Shut off monitor with fn key (I think)

Pavilion dv6. Playing a game, intending to hit f4*, I instead activated a special command I've never used with a laptop: a symbol that looks a little like a monitor - a rectangle flanked by two vertical lines. Screen went black.
I've tried esc and tried hitting the same command key. Without optimism, I tried cntrl-alt-del. I searched for a simple keyboard map, but I can't find one.
Any help getting my display back is appreciated. TIA.
* VERY annoying that the default is not the fn but the special command.
This question was solved.

Hi,
I would say from your description that you've set the video output to another ( non present ) screen option.
What OS are you running?  If it's Windows 8, you will probably need to press f4, then the up arrow 3 times and hit enter.
For future reference, you can set the behaviour of the f keys to require the fn key being held down before the default action occurs as follows.
Shut down the notebook.  Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to enter the Start-up Menu.  Select the Bios option ( usually f10 ), then make the change shown in the document on the following link.

  • Cannot shut off computer with powerr on/off switch

    Dear friendly  Computer Geeks,
My computer is an HP desktop , product s5-1110, microprocessor Intel Pentium CPU g620 @ 2.60 GHz , Bios 7.16 , usb input device, hard drive st31000524as, windows OS 7.
The computer crashed , I could not determine the reason. I was able to save my personal files by starting the computer in Safe mode. Then I loaded the virgin OS 7 as provided by HP in the hard drive partition.
It would not start in the regular way.  I then initialized it , pressed  the escape key to enter in safe mode, select restore default values then proceed to start windows in regular mode. A problem keeps coming on. After 20 minutes of operation I cannot stop the computer with shut off command or with the Power on/off switch. I must remove the power cord and when I want to restart it I must do as described before.
I would appreciate your help in resolving this troublesome problem.

  • Can't turn on/off wireless with Fn key in Ubuntu [NB250-10Q]

    Hi,
I'm using a *NB250-10Q* with kUbuntu 10.10. It works great, but i'm having problems with Fn-F8 key to turn on/off wireless.
Some Fn keys are working well, like bridhtnes, sound... but Fn-F8 to turn on/off wireless is ignored.
I've read a lot about this problem, but none of the proposed solutions have worked to me.
Is anyone able to turn on/off wireless through Fn keys in linux?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi
Problem in the whole story is that your notebook was not designed for Linux and, as far as I know, Ubuntu is not supported OS so Toshiba doesnt offer any driver or Toshiba tools and utilities.
Generally speaking you are on your own. If Ubuntu works well, you are lucky but if there is some missing functionality, Im afraid you must live with it.
For Win7 Toshiba has designed Value added package that contains button support utility, flash cards and all FN options will be controlled by several different tools packed in this package.
Such VAP doesnt exist for Linux.
Try to ask some Linux specialists on Linux forums if there is some solution for this.

  • 2009 Macbook shutting off randomly with over 50% of battery left

Recently my 2009 Macbook has started shutting off, with no warning and 50% or more of the battery remaining. The battery life has also dropped considerably. Is this a common problem? And why is it happening?

How many charge cycles does your battery have? If you are upwards of 300, then you could be getting close to the life of the battery, and it will demonstrate this behavior even though the reading shows better health. Check your System Profiler:

There is also an open source utility called Coconut Battery that you could download here:

When the battery begins to die it  discharges sooner than it is able to activate the script "10%  remaining" notice.

  • Iphone 6 keeps shutting off randomly with battery left

my iPhone 6 is up to date its on IOS 8.1,3 and it keeps randomly shutting off with plenty of battery left like 30 or 40% and it will just turn off. I restarted it and backed it up and it continues to happen i don't know what to do.

Try to set it back to factory settings, without using the latest backup, in case the backup contained corrupt data.

my iAD WONT START AFTER i HAD SHUT IT OFF USING THE SLEEP WAKE BUTTON. iS THERE SOMETHING i NEED TO RESET, AND HOW?

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased.

  • My Iphone 4s shuts off once it drops below 20% battery as if its completely dead. Before the update it would stay on until at least 5% or less.

I have updated my phone to the most recent but now my phone will randomly shut off after it drops below about 20% battery life... tonight I was at 21% and it shut off as if it was completely dead. Yesterday it died completely at 13%. It doesn't turn back on until it is plugged in and sometimes it will pop back on immediately after being plugged in. Is there a way to fix this or does another small update to fix this have to come out?

I have the same issue. I think it may be related to cold weather. I am now inside writing this without plugging it in immediately after it repeatedly shut off outside with ~18% battery. This is really bad. It almost left me stranded as I was expecting to call for a ride.

  • Press B3 on a keyboard, and the tone never shuts off

This is happening in the ES E synth, the ES M, the ES1, the ES2, and EXS24. And only in Logic, not in Reason or Live.
I select one of these synths, and as soon as I press the B3 key on my MIDI controller keyboard, the key tone will never shut off. All other keys continue to work fine, but that B3 will never shut up again once it is pressed. This happens (currently) 100% of the time for me.
    Makes the software pretty useless..

    Hello korncompaq,
    Your computer will not boot.
It sounds like you may have a problem with your board.
I’d suggest take the computer somewhere local and have them check everything out.
Let me know how everything goes.

  • HELP!!  INSTANT SHUT OFF, what to do??

The other day my mac book pro, original 15'model, shut off instantly with no warning or no reason. It was plugged into a public outlet, so the only think i cna think of is that it was either a power surge or a faulty power supply. Anyone else know of a explanation or solution. It just went black in a second, like being blinked off.

    Hi DeZine;
My MBP was doing the same thing suddenly down suddenly for no good reason. I took it into the Apple Store and they replaced the motorboard. They said there is power management logic on the motherboard which was not functioning correctly in my MBP. It hasn't done that since they replace it.

  • K7n2 shuts off during graphic intensive programs

My problem is that sometimes, mainly when I'm running a graphically intensive prgram (mainly games) my computer shuts completley off. This has only hapened when I'm playing a game, like final fantasy XI or unreal 2004.
I thought it was the ge force, so i turned it from 8x to 4x. i have also had the case opened and a room fan pointed directly in blasting air to keep the temperature down, ause i thought it might be shutting off due to temperature. But today it shut off even with the room fan.

Wow I'm surprised you'd get as far as you did...glad you got it sorted.
FYI That's mentioned in the troubleshooting guide at the top of the forum.

  • Rendering shuts off my computer everytime

Hi, everytime I render in CS6 my computer shuts off randomly. This never happened in CS5.
I tried turning off multi-frame rendering but it still happens.
Any help would be appriciated. Let me know if more info is needed.
    My computer specs:
    inter i7 930 @ 2.8ghz
    20gb ram
    64-bit windows 7

let me go down the list:
    -AE 11.0.1.12
    - all updates installed
    -windows 7 64bit
    -all footage is illustrator files/text
-no error messages (maybe theres a way to get the render log to see what went wrong?)
-tested it with no other software running
    -no 3rd party plugins

    -happens only with final output
-renders more(stays on longer) without multiframe render, shuts off quicker with multiframe render on

  • IPod Touch 8Gb 1st Gen Crashes and shuts off when using apps

When using Safari to browse the web, or using any application other than the music player, my iPod touch crashes and shuts off, often with a loud POP if I have my earbuds in my ears. When attempting to turn it back on, I get the standard Apple bootup logo, but then it crashes again a few seconds later. Sometimes, my ipod displays the battery meter after turning it back on, which indicates that the battery is nearly drained, even if the battery was completely full only minutes later. When using the music player or listening to an audiobook, it seems that my iPod can go all night long without incident, as I have fallen asleep with an audiobook playing, and have woken up the next morning to find it still playing.
I have performed a hard reset by holding both the power and the home button for 20 seconds or so, and have deleted and reloaded everything on my iPod twice, but I am still having problems. Any advice?

Mine does the exact same thing, it will not even turn on without being plugged into the computer (not even a charger). I usually have to restore it by manually sending it into restore mode.

  • I'm having issues booting up my MacBook Pro. When I turn it on, I get the sound and the apple logo with the spinning wheel, then a loading bar appears, then after about 30 seconds it shuts off. Suggestions?

I believe it's OSX 10.7.5 or .4, can't check now. I'm not able to boot up past the login screen. A bar comes up below the apple logo as if it's installing an apple update, but doesn't make any progress. Eventually, the bar goes away and just the apple logo and spinning wheel are there, then it just shuts off soon after. I've tried holding shift key on power up to enter safe mode, but nothing happens.  Any help/ suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You can't backup without booting the computer unless you remove the drive. But it may be you have a more serious hardware problem, so I think you may be better off taking it in for service.
But here's what you might try since you now have an external drive.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your drive's main entry (topmost one) and click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. This will fix the boot block if it's damaged. Next, select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button.
If you have no problems with the above, then quit DU and return to the Main Menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu. See if the computer will boot properly.
If you get this far you should backup the drive ASAP. You will need to prepare your external drive:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.

  • Macbook Pro won't boot past grey screen with Apple logo and then shuts off

    This is a long story...
This morning, I would turn it on and it'd go to the grey screen with the Apple logo for a few seconds and then go to the icon that is a circle with a line through it. After reading online, I was able to boot it up in Safe Mode. I messed around a little bit in system preferences thinking I could fix it on my own, not really knowing what I was doing (I'm a *******). I went to Startup Disk in Preferences. I chose the MAC OS X, xxxx and then clicked the lock to prevent further changes and then clicked restart.
Now when I turn on the macbook, it goes to the grey screen with the Apple logo for at least two-three minutes and then just shuts off. Won't boot into Safe Mode now. Please help. I already tried the Command-Option-P-R keys trick like five times.

If you have a full retail DVD for 10.6 you can boot from that by holding the C key during startup...but you will then be in install mode if that is what you want to do.  At least go ahead and see if it will boot ok from the 10.6 disk and then you can decide what you want to do further.
Apple does not have 10.5 for sale anymore from what some other users have said on here so if you want to go that route you will have to find a copy for sale such as from eBay or one of the Mac resellers.
Before taking the machine to someone, try booting from 10.6 and see if that works...that way you can narrow down problems the machine may be having.

  • Shuts Off with No Warning

I've had my MacBook plugged in and turned on pretty much steadily for the past month or so (something I've done before with no problems).
In the past few days, it has just suddenly shut off -- instantly -- a number of time. Doesn't go to sleep -- just turns off. Sometimes it will shut off again before fully rebooting.
I have also noticed that the power indicator is not going above 96% even though the MacBook is always plugged in to a power source.
I'm also using it with an external monitor and mouse.
Does this seem to be a power/battery issue? I would think that even if there were some sort of power blip, it would go to battery. Is this one of those things where it helps to take the battery out and out it back in?
Could it have anything to do with whether the MacBook's cover is open? I've read in these forums that it doesn't need to be, and it seems to work with it closed, but I have a slight impression that leaving the cover open somehow helps?

Note the exact time the issue happens and check your System logs in your Console application for clues to the cause.
It sounds like it could be thermal-related or possibly the battery if it has a lot of load cycles on it.
