Shut down issue on 27" iMac running Windows XP using VMWare Fusion 3

I'm running Windows XP on a 27" iMac using VMWare Fusion 3. When I try to shut down the Mac system without using Windows, a dark (not black) screen covers the screen from top to bottom and presents me with a screen, stating in multiple languages that I must press the power button for 5 seconds and then restart the Mac. Then the iMac will close normally.
However, if I run both the Mac system and Windows, and then close Windows, VMFWare Fusion 3, followed by the Mac system, the iMac shouts down normally.
What's going on? Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone have a solution?

I run XP under Fusion 3 and have not seen this issue. What you are getting is a Kernel Panic. There should be more information in your console logs about the reason.
Here is some info on KPs to help you.

  • Am currently running Windows 7 (under VMWare Fusion 5.x) on a Macbook Pro. When running Windows 8 Upgrade ***'t, I get a Secure Boot compatibility notification

The Microsoft Upgrade Assistant identifies several issues related to compatibility of my system with a Windows 8 upgrade which I'm considering on my Macbook Pro (which is runnng OS X 10.8.2).  The message indicates that there is a firmware incompatibility with Microsoft's recently introduced Secure Boot.  Is there a resolution on the Apple side?  If there is not and none can be expected, does this rule out installation of Windows 8 altogether on my system?

Given that what the MUA is seeing is a virtual computer created by the Fusion environment, the problem lies more in VMWare's realm, rather than Apple's. Which would be the case if you were running on BootCamp instead.
Am running Fusion 4 and haven't upgraded (long story), so I have no knowledge if the latest update to Fusion 5 already incorporates the Windows 8 profile when creating, updating or running a VM, so as to satisfy MS's paranoid requirements. So, assuming you are running Fusion 5, maybe checking in VMWare's forums may yield more up to date info.
OTOH, given that MS is betting the whole farm on Win8, would not suprise me in the least that they would shut down virtualization support in all but a special, more expensive, Win8Virtual edition.......
Edit: BTW, the latest Oracle VirtualBox does incorporate Win8 profiles in both 32 and 64 bit versions, so it would not suprise me that the latest Fusion 5 did as well.

  • How do I activate Windows 8 using vmware fusion on my MacBook Pro?

I have a MacBook pro and there are a few Windows programs that I need to run. So I purchased VMWARE Fusion 5 and Windows 8 pro. I installed both with no issues except now I'm being prompted to activate windows. When I go to activate it with the product key, it says that the product key is only able to be used for upgrading, but not a clean install. I'm not sure what I need to do now. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Yes as with Windows 7 if you used a Upgrade Win 7 disc it won't WANT To Activate and to get around it you do another install of Win 7 over the top of the original Win 7 install and it make it look like you are Upgrading and allows you to use an Upgrade key.
MS really screwed up with Win 8. There really isn't any FULL VERSION Windows 8 install DVDs. They are all Upgrade DVDs no matter how much you pay for it. So to do a Clean install, on real hardware or in a Virtual Machine, you have to jump through some hoops.

  • Ctrl+Alt+End in Remote Desktop Running Windows XP with VMWare Fusion

I am using remote desktop on Windows XP in a VMWare virtual machine on my MacBook Pro. When the remote computer I'm connecting to times out and locks the screen, I need to send ctrlaltend to get back to the login dialog to unlock the screen (ctrlaltdel gets processed by the local windows box and never passed through so ctrlaltend is the appropriate sequence in remote desktop). Only one problem ... my MacBook Pro keyboard doesn't have an End key (or any other key that maps to it as far as I can tell) ... neither does the bluetooth wireless keyboard I use. So how do I send ctrlaltend? Anybody else run into this and find a satisfactory solution short of disconnecting remote desktop and logging in all over again?

That's weird.. I use RDC on my Vista's VM all the time and Ive never encountered this issue.
Try running the RDC in full screen, so that the Ctrl-Alt-Del will go to the RDC.
You can close the RDC window, and change the Options "Send Windows Combination Key" either to the RDC or the VM, or while the RDC in full screen.

  • My imac 20.5" is shutting down unexspectedly after about 10-15 minutes of use.

My Imac shuts down unexspectedly after about 10-20 minutes of use.  If I unplug the power and wait for a period of time it then boots back.  Not sure if there is some type of sensor that detects heat and then shut down the computer as a safegurad. Coudl the sensor or some other sensor be decting a situation that automatically shuts down the computer?

That's extremely unfortunate. From what I've seen, this could likely be a logic board problem. Just to make sure it is not some kind of software issue, do you have another computer that you could download a linux distro such as Ubuntu? If you do, please get a blank CD or DVD, and burn the distro of linux to it (but not just like you'd burn a normal file, if your on a mac, you do it by opening the DMG (linux distro) that you downloaded with Disk Utility, then burn it from there. If you have a PC, I can give you further instructions, or you can follow the instructions for burning the CD on Ubuntu's website (http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download) and scroll to step 2, or you can order a free ubuntu cd, but that can take weeks to arrive.
After you have your CD burnt, insert it into your iMac, restart your iMac, and boot from your optical drive during boot by holding down the C key as the computer is starting up. Eventually, the Ubuntu main install screen appears, and select, using the arrow keys and the enter key, the option for trying Ubuntu on your computer before installing. This will start up a live environment of linux that is running on your computer off of your RAM and off of the CD, but has nothing to do with your hard drive. If there is no shutting-down issue in Ubuntu, then you could try mounting your main hard drive from linux, getting all the files you need either uploaded to the internet or copied to an external drive, then re-installing your iMac's software from the original restore discs, then installing all of your software again. If you have a program from Adobe that you paid for (aka not Flash player and stuff like that) say, Photoshop, you need to deactivate your Photoshop license before you restore your operating system, or else you'll have to contact Adobe support because your product may complain, on reinstallation, that your license is already in use.
If indeed the shut-down happens while you have Ubuntu booted up, then it is a hardware issue, such as the logic board, in which case your best option would be to take it to Apple and have it fixed, especially if the iMac is still under warranty (Applecare, considering the age of your iMac if it is not one of the 21.5 or 27 inch). Replacing the logic board yourself would involve a lot of work on your part, and you would likely break another of the delicate parts inside of the iMac if you don't have the proper tools and aren't too caught up with the anatomy of your iMac.

  • X201 - New Shut Down Issue

    Hello,
Before anyone shouts I have read through the current ongoing issue with x201s randomly shutting themselves down.
    My issue is slightly different;
I've created an image using KBOX2000 (image consists of Windows XP SP3, IE7, Office 2003 all latest Windows/Microsoft updates). Once the image is downloaded, sysprep runs, the laptop successfully joins the DOMAIN and everything seems fine. However, if I try to shut down or restart the laptop the window appears informing me that Windows in shutting down, the screen then goes blue and stays blue (waited for over an hour !). I have to physically powerdown the laptop using the power button.
I've since tried installing some recommended updates after running TVSU, but every time these installation fails. An option is given to me to "install manually" but clicking on this link does nothing.
Has anyone experienced this issue ?
    Many Thanks,
    Steve

Sounds like you have an application or program or windows explorer itself not shutting down properly.
Check the event viewer in system tools, software environment, might give you a clue.
The events in there that have to do with windows not shutting down properly might be because of you having to manually having to shut it down. Focus on anything having to do with programs or applications not shutting down properly.
Right before you shut it down next time, open task manager and see if there is anything under applications that is still running.

  • .Mac Auto Syncing of iDisk hindering Restarts/Shut Downs on new Intel iMac?

I have been experiencing a Restart/Shut Down reliability issue with my new iMac and Leopard 10.5.1. This evening an Apple rep I know pointed me to a work-around in Apple Discussions:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5957261&#5957261
This thread notes the discovery by one user that iDisk automatic syncing is not working reliably, and is preventing consistent restarting/shutting down of your Mac. Although, syncing has been working reliably for me both for .Mac stuff, and the iDisk itself, if you do a Get Info on your iDisk it reports, at least for me, that its capacity is 1TB, with 466GB available. I have only the standard 10GB .Mac account, and only 5GB of that is allocated to my iDisk, so something is clearly amiss with the .Mac iDisk setup (iDisk Get Info reports correctly on my G5 Macs w/Leopard), as being reported from the .Mac server. If you check your Console logs, you may also see this recurring error message, which is reporting a syncing error, although my syncs have, as I've said, been working correctly:
    11/25/07 9:11 PM FileSyncAgent192 MKCOL /.FileSync (FAILED), httpStatusCode:405, errorType:100, transactionState:5, txnId:3846B904-9ABB-40E5-9928-B9233FAC05D2, auto-retries=0, manual-retries=0
To summarize, if you turn off your iDisk in your System Preferences/.Mac/iDisk preference pane, you'll have no problems restarting/shutting down. You may also need to do the power management reset (turn off Mac, unplug all devices and power for 15 seconds, reconnect, and start up) and the parameter RAM reset (reboot while holding down the cmd-opt-P-R keys). You can do this in one restart cycle, if you like. After that, restarts/shutting down has worked perfectly for me.
Of course, I actually USE my iDisk, and will be leaving it on. But, at least I know now how to work around the restart/shut down issue. (Note: this morning my iMac had locked up, after the iDisk mounted/unmounted repeatedly during the evening, so I rebooted and switched iDisk syncing to manual. More to follow...)
I hope Apple adds this fix to their 10.5.2 update next month.
Note: This is such an important issue, that in addition to adding it to a reply in another Shut Down thread, I thought I'd post it as a separate topic here.

MacOS X updates have resolved this issue.

    If Windows doesn’t install properly
Verify that you’re using an original, full version of the 64-bit version of Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Ultimate, Windows 8, or Windows 8 Pro.
Restart your Mac and hold down the Option key until one or more disk icons appear on your screen. Insert the Windows installation disc into the optical drive or insert the USB flash drive with Windows into a USB port on your Mac. Select the Windows installation disk icon, then click the arrow beneath it. Quickly press any key on your keyboard to start the installer. Follow the onscreen instructions to repair or reinstall Windows.

  • Display crashed - 2008 iMac running Windows 7

    Hi there,
I have a later 2008 iMac running Windows 7 on an Nvidia 8800gt. I've been using the Windows side only for playing games, and have been doing so for about a year now. Everything has worked fine until today running Far Cry 2. The display started to stutter, then froze up. I rebooted, and it did this again, eventually crashing out of Windows.
Long story short, when I turn the iMac on now the grey screen is covered in green pixelated lines, and it won't show anything else. Did I finally kill the graphics card, or do I have bigger issues?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hmm...looks like you've been bitten by the "weak NVIDIA chip die" issue that so far has not been confirmed in desktops.
During the NVIDIA chip scandal of 2006-2008, an investigation was launched (media source I can't recall) which found a fair number of GeForce 8/9 chips also fell to the same supplier's mistake that crippled countless notebooks.
The best you can do is to bring the unit over to your local Apple Authorized gurus (including Apple Stores) and have them check it out.  You can tell them that you suspect a bad GPU.  I'm not sure if you'll have to pay for it, though if you bought AppleCare, you'd still be covered today.

If you are not bothered by the shutdown problem, then you should leave it alone.
If you are willing to risk and re-installing doesn't takes up your time then you can try altering the registry.
If you think that you are already being bother by many other problems rather than this and you have the time to do a clean shave, by all means go for full format as a housekeeping.

  • Random shut down issue

So I have a Macbook 13" 1.83 Ghz Core Duo, running 10.6.2 with 2gb of (user installed) RAM. Minus a defective battery issue last year (the battery swelled to the point where my trackpad wouldn't work) which apple replaced for free out of warrantee, I have had no issues.
Out of the blue, I've been experiencing random shut down issues of sorts. If I have the computer plugged in it works fine. Sometimes though, the computer will randomly shut down after being unplugged. I tried reseting the SMU but it didn't seem to do anything.
Another odd thing - I calibrated the battery with the computer on an incline on my desk to keep it cool in case it was an issue of over heating. The computer charged fully, and then drained it's charge to 0% and went to sleep as it should.
But once I charged it up about halfway again, unplugged it, and put it on my lap, it shut off within 2 minutes. I'm well out of my warrantee so any user suggested diagnostic tips would be appreciated! I've included the battery info for good measure (btw the battery is not even a year old).

How do I change the default on shutting down Lion to NOT relaunch open windows? And how can I have Safari always open in full screen mode? I have to set it every time I open Safari.

The feature you are talking about in System Preferences does work and is not related in any way to the one at startup.
One restores the windows of an application you've quit, the other reopens all windows you had open at shutdown or restart.
Why should "I" have to constantly turn off a checkbox when I shutdown the system?
You don' t have to.  Did you have a look at my post just above yours?  With a double click you can have your restart without opening the last open windows.  That's less than clicking the apple icon and selecting "restart" or "shut down" and then clicking "Restart" or "Shutdown" again.

  • HT1349 New 27 inch Thunderbolt 2nd monitor not recognized by 27inch imac running windows 7.

I have a 27 inch imac running windows 7 and just purchased a 27 inch Apple thunderbolt display to use as a second monitor. Ive connected the second monitor via a thunderbolt cable however it is not being recongnized by the imac on windows 7.   The screen is just black. I've been to the Multiple monitors setup screen in the windows control panel and it does not detect the second monitor.   I have boot camp version 5.05033 installed which I installed today.   If I run the IOS 10 operating system the second display works OK.
The graphics card is a AMD Radeon HD 6970M card.
I notice that if I have the second monitor plugged into the thunderbolt port the imac will not start up. I have to disconnect the monitor and then the imac will boot up.
I mainly use windows (unfortunately) because I have software that won't run on a MAC so I really need this second monitor to work with Windows.
How can I get the second monitor Thunderbolt display to work on Windows 7.0 ?
    Thank you
