Shut Down Message Hangs Computer

I purchased a Late 2008 MacBook Pro (2.53GHz / 4GB RAM) in October, and everything has been running great. Recently, however, I've noticed something strange—when I go up to Apple > Shut Down or Apple > Restart, the "Are you sure you want to shut down your computer now?" question pops up, but the system hangs for 2 or 3 seconds as the 1 minute timer begins to count down. If I move the cursor during this time, it will jump around the screen, as if the computer is working on something extremely intensive. The same thing happens if I press "Cancel," and it takes a second or two to return the focus onto the application on top. This problem does not happen when I physically press the power button on the computer in order to get the Shut Down/Restart message. I know this is a minor issue, but I would like to get some feedback as it's only begun to happen recently and it seems like it could be a sign of different (bigger) issues.
Any ideas for tracking down the problem? System.log shows nothing. Activity Monitor shows a jump in activity when I choose Shut Down from the menu, but I'm not sure how to diagnose the problem other than looking at the graph on screen. Thanks to anyone with advice.

Thanks, I just tried the disk utility from the CD and it says the hard drive appears to be OK. Permissions were also repaired, but the problem persists. I also tried creating a new admin, but the same thing happens when I log in to that account. However, I noticed that the computer does not hang when I go to Apple > Log Out — the dialog box shows up without a hitch.
This seems like a strange problem. I've had Macs for years and years, so I think I have a good feel for how they're supposed to be running. This is definitely an issue I can live with for now, but if anyone still has any diagnostic advice I would certainly appreciate it.
If you boot in the verbose mode - hold down Cmd-v on boot - you will not only get a verbose boot, *but a verbose shutdown* and that might be useful.

  • While editing photos iPhoto shut down.  The unexpected shut down message appeared and I pressed re-open.  When it reopened I had lost my most recent import as well as imports from the past 2 weeks.  When I try to re-import it says that they already exist

After an import of about 20 black & white photos to iPhoto I was editing one when iPhoto shut down.  The "unexpected shut down" message was displayed.  I clicked reopen, which it did.  However, my last import was completely missing.  Not only that, everything I had imported, adjusted and filed for the past 2 weeks was also missing.  It has still saved all of the albums I created but all show "no photos".
When I try to re-import from my back-up, iPhoto says "can't import, photo is already in the library".
    Can anyone help?

    What version of iPhoto?
    Assuming 09 or later:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Mac mini keeps displaying shut down message every 10 minutes help?

My mac mini 320 gb machine with the cd drive in it from the 2010 model keeps displaying the shut down message every time minutes and I don't have enough time to check everything and i need some help. Thanks

Here is a link to a system preference you can check.http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4014?viewlocale=en_US
    It is a security feature.
You did not mention it but are you using a movie player other than the provide DVD player or iTunes.  For example VLC.  If you are, for some reason OS X does not know what is going on, i.e. watching a movie, so it thinks you left.  So, after 10mins it trys to log off.  The annoying part is that it will not do a force log off if there are programs running.  Well atleast it is annoying to me.
    Good Luck,

  • How to I keep Firefox installed, after shutting down or restarting computer?

After a successful install, I use Firefox, all is great. Problem is, when I shut down, or restart computer, all shortcuts, start menu Firefox, etc. no longer work, and icons are all windows icons, and all the shortcuts, etc. say files had been moved. I uninstall, restart coomputer, install again, successfully, and, same thing again. I am having to uninstall/install everytime I am restarting computer. Is there something I am suppose to check or uncheck after installing? Like compatibility mode, or something? My os is vista home premium 64bit. This happened the first time and everytime.

There are two separate desktops on this computer, one for me and one for another user. Her Firefox is not affected. I have looked everywhere for this second copy supposedly running but I don't see how it can be because I have shut down all programs several times.

There are a few possible causes for that error, for details see [[Firefox is already running but is not responding]].

  • Intel Based IMac OS X 10.5.8 freeze on shut down and hang ups

    Have an Intel IMac8,1 OS X 10.5.8
Computer has been freezing up on shut down, will log out and hold right at the shut down screen with a loading icon running.  Will have to force shut down with power button.  Applications have been loading slower than usual and computer hangs up frequently.  IMac has been offline(no internet connection) for about 6-7 months, reconnected recently.
Have updated all recommended updates, would my outdated operating system be the problem?  Not sure if during the time of being offline, important updates/firmware I might need?  Should I update my OS X or is their a fix/update that will work?
Read a post about verifying permissions...?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

would my outdated operating system be the problem?
    Nope, something else.
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
Then see how many of these you can answer...
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab, are there a lot of Pageouts?

  • My Macbook Pro won't shut down or restart without forcing shut down. Hangs on grey screen. iTunes not recognizing iPod.

    HELP!!!
Here are the specs of my machine:
    2011 13.3" MacBook Pro
    4 GB Ram/320 GB HD
For the past several months my MacBook Pro refuses to shut down or restart without holding down the power button. Whenever I choose to restart or shut down the computer, it will hang on a grey screen. I have even tried letting it hang for an hour, and it still won't shut down. I notice that once in a while it will retart or shut down correctly if I had not used opened iTunes since turning it on. However, even manually closing iTunes before shutting down or restarting does not solve the problem. It seems as though it only shuts down if iTunes was not used since restarting the computer. Is this a registry error? Do I need to reinstall iTunes? I noticed this problem began happening after I uninstalled Kaspersky Virus Scanner, could that be the problem as well? Also, I cannot guarantee that the problem is only associated with iTunes. I just noticed that one of the few times it shut down or restarted correctly, iTunes coincidentally had not been used. Also, this problem started happening while I was still using Lion and has continued despite upgrading to Mountain Lion.
Also, whenever I update my iPod through iTunes, it won't eject properly, and a transparent icon of the iPod displays on the screen even after I have removed it from the USB port. Furthermore, the iPod will only be recognized by iTunes and will only be updated the first time I plug it in. After removing it and plugging it back in, it won't recognize or update the device unless I shut down and restart the computer. I have the latest addition of iTunes. I also have two iPods, one 80 GB Classic, and one 8 GB Nano, and I have the same problem with both.
I have AppleCare. Should I take my macbook to the genius bar?
Applications I normally use are Word, Safari, FireFox, iTunes, FinalDraft, Photo Booth, Notes, Mail, App Store, etc. No real heavy lifting.
Any feedback would be very much appreciated. :-)
    Thank you everyone!!

    I have this question too.

  • Help! G4 PowerBook "Detect Displays" triggers shut down message

I think I may have damaged my PowerBook by being too lax with a DVI/VGA adaptor when unplugging it from a VGA multimedia projector - I was in a hurry and removed it from the Mac whilst it was halfway through shutting down. (I've gotten away with this before but have since heard it's not a good thing to do, probably even worse if halfway through shut down).
If I choose Detect Displays now, it triggers the "Are you sure you want to shut the computer down?" message.
I also am unable to boot up successfully unless I hold the Option key during the initial black "chime" screen - the PowerBook appears to die with a squeak - both the HDD and SuperDrive lose power. Option-V won't give me a verbose boot unless I flash the PRAM, and then works only once.
(I've reinstalled Tiger 10.8.4, have run Disk Utility and have flashed the PRAM.)
Has anyone else experienced a similar problem?

First off, I think you got your numbers confused. There is no 10.8.4. There is 10.4.8. But that's immaterial here. You should try to run the hardware test than came with your Powerbook:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86287
It may be you shorted the signal to the videochip, or the power supply.
Resetting the power manager may also work
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
Be sure when booting off the disk, to disconnect all thrid party peripherals.
