  • Mail blocks shutdown and automatically re-starts

    When I try to shot down the Mail program blocks the shutdown, and it automatically opens at start-up even though it is NOT a login item. (It started after I installed the Avast anti-virus program). Any idea what cause this and what to do about it? Thanks.

    I learned to shut down all my major programs before shutting down. It has saved me countless headaches. I don't have an answer for the program automatically starting up when it's not a login item, but perhaps it has something to do with the way you end up shutting down. If you just shut down by pushing the power button that would be why.

  • A UPS model that works with Mac Native software to do a graceful shutdown and automatic restart during a power failure.

    I've tried 3 UPS's (2 APC and one TripLite) that state they are OSX compatible, however, they do not fully respond to the native osx setting in (system Preferences/ Energy Saver/ UPS/Start up automatically after a power failure). This is what happens:
    During a power outage, the OS does a graceful shutdown, but does not reboot when power is restored.
    Apparently, the UPS is not notified to turn off during the shut down process. The power (on-Off-On) cycle is required by the mac to restart.
    Trip lite tech support says they have software that works with Windows and linux to do this, but not mac.
    I've tried two older APC UPS's, One Smart UPS1500 and a Back-UPS 1500 with the same result on two different servers and one iMac.
    At this point I'm looking for a make and model of a UPS that does work. If anyone can verify a make and model that actually does this, I'd greatly appreciate it.
    Its a simple test, just pull the plug on your UPS, wait for the system to shut down, and then plug the UPS back in. The system should reboot.

    Many of the CyberPower UPS units are compatible. Checkout the home solutions on this page: http://www.cyberpowersystems.com/products/ups-systems.html

    Go back to Boot Camp, delete the Windows partition (Boot Camp partition) and return the drive to as it was before you installed Windows. Then start again.

  • WebLogic Datasources : Automatically Shutdown and Start up

    Hi there,
    I have a problem with my datasources, I have WLST script which shutdown and start automatically some datasources in my environment, all of them in my crontab !
    Follow exactly my script !
    [weblogic@wls_server restartDS]$ cat shutdownDS1.py | more
    connect('weblogic','password','t3://server:10000')
    domainConfig()
    servers = cmo.getServers()
    domainRuntime()
    for server in servers:
    try:
    print 'check ' + server.getName()
    print '/ServerRuntimes/' + server.getName() + '/JDBCServiceRuntime/' + server.getName() + '/JDBCDataSourceRuntimeMBeans/MYDATASOURCE-XA1'
    cd('ServerRuntimes/' + server.getName() + '/JDBCServiceRuntime/' + server.getName() + '/JDBCDataSourceRuntimeMBeans/MYDATASOURCE-XA1')
    objectArray = jarray.array([], java.lang.Object)
    stringArray = jarray.array([], java.lang.String)
    invoke('shutdown', objectArray, stringArray)
    except WLSTException,e:
    print server.getName() + 'is not running.'
    for server in servers:
    try:
    print 'check ' + server.getName()
    print '/ServerRuntimes/' + server.getName() + '/JDBCServiceRuntime/' + server.getName() + '/JDBCDataSourceRuntimeMBeans/MYDATASOURCE-XA2'
    cd('ServerRuntimes/' + server.getName() + '/JDBCServiceRuntime/' + server.getName() + '/JDBCDataSourceRuntimeMBeans/MYDATASOURCE-XA2')
    objectArray = jarray.array([], java.lang.Object)
    stringArray = jarray.array([], java.lang.String)
    invoke('shutdown', objectArray, stringArray)
    except WLSTException,e:
    print server.getName() + 'is not running.'
    exit()
    Don´t worry, I have another script which kill XA3 and XA4 datasources as well, so, this way, I have load balancing here !
    It works with CRONTAB !
    The problem here is : Doesn´t matter if datasources are running or not, simply , datasources automatically shutdown and after that, start it! But I would like to improve this, I would like to implement datasource status condition, I mean, when datasource it become overloaded, it kill automatically , this way, I would not use crontab, but another kind of trigger |!
    Did you see this before ?
    I would like to improve this workaround !
    Just keep in mind, me and my team, didn´t discover the root cause yet, so, this automatically datasource restart is a kind of workaround!
    Thanks in advance !
    Edson

    Hmm. what was the problem app?
    Force a shut down by holding the power button for an extended amount.
    Reboot into SafeBoot mode to clear cache files, then reboot as normal.

  • Init 0 or shutdown -i0 on solaris 8 automatically reboots

    I have a solaris 8 server and when I issue init 0 or shutdown -i0 it automatically reboots. I was able to issue init 5 and it shutdown/power down, but not init 0.
    I looked at inittab and it shows
    s0:0:wait:/sbin/rc0 >/dev/msglog 2<>/dev/msglog </dev/console
    Any suggestions?
    thanks

    Hi
    Thank you. I have 2 SunFire v440s. Both have auto-boot?true and I only have this problem with one of them. I was able to issue init 5 and the server shut down, but both init 0 or shutdown -i0 rebooted.
    Unfortunately the server with the problem is remote so I can't do allot of testing with it.
    Thank you for your suggestions.

  • Send email on reboot, shutdown and boot

    Hi, I'm trying to setup my 10.4.11 machine (I have one that runs leopard and one that runs tiger) so that it sends a email on reboot, shutdown and boot. I have attempted to do so by placing a script that sends a email via the terminal mail command in /etc/rc.local for boot, /etc/rc.shutdown.local for shutdown and /etc/rc.reboot.local for reboot. The only problem is that when I reboot the shutdown script is executed instead of the reboot script and rc.local is never executed. My guess is that I need to use a launchd task for the boot email instead of rc.local but I'm not sure what Apple is using instead of rc.reboot.local ...any ideas? Thanks!

    I have solved this problem by assuming that reboot and shutdown both rely on rc.shutdown.local as appears to be the case and thusly changing the title of the email to say that the server is shutting down -or- rebooting (which should become obvious as in the case of it rebooting a booting up email will follow shortly). I then copied rc.local to another location, ensured it had the executable bit set, and used Lingon to execute it on boot since rc.local does not seem to be working. Emails upon sleep and wake (machine set to sleep after one minute when switched to battery and acwake has been set to 1 via pmset so that when power resumes the machine automatically wakes up effectively turning the laptop battery into a UPS) are taken care of via sleepwatcher.

  • Nano 7 auto shutdown and reboots after playing videos?

    Hello,my nano 7 is very new, and i just tried to sync videos into it today. when i tried to play them, it would automatically shutdown and reboot.Anyone know how to solve this or have similar problems?

    Okydoky a new fascinating bug has been found!
    I now relabeld all songs with no album with a "no album" tag. I thought I could handle that way the problem with the "no album bug", well I thought. Now all the songs are shown in the display but I can't play all songs through because the player hangs up. When I select just one album to play through it works fine.

    Let the battery fully darain. After charging for an least an hour try a reset and restore. Use Recovery mode if necessary.
    If not successful, then time for an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

  • XFCE - Shutdown and Reboot buttons greyed-out (SOLVED)

    This issue cropped up for me a couple of weeks ago.  Just sat down to try and find a solution.  Followed several suggestions from several posts to no avail.
    Finally discovered that the syntax for achieving this in "/etc/sudoers" has evidently changed.
    This is what I got from the XFCE site: http://forum.xfce.org/viewtopic.php?pid=21331 and is very similar to what's in the Arch Wiki, https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Al … o_Shutdown. So I had been using the following line in /etc/sudoers and it had been working:
    %users mylaptopname=NOPASSWD: /usr/lib/xfce4/xfsm-shutdown-helper
    At some point in an XFCE upgrade the path to "xfsm-shutdown-helper" changed to "/usr/lib/xfce4/session/xfsm-shutdown-helper"
    I changed the path to "xfsm-shutdown-helper" but that didn't solve the problem.
    Finally I tried this in /etc/sudoers:
    %users  ALL=(ALL)       NOPASSWD: /sbin/shutdown -h now,/sbin/reboot
    And all the usual options in the shutdown menu re-appeared.
    Hope this helps someone.

    Replying to my own post because of what I've discovered since I first posted this.
    Most importantly, the fix which I thought had fixed this problem didn't really work.  I was snookered into thinking it had.  But I've found another solution which appears to be working now, thus this post.
    Here's what I've found.
    I had no login/display manager on my laptop.  I was auto-logging into my desktop with this setting in /etc/inittab:
    x:5:once:/bin/su myusername -l -c '/usr/bin/startx >/dev/null 2>&1'
    The snooker alluded to above was this:  If I booted to a command line and issued "startx" to start XFCE, I would have the shutdown and reboot buttons available on the logout dialog.
    But if I booted directly into the desktop, I didn't.  It's taken me a while to figure out that this is what was going on.
    Even though my old setup had worked for the almost 2 years I've been using Arch and XFCE, some upgrade somewhere in  recent months prevented it from working any longer.
    My final fix was to install a login manager, in my case, lxdm.  And set it to auto log me into my desktop.
    I now have the expected reboot and logout menus.
    Hope this helps someone.  This has been a bear to figure out.

  • Shutdown and reboot logging

    Is there any file that keeps shutdowns and reboots track? or
    i should use wtmpx?

    Unia wrote:
    Which one did you install? You have to run it before you can see the icon:
    $ gnome-power-manager
    or
    $ xfce4-power-manager
    Add it to whatever startup script you use to have it launch at boot.
    Note: a power manager won't give you a shutdown dialog AFAIK. At least gnome-power-manager doesn't.
    ...Y'know, I really should've actually tried adding it to my xinitrc! I stupidly assumed that because running it via gmrun or a shell didn't bring up an icon, that adding it to my xinitrc wouldn't make any difference! Thanks a lot Unia
    EDIT: Okay... so I jumped the gun a bit, I tried adding gnome-power-manager and xfce4-power-manager to my xinitrc and both did nothing

    Hi

    Use RECOVERY MODE.
    Boot from another drive with a copy of OS X too is always good.
    A Safe Boot at a minimum.

  • Systemd - kdm - xfce session: shutdown and reboot disappears randomly

    I use systemd and kdm as login manager; my desktop is XFCE.
    Immediately after login, if I click the logout button applet in the xfce panel, I can access all the options (shutdown, reboot, etc).
    But sometimes, after a while during the session, the shutdown and reboot option simply disappear - only logout works. If I log out to KDM and then again log in, they reappear.
    Does anyone have a clue about this?

    Just FYI the wikis were updated:
    Note: slim is ConsoleKit capable since version 1.3.3. Unless you happen to run an old version, you must no longer include ck-launch-session in your .xinitrc or slim.conf login_cmd.

  • HT5390 have a Mac mini server in the data center no physical access. Is it possible to configure a remote "console" that allows shutdown  and reboot remotely ?

    A mini mac used for building sits in the data center normally we access via VNC network connection.
    I want to have "console" access to shutdown and reboot system.
    Reason. Updated to Mountain Lion OS X from 10.7.x and lost VNC connections, now host is down with no physical access.
    Alternate is to call data center and see if someone can cycls the power ?

    As mentioned by Linc there is no 'lights out' management for the Mac mini (or any current Mac). If the Mac is still running you can initiate a reboot via the GUI or commandline. If however it is completely crashed then there is a solution you could consider which is to get a managed power distribution strip. With this the power strip has its own network connection and lets you remotely turn off (and on) individual power sockets. This would then let you 'hard reboot' the Mac mini even if crashed.
