Shutdown/Login: solved

Newly installed Gnome (64 bit).
The Shutdown/Logout buttons both put me into the GDM login screen.
Seems like permissions to me.
Can someone help?

It has started doing it again...intermittently.
I also have optical drive problems and flickering monitor display which I never had before...doesn't matter if I use nv or the proprietary Nvidia driver.
Just updated a Sidux install and an Arch Kdemod and the same problems have suddenly appeared (not the shutdown ones, but neither are gnome).
Both Sidux and Arch are using the latest kernels  and I KNOW that I didn't omit adding all the above groups to my user.
So I installed a stable Deb just to see if all these problems occurred...none of them did. Thank god...I was thinking new monitor.
It has to be the latest kernels and my hardware in my opinion. I also have a Deb testing install which has been running fine for nearly three years which has also just gone ape after updating.
I use smxi in Sidux so I can easily revert to an earlier kernel to test my theory if I didn't delete them which I think I maybe did! I'll get back on that.
Meanwhile in Arch is there an easy way to revert to an earlier (30 or 29) kernel?

  • To Everyone with Random Shutdowns! (Solved! REALLY!)

    Hey all,
I had posted about a week back about my Macbook (Core duo white, late 2006), it was having the same symptoms as some of the others with the known random shutdown syndrome (RSS). Like many others I had thought it was the end of my macbook and the logicboard needed replacing because that is what the 'genius' people do, but I was still wondering what would cause it. It would randomly shut off! (or so I thought) I'd be typing in Safari, watching a youtube video, and even playing games, it would just shut off and I could hear the hard drive spin down. I'd restart and it would do it again sometimes right away, sometimes hours later.
This got me to thinking (like others have said) that it must be an issue with over heating. To test my theory I backed up my HD, and tried to reinstall Snow Leopard after zeroing the HD (as a fresh install). During the install process the Macbook's fan started to get loud and then it happened, it died again! So, this proved to me that it is NOT a software/OS issue at all, which means the said efforts in other posts of changing screen saver and energy saver settings had nothing to do with the cause! Aha moment!
I thought to myself... something is making it shutdown, obviously, and has to do with too much heat as the fan was going crazy even while reinstalling the OS. After reading many posts on different support forums I came accross the possibility that it could be the heatsink and/or sensor that is attached to it. I also found out that this "RSS" only applies to the non-unibody, core duo, and core 2 duo macbooks... you know what that means?
These models are the only ones with the shared memory and GPU on the same heatsink! GAH! A possible solution presents itself? To make a long post even longer... I removed the keyboard, carefully unscrewed the heatsink and fan and what did I see? Cracked and dried out thermal paste on the CPU AND GPU, they are both under the same heatsink after all, this was bad, really bad.
Luckily I had some Arctic Silver thermal paste in a tube from years ago when I upgraded my PowerMac CPU. Using some rubbing alcohol and a soft cloth I removed the crud on the heatsink, processor, and GPU (I might add that there was way too much paste on there in the first place). I waited an extra few minutes to make sure the alcohol evaporated, and then I applied a small (dime sized) amount of thermal past directly onto the two chips, I aligned the heatsink carefully and gave it a very small gentle push down onto the chips, reattached the sensor wire to the mainboard, and screwed the heatsink back in.
After putting the keyboard back on and making sure all screws were in... I immediately turned on the laptop and reinstalled the OS. The OS install took approximately 10 mintues! (crazy!) The last time I did that it took over 30 mins to install! I was stunned!
After the OS installed I let the computer idle and shut down, I let it sit for about an hour to allow the paste to contract as it cooled. After starting up again I immediately downloaded Temperature Monitor and installed it (I did have it running when my mac had RSS by the way), here are the results to prove my theory:
    My Macbook with RSS:
    CPU1 and CPU2 Idle temp - 114 degrees (F)
    Heatsink temp - 128 degrees (F)
Approximate over heating temp - 184 degrees (F) (causing the heatsink sensor to shutdown the laptop)
My Macbook with new high quality thermal paste:
    Idle temp of CPU1, CPU2, and GPU - 77 degrees (F)
    Heatsink temp - 84 degrees (F)
Running temp with adobe CS4, youtube, and typing this message - 103 degrees (F)
Pretty amazing if you ask me!
Before I applied the thermal paste my Macbook took at least a minute to start up with a fresh OS install, now it only takes about 15 seconds! I have not heard the fan spin up and go crazy since! And I can't even explain to you how much fast it is now!
This does prove that Random shutdown syndrome (RSS) is caused ONLY by your GPU over heating due to old thermal paste between the chips and heatsink! A design flaw by Apple? probably not because thermal paste will crack and dry over time.
This also proves that energy conversion to data in the chips can decrease because of over heating, causing the computer performance to dramatically drop!
So before you take your out-of-warranty macbook to Apple or a repair shop, see what your internal temp readings are and try to replicate the problem with over heating your CPU/GPU! This was a 10 minute fix! I am still amazed at how much faster everything is, and haven't had a random shutdown since! I hope this helps alot of people that think they are out of luck and have to pay to get it fixed!

I too have this problem as well and it has been getting worse lately, I don't know what to do anymore. Here is a little info about my macbookPro. I have the late 2008 unibody model, i bought it in late 2009 Refurbished from Apple. Recently my mac has been turning off out of nowhere. I may be doing something and all of a sudden it just shuts off, it usually happens faster when i start to open up more programs like Photoshop or Final Cut Pro. My mac is out of warranty now and i dont know how much apple is going to charge me to fix it. i mean they want 50 bucks just to talk to them on the phone (ridiculous if you ask me)!.

  • Creative Cloud for Desktop app Launch at login (solved)

I’ve had an issue with Creative Cloud for Desktop app (using Windows 8.1 Update 1 x64) – regardless of what has been set on my Preferences > General Tab > Launch at login, my app didn’t start at logon (system startup).
    I’ve tried:
uncheck the ‘Launch at login’ option (Preferences > General Tab). Restart PC. Launch the CC app, check ‘Launch at login’. Restart. Didn’t help.
uncheck the ‘Launch at login’ option (Preferences > General Tab). Restart PC. Remove the startup Key from registry stored under: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]. Restart. Launch the CC app, check ‘Launch at login’. Restart. Didn’t help.
reinstall Creative Cloud for desktop app. Didn’t help.
rename the OPM.db file (as described here: http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/apps-panel-reflect-creative-cloud.html). Didn’t help.
Finally - since the CC app is actually and x86 application - I’ve moved the startup entry from the x64 Run Key [Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run] into the common x86 [Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run].
    Simply:
    a. Remove:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
    "Adobe Creative Cloud"="\"C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Adobe\\Adobe Creative Cloud\\ACC\\Creative Cloud.exe\" --showwindow=false --onOSstartup=true"
    a. Create:
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
    "Adobe Creative Cloud"="\"C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Adobe\\Adobe Creative Cloud\\ACC\\Creative Cloud.exe\" --showwindow=false --onOSstartup=true"
And you know what? it woooorks!!! Now my app starts with windows!
I'm sharing this in case someone else has run into the same problem.
    Best Regards,
    Pawel Kuc

    64 bit Dell Laptop
    Windows 8.1 - update
    Windows Firewall
Kaspersky Anti-virus - not tried turning off but will do so and respond
All my programs have downloaded, installed and are still working (Muse, Photoshop, etc.)
Not installed any hardware since registering for Adobe, but have installed Articulate Studio 13, and also Articulate Storyline
Originally received an update for the desktop app, which failed to install
Tried repeatedly (including turning off firewall) but no luck
Uninstalled the desktop app - after following a link in one of the forums
downloaded the new desktop app - installed - perfect
Other application updates installed perfectly, including the big update for Muse to 64 bit
Most recent update for desktop app failed to install, so tried the above, removed the desktop app, but cannot now find the link to the new version to download.
Hopefully just need to find the download link to the desktop app, but travelling at present so do not get enough time to surf to locate it :-(

    Hi ,
Termination of the Forms session is based on FORMS_TIMEOUT parameter in default.env. Normally, when the FORMS_TIMEOUT kicks in , the Forms session should be disconnected, as there was no response from the Forms client for more than the time specified by Forms_Timeout .
You can set FORMS_TIMEOUT to 5 minutes for example, and close a client by shutdown to verify this.
After 5 minutes the session should be teminated
    Hope it helps

  • KDE Fails To Start / Defaults To tty1 Login [SOLVED]

Over the summer I put myself on a Linux crash course by installing Arch Linux on my HP 3105m. It went without a hitch. A month Later, I reinstalled to try out KDE, and with a little work, I got it up and running. I liked that setup so much that I have been attempting to install Arch onto my Desktop for a week now, but I can't get past the terminal. The screen flashes the terminal login screen, goes black as if X11 is starting, then returns to the terminal login. I have been scraping the forums pretty hard, and have reinstalled Arch about six times in the process. I can run

  • Auto Start-up login [SOLVED]

Hi, I like booting to the terminal with no GUI since I might turn on the computer just for doing some computation-intensive tasks but I would like to have the convenience of the login managers from Gnome/Ubuntu. I don`t know what the real name is but if you boot to the GUI in Ubuntu this login can happen automatically-no need to fill the username and password, so, how is it possible to to this auto-login in the terminal when you first start up your ArchLinux or other distro without the overhead of starting the GUI `question mark`(i don`t know why but in the openbox session or firefox my keyboard layout is different than in the terminal)
Last edited by Alberto Ferreira (2009-04-24 15:31:15)

The reason is that I don't want to execute startx right away but I don't like logging in at the terminal either. So that when I boot the pc, as soon as the booting sequence is ready the pc is ready to work .. (because I'm the only pc  user it's boring as hell to always login)
Following crouse's link didn't work for me:
All the lines in the files that the guy talks about are different than in ARCH and when I compile the program it gives the warning :"incompatible implicit declaration of build-in function "execlp"".

I've just installed asmn i've configured the cam compiled snack for sound all ok, but I can not login it just sits their saying logging in now I know its something trivial but can somebody point me in the right direction, there are no errors when I start from the comand line.

I assume you are using the latest tcl and tk version 8.5.6.
Did you recompile amsn to make snack works?
If so, you need to get the svn version.

  • Shutdown problems - solved

Just an update on a problem from last year.
The beast had an intermittent shutdown problem, sometimes freezing at the final blue screen when shutting down through the "Start" button.
The first suggestion was to run the USB DSL modem I was using through a powered hub. That didn't work.
Bonz said to ditch that modem completely and go to ethernet, which I have now done. And yes, she shuts down properly every time.
    Thanks again Bonz...

the cable modem i got supports both usb and ethernet but HOW THE HELL am i supposed to get the modem going without drivers.
my isp didnt supply any drivers so im glad it got ethernet support.
    usb requiers drivers ethernet not.

  • .bashrc not getting sourced at login [SOLVED]

Setup Arch on a laptop and added some custom stuff to ~/.bashrc but it doesn't get sourced when I ssh into the box or when I open a shell.  What am I missing?
    EDIT:  the ~/.bash_profile was empty!
    Now it contains:

This may sound like a stupid question, but in your .bashrc script, your checking for an interactive shell,  Doesn't it need to start with an if? and end with an end?
I am asking because, just suppose that the .bashrc file is being sourced like it should be, only, it is encountering that statement and quietly dieing at that point.
So, what happens if that -z line were commented out?

  • Virtualization Environment at Login [solved]

I had an interesting thought this afternoon.
What are the chances of starting X straight into Virtualbox without a real WM?
I'm thinking of a situation in which someone could log into a machine from Slim, gdm, or even using startx from a prompt and enter directly into a Virtual machine.  Those around me who have no interest in even hearing the work Linux would not need to dual boot my machine.  I feel much safer not giving that other OS access to my machine outside of a sandbox and this would ease the Linux anxiety of my spouse.
I've never heard of this being done.  Has anyone else?

  • Hibernate vs. Shutdown on Y2P

What's the benefit of shutting down vs. hibernate? I like hibernate bc it resumes fast and all my work/browser tabs are in place. Why even shutdown at all (unless when installing/uninstalling things etc)? Why not just keep using hibernate intead of shutdown?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

That should be a totally fine way of working.
I've been around long enough that I've had so may problens with various suspend and resume mechanisms over the years that I am just way more comforatble always shutting down completely. The Y2P powers up and boots to a usable state in ten seconds, less time than some past systems would take to come out of sleep, so to me it feels like it's pretty much instantaneous.
Shutting down means I'm forced to make sure that all my work is appropriately saved, and ensures that there's no cruft left over from a sleep/wake or hibernate/wake process that could be less than perfect (saving and restoring all system state is about the most demending thing you can ask of a machine in terms of complexity).
Most people these days love sleep for its instant suspend and resume wile keeping all their apps running, and if that sort of thing works for you that's great, but me I'll stick to the good old tried and true shutdown
No worries about the machine spontaneously waking up, batteries running out while sleeping and losing my work, etc.

  • NoO!!! not my beloved macbook pro.. battery/hot heat issues..

    I have a macbook PRO 17" serial w8622....
I have read about the heat/noise/battery issues wi macbooks.. but I didn't see any complains on the 17" version so i assumed we were lucky or we didn't have those issues....
I got my mine middle of July of 06'...and it worked like a charm i mean it did get "warm" but hey its a "supercomputer" right? so i didn't give it much thought PLUS i anytime it got "hot" i would sit or sit IT in front of a fan and boom after like 5 min's back to cooLneSS!!! till now!!!!
ALL of a sudden I started noticing that it got SUPERHOT in the center of the macbook like RIGHT where it says MacBook Pro on the screen....that AREA was getting crazy hot and EVEN putting it in front of a fan for an hour really didn't do much.. which was shockin to me as it always had cooled it down previously... I have been on vacation so need to travel much and so lately its been plugged in a lot..not 24/7 but alot...saturday i took it wit me for a drive and thats when my nightmare begins...
It was workin fine..jus like normal then it got down to like 73% of battery life left...NEXT thing i know is its at 20% like in 5 min's!!! then puzzlin over this quadary witt in 5min's it shuts down and won't turn back on... now i'm confused as all get out.. get it home and start chargin it back up thinkin its a fluke... get it at 100% start using it as normal then again somewhere around the 70-75% range of battery life it shuts down again.. at this point i start to panic...
I figure maybe a battery calibration will do the trick...so i go thru the procedure leave it alone for a whole day and then charge it fully before I use it.. and then it seems that did the trick...as i now watch it go (pretty quickly i must say) down from 70% thru aprox 20% which before it was jus makin the jump...everything seems fine now TILLL outta nowhere it jus shuts off.. BEFORE i could get it down to 3%, 2%, 1% before a shutdown and even then i would get some kind of warnin...but now PI YOW!!! outta nowwhere at random it'll shutdown anywhere from 10% to 33%........
I have spent now 2 days researchin this and readin the forums on here about this... and still i have not found to much usefull info on the 17" macBook Pro...
I have even tried lookin at my Full Charge Capacity and it always reads anywhere from 2234(mah) to 4987mah again for Full Charge capacity, for the macbook 15"'s i have been readin that normal is 5000mah and that there is a battery recall for that model..
D*MMIT the strangest thing jus happened as i type this....even now as i was debating whether to post about this..my battery got down to 40% and then outta nowwhere it jus shut off... now i'm gettin a bit peeved but I run quickly and plug in the charger and then i'm able to turn it back on w/o losing my stuff( i have learned if i do this VERY quickly i can sometimes bring everything back up before shutdown) so I plug in the charger and bananas if it doesn't start chargin it up at 0%!!!! when i know i had it at 40%..... and THEN the kicker as i'm typin up this very post i see it go from 4% BACK TO 40%!!!! jus like that.. there is no doubt NOW in my head there is some kind of problem....
under battery info as of right now it states:
    Full Charge Capacity (mAh) 3369
    Reaminin Capacity (mAh) 223
after a few min's and wit battery level now at 61% i checked the settings again:
    Full Charge Capacity (mAh) 4704
    Reaminin Capacity (mAh) 2864
what in sam hill's name is going on here?
PLEASE PLEASE tell me what i can do to get this working correctly....
    what are my options?
What can and should i do?
i'm VERY new to the world of mac/apple and i can say i like it alot but i'm not seein how the macheads go above and beyond to toast the virtues of apple v/s microsoft and the windows world it seems like any any product apples has its same share of issues right?
thank you all!!! i appreciate any help and feedback!!!
    oNe
p.s. after the battery calibration AGAIN like before if i sit in front of a fan the macbooK gets cooler now and the middle no longer gets hot like before which is what i personally think messed up my ish!!!

aight the PMU reset seems to have did the trick i mean now it works NORMAL as in it gets down to 3% and i'll get a warning of low reserver battery.. i.e. no random shut downs at odd percentages like before 40%, 20%..ect.. now i'm showin anywhere from 5104 to 6174 for mah for the battery... whats up wit that?
oh and tho my battery/random shutdowns seems solved now i have to now deal wit CRAZY INSANE heat from the macbook.. i mean before it got "warm" i brushed it off as its a super computer.. but now after the PMU reset it gets f*$ck'N insanely crazy hot.. it seems to center around where its labeled macbook right above the # keys.. and the underside gets so HOT NOW that its "almost" painful to the touch.. most definatly I can't rest it on my lap if i'm in shorts or boxers....
any ideas wit that? i don't want it to die on me.. that much heat can't be good? please, please... this is my first apple and i jus don't want to be dis illusioned by this whole experience..
thanks again for all the info!

  • SCCM console launch fails , SQL connectivity issue with SCCM machine account

    Hi ,
As part of resolving the corrupt SCCM 2012 R2 environment, we have uninstalled the site from the Standalone primary site and restored it from the last backup. The database is on remote server on SQL 2012 SP1. Only Site recovery is run.
Post the restoration on unable to launch the SCCM console, Error Could not connect to the site.
When I checked the logs in the log file SmsProv.log in the program filles\Microsoft Configuration manager\logs, the error is as below
*~*~e:\nts_sccm_release\sms\siteserver\sdk_provider\smsprov\sspobjectquery.cpp(6260) : SQL Connection attempt timed out~ SQL Error: [28000][18456][Microsoft][SQL Server Native Client 11.0][SQL Server]Login failed for user 'XXXX\ABBC$'.~*~*

    Hi Grath,
We ran a Site recovery, I checked the permissions on SQL server. Could not find the SCCM machine account in the SQL logins. Adding the SCCM machine account to the SQL logins solved the issue. As part of the recovery we only recovered the Site using the Site
backup. Have not touched the SQL server which is on a remote machine??
Anyways the login issue is resolved now.
    Regards
    Leela
