Shut down dialog box

On an intermittent basis (but every day) I am getting the shutdown dialog box appearing accompanied by the voice instruction requesting whether I want to shut down the computer down. Despite selecting cancel each time the box still pops up again. This can go on for several iterations.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance
Roger

I've never heard of that happening. My best guess would be that the power button is faulty or sticking or something along those lines. If that is the case, you could take it to the Apple Store, but the experience tends to be that they can't recreate any "intermittent" errors, so try to find some way of documenting it if you can.

  • Shut down dialog box constantly pops up

I have a macbook air running Lion that constantly brings up the shut down dialog box.  When I click cancel it goes away for a few seconds but then returns.  Any one else have this problem or know how to solve it?
    Thank you for any help.

I took the macbook to a repair place that was not an apple store but did repairs on macs.  They said it was the power button itself actually.  They had to replace the keyboard though.  It works totally fine now and they guaranteed it for a year.  It was a quick repair. SADLY it cost around $400.   Interestingly the repair person cautioned me to be careful of heat, to use the machine on solid surfaces and not let it overheat.
Just FYI,  when the lap top was BRAND NEW it had a funky keyboard problem, when you hit a button it would do other things.. so they replaced the keyboard for free, it was only a few weeks old then.  Now when this problem cropped up I took it back to apple since it had been less than a year since that replacement.  They claimed the laptop had water damage based on some kind of funky stupid sticker, the kind they stick in cell phones.  There was never any water spills on the laptop. I'm a grown person, if I had spilled something on it I would have suspected that caused the problem    Since when did THAT start...seemed really really like scam to me.  So...I think I got a lemon from the start.  This is second keyboard in less than a year.  But, it was really the powerbutton.

  • Removing "Shutting down" dialog box in Energy Saver mode?

I've got an iMac using 10.4.11 running as a kiosk to play a DVD in an exhibit we have. Using the energy saver panel I can set it to start up and shut down at appropriate times. But about 5 minutes prior to shutting down there is a dialog box that pops up saying "This computer is scheduled to shut down in X minutes." It has the radio buttons to "shut down now" or "cancel," but is there anyway to remove the warning entirely? Since I've already scheduled it to shut down I don't want it to tell me it's doing what I told it do do and the box covers the screen while it's running.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

You might be able to schedule an Applescript via iCal to do the shutdown.
There's a possible Applescript listed here:
    http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/forums/viewthread/3605/#36954
and some advice about using iCal for running scripts here:
    http://www.hawkwings.net/2005/12/09/make-an-ical-event-run-an-applescript/
I'm not very familiar with this sort of thing, and I don't know if it would work.

Should only sleep if you hold for 1 sec and release
The shutdown dialog should pop up after hoiding for 4 sec (and if you continue to hold with the dialog box active you will force a shut-down (don't do that)

  • Acrobat 8.1.2 Stops Working When Opening a Drop-Down Dialog Box

Whenever I try to open a drop-down dialog box in Acrobat the application stops working and Vista requests that the application be closed and that I will be notified of a solution when one is available. I've experienced the problem for six months. I must now solve this problem.
I've already tried repairing the Acrobat installation without any improvement. What should I do next?

Thanks, seems to solve some of the problem, perhaps I need to uncheck more in this dialogue box...  May be 'a' correct answer but not the complete solution.  Anyway if all I need to do is uncheck a choice in a dialogue box then it must be a bug or driver incompatability as there seems to be no reason why I shouldn't be able to use 2D graphics acceleration.
Works if you highlight several PDFs in File Manager and then right click and 'Open with Adobe Acrobat', the error still occurs if I drag these files into an open instance of Acrobat beyond two files.  Also seems to be more of a problem if one of the files is a 'colour document ' or 'greyscale document' scanned by Acrobat itself.

  • When I attempt to access my IRA account on line, I get a message saying that the web site requires a client certificate. The certificates listed in the drop down dialog box don't get accepted, even though one is indicated as valid and good until 10/2014.

When I attempt to access my IRA account on line, I get a message saying that the web site requires a client certificate. The certificates listed in the drop down dialog box don't get accepted, even though one is indicated as valid and good until October 2014. I contacted the IRA account managment company and they sais it's an Apple issue. Any ideas?

Some websites require a special client certficate for access. If you don't have that certficate, you'll have to contact the site operator to find out how to get one.
Sometimes the problem is caused by a web server that is configured to request an optional client certificate. Safari treats the request as mandatory. In that case, other browsers such as Firefox and Chrome may be able to connect to the site, because they ignore the request.
The first time you were prompted for a certificate, you may have clicked through a dialog that requested access to the Apple certificate in your keychain that is used to secure the iMessage service. In that case, you may be able to regain access to the site in Safari by doing as follows.
    Back up all data.
Double-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    com.apple.idms.appleid.prd
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
Paste into the search field in the Keychain Access window by clicking in it and pressing the key combination command-V. An item may appear in the list of keychain items. The Name will begin with string you searched for, and the Kind will be "certificate."
Delete the item by selecting it and pressing the delete key. It will be recreated automatically the next time you launch the Messages or FaceTime application.
The next time you visit a site that prompts for an optional client certificate, cancel out of the prompt. You may have to do this several times before the server stops asking.

  • Shut Down issue - box appears and disappears quickly

Grandson downloaded MineCraft on my MAC.  I thought I had deleted all of it.  Now when I shut down, a box appears for a split second and I think it is asking if I want to abort the download.  It comes and goes very quickly.  How can I get the shutdown to stop so I click the "abort" tab?  Is there someplace else that would show me what this is doing?
    Thanks for any suggestions.

  • Collect info before shutting down production BOX (Solaris 10)

I am learning Solaris. I need some help.. In my current company there will be some maintenance work on our production Solaris server (OS version Solaris ). So we need to shutdown the server.
1.what are the output i need to take before the shutdown .I have collected some o/p except these if you think i need to collect more o/p please let me know.
    df -h
    mount
    cat /etc/vfstab
    cat /etc/path_to_inst
    showrev -p
    ifconfig -a
    netstat -in
    netstat -rnv
    prtconf -pv | grep version
    cfgadm -al
    prtpicl -v
    iostat -E |grep -i error
2.From #zoneadm list i have seen that , there is a childzone. We have ALOM console. when we will start the global zone server from ALOM console i will fire #poweron , but how i will start the childzone .
    Regards,

My recommendation would be to download/install SUNWexplo which is now part of the Solaris Tool Bundle. Run an explorer and save the output. That way you will have an explorer output if you have to open a case with the Big-O.

  • Are you sure you want to shut down now? repeatedly appears spontaneously.

Shut down dialog box appears spontaneously anytime. I cancel, but a few minutes later it reappears. How to stop?

    Hi Richard
Do you have just a single user account on your mac?
The first thing to do, is to check if the problem is unique to your user account, or happens on others - this will establish whether or not the problem is one of user settings, or something common to the whole system.
If you don't already have a second user account to try, go to System Preferences-Accounts & create a new account by clicking the + icon at bottom left ( if this is 'greyed out' you'll need to click the padlock icon & enter the Admin password first.
After you've created a new account, Log out via the Apple menu-Log Out.... & log in using the new account.
Let us know what you find out.

  • Dialog Boxes in TestStand Seq Editor Scroll

I am relatively new to TestStand and I have a question. I noticed that the drop-down dialog boxes in TestStand only drop one item and then force you to scroll through all the options using tiny arrows. Is there any way to make these dialog boxes drop down the way they would in a normal program (show all options). This is worse than Microsoft's "personalized menus" option.
    Thanks,
    Toby

    Toby,
I am running Windows XP on my end, and the combo boxes work as expected.  When you click the arrow, all of the options are listed.  I'm sorry again for the inconvenience!

  • Can't Shut Down once accessed Mail

Once I run Mail 2.0, and go to shut down the computer, the shut down dialog appears and I OK it. Then, nothing else happens. The computer freezes. The desktop picture stays on the screen and the only way to shut down the computer is to hold the power button in.
    Any ideas?

No, I even turned off automatic mail download to see if that would help.

  • MBP shuts down when touched if not on a flat surface?

    Good afternoon,
After recently replacing my damaged upper case/keyboard on my unibody macbook pro, now if I'm using it on my lap, or in bed, or basically anywhere other than a hard, flat surface like my coffee table, countertop, or desk, if I even slightly press anywhere on the upper case, the shut down dialoge will appear, and if I continue to hold, it will shut down as if the power button were pressed.
I carried it in my backpack on my way to work last week, and it shut down and started itself about 12 times from the walk from the train station to the building.
What gives?  I've opened it up and checked the ribbon cable for power - it's seated properly.  Is something obstructing the button, perhaps?

Assuming you did the repair yourself, it seems clear enough that either you got a faulty top case to replace the damaged one, or else you didn't get everything back together again quite right. You may want to take it apart again and then reassemble it carefully. I don't know whether you had any instructions to refer to when you disassembled it the first time, but you can find some here that may be useful:

  • Need to unmount air drive upon shutting down computer?

    stupid question time.
I just put a new extreme in as my base station and have a printer and a 500g Lacie HD connected to the extreme through a hub.
Also connected to two different express units to extend the network and stream iTunes to two different entertainment centers.
All four Macs in the house now hooked up and functioning and can print and see the HD and all its files.
When the HD is turned on it now autoloads on each box as it connects to the network.
I've been trashing or unmounting the Lacie each time I shut down each box just as I would if it were wired directly to the box via USB.
Is this unmounting step necessary, or can I just shut down the box w/o that step?
If I need to unmount each time can someone tell me what setting I change to avoid having the drives mount automatically?
The rest of the users in the household will never remember this step and I'm bound to forget as well.
    regards
    G4 powerbook 12", IBook 12", G4 mirror, IMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Everything is wireless w/ extreme n11 and 2 express units

    Thanks for the info.
Good to know, no harm done by not ejecting the drive.
To seek further clarification if I may, physically turning the drive on and off as long as it's not in active use w/ one of the Mac's on the network is ok?
One further item. Is there a setting change I can make that will prevent the networked HD from automatically mounting?
    Cheers.

  • Asset Shut down Process

    Hi
Can anyone explain the Asset Shut down process in SAP?  The business requirement is to stop depreciatin depreciation for a time period if the asset relates to product specific machine and is currently not in use.  Start depreciating the Asset again when it is put to use
I checked the Asset Shut down process (checkbox in Asset master) and changing Dep key to 0000. System does not calculate depreciation for the time interval i give in shut down period but once i uncheck the box and change dep key, system posts depreciation for the current period as well as for the period it was shut down
Is there a way to avoid depreciation posting for the period it is shut down?  Am i missing something here or the correct process will be to to do an asset transfer to a non-depreciable asset class for shut down period and then again bring it back to original asset class
    Please advice
    Shiv

    Hi PAul
Thanks for the response.  I did check Asset Shutdown checkbox on the time dependent tab and in addition changed the depreciation key.  With this setting system do not calculate depreciation when i run AFAB.  The moment i uncheck this box, system posts depreciation even for the shut down period.  Is there a way to avoid depreciation for the period when it was shut down even after unchecking the Asset shut down check box
    Thanks

  • Slow dropdown of dialog box

My problem is the drop/roll down dialog box that asks me if I really want to make a change or where to store item such as when using add bookmarks or when auto fill asks if I want to save password, etc. etc. It drops/rolls down real slow and after I've made my selection it rolls back up real slow. During this time the beach ball is spinning. I have two users on this MAC and only my user has this problem.
Also after restarting the MAC the dock sometimes acts up and losses its memory and comes back as the default settings. The dashboard screen corners sometimes loss their memory.
One thing I noticed is that when I open system preferences and select the dock that the display is not complete. I've notice a small piece of the letter m in the word bottom and a small piece of the letter g in the word right are missing.
    Thanks for any help.

    Hi Bill,
First idea that comes to mind: did you happen to modify the default "display of sheets speed", using OnyX, Cocktail, TinkerTool or such an utility?
But then from the other problems you describe, it looks like there are some corrupted preferences or caches in your user account's Library.
    - Firstly: Run Preferential Treatment, hopefully it finds a bad .plist file, so trash it, logout/login, that's it.
    - Then: a good start, hopefully this will suffice, is to run some maintenance.
    1) Run manually the three nightly automatic "cron" scripts:
Open Terminal and paste this command
    sudo periodic daily weekly monthly
hit Enter, type your password, wait for the prompt to appear again (you can use your computer in the meanwhile), quit Terminal.
    2) Repair Permissions: with Disk Utility (from the Utilities folder), First Aid.
    3) Repair Disk: Restart from your Tiger install DVD, with the C key depressed. From the Utilities menu, open Disk Utility, and run Disk Repair. If it finds something, rerun it until it finds there were nothing to be repaired.
Let us know at this point if the problem persists.
If it persists, you still can remove your user's and fonts' caches, and look for specific corrupted .plist files that Preferential Treatment would have missed.
    Good luck!
    Axl
