Shutdown during gameplay MSI N580GTX Lightning GeForce GTX 580 Frozr III

Hello everyone,
I recently purchased a brand new n580 GTX Lightning Frozr III and received my card yesterday.  The installation went smoothly and it booted into Windows fine, until I ran into problems running benchmarks.
I'm a little hazy on my system specs, but I will get you more accurate specs when I have the sheet in front of me:
The specs:
======================
IntelDuoCore 2
2.0 GHZ
1 kilowatt PSU
Liquid Cooling
Windows 7 64bit
8 GB SDRAM
Ageia PhysX card (Removed, most people don't even know these existed!)
======================
I knew from the beginning that my processor was going to bottleneck my CPU, but the performance is way better than when I used the Geforce 8800 GTX SLI settings.
The Problem:
======================
Mafia 2 - Max settings, including PhysX, aliasing, resolution
A few minutes into the benchmark, basically as soon as the car explodes.
Computer shut down.
Crysis Warhead - Drove down a random rode and crashed into an exploding barrel.
Computer shut down.
APB - Managed to drive around the city for a few minutes, no explosions, no fighting nothing.
Went into the garage, to look at some cars.
Computer shut down.
======================
So I'm having trouble narrowing down what the problem is. I don't think it's overheating because my liquid cooling is doing its job. I don't think it's a driver conflict because I ran driver sweeper and cleaned out all of the old Nvidia drivers.
So, either my card is consuming too much power or my PSU isn't outputting enough power.
I will get specific system specs later on.

Total system shutdown, if thats really the case is most likely psu issue that it dont deliver enough power card and overcurrent protection kicks in and shut the system down to prevent damage. Ive had exatly that issue in past when tried to run GTX470 SLI with 650w psu After i upgraded upgraded to 750w everything worked silky smooth after that.
That's right, its what i tell him here: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=149377.msg1109284#msg1109284

If it would be driver related issue it wouldnt cause shudown and would bem ore likly to receive bluescreen or some windwos driver recovery.
This is a separate, second case when he test VGA it friends machine. He don't have shutdown issues there.

wattage of the psu:s dont really tell the whole truth these days. Some older 1000w psu:s with multiple 12v rails are actually worse for modern power hungry gfx cards than modern single 12v rail 600w psu

75A current

Peak Output ATX12V V2.3 / EPS12V V2.91
SLI Ready CrossFire Ready
80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply
You need ampere @+12V not amperes on something else.[video card is powered by +12V line]
This 75A is not related to +12V lines, which is unknown for this split 2x30A, with total under 60A for sure [guess probably around up to 50A combined[if the PSU support combined mode]]

Playing aan entire level of Crysis or Crysis2 with extreme settings is a very sure way to test. A multiplayer round of BF3 at max settings is also a good test.
If you got the max stable clockrates without overvolting and temps are fine. Go on adding voltage in small steps and agin try the highest max clockrate of any voltage step. That way you'll find the total max clockrate. At some point adding voltage will have no effect anymore and that is the highest clockrate. Remember that voltage unlike just higher clockrates will increase the temps massively.
    Agreed with flobelix
Crysis 2 with ultra setting and set Vsync to Disabled is a very hard test in real life application, I don't use furmark or kombustor. To test stability first I run Vantage and 3DMark2011 then playing Crysis 2 about 2 - 3 hours every day for aweek or 2 weeks and if pass then I call it stable
I use GTX580 Lightning and at stock volt I can do 920/2200 with all little DIP switches turned ON/Enabled/Unlocked excluding Xtreme cooling LN2 DIP switch since I use normal air cooling and not LN2. If I let all DIP switches to their stock/OFF even at 900MHz I can't pass Vantage.
For safe daily OC better stay under 80c for your core temp and under 70c for your VRM & Memory temp  also do not use beyond +200mv for your core voltage (+200mv is the max value)
Note : For 24/7 I use 980/2300 with +112mv/+40mv. VRM and memory temp are under 60c and Core temp is under 80c.

  • N780 Lightning (GeForce GTX 780 LIGHTNING) wich psu do i need?

Hi guys in a couple of weeks im gonna buy this N780 Lightning (GeForce GTX 780 LIGHTNING) http://eu.msi.com/product/vga/N780-Lightning.html
I need to know which or what kind of power suply unit i need to buy, willing to spend about 130 euro's
    My system looks like this:
    AMD FX-8320
    fxa990-gd80
16gb of value ram ( i know it sucks, will be upgraded later!)
    2tb HD
cpu cooler is a neptin with 2 120mm fans
And i have one big fan in the front side of my case
Thanks in advance for your input!

Minimum psu requirement is 42A and 600W. Make sure to go for a quality single rail psu. Corsair psus have proved to work flawlessly while being at a good price point. To have some headroom go for a higher class psu than needed. A 750 - 800W psu like CX750 or GS800 would be good and saving money. High end would be TX or HX series psus.

  • MSI N580GTX lightning running at stock specs

    Hi,
I just bought two MSI N580GTX lightning for my sli setup .
One of my card is running at 772mhz ( stock ) speed with standard bios and the other one is at
832mhz ( as it should be ) also with standard bios .
So is there a way to fix the first one to run at 832mhz instead of 772 ? I know how to do it with MSI AB but i want a bios fix.
the two cards differs in respect with their bios , 1st one is 70.10.17 and the 2nd one is 17.10.20 , so i'm guessing something
is wrong with the 70.10.17 bios . So can i extract the bios from the 2nd card and use it in the 1st ?
p.s. if I use the ln2 bios for the 1st card , then it runs at the factory oc settings .
    Thanks

ok close the thread as I found out what the problem was.
They mixed up the bios with ln2 and standard, as the standard was showing CBB FIX ( which should be in ln2 for sub zero ocing ).
    anyways , awesome cards

  • Revamp!!! MSI N580GTX Lightning Extreme Edition VC

MSI N580GTX Lightning Extreme Edition is a reconstructed N580GTX Lightning but with 3GB DDR5 memory and redesigned Twin FrozrIII cooler (propeller blade fan’s color changes from blue to white if the card gets hot and the fan rotates backwards for 30 seconds each time the computer starts to remove dusts on the fan). The card still has the enhanced voltage controls and power circuitry where the Lightning series stands out. Compared from a regular 580GTX power phase, the EX has 16+1 (12 for the GPU Core, 3 for the memory and 1 for the PLL/VDDC Power).
At the back area of the card, you will find useful switches for unlocking the Memory, GPU, PLL voltages / Over Current Protection Power Unlocker/ PWM Clock Tuner / and LN2 Bios switch for Cold Bug Fix.
Below are more in-depth specs of the Lightning EX:
    • Pre-overclocked GPU Core is running at 832 MHz
    • 3072MB GDDR5 4200MHz Memory
    • Video Output Functions – 2x Dual-Link DVI, 1x HDMI and 1x Display Port
    • Compose of Military Class 2 Components for longer lifespan and better overclocking ability (Solid Capacitors, Super Ferrite Chokes, Hi-C Caps, Lightning Power PCB Layer, Copper MOS and Proadilizer)
    • Capable of Two-Way or 3-Way SLI Configuration
Black colored underneath plate which serves as heatsink for memory and VRM chips. It also acts as support or brace for long video cards so that it won’t slant down once installed.
Accessories included with the VC Package:
•Two SLI Bridges for multi GPU configuration
•2x 6pin Power to 8pin PCIE Power Connector
    •DVI to VGA Connector
    •Software & Utility DVD
    •Manual and Quick Guide
    •V-Check Points Connector
Lightning EX at stock speed for all the tests.  The only component that I overclocked was the 2600K processor to determine bottlenecks. PhysX was also disabled so that equal comparison can be made against an AMD ATI VC model.
    Test System Configuration:
•Processor: 2600K with Fenrir Heatsink Fan
    •Motherboard: Z68A-GD80
    •Memory: Kingston 2x2GB DDR3 2133MHz
    •Harddrive: Kingston SSD VNow+ 128GB
    •PSU: Antec TPQ-1200
    3dmark06 Result: 24777
    Vantage Result: 25614
    3dmark11 Result: 6535
Next with the 2600K overclocked at 5.1GHz. Video Card performance did increased. This shows that you have to run your 2600k at least at 4.5 – 4.8GHz to cope up with the Lightning EX’s Power.
    3dmark06 2nd Result: 35384
    Vantage 2nd Result: 28741
    3dmark11 2nd Result: 6815
N580GTX Lightning is such a powerful card that even at stock settings, power performance is enough to play all latest games in high resolution with extreme detail settings. Then if the power is still enough for you, you could still use the MSI Afterburner Software to juice out more from the video card or configure it in SLI.

Most games/bench crashes with default clock @ 1.031v. I tried to overvolted & undervolted the GPU, but my tests were not conclusive. The only way i've found to have all games/benchs stable is to downclock the GPU as I explained in my first post.

  • Geforce gtx 580

Hi. I,m looking to buy a Geforce gtx 580 for PP CS5.5.   Searching the web I have come across several different "brands" of the same card such as PNY, Palit, Zotac, EVGA etc. Are they all the same card? Are some better than other? Any help would be much appreciated.

My favorite two vendors are EVGA and PNY.  I have some of both.but as far as better the first thing I would do is check the warranty.  Also notice the amount of video memory if you are using large frame sizes more memory may help.  Do not pay extra for an over clocked (sometimes called super clocked) board as it will not do you any good with Premiere.  Notice here at Newegg you have a choice of 19 different versions.  Some of these are already showing discounts and rebates.  Be aware that within just a few months there will be a whole new series that will essential replace the GTX 5xx series, it will be the GTX 7xx series.   At that point in time there will be some significant reductions in the current 5xx series and (probably) faster new boards to consider.

  • MSI N580GTX Lightning Extreme Edition (Black Screen / Reboot)

    Hi everyone !
    Here's my computer specs :
    CPU: Intel I7 870 (2.93 Ghz)
MoBo: Micro ATX from my Dell XPS Studio 8000
    Memory: 6Go DDR 667 Mhz
    PSU: Corsair HX750(w)
    Windows 7 Pro 64 Bits
    My problem :
80% of my games (Crysis 1 & 2, Bulletstorm,...) & benchs (3DMark 11, MSI Kombustor, ...) crashes after few seconds. My graphic card goes off, black screen, and then my computer automatically reboot. I've tried another PSU, same pb, and my Corsair HX750 is new. So I wonder if the problem is from my graphics card or my (dell) motherboard ? But my config has the minimum required by MSI.
    My temporary solution
After few tests with differents drivers, I've try to change the Core Voltage, no result... So I decided to downclock the GPU freqs.
In order to have something stable to 100%, and be able to run all the games and benchs, i've to downclock the GPU like :
    Core Clock : 600 Mhz (Original : 772 Mhz)
    Shader Clock : 1200 Mhz (Original : 1544 Mhz)
    Memory Clock : 1730 Mhz (Original : 2004 Mhz)
    Its a big loss frequency!
Hope a new bios will come out to fix the bug.

Re flash the card which comes with 823MHz with BIOS attached below.
    How to:
    Create a USB key bootable
How to make USB key bootable: http://www.bay-wolf.com/usbmemstick.htm
Then get attached file, and extract & copy all files nvflash.exe, CWSDPMI.EXE and 103.rom
    to the USB key.
Then reboot the computer and boot from the bootable USB key,
when you see A:\ or C:\ type:
    nvflash.exe -b old.rom [ENTER]
Wait process to finish, this will backup/save your current VBIOS.
Then flash the new VBIOS with:

  • Satellite P100-347 - problem with shutdown during gameplay

i have a problem with my Satellite P100-347(pspa6e)
After about 10 minutes playtime with games like battlefield 2, the SIMS2 and so on.. my pc shuts down...
I suspected it was shutting down because of high gpu or cpu temp...
i could feel that my notebook was hot, but after playing for a while its normal...
so i installed HWmonitor to check my gpu,cpu and hdd temp...
    this is what i shows:
    THRM: 61.C - 141.F
    CPU: core0\1 - both 64.C - 147.F
    GPU: runs at stable 85 - 90.C
    this at normal use...not games....
    HDD: 39.C
Something has to be wrong!! gpu temp has to be too high?!?
i have tried a fresh OS install....
thnx for all answers and help!

    Hello
I agree with Akuma. The fact is that suddenly shutdowns are mostly caused by too high temperature and shutdown is actually reaction for ??hardware protection??.
So what you should do is to clean up the cooling grill.
There is just one problem: if this should be done properly the notebook must be disassembled. So the question is how you want to do this?
At the moment, try to place your notebook on higher position, maybe on 4 books to make more distance between the notebook and the desk. I just hope the air circulation will be better and you will be able to play a little bit longer. Please test it and let us know what will happen.

  • Qosmio X500 shutdown during gameplay - but only on external power !

    Hi.
Since I updated my BIOS to 2.9 I've had this HUGE problem. And now I've created a user here, in hope of my fellow Toshiba owners guidance.
Let me cut it out, as it's confusing enough for me.
I bought the computer in march 2010 - so it's still under warranty.
I updated the BIOS from 2.8 to 2.9. I've always kept my computer up to date with latest Toshiba drivers - and still is.
But now, after BIOS update, all of a sudden, my computer shuts down, instantly turns off, as if someone pulled the cord and there were no battery attached.
But this only happens when ever I start a really GPU demanding program/application. It doesn't happed when I use the computer for every-day stuff or watch movies etc.
I've put it though 3DVantage and of course it crashed.
    BUT!
If i pull the cord, and let it run on battery - even though the performance it puts out is lower - it doesn't crash, ever, in any game that would crash if I had the cord attached.
I've been in contact with Toshiba service in Scandinavia - as I live there, and they couldn't tell me what the problem was, but they were pretty sure it wasn't related to BIOS, because while I was talking to them, I installed 2.8, and the same thing happened.
It has been sprayed, sprayed and sprayed some more with compressed air, and if there's any dust left, it would be like concrete. I've run the games in windowed mode, while having Speedfan running, the temp never goes higher than 65 celcius. So it's not heat related.
I've used 3DVantage to test the CPU and see if that too would crash, again nothing.
I'm thinking along the terms of workload. The GPU shuts off when the workload exceeds a certain percent/voltage/whatever and something in the BIOS that controls this, has been changed, or left unchanged and there for isn't adept with the rest of the updates in the BIOS.
Or maybe the problem isn't BIOS related? is it something else? I'm really confused, and the fact I can use it for simple tasks, only confuses me even more - then it's only a part of the graphics card that's damaged?
Even though it's under warranty, waiting for 10 days (if i'm really really lucky, as place i've bought it, isn't exactly known for good repair service) is the last option.
This explanation is quite long, but I don't do short versions, and if you feel like I've left anything out, say so, and I will do my best to provide you with the information.
    Thanks in advance!
    Nikolaj.

It's the GPU that's reaching 65c and the CPU cores max were 60-62
Speedfan also shows a tab called Temp1 - ACPI .. it may be offtopic, but what is that?
When I control the windoes event log, it shows some errors concerning ACPI: (translated by myself from danish)
The integrated controller did not respond within the designated timeoutperiod. This could mean there is a malfunction in the integrated controllers hardware or firmware, or that BIOS is trying to access the integrated controller in a wrong way. You should contact the computer manufacture regarding getting an upgraded BIOS. In some situations this malfunction can cause the computer to work improperly.

Reason I'm asking about ACPI is the temp follows the cores, but maxed at 66. - could this have something to do with anything, or am I just confusing you?

  • 570 GTX Twin Frozr III strange noises

    Hi all, hope someone will know what's going on with my video card;
When I am on a game, it makes a strange buzzing noise
If i try using Kombustor, it makes a strange whirring noise
It seems to come from underneath the fan closest to the dvi ports
However, it doesn't appear to be coming directly from the fan itself, because when i'm not doing anything, I can change their speed, and they don't make any noise beyond their normal fan noise levels
Has anyone else experienced, or know what could be happening with my card?
Is it even safe to continue using?
    Thanks, J Green

As far as I can tell, it's coming from somewhere under the video card fan; someone has suggested it's the capacitors, and that if so it's safe to use, but i'm not so confident

  • Geforce GTX 570 Twin Frozr III PE/OC and BSOD

    Hi,
I have an MSI Geforce GTX 570 Twin Frozr III PE/OC which appears to be causing system instability (graphical corruption upon boot i.e before windows), and BSOD. It typically occurs from a cold boot resulting in BSOD after the Windows logo. This will occur 2-3 times. The system then runs stably.
I have tracked this problem down to this card when running at x16 mode in my primary PCIe slot (slot 2, x16_1) on my motherboard. It does not occur if the card is in slot 5 (x16_2) where it only runs at x8 speed (2.5Gb/s rather than 5Gb/s). This does not occur if I place a borrowed Geforce GTX 260 in the primary PCIe slot (it runs at x16 fine and causes no such system instability).
I have tried out various mobo BIOS updates, checked all my system files, updated (and rolled back) my NVIDIA drivers, and checked my memory for errors with Memtest 86+. I cannot find any updates to my video card BIOS.
Can I assume the card is faulty, or does anyone have any other possible solutions?
    Spec is:
    Windows 7 64-bit
    Intel I5-2500K
    Asus P8Z68V-Gen 3 mobo
    8Gb Corsair DDR3 1800 mem
MSI Geforce GTX Twin Frozr III PE/OC
    Cheers!

Its a Corsair 750TX V2 (750 watt). I am also running 1 SSD, 2 hard drives and a blue-ray optical drive. You don't think its too much for the PSU do you?
    The PSU its plenty enough

No I haven't tried it on another computer and I don't think its very likely I'll get the chance.
there is not much options then, except to RMA the card and to hope the problem to be there.
    [else the problem will remain]
