Shut down with multiple users logged in
Is there a way to shut down the Mac with other users logged in, or do you have to log out each person individually? Any shortcuts to log out everyone and shut down?
Hi Peter
Just shut it down, then you should get a message saying that you need to enter administrator name and password because others are still logged in.Enter name and password press ok. It should shut down then

We are a school district using an Active Directory environment. We currently use other Adobe products with multiple users on different machines and it works fine. If Lightroom does work in a domain environment what are the required local user permissions needed for it tor work properly? Thanks!
Lightroom is not a multiuser program. It is required that the catalog is located on a hard drive that is local to the machine accessing it. There are no workarounds.

UPS auto shutdown with multiple users logged in
How does this work? If I have more than one user logged in, the power goes out and the computer decides (based on the settings I have selected for UPS) to shut down, will it be able to complete the shutdown? When I do it manually I have to log out the other users.
Thanks. It depends on what the users are/were doing.
If there are unsaved changes, OSX will put up the usual warning about unsaved changes, and shut down everything else.
If there aren't any such things preventing it, yes, it will do a complete shutdown.

I am trying to get Firefox running on a large network where I have multiple users that log on with the same user name and password. The problem is that when another user logs on to another computer the message comes up that their is already an instance of firefox running on that computer even though there really isn't. Only one instance can be run on the network at one time. I believe it is because firefox stores a shared profile as it thinks it is actually the same user even though it is being run on another computer. I repeat that each user that logs on uses the same user name and password but on different computers.

No sleep with multiple users logged in
Hi there,
In order to access multiple iTunes-Libraries from my apple TV (Main, Archive, Childrens) I have set up three useraccounts on my macMini each with its own iTunes Library. When booting up I log in to all three accounts and start iTunes.
It all works well except sleep!
When only one user (Main) is logged in sleep works normally. When the other users are logged in at the same time the mini stays awake even if there is no activity.
Any suggestions how to fix this or how to share multiple Libraraies from one useraccount?
Thank You for Your suggestions.
CenarIs it any one user or just Main that works correctly. If it is just Main, is there anything in the other users' login items that may be causing it to not sleep?
You can try looking in the Console for messages about sleep. Type sleep into the search field and see if anything is preventing sleep. -
Time Machine with multiple users on single computer
Hi All,
I have an iMac at home with multiple user log ons. I'm about to get the Time Capsule and start using Time Machine (currently I use backup).
When I switch on Time Machine, does it switch on for all users, or will each user need to turn on Time Machine?
If I have to switch on Time Machine for each user, will each user's time machine back up the entire computer (so I'll have two complete copies on my computer on the external drive)?
If this does occur, can I control what Time Machine backs up so TM only backs up user specific information?
Thanks in advance,
ChrisWhen you first backup it will backup your whole system (user directories, system directories, applications, etc) unless you specify folders to exclude. When a user account is added to the computer, their home folder will be added to the backup in a similar way to if you added a new application. It will back up the directory structure exactly as it is on your main hard drive. The backup will essentially keep a copy of the whole hard drive on the backup drive.
The Time Machine will either be on for the whole system, or off for the whole system. It is not on or off for a specific user account. Users (depending on if they've got admin privileges) may have control over turning time machine on or off, but this does not change who can access the backups. All users will be able to invoke Time Machine to get to their backed up files.
Time Machine does not make separate backups for individual users. Instead, it preserves the permissions for backed up files, so while every user can access the backups, they cant just browse other users' files on the backup. The same restrictions on the main drive are carried over to the backup. Still, a standard user who's lost a file will be able to go into Time Machine, access a backed up version of the file, and restore it. Unlike standard users who are restricted from seeing other users' files in the backups, Admins are also restricted but they can be authenticated to view other users' files if they want to. -

I movie shuts down with one minute left to process movie. How do I fix?
iMovie shuts down with less than a minute to process. How can I fix? I've tried 4 times now. Memory issue?
Hi Thersa
May be some help here.
*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows:*
• Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
• Hard disk is untidy: Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
• Delete iDVD pref file - *or rather start a new user/account* - log into this and re-try
• Program miss-match: iDVD 5.0.2, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK - DON’T work under Leopard
• Program miss-match: iDVD 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
• Program miss-match: iDVD’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
• iDVD (08) v7 Locate theme folder. Move out iDVD1, iDVD 2 and eventually iDVD4 folders to desktop - re-try
• Try a Cleaning CD/DVD that cleans the laser lens on the DVD burner/player
iDVD 6.0.4 and iDVD 7.0.1 are compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
iDVD pref file resides: Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences and is named:
com.apple.iDVD.plist
While iDVD is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
Now restart iDVD.
Last resort: from Craig: Solved the problem!! Finally!!
I deleted every iDVD application and folder from my boot drive,
emptied the trash and then installed iDVD 08 using the customize option
and I am up and running.

Multiple users logged into one server, each users printer has a different name, application needs ONE name to print to.
I'm NOT in any way a Terminal Services expert and I need help trying to get an application program working in a multi-user environment.
The issue is that the printer changes for every user that is logged in. The application needs to print NOT to the default printer, but to a "special" printer which is selected in the application... let's call it a label printer to simplify the explanation.
You have your default regular printer, easy for the application to find that one, and then you have a special printer that labels get printed onto. The application needs to know what printer is the label printer. So we allow the user to select that in the
application and the selection is stored in a config file in
C:\ProgramData\mfgr\prog\setting files
I don't have access to the application so I can't change how this works.
In the "regular" world, selecting the label printer driver to use should be per machine, NOT per user. When a new user logs into a machine, the physical printer doesn't go "poof" and a new printer suddenly appear. Same printer for all
users.
Yet in terminal services, the physical machine is "merged" with the virtual machine on the server. And there can be many users logged in at the same time. So each users real machine (and real printer) is injected into the "fake" terminal
services machine. The name of the printers is made unique for each user. So the printers DO go "poof" and change names depending on the user logged into terminal services.
So user "A" logs in and sets up the application to print to "LabelPrinterForUserA" (or whatever the name of the printer happens to be), that setting is stored in the ProgramData subfolder, and all is well. Later, user "B" logs
in, and when they print, the application tries to print to "LabelPrinterForUserA" which doesn't exist for user B or is only accessible by user A. If user B re-configures, that breaks it for user A.
SOLUTION 1: The way that /should/ work (in my mind) is that you define one "generic" printer in Terminal Services... call it "Virtual Label printer" and when the user wants to print to it, the print job gets re-directed back to whatever
physical printer is actually connected to their local workstation. There is a map of virtual printer to actual printer depending on the current user. The application is told once to print to "Virtual Label Printer" for all users.
SOLUTION 2: Or... there should be some way to make the ProgramData sub folders separate per user. E.g. when user "A" tries to access:
C:\ProgramData\mfgr\prog\setting files
they actually get
C:\UserData\UserA\AppData\mfgr\prog\setting files
and user "B" gets
C:\UserData\UserB\AppData\mfgr\prog\setting files
So the question I have is: Does either of those solutions exist hidden somewhere in the setup of terminal server? Or is there another way around this issue that I don't know?I don't really have a "for sure" answer to this, but because people here can't seem to deal with a question that hasn't been answered I'll provide the best answer I did receive from ServerFault.com user Nathan:
I can feel your pain with using old software on terminal servers ...the solution I've come up with definitely won't scale as it requires some manual configuration, but I've gotten this method to work with our label printers (which require to be
printed to an LPT port...yep, that old).
Share your USB-connected printers to the network on each machine. Then, have the user log in on aunique session for each of them
(a TS account cannot be shared among computers for this to work) and install a network printer pointing to the USB one they shared. Try to use a DNS name to account for possible DHCP movements.
After, it should work. Each user can do this since display names can be identical as long as the ports are different (which they are).
This was clarified by the following series of comments:
I think you are on to something here, and I originally advised the admin to do this. The problem he ran into is that it setup the printer names in the TS as "printer on usersworkstation"
and he could not rename it except to change the "printer" to whatever. E.g. the "on userworkstation" remained. I believe there is another way of installing the printer which avoids this, but I can't find it. Ages ago, one used to do NET

@JamesNewton That's actually the exact method we used. The way around the "network printer" part is to install it as local printer and map it to a TCP/IP port that way. – Nathan

You mean in the case where the printers are TCP/IP connected and not local USB / LPT to the users workstation? That makes sense. Wonder if this will work for USB connected printers... – James

@JamesNewton You'd share the local printer on the client's PC then on the server connect via TCP/IP to it. You'd need static addresses or use DNS names if DHCP, though. – Nathan

Ah. Yes. I see. Looks like the LPT thing should work even with a USB connected printer:superuser.com/questions/182655/… – James

Sharing iTunes on a single computer with multiple users
Greetings,
I have been troubleshooting a problem sharing iTunes on a single computer with multiple users that cropped up a few weeks ago and have not had very good luck.
Several months ago I successfully set up my wife’s G4 Laptop (PowerPC processor) so that we could share iTunes on that computer. I had just gotten her an “My Book” external hard drive (Western Digital). The iTunes Library will go on this new unit because the internal drive was running out of room. I successfully set the privileges, moved the entire library onto a “Share” directory and everything worked fine.
In this way, when I got a new CD I could add it to iTunes (under my login, administrator privileges) and she could access it (under her login) to listen to while working on the computer or using her iPod. This arrangement went well for quite awhile.
About a month and a half ago, when I tried to launch iTunes from my login I received this message:
“The iTunes Library file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file.”
I think the permissions must have changed when there was an update because my wife is pretty careful about what she does on her computer. Updates were the only thing I could think of that had changed since I had set her computer up. I also noticed that some of the iTunes defaults were different from the last time I had used it to add a CD.
So, I did some reading and went back through the motions of trying to set it up again. I re-formatted the My Book hard drive to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) added the files back to the external, reset permissions on the external hard drive. (Owners: System, Access: read and write - Group: wheel, Access: read and write – Others: read and write).
When I now launch iTunes under my login I get this message:
“The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items.”
What gives? I am the original owner and have always had top-level privileges.
Can someone point me to any articles or clues as to how I need to set-up iTunes on a single computer to be shared by more than one user? Also, I am considering upgrading to the newer system in a few weeks, so if a solution for OS X 10.5 is available, that would work too.
TimWas your wife logged into the libray at the time you tried to log in? I have had a similar problem and it was because another user was logged into the library when I attempted to. I got the permission denied banner.

1 Apple TV 2nd Gen, Windows 7 Computer with multiple user accounts
The issue that I am having is I have 1 Apple TV 2nd Gen and Windows 7 Computer with multiple user accounts.
When I log onto my Windows user account, open up Itunes and turn on home sharing my Apple TV work perfect but if another family member switches to their Windows user account without logging me out, the home share shows up on Apple TV but it just says "Loading ... Library" and never loads.
If we switch back to my user account, restart iTunes, everything is fine. Is there a way to keep my home share active in ATV2 across multiple user accounts? All of my video is under my account. You can home-share multiple libraries but only use one account at a time.

File sharing with multiple users on one Mac
I have two Macs, both of which ca seen each other across the network. My question regards file sharing with multiple users on the same computer. When file sharing, are the files from all users available across the network, or just those of the user presently logged in? The issue is that I am trying to access files from a user who isn't currently logged in, but another user on that computer is. I need to get into that person's documents, but I don't see a way to navigate to their documents folder.
Right, I got that. But the computer is in constant use by User A, while I need access to User B's files. I could need access at anytime, and it would be a pain to make User A log off and log in as User B everytime. I was just wondering if there is anyway to access User B's files in this situation, without logging User B in.

Working on a single computer with multiple users, I have set things up to allow each user to view and listen to the others' music libraries under the "Shared Library" function. Can you then connect an iPod touch and copy music from a shared library?
Was your wife logged into the libray at the time you tried to log in? I have had a similar problem and it was because another user was logged into the library when I attempted to. I got the permission denied banner.

Is Screen Sharing with multiple users possible?
I am trying to discuss some documents with multiple users. It works very well with just two users sharing the screen of one of them, so I was wondering if there was a way to have a third user participating. If iChat does not allow this, does anyone know a different software solution?
Thanks
ChristianHi,
No. (Not in iChat)
And I have not heard of anything either.

GT70 takes longer to shut down with Windows 8.1
Hello all,
Hope at this time I am not the only one experiencing my laptop taking longer to shutdown before 8.1. I am wondering what I can do to lessen my shut down time for my laptop. I have a GT70-0ne. The shut down process before I upgraded took less then three minutes but now that I upgraded to 8.1 takes around five to six or even longer. I have read several ways to get rid of the longer shut down period is two make two accounts and delete one, change the performance options, and last revert back to regular windows 8. Hope to hear some advice on the best option to resolve the issue.Lots of things can prevent Windows from shutting down. Even when I forgot to close my document file, Windows just won't shut down and won't log me off, instead it just dim the background and pop up some options.
Having Malwarebytes and Kaspersky running is not ideal, because they will likely to conflict with each other. Turn off 1 of them.
It can also means your hard disk fragmentation is high. Try to defrag your harddisk once in a while.
It could be one annoying features that Windows try to compensate its sluggish OS called hybrid shutdown (this is to hibernate your computer instead really shut down, so your computer can boot up faster in the next time you turn it on). You can google it.
