow Leopard, and not Lion.  My shut down time rose from about 5 seconds to 10-15 seconds.  My start up time also increased noticeabley.  Any reason why because I thought Mountain Lion was supposed to be faster.

I have very few apps other than what came on my MBP.  I've checked most other, really dont think this is the problem.  My MBP is not junked/cluttered up.  Not many programs, just pictures, videos, and some docs.  Everything seems to work smoothly once on, but the start up and shut down times are still double what they were when I bought with snow leopard (Not Windows like, but scary close).  I cannot find any solution that will work.  My opinion, should not have to do a clean install for it to work.  Some folks have not experienced these issues, so I think its some setting or something else that is my problem.  I have 4GB RAM, and considering increasing to 8, but from what I have read else where thsi will not increase boot or shutdown, way even increase.  Right now, not sure if the new ML features out way the slow boot and shut down.

  • [Solved] Booting takes longer than usual

    Hi guys,
ran into a little problem here.
Hardware: Macbook 5,5 Arch on sdb which is a SDD, data stored on an HDD.
So since yesterday, the booting process takes very long for a SSD system. I don't really get any messages while booting, so i'm a little bit confused.
No USB devices connected, wired internet connection.
Here is the output from dmesg:

  • Shut down and boot are slow, here are the console messages

Since upgrading from Tiger, my shutdown and boot times are a bit slower. They are not painfully slow, perhaps 30-45 seconds for shutdown and 45-60 seconds for boot. However, booting in 20-30 seconds and shutting down in less time was one of the great things about OS X to me and I think I can solve the problem if someone can tell me what is wrong in these console messages:
    11/13/07 2:17:19 PM com.apple.loginwindow[36] Shutdown NOW!
11/13/07 2:17:19 PM com.apple.loginwindow[36] System shutdown time has arrived

The two lines that seem to be problematic are bold. I know CUPS has to do with printer sharing, but I don't know how to stop this. I already tried zapping PRAM and repairing permissions.
Any help in stopping the two errors above would be greatly appreciated!

My boot time went back up to 1 minute after the 10.5.1 update. Is there anything wrong with the above log?

  • Continuously re-starting or shutting down and booting up iMac

Will anything bad happen to the iMac or drive or anything like that if you restart your iMac several times every five minutes? I ask because a friend was having trouble with opening something and re-started his iMac 6 times in a row in hopes of being able to run something better. Will this have damaged anything like the hard disk or drive?
    Thanks!

    Jesse Smith wrote:
    What is processor control, though?
When you click on "Shut Down" or "Restart" in the system menu (the left corner of the menu bar), OS-X tells the Intel processor to run a program that brings the machine down gracefully -- turning things off in the proper order. Holding down the "power button" to force a shutdown does the same thing -- the button doesn't turn off the power, it just tells the processor to run the shutdown program. The program turns off the power when it's finished.
OTOH, if you just "pull the plug," everything suddenly loses power without having a chance to "tidy up" before the lights go out. If that happens in the middle of a partially-completed write to disk, you can easily end up with a corrupted file system. No permanent hardware damage, but the machine might not be able to reboot -- until you re-install the OS.

  • Infopackage takes longer than usual

    Hi
I've got an Infopackage that normally loads at 7 mins long.
But intermittently (e.g. once a week), the loading will take more than
    1 hour.
May I know what is the possible cause for such problems?

    1. Limit the amount of created data packages for each load between 1000 -1500 as described in below mentioned SAP OSS note:
892513 - Consulting: Performance: Loading data, no of pkg, req size
Note: 1000-1500 = sum of data packages over all data targets, i.e. with three targets 350-500 packages
How to limit the amount of data packages for the delta load:
Go to transaction RSA1 select your dedicated infopackage -- menue-- DataS. Default Data transfer --enter the max. nummber of data packages to be created for each delta load.
    2. Global level :Use Transaction RSCUSTV6 for changing configuration setting for all the infopackages globally :
(i).Frequency with which status Idocs are sent : It means how many data-IDocs are described by one Info-IDoc.In simple terms after how many data idocs 1 info idocs to be sent .The larger the packet size for a data IDoc, the smaller you should set the frequency. By doing this, you make it possible to get information on the respective data load status in relatively short time periods when uploading data. You should choose a frequency between 5 and 10 but not greater than 20.
(ii)Datapacket size (Number of Data Records per Package) The basic setting should be between 5000 and 20000 depending on how many data records you want to load
.Recommendation :You should not divide up the quantity of data into too large a number of packets since this reduces performance when uploading. The number of data packets should not be more than 100 per loading process.
(III) ROIDOCPRMS : In order to make the RSCUSTV6 settings work you also need to do the related setting in ROIDOCPRMS in source system .
    3. Increase the parallelization of the infopackage if possible

  • Startup Takes Longer Than Usual

Lately, my MacBook Pro is taking longer to startup than usual. The initial grey apple logo screen is taking a good 10-15 seconds when it used not to. Does anyone know if this has anything to do with recent software/firmware updates???

  • Boot Problem! Slow start up, shut down and wake from sleep mode.

I have a MBP late 2009. I used it a long time whit Snow Leopard, few month ago i did an upgrade to Mavericks.
To start up it takes 30-40 seconds until appear the apple logo. Then 2 minutes more to start up the sistem.
When I wake the machine from sleep mode it takes 40 seconds to be working.
    Shut down 40 seconds.
Even sometime it get frezze using only Safari.
    Things I have tried:
    Reinstall Snow Leopard (clean install)
    Install Mavericks (clean install)
    Replace the HD
    ¿Any idea?
    Sorry for mi poor English

    Chepoka,
have you ensured that all of your installed software is compatible with Mavericks?
If you boot into Safe mode, does it still take 40 seconds to awaken from sleeping, or to shut down? (It will take longer to start up in Safe mode because it will perform “sanity checks” on your boot disk.)
If you have a bootable external disk with Mavericks installed, use Startup Manager to boot from the external disk. Does it take just as long to boot, awaken from sleep, and shut down from the external disk as it does from the internal disk?

  • My IBOOK has shut down, and will not start back up

ok here is what has happened. yesterday my 1.2ghz g4 ibook started randomly shutting down. it would shut down and it would take a while of me pushing the power button to get it to start back up. when it would come on, it would switch between charging and not charged quite rapidly even though my power cord was in. now however, it has shut down and will not start up. the battery is fully charged. anyone have any ideas?

I'm telling you. I have lost all faith with Apple. The old iBook I had, 800MHz G4, simply worked fine with no problem waking up or starting up, although it's just a bit slow. Now, I am super frustrated when it just couldn't wake up, either with the sleep light flashing or not, ie it's black screen initially and when I press the Power button once to get it back to life, it just stays black!!!
So the only thing to do is to force power down by pressing the Power button for 10 seconds. Then I press the Power button once to start up, but it just stays black screen. I've left my iBook in that state for a day now, hoping that it will come back alife. But no! And the worst is, I had a similar problem starting up from wake just the day before. I called the Help Desk and they advised me step by step, from taking out the battery, to pressing OptionsCommand+PR, and OptionsCommand+OC, and doing Apple Hardware Test. The iBook seems to just work fine while on the phone with them. And barely 3 hours later, the thing just couldn't wake up. I've powered down and up many times now, and I've left it powering up, but still black screen till now (one day already).
Finding out about resetting PMU on the support page, I've also tried that, but it still can't work.
And you know what? I've sent this unit for repair 3 times already! First they say it's the HDD problem, so they changed that. Then when it still happened, they say it's the logic board problem, so they changed that for me. And again when it happened, they changed another logic board for me. So now, it's the fourth time, what do you think I should do? I don't think going back changing another logic board will help!
I am in fact ****** off! If Macs are great, then why me? Why my iBook? I am telling this forum that we cannot accept a big corporation giving us sub-standard products. I've since read this forum carefully and found that many of us faced the same problem! We just cannot sit down idly and let the company get away with it. This is a warning to fellow users out there that face this same problem. Let us voice out our frustrations and make Apple give us some compensation for it. I say this because I depend on my laptop iBook for presentation to clients, and this happened exactly twice when I was in front of my clients. I don't mind losing face but can Apple compensate me for my loss of business and future business from my clients?
Voice out strongly your unhappiness to Apple now!

  • Since upgrading to OS 8.0.2 my ipad2 freezes, slows down, safari takes forever to open, the celluar network goes to No Service and the only way to fix it is to reboot it and this takes longer than before.  Has Microsoft taken over Apple software?

SInce upgrading to OS 8.0.2 my ipad 2 freezes, slows down, safari takes forever to open pages, cellular network goes to No Service requiring a reboot (and this takes longer than before), in summary, I now have a fancy paperweight, i used to love my ipad.  I feel as if Microsoft has taken charge of the Apple Software Division.

Sorry if someone sees this post in a different thread; Just want to get some additional exposure.. Who knows, maybe someone from Apple will take note..
The glitchy, unresponsive, slow and outright crashes are something you would expect in a less superior product.  I paid what I consider a premium because of the perceived integrity of the company and quality of their products. I am not going to go as far to say Apple ***** and so do their products; but they have to to a better job of acknowledging problems and providing recourse.  Right now, it "feels" like they don't care about existing customers.  I am not sure of the exact #'s, but I believe products like the Ipad2 represent a significant population of their existing Ipad product base.
So what is my specific rant; If Apple is going to take a long time, or worst, NOT fix the problems introduced in IOS 8 for IPAD  2, give us the option of going back to IOS 7.  I would say most everyone was extremely happy with their product running under that OS and would migrate back in a heartbeat.  By blocking this option, it feels like Apple is saying that the only recourse is to live with crappy performance, wait forever without any real news, or throw away your Ipad 2 and buy a newer model.  Right now this is 100% completely unacceptable, and I, as will thousands of others, will watch how this unfolds when we do buy new products.  Most technology products only have short, finite lifespan and I would think it is at very least very important to Apple to retain customer base in a highly competitive marketplace.  I'm done...

My MacBookPro (mid 2012) will not complete the boot process. Yosemite's progress widget gets about 1/3 to 1/2 way across when the logo disappears and the screen goes all white for 10-15 secs, then the machine shuts down and restarts. This sequence will repeat seemingly forever unless I shut it down manually.
I upgraded to Yosemite from Mountain Lion a couple months ago, skipping Maverick completely, and I've done any associated updates that Apple told me about. I don't recall which version of Yosemite I have, but I'm sure it is the "latest and greatest".
I've tried re-starting in Safe Mode / Safe Boot and that does the same thing as described above except without the endless restarts. Instead of restarting at some point, SafeBoot proceeds to the white screen and then it hangs until I restart it manually. (I've waited as long os 20-30 minutes with no response).
When I tried the option-command-p-r key combo I never get any chimes or other noises besides the original 1 time boot sound that you would expect to get when starting up a macbook pro.
I was using the mac quite normally (meaning I was doing work I normally do on it and there was no indication of anything wrong) immediately prior to this happening.
The machine is BootCamp(ed) with Windows 8.1 which I use from a VMWare virtual machine instead of natively so that I can have both OSes running at the same time. I also think this is unrelated to my problem. I have been using this setup for more than 2 years.
My upgrade to Yosemite was uneventful and I thought it went well and was very smooth. I don't want to lead attention away from Yosemite, but at this point my problem does not seem related to the upgrade.
    Any help is appreciated.

Install or Reinstall OS X from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

It's because the PowerMac G5 had HUGE bandwidth with a fat BUS on each processsor so they could run hard, hot and heavy.
It's not so with the Intel processors which are multi-core and share a common bus thus bottleneck.
The newer Intel processors can do more work on the CPU, but when it comes to in/out they are s-l-o-w.
I've had a wickedly fast dual processor (not dual core) G5, RAID 0 pair of 10,000 RPM drives as boot and a fast video card, I could do a lot very very fast.
You'll likely have to upgrade to Final Cut X to get more cores utilized, prepare to cry a little bit, Apple is working on the features they stripped out of it to make amends to pro users who complained loudly. (all over TV too)

  • When i take photos or videos on my ipod touch with the camera, then i plug it into the computer to sync, the computer shuts down and this blue screen comes up saying "an error has occured" and a heap of other stuff.

When i take a photo or a video using the camera on my ipod touch, the computer (windows xp) shuts down and a blue screen comes up saying "an error has occured" and a heap of oth stuff in white. It doesn't wipe the memory or anything off the ipod. Whenever i sync my ipod without photos or videos it works fine. It also doesn't mind me taking photos off itunes to put on the ipod. I have had a look around and a couple of people say reinstall itunes, but i don't know if i will lose all my songs and apps. Any suggestions of help?

Removing all Apple related software and reinstalling iTunes should bring all needed drivers back: Removing iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows XP
Also check for new driver updates for Windows, especially if you have a webcam installed.
iTunes Store purchases or songs imported from CDs are saved in your My Music folder by default and are not deleted by removing iTunes. While it is highly unlikely that you will lose any contents of your iTunes Library when following these steps, it is always a good idea to ensure that your iTunes library is backed up. If you're unsure how to backup, see iTunes: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive.
