Shutdown failure, have to force shutdown evertime

After pressing the shutdown button, normally there'll be a circle running on the lower center of the screen. But after reinstalling my OS it startEd to not appear and I waited for minutes but still didn't shut down. Tried a few times but I have to force shutdown evertime. How to fix? Thanks!

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
          View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the BOOT_TIME log message that corresponds to the last boot time when you had the problem. Now clear the search box to reveal all messages. Select the ones logged before the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down for three minutes before you forced a restart, post the messages timestamped within three minutes before the boot time, not after. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract—not at the beginning.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Step 2
In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
          View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". A shutdown stall report has a name that ends in ".shutdownstall". Select the most recent of each, if any. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot. It's possible that none of these reports exists.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • Hi, I am having trouble MacBook Air crashing since Yosemite upgrade. I ran an Etresoft check but I don't know what it means... my system runs slowly and crashes. I have to force shutdown. Sometimes screen is black for a split second b/w webmail pages

    Hello,
I am having trouble with my MacBook Air 13 inch June 2012 MacBook Air5, 2 4GB RAM  details below in Etresoft report. I recently upgraded to Yosemite and am having system trouble. My computer crashes and I have to force quit to restart. When using webmail there is a black screen for a split second between pages. This did not happen before. I am worried that it is not running properly and perhaps I need to revert to the previous operating system. I only have a MacBook Air and no need to share images between a tablet or phone so I did not need the new photo sharing software of Yosemite. I wonder if I don't have enough RAM to run it? I did not run time machine before I made the upgrade as I did not realise the significance of an upgrade as not very Mac literate. Any advice on whether my system is in danger... most appreciated! I am writing a book and making a back up but this machine is my lifeline and my work is conducted through it. It ran perfectly before... the Yosemite upgrade has perhaps highlighted some problems and it has unnerved me!
Thanks ever so much for your advice!
    Lillibet

When you have kernel panics, the pertinent information is in the panic report.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

  • Have to force-quit Mail - Update did not fix

The update seemed to fix all of the issues I had with SL, except for the spinning wheels in Mail, and that Mail will not quit without a force-quit. It will even cancel a restart. Am I the only one left with this issue?

    Problem
Here is what is happening. Btw I am using a Dutch version so my apologies if I translate menu-options wrong.
Mail is opened at startup. When I want to quit (CMD-Q) mail, nothing happens and the program gets in a sort of wait state. The system doesn't say that mail is not responding anymore. When I open the Mail-menu several options are greyed-out, including the CMD-Q as if the program is waiting for something. After waiting 15 minutes still the same and the only way to end mail is by using the force quit option.
If Mail is opened and I use the red X to close the window it isn't possible to open it anymore. Stopping the normal way isn't possible either and I am in the same situation as above and need to force-quit Mail.
If I leave Mail open and want to shutdown the computer I have to force quit Mail, because otherwise I cannot shutdown anymore.
    *Solutions I've tried*
Using the Rebuild menu-option doesn't help.
I have downloaded the complete 10.6.2 dmg-file and re-installed it. This seemed to fix the problem, at least for a little while. But unfortunately after a day the same problem came back
    How can this be possible?
Is there anyone out there who has the same problem and knows how to fix this? Would it help to re-install the mailprogram? How do I do this?
This is happening on the new computer of my father. I have convinced him to make the switch from Windows, but this situation is making me feel a bit embarrassed

  • Safari gives me the spinning wheel every time I browse, have to force-quit

    Hello,
I've been having a ton of issues with Safari these past few weeks. I'm using version 3.2.1 (4524.27.1) and I've reset, trashed preferences, nuked fonts, run OnyX, repaired permissions... and I'm still having the same problems.
Basically after I've browsed for about 5 minutes, Safari will hang on whatever page I'm trying to load, whether I'm loading up pages in multiple tabs or just a single page. Sometimes I can get the page to finish loading and continue browsing if I hit "stop" and "reload" a bunch of times, but mostly I get the spinning beach ball wheel, and then Safari shows up as "not responding" in my Force Quit Applications window. The program doesn't crash - it just gives me the spinning ball until I have to force-quit, relaunch, and start over - only to do it all again.
It's driving me bonkers - I even had the cable company come out and check my cable modem connection (I'm using RoadRunner), but it was running normally.
Below is my console log from this morning, when I started up and had to force-quit Safari again. Hopefully the issue is really obvious and I can get back to normal:

    Hi everyone -
First off, thanks for all the suggestions. I've tried each one - unfortunately, Safari is still giving me the spinning wheel when I surf for more than a couple of minutes.
Taking QuicktimeKirk's advice, I did a discussions search for "DNS issue" and found several threads that recommended adding OpenDNS DNS Servers to the Network preferences pane (208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220). I also registered at the OpenDNS website and installed their "OpenDNS Updater" software.
After I did this, Safari seemed to actually go to the spinning wheel, freeze-up state quicker... although I might be a bit paranoid.
I forgot to mention that I already had "Warn when visiting a fraudulent website" checked off the in the preferences pane, and replacing Safari with Firefox as the default browser unfortunately didn't make much of a difference.
I'm copying below my most recent Console log. Perhaps there's something different I need to do with DNS...? Quicktime Kirk, if you suspect it's something to do with DNS, could you please be more specific with regards to what I should be looking for? I really appreciate it.
Thanks again for all the tips, everyone. I've got my fingers crossed that with your help, I'll be back to normal soon!

Hmm. The problem still may be the RAM - Apple buys the RAM it puts in its machines from third-party vendors (usually Hynix) so it could be a RAM problem.
There are a couple of things that you can do yourself before taking your machine into an Apple Store or an AASP... download and run an application named Rember that will run a RAM test for you - let it run for a couple of hours or even overnight. If it turns out that your RAM is faulty, Rember will let you know. If it is faulty, then you have a couple of options - replace the RAM yourself or (particularly if you're under warranty still) take the machine to an Apple Store or AASP and have them replace the RAM.
If Rember finds no fault with the RAM, then you'll need to take it into an Apple Store/AASP and get a free diagnosis on the machine. Three beeps do usually indicate faulty RAM, but if it tests good with Rember you likely have another problem - it could be something as simple as the RAM, somehow, not seated correctly or signs of another hardware problem.
Run Rember first... call back with results.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Firefox/Safari were constantly crashing- now have to force-quit all other apps on MBP..

I really hope someone can help me. I've been having an issue with apps on my MBP crashing for like 9 months and it's getting worse and I'm losing my mind! It started with Firefox. Everything will be going along fine, and then suddenly I'll try to scroll down on a web page or click a link or really do anything and there will be a rainbow scrolly wheel delay that can last anywhere from 5-20 seconds.  I'll tolerate it for a little while, but eventually I can't take it anymore and try to shut down Firefox, which I can only do with a force quit.  Sometimes the delay is accompanied by a crazy increase in CPU which triggers the fans, but sometimes it's not.  It usually happens when I have multiple tabs open.  A while back I tried removing all my Firefox add-ons and plug-ins and whatnots (including Flash and Java), to no avail.  So I broke down and started using Safari...and the same thing happened. Went back to FF and keep upgrading to the newest versions, but the problem hasn't gone away.
Then, a couple of months ago, a few of my other "big" apps (i.e. iTunes and Adobe Reader) started experiencing similar delay issues.  No scrolly wheel appears on these, but everything  just takes forever and the only way to close these apps is to force quit.  Over the past month or so, the issue has  spread to my MS Office apps.  For these, the delay is largely contained to opening and closing new docs/presentations, but I have to force quit to close them too.
In February, I decided to move to Lion, but changed my mind when I read that people were still having issues with decreased speed and spotty internet connectivity.  I was afraid to do anything that might make things worse.
My MBP is turning 5 this month. I wouldn't be entirely surprised to hear that she's just experiencing the effects of old-age (after all, 5 years is  2X longer than my old PC lasted), but I've been unemployed for well over 2 years and am not exactly itching to get a new computer right now if I don't have to.  I did upgrade the hard drive about a year ago, but things were fine for the first few months after that.  Maybe that wouldn't create problems right away, though. I don't know.  Anyway, I'm running OS 10.6.8, Firefox 13, iTunes 10.6.1, Adobe Reader 10.1.3 and Office 2008.
I would be most grateful to anyone who can offer a potential home-repair solution (one which does not require mad IT skills), knows what the problem might be and/or how much it might cost to have it professionally diagnosed/repaired.  Depending on what it could cost to diagnose/fix it, it might not even pay to bother.
    Thank you!!!

    Mark,
Have you checked the Fonts folder found in Home/Library/Fonts folder if you have any fonts in there, try moving them to the trash but do not empty the bin.
Read Kurt Lang's ~ Font Management in Mac OS X
on required fonts, for apple applications.
This app is a goodie Font Finagler helps find & remove corrupt fonts.
Have you tried a test account so you can narrow done if this is isolated to your username account, or if it is system wide.
Disabling "troublemakers" doesn't always work, uninstalling can be more telling & what are they anyway the troublemakers you speak of?
What have you tried to troubleshoot?
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25392
Do you use any internet cleaning apps to clean internet clutter?
    OnyX Niel'sClearing caches with OnyX
Cache cleaning does help, but beyond empty the cache under Safari.
Checked the console.log & system.log for any clues?
Lastly are you very committed to running 10.4.7? (If your spex are correct)
if you decide to update see Macmaps , yes this hanging of apps. should be tended
    first.

Microsoft Office 2004 (Word) unable to save files
I have been running Office 2004 on my Intel iMac with Snow Leopard for some time and all of a sudden I cannot save a document. Word just stopped responding and I have to force quit. I can open Word and create a new document but I cannot save it. I reinstalled Word but that didn’t help. Then went to the Internet and found at least one other Mac user having the same problem which it suggests is caused by a recent Mac Security Update:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac/forum/macoffice2004-macword/word-2004-wil l-not-open-or-save-documents/b04eb870-9b0d-4f3b-bb47-b122301e36f6
So I check for a new Mac Security Update and sure enough there was one. I downloaded it and now Word seems to be working, as it should. I can both open and save files. The only problem remaining is that when I open Word I get the following error message “An unexpected error occurred while trying to load the Microsoft Framework library”. I contacted Apple but they were unable to help.
How can I get rid of this error message?

Look, I realize you might have to get your machine working, so this is how you revert back.
    Restore proceedure to pre-Security Update 2012-001 v 1.0 & v 1.1
#1 Backup your personal data off the machine.
Backup files off the computer (not to TimeMachine). If you don't have a external drive, get one and connect to the USB/Firewire port and simply drag and drop copy your User folder to the external drive, it will copy all your files. It's best to have two backups of your data off the machine when trying to restore.
Disconnect all drives now to prevent any mistakes from occuring.
    #2 Reinstall OS X 10.6 from disk
Get out your 10.6 install disk and make sure it's clean and polished (very soft cloth and a bit of rubbing alcohol, no scratches) If your disk is borked, you'll have to order a new one from Apple with your serial number.
Hold c boot off the 10.6 disk (wired keyboard, internal optical drive), use Disk Utility First Aid to >Repair Disk  of your internal drive  (do not format or erase!!), Quit DU and simply re-install 10.6.
Note: Simply reinstalling 10.6 version from disk (without erasing the drive) only replaces 10.6.8 with 10.6.x and bundled Apple programs, won't touch your files (backup anyway)  or most programs, unless they installed a kext file into OS X itself. (only a few on average do this)
    #3 Update to 10.6.8 without Security Update 2012-001 v1.0 or v1.1
Reboot and log in, update to 10.6.8 via Software Update, but EXCLUDE THE Security Update 2012-001 by checkinig the details and unchecking the blue check box.
#4 Reinstall any non-working third party programs
When you reboot, make sure to reinstall any programs that require kext files installed into OS X, you'll know, they won't work when you launch them or hang for some reason as they are missing the part they installed into OS X.
If for some freakish reason you get gray screen at any time when booting (possible it might occur when you reinstall older programs), hold the shift key down while booting (Safe Mode, disables kext files) and update your installed third party software so it's compatible with 10.6.8.

    That's it really.

  • When I open firefox, it won't load any sites, and it won't let use the drop downs, I have to force quit --running os 10.6.7

Was using firefox this am, working fine, I tried to open a new tab while I was uploading a file, it froze. I restarted the computer---same problem. reinstalled firefox--same problem. am having to write this in safari because I can start firefox up, but it just hangs, and I have to force quit

i'm using firefox 3.6.13 and windows XP home SP3. when i visit zynga poker at facebook.com it turn slowly to open the application. when i try to navigate away, firefox does not respond. when i close the firefox and try to reopen it, i get nothing. i have to physically go into the task manager and end the firefox.exe process manually before i can go back. i have tried to uninstall and then reinstall firefox, but it didn't work, i tried also to sending the crash report from crashreporter.exe, the warning box said: "This application is run after a crash to report the problem to the application vendor. It should not be run directly", what should i do?

  • When I open pages, it immediately hangs up and I have to force quit.

When I open pages from the dock,  the page comes up on my screen but immediately hangs up with the little revolving circle.  I have to force quit finally to get the page to go off my screen.  This is sporodic.  Sometimes it works and sometime it does not.

The Problem Report which I had was: "Pages quit unexpectedly while using the SFWordProcessing plugin".
I'm using iWork '09 in OSX Lion 10.7.4
Here are all the things I tried:
    Deleting preference files
    Deleting iWork Pages caches
Restoring preferences from yesterday's version in Time Machine
Finding the SFWordProcessing plugin in HD/Library/Application Support/iWork '09/Frameworks
Restoring the SFWordProcessing plugin from yesterday's version in Time Machine
Using Disk Utility to repair permissions (none needed)
Using Disk Utility to verify the HD (no problems found)
Scanning the HD for malware with ClamXav (none found)
Showing package contents of Pages and restoring items from yesterday's versions in Time Machine
Opening Pages (successfully) from another user account
The problem occurred after trying to open (convert) a 125-page MSWord document. Pages appeared to hang but was just slow. After opening the file Pages did hang. I right-clicked on the Pages icon in the dock and, seeing 'Application not responding' selected 'Force Quit. Thereafter I had the problem with Pages hanging on opening. I then moved the MSWord document to another location while I discussed with the trusted colleague who'd e-mailed it to me what to do with it.
Eventually, after trying all of the approaches above (mostly suggestions from Apple Community help pages) I somehow stumbled upon what was causing the problem and how to clear it...
In Finder pull down on the 'Go' menu
    Select 'Go to Folder'
Type in ~/Library/ which takes you to your user Library (a hidden folder)
In my user Library I found a folder called 'Autosave Information'
Delete anything in this folder associated with iWork Pages
    Voilá!

  • I have a mac book pro running OS 10.5.8 and firefox has always been fine but for the last two days it is slow to open and run and wont shut down, I have to force quit. Is there a current problem?

I have to force quit because my mac says "Firefox not responding" this happens on both my work network and home (cable) network.

My best guess would be that the version of Safari you're using is outdated and unsupported by Outlook.com/Hotmail.com. Since you're still running Leopard (OS X 10.5), the best solution is to try Chrome 22 or Firefox 16 (the latest versions supported by Leopard).
Otherwise, I would upgrade to at least Snow Leopard (10.6) then you can run the newest versions of both Firefox and Chrome. You can get the upgrade for free from Apple if you call their customer support.
I have the same model of Macbook and am running the newest version of OS X, Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8), without a problem. Then you would be able to run the latest version of Safari as well (version 6).
EDIT: Here are links to older versions of Chrome and Firefox.

  • Safari 3.2.1 freezes up, have to force quit

Speak slowly. Like my car, I just drive this thing. I don't know what's under the hood (since about 1975). I see a lot of other folks are having problems like this. I don't keep a journal, but I think this started when I downloaded the last update.
I've been using Safari without a hitch for about four years, and suddenly, six weeks ago or so, it started freezing up while browsing (blue bar stops after "http", spinning beachball of death appears) and I have to force quit to get out. There are two user accounts on my computer, and the other one doesn't seem to be having a problem (it's rarely used). I can browse for a minute or two, four or five sites, and then the problem occurs. I'm using Firefox as a backup, and not having problems with it. I haven't updated Firefox lately, and don't intend to as long as it works.
I've tried repairing disk permissions, deleting Safari plist, clearing my cache, history, and cookies, and reset Safari. Nothing changed, and I'm a little reluctant to start trying all the suggestions I see on various strings.
I've sent dozens of crash reports to Apple. I assume others have too. Must be a pretty tough problem if Apple hasn't issued an update to fix it by now. Can anybody with more savvy help?
I tried including the latest crash report in this post and got this report:
500 Unable to insert thread into the database: Data truncation: Data too long for column 'body' at row 1
Resin Professional 3.0.23 (built Mon, 22 Jan 2007 02:25:17 PST)

Klaus 1's suggestion doesn't work for me. When I select System Preferences > Network, I get a window titled Network, with two dialog boxes: DNS Server in which it says "10.0.0.1" and Search Domains, which is blank. When I double click on my connection type, nothing happens. I don't get the dialog boxes Klaus 1 describes.
Here's some more crash report. I still get the "too big" report when I try to send it all. "500 Unable to insert message into the database: Data truncation: Data too long for column 'body' at row 1"
