Shut Down or Sleep when going to bed

This has been discussed in 2007 concerning a MacBook, but this is 4 years and 2 OSs later. I have a new iMac on Lion.
Shut Down when the machine will not be used for several hours has the advantage of saving some energy (and possibly extending screen life), and my experience of my old (2004) G5 (OS 10.3 to 10.5) was that after about 3 days the Mac started to behave obnormally. Nothing dangerous, just not finding a file or similar oddity. A Shutdown and Restart cured that.
Sleep is more convenient, and avoids the delay of a Restart (for those with a frenetic lifestyle). Also, using Carbon Copy Cloner, you can schedule a bootable backup clone every day (provided you set  System Preferences - Energy Saver - Schedule to wake the computer a minute or so after (yes, after) the time of the backup.)
Some people leave their Macs on for weeks.
Is it a matter of user preference, or is there a technical advantage either way?

I'd say personal preference.  I always put my MacBook to sleep, and I leave my iMac on 24/7 (display turns off).  Never had a problem with either machines.

  • MBP shuts down after sleep when 2% battery left

Sorry guys if u find it irritating to see the similar question again n again but i couldnt stop myself from asking this...
i have my mbp just 3 weeks old and i tried to callibrate the battery just few hrs ago...i continuously used my mbp until the battery level reached to 2% (the warning message showed when it was 6%)...just then i had to received a phone call. When i was busy talking, i noticed that the mbp has gone to sleep mode...but when i returned (2-3 mins later), i found it shut down...
well, i think it should have remained to sleep mode but it didnt...then after an hour i connected the power cord and switched on and noticed a progress bar which i saw for the first time....i have been charging it for 40-50 mins, now...
also the health of my battery keeps fluctuating between 95-100 %...istat shows this...is this normal???
So what i want to know is, Is this normal for mbp to shut down when the battery reach that low?? OR there is some problem in my MBP???
if there is should i be going to my mbp reseller shop for service or it is something i can handle myself????
    thanks in advance..

then how am i supposed to callibrate if it shuts down before completely draining the battery???
and what about the battery health % being fluctuating? my battery have completed only 9 cycles and the health shown at the moment is 97%

  • Mac 10.6.8: click shut down from menu, it goes to sleep.

Hi there, I've just noticed this recently, that when I shut down my mac, I figure it has shut down, the sleep light doesn't flash so it looks good.
But when I come to turn it on in the morning, I press the power button, I realized that it's been in sleep mode all night.
I used the terminal and command force quit and it worked for that time but I'm still having problems.
    How do I fix this?

What did he tech say about a possible cause?  Run the hardware test which is on disc 1 of the System DVD that originally came w/your comp.  Post the results.

  • Mid-2011 i7. iMac and USB shuts down on sleep

Just got a refurb i7 21" and am loving it. But I was having trouble with it shutting down when going to sleep and therefore not waking from sleep without a full boot up.
After finding this closed thread (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2258706?start=0&tstart=0), I wanted to confirm that unfortunately even after the Lion 10.7.2 update, some powered USB hubs (for example Newer Tech 7 port powered about 1 year old) still cause the iMac to shut down on sleep.
A new Belkin 7 port powered ("high speed for 2.0 or 1.1 devices") does the trick and now the iMac will wake from sleep properly and not shut down.
Just wanted to pass this on to others who might be having trouble and wondering if their motherboard is fried or something.
Also, if a USB port stops working, do an SMC reset (unplug, hold power button down).

Which way are you trying to update - iTunes or WiFi in the iPad settings? Try switching from one method to the other method. If you don't have a computer and need to use WiFi, try closing all apps and then reboot your iPad and try again.
Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the recents tray will appear with all of your recent apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of all of the apps in the recents tray. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar when you are done.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
It wouldn't hurt to reboot your router either by unplugging it from power for about 30 seconds, plug it back in, let it fully start up and then try to update again.

  • Should I shut down my computer when not in use

should I shut down my computer when not in use, overnight for instance?

Hello! Leaving it on 24/7/365 is perfectly acceptable. You may save some electricity but personally I think you'll pay for it with a more troublesome system. I do however set the monitors to go to sleep. I like the no startup lag time of running 24/7/365. That said, if I lived in an area prone to electrical outages or if my location was prone to lightening strikes I'd probably shut it down and unplugged. Of course with it being unplugged the pram battery may run down. These old G4's have been running 24/7/365 for years now. I do try to restart every few weeks just for good measure! In the end it's your preference. The hardware works best when a constant temperature is maintained. Tom

  • Powerbook 17" G4 automatically shuts down in sleep mode

Powerbook 17" G4 automatically shuts down in sleep mode intermittently. When press power button to bring it back up, it takes a very long time to reboot and the date is set to Dec 31, 1969. It comes back up finally, but this is irritating.
    Thanks for any help,

    Hi Reaskt
Have you tried using Temperture Monitor to monitor your temps? Maybe it is overheating. Also it sounds like your backup battery is dead, that's why the clock reset's it's self. If you still have applecare I would give apple a call a soon I could. To me it looks like you would need a new logic board. I realy hope that you have applecare. Also have you tried an Erase and Install? Have you tried running Disk Utility booted from your install CD?
Post back when you get more info

  • Shutting down during sleep

My new iMac 21.5 is shutting down every time it goes to sleep. This is my second iMac as I replaced the first one that was doing the same thing!
Any ideas? I have an airport extreme, two WD hard drives and a USB HUB atached. All are plugged into a brand new APC surger protector/battery backup 450/4550.

I suspect your problem is one of the peripherals. You need to eliminate the peripherals one by one to see which is causing the problem.

  • Can i create mcx for shut down properly mac when battery is less 5 %

    Hi hello
Can i create mcx for shut down properly mac when battery is less 5 % ?
    Thanks for your reply

You can create a mailing list by using the "Groups" feature of Address Book. Simply select "New Group" from the File menu. Name the group, and drag the contacts you need into the group.
In Mail, open up Preferences (under the Mail menu), and click on "Composing". Then make sure that "When sending to a group, show all member addresses" is unchecked.
The auto reply is a feature that is better done on your mail server, as you Mac can only send an auto reply when it is on, with the Mail application open. If you use dot Mac, you can set up a vacation responder through the web, and you can leave your computer switched off.
If you really want to leave your Mac on when you are on holiday, you can set up a mail rule (Preferences, Rules).

  • Mac shuts down in sleep mode.

This just started to happen to my mac pro quad intel running the latest SNOW software. My mac shuts down in sleep mode. I tried to zap pram, but it ill not allow me to do this.
I also check the internal battery using a small program and its a full charge. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?
    Thanks,

    godlovestodance,
your Mid 2012 needs 1600 MHz memory modules. Is your currently installed RAM of this variety?
In your current setup, is it your 1 TB HDD or your 256 GB SSD that is in the optical drive bay?
One thing you can try is this: boot your MacBook Pro into Recovery mode by holding down a Command key and the R key as it starts up. Once the Mac OS X Utilities menu appears, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Does it still crash because of an extended sleep?

Did you reinstall CS3 after CC?
For that matter, doing an in-place upgrade on the OS is always a gamble with Adobe programs. Reinstalling all the versions you need, in order, would probably solve your problem.
And you shouldn't need to save as IDML after opening the .inx in CC.

  • My I phone 3gs shuts down suddenlly but when i removed the sim it is working without shutting down suddenlly again when you insert the sim it started shutting down suddenlly

My I phone 3gs shuts down suddelly but when I removed sim card it started working without sudden shut downs, again when I insert sim card it started shutting down suddenlly.

I have Satellite A300 and until now everything works OK.
I would like to know what happen when you remove the battery and use notebook with power supply only. Does notebook shuts down again.
If not let OS run and put the battery.
Is the battery recognized properly? Does notebook switch off again?
To be honest I cannot imagine this issue has something with software or background processes. Recovery image you got with your notebook is designed for this certain notebook mode. Recovery image is tested and I dont think preinstalled OS has anything to do with this.
    Full diagnosis?
And how to do this? You know very well that diagnosis can be done with diagnostic tools only and such tools have services only. I hope you will find answers but Im 99% sure there is nothing you can do about that. Maybe you should contact service, explain the situation and ask for help.

How to avoid shut down BPELPM Server when creating a JAZN user and after doing changes to user-properties.xml?

this configuration is only supported on a midtier - there is a work around for a standalone install, nevertheless I would not recommend this for production ..
if this is NOT a production enviroment - I can try to get you the information .
