Shutdown Not Random

Hi All,
My macbook is on the 18th day and the most fearsome thing that i dont want to happen, did happen. The ** shutdown.
The first time it did was last friday, 25 Aug. When i was running parallels. i did not use it after a day and then i experienced it again yesterday.
so i tried replicating the shutdown and this is the result of my experiment to determine if your computer has the shutdown problem:
* operate the computer with or without the battery.
* open the terminal and run the "yes > /dev/null" (without the quotes)
* wait for 5 mins (max) and your computer will shut down.
The shutdown is activated when you noticed that the computer runs beyond the 1.5GHz mark at more than 50% cpu usage continously for a minimum of 3mins. (you can see this on the core duo monitor).
I came to this conclusion because if I run it without the battery, wherein you can only have the max 1GHz speed, the computer will not shut down even if it is using beyond 50% or even 100% of the cpu. (try running two terminals with the yes > /dev/null to run it 100%.
I also tried running it with the battery but turning it on by pressing the power button until it sound with a loud beep which makes the cpu run at 1GHz max and the result is the same. The computer will not shut down.
So, i'm sending my macbook tomorrow at the apple store here in australia. Do you think they can replace my macbook? i dont want a repair since this one is very new.
Thanks for the advice.

Hi Bocha,
I just came from Apple Broadway and had the most frustrating experience in my life. All the while I thought Apple (whether resellers or authorized dealers) have good customer service.
This one on broadway, give me the most s**t in my entire experience in dealing with companies selling goods. I traveled an hour and a half, walk to train stations for 40 mins just to get answers that is totally unacceptable for a customer who just bought a new laptop.
The store didn't even bother to ask me what's wrong with my computer. They just directed me at the back that is kinda filthy warehouse. The customer service attendant didn't even bother to check my laptop and just hand me a form that i cannot accept the conditions. Where in **** would you leave your hard earned laptop and ask you to sign that they are not liable if the laptop will be stolen in their possession? I am so disappointed and furious! I have to carry back home my laptop without any results.
I called apple and they told me to send it to another service center in Marrickville. Thanks Mark. I hope i can have a better service there.
To all you who have a macbook, try the test, "yes > /dev/null" before you end up crying when your 14 days return period is over.
IM SO DISAPPOINTED ESPECIALLY TO THAT SERVICE CENTER. I DONT KNOW HOW THEY BECAME AN APPLE RESELLER.
I love this laptop and its my first MAC. It pains me to think that its not fully operational. Sigh!

  • Photo slide show "shuffle" is not random

I have over 10,000 photos on my ipod touch and they are in multiple folders.  When I view a slide show on shuffle of my "Photo Library" (which contains all of the photos), the order is DEFINITELY not random.  Approximately 90% or more of the photos shown are all from the same folder, and the rest seem random (although even the other 10% seem skewed towards a particular folder).
It's only been happening since a recent OS update, not sure which one though.
Has anyone else noticed this?  Any way to fix it?

No one else is having this problem, or has a solution?
If the same problem happened with your music collection, it would be like having 9 songs from one artist, then 1 from another during a shuffle play.
Can someone please post the link to where I can make a suggestion/comment to Apple?  Thanks.

  • Screen saver not random

I have a album in iPhoto with thousands of photos. However, when I set the screen saver to shuffle through it, it's clearly not random with lots of repasts. Why is this and how can I make it shuffle through all the many 1000s of picts in the album?
    TIA,
    David

While this will certainly result in a new assortment of photos, it does not address the issue that "random" is not random, but is using a particular seed once, then creating a list of photos which it will follow for evermore until reset. This really isn't "random"! A "feature" I guess without resolution!

  • Large itunes library, shuffle 3G, not random loading

It was my understanding that if you plug 3G shuffle into iTunes library that is larger than size of the shuffle then the system will randomly fill the shuffle with any songs in main library until the shuffle runs out of room. When I plug my 3G shuffle (4GB) into my iTunes (library of 10,000 songs), the songs that transfer are not random. Most of the songs are from artists early in the alphabet and sometimes entire albums get transferred. I realize that statistically this could actually be random, but it seems highly unlikely. I know I could create a playlist and sync from only that, but that defeats the purpose of wanting truly random from huge library.
Is anyone familiar with this issue? Can you help? Offer advice? Thanks in advance.

    First Question:
How do I "selectively" synch music onto the ATV given I have more GB worth of data than the ATV capacity? Do I need to remove some sub folders from the iTunes directory? I would like to keep the reference data in the iTunes browser and not remove it.
You can choose which playlists get synced to the tv, use playlists to collect all the tunes you want synced.
    Second question:
I tried streaming over the weekend by reconnnecting iTunes to my PC, and the the "loading library" messge was displayed for well over 8 hours without my being able to access any photos or music. I guessed that this was because of the size of the library. Is this typical?
At 8 hours it won't be anything to do with the size of the library.
The size of a library can make a difference to the time it takes a library to load but only in terms of maybe taking a minute or longer instead of 15 seconds or so. Actually it's the size of the library database file that counts here and not the size of all the content. For example my content occupies
1.7 TB but my database is around 22 MB, I have around 10,000 tunes and 1,000 videos of one kind or another, but if your 220 GB of content is all music you may have 40,000 tunes and a database of around 80 MB.
I am connected via Linksys Powerline, hard wired ethernet over my AC lines. Synching works well this way, but I am wondering if streaming does not do so well over this type of connection.
If I'm not mistaken AC uses one of these and I don't think he has mentioned any problems with.

  • IPhoto Shuffle Slideshow not Random

When I try to make a slideshow of my entire iPhoto library on random on my iPod, I find that it is not random. Rather, it tends to use only photos from close to the date of the photo I start the slideshow on. For example, if I select a photo from March 2005, I get photos randomly from roughly the first few months of that year, but if I go to the most recent photo and start the slideshow, I tend to get only photos from the last few months. Any thoughts? I would like truly random pix from the whole library.

I had this problem after updating to iPhoto '11 v.9.2. This is how I solved it.
         1. Quit iPhoto and reopened while holding down option and command. These options appear.
         2. Selected 2 boxes: Rebuild small thumbnails and rebuild all thumbnails and clicked Rebuild. This did not solve the problem.
         3. Repeated step 1. then selected repair permissions and hit Rebuild. This solved the problem.

  • Shuffle Song is not random enough

There are 2800 songs in my ipod, I found that the Shuffle Songs function is not random enough, it always picks up the songs which I had played in last one or two days.

...Hmmm? Does iTunes take in to account what songs
the iPod has played? Therefore, will an iTines
Smartlist work for ipod shuffle playback?
If you're talking about a normal iPod, then yes. Part of the Autosync operation is to copy the last played times from the iPod into iTunes.
If you're talking about an iPod Shuffle, then no. The iPod Shuffle doesn't have a clock or a date/time, so it won't know what songs the iPod Shuffle has played recently.

  • Shutdown weirdness (not random shutdown)

Occasionally when I shut down my macbook something strange happens-the power light turns on (but doesn't pulse) when I close it after shut down. When I open it the light goes off, and the computer stays off, but has trouble turning back on, takes several pushes of the button. When it does turn back on it says that osx has quit. Any suggestions?

The lady at applecare was completely useless. She said she had "never heard of this before.....". She had me try a few things (the one thing she didn't have me do was the option-function-P-R at startup. As it turns out this forum was a better help than her). None of which worked. She finally got frustrated at me and said that she couldn't fix the problem and finished the conversation with - and I quote..."sorry you're out of luck. But good luck with that". I swear those were her words. I ended up just going into the apple store and getting the manager. I didn't have an appointment but he fit me in and the guy immediately told me he was going to replace the logic board. My buddy asked him if he was frustrated with the MB and he rolled his eyes and said no comment but they are a first generation of this particular model so he expected it.
We'll see if things are better. I gotta say I love mac (I am one of the converted PC guys) and would buy one again. I just hope they get this bloody MB thing sorted out. It is starting to feel like a root canal minus any pain killer.

  • Has anyone experienced random wake/sleep cycles? (NOT random shut down)

I bought my macbook on August 1, 2006, and previously had a problem with my it randomly shutting down. I had that fixed in December. Now I'm having the opposite problem, essentially. Whenever I put my computer to sleep, it wakes itself up, waits a few seconds, puts itself back to sleep, waits a few more seconds, wakes itself up... a constant annoying cycle. It doesn't matter if I put it to sleep by closing the lid or by choosing "sleep" from the apple menu, it still does this. I thought that perhaps one of my applications was causing my macbook to wake itself up, but this happens even when no applications are in use and I'm completely disconnected from the internet. This is driving me CRAZY because the noise of it waking itself up keeps me awake, and having to close out of all of my applications and shut down every night or whenever I want to transport it is terribly bothersome. Plus... the fact that it is waking itself from sleep can't be positive! Does anyone have any advice? I'm going to take it into the mac store but I'm super busy and wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions until then.
    Thanks!
    macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I started having an almost identical problem. I would put the computer to sleep the screen would go black and seem to shutdown for a couple of seconds. Then the CD drive would make it's noise and the computer would wake up. I reproduced it with a clean install of OSX. If I had a password set on the computer and did not enter the password the computer would go to back to sleep and then repeat the process again and again.
The first day it happened I could reproduce it every time. Now it's not so constant. I need to get the CPU to around 140 degrees Fahrenheit for a few minutes and then put the computer to sleep by typing command-option-eject.
I suspect that there is a faulty cable or sensor. Conincidentally when the problem ocurred my bluetooth also seemed to "disappear" the computer could not detect the bluetooth module. That leads me to believe that there might be two cables one that is a case-open-close sensor and a bluetooth cable sensor and that they are getting pinched.

  • Shutdown not working properly. APSCourier: : Stream error APSTCPStream

since a couple of weeks my imac won't shot down properly from time to time. in the log there are a lot of error messages of this kind: <APSCourier: 0x10011deb0>: Stream error occurred for <APSTCPStream: 0x10060c290>: Error Domain=NSPOSIXErrorDomain Code=61 UserInfo=0x10014a970 "The operation couldn’t be completed. Connection refused"
sometimes the usb keyboard and the attached logtech mouse don't work anymore either. if i attach another keyboard to the back of the imac, it works. after a hard reset the mac keyboard and mouse work again.
the third problem is, that after such hard resets, my truecrypt partition won't mount propery anymore and i get the error "hdiutil: attach failed - no mountable file systems". then again after a reboot it works fine again.
i did a check with disk utitlity which didn't find any problems. i also repaired permissions. didn't help either.
i have no idea what the cause could be. bad hardware? bad filesystem? bad os? any ideas?
here's the end of the log file:

I'm getting the same issue; my system wakes up from sleep about half an hour after I put it to sleep. The display never turns on by itself though—just the system. This has happened since the upgrade to 10.6.5. I'm running build 10H574, which I believe is the release version. The issue appears to have existed in pre-release versions, and does not seem to have been fixed in the release.
Can anyone shed some light on this issue?

  • My Windows 8.1 shutdown not working. I use BootCamp

Excuse me, I use macbook pro mid 2012,
    I use windows 8.1 64 bit
Why when I click shutdown menu, my macbook not shutting down?
    Please help..

Can you switch from Windows to OSX using Control Panel -> System -> Boot Camp? Can you switch to Windows from System Preferences -> Startup Disk -> Bootcamp -> Restart?

  • Windows 8.1 issue explorer.exe error on shutdown NOT resolved and painfully slow bootup

    Hi,
I have a brand new HP Pavilion Laptop with Windows 8 64bit. I just downloaded the free update to 8.1. And then problems started.
First off, the boot up time has almost doubled. Just before the desktop becomes visible, there is a 10 second period where all you see is a black screen. At times this is more than 10 seconds. Then the desktop wallpaper can be seen.
Secondly, the most annoying problem-, everytime I shutdown or restart , I get an explorer.exe error saying memory cant be read some instruction referenced memory at 0x00000000. ?! What the h-- is this ? I mean is this what we expect to see after updating to
Windows 8.1 ? This is ridiculous. There is no offical response from the developers either. This is affecting many people all over the world and there is not even any official patch or announcement ?
I have read similar posts here and none of the solutions work. Someone says edit the registry, someone says remove the bluetooth service from startup ?! nothing and stopping a bluetooth service should not be considered a solution. Why should I not be able
to use bluetooth just to resolve this Windows 8.1 error ??
Please fix this problem urgently. And DO NOT ask us to re-install windows... I mean come on.. You think people have nothing better to do than installing/reinstalling Windows throughout the day ?? Bandwidth does not come cheap everywhere in the world either.
Please release a patch or some guidelines on fixing this problem ASAP.

Hi, I have checked with that link on HP's site and for my product number it said that my laptop has been tested-Update your System from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1
HP has tested your Windows 8 PC with Windows 8.1 and has created update instructions.
This is what they say. And I clicked on the Windows Store Icon >> Then I clicked on the Upgrade to Windows 8.1 Tile >> Then I clicked Download Windows 8.1 Update ( over 3 GB ) waited for a couple of days >> Then clicked next a bunch of
times >> Selected some options that it asked me >> Then waited some more >> some more waiting >> and in 2 weeks I had upgraded to Windows 8.1 >> Then the above PROBLEMS started...
So, as a request to the tech team or dev team, pls fix this issue.

  • Plays in order, but not random (won't shuffle).  Shuts off in shuffle mode

My 1G (1st generation) ipod plays the songs in order, but not in (random) shuffle mode. In order mode, switching to shuffle turns the ipod off. If in shuffle mode initially, the ipod will not play at all. In shuffle mode, there's a green light on the front, initially, then it shuts off.
I believe it's a problem with the shuffle switch and/or shuffle mode exclusively.
I have reformatted, reset and done the "five R's" twice and the battery is fully charged. I've read about removing the switch in the back to clean it, but I don't want to risk breaking it. Any experience with this problem? Any experience with removing the switch?

My first Shuffle (1st Gen) slide switch began behaving erratically... it would slide past the first position and was difficult to reposition in the play-in-order position.
At the time it was 1 month old and was replaced at an Apple Store. It's been working fine for over a year.
The slider can get crud under it and can be removed carefully when in the OFF position by sliding a butter knife blade under it from the bottom. it will pop up IF the operation is done carefully. DO NOT attempt this IF your Shuffle is under warranty...

  • Shutdown not shutting down?

    Hi,
This has happened twice to me recently:
Shutdown my macbook from apple menu, wait a bit, seems to be off, Put it away in its (snug fitting) zip bag.
A while later get it out - Alarmed at the warmth of the bag, Extract macbook, hear fan spinning at max speed! , incredibly hot (almost too hot to touch!)
Fortunately it still functions OK when booted, but both times came up with the message ' Unexplained shut down - report? etc' and the battery is at 0%.
Any one had this, know what's going on?
I'm afraid that I'll accidentally fry my macbook (which I otherwise love dearly)

Yup this happens to me a lot lately. When I shut down from apple menu I wait till it completely turns off. I then close the lid. When I want to use it the next day I have trouble getting it to turn on. I plug in magsafe, and after a few tries it boots up. Battery is at 0% and the error message pops up.
I also had this happen to me: Shut down macbook, after a couple minutes the sleep light turns on. I open the lid, and after pressing the power button (or holding it down) 50 times or so, it eventually boots up.
I used to shut down using the power button, cant remember this happening to me then (not sure tho) so it may be a clue?

  • Random Questions are Not Random

The Question Pool has twenty-five (25) questions, and ten (10) Random Question slides in the project.  The frist time a learner takes the course the questions are randomly chosen, as they should be.  Assuming the learner fails and retakes the quiz, the learner is seeing the same set of questions; not a new 'random set.  Is there some setting that I am missing to give them a new random set of questions?  Thanks for any help!

Sorry, but that is the way random question slides are designed. The only way to have another set of random slides is to restart the module.

  • Screensaver random photo order is not random?

Hi - in addition to removing a lot of the screensaver options (eg in Classic Mode the "stretch to fill screen" and "keep photos centered" options) that I posted about yesterday,  I have also noticed that since my upgrade from Lion to Mountain Lion the "show photos in random order" does not work properly. What happens is that a group of photos keeps showing up over and over again in the screensaver. Every time I activate the screensaver this a different group, and it's mixed in with truly random pics, but a few keep showing up all the time - really annoying. Does anyone have a fix?
    Cheers Klaus

Hi Klaus, did you ever find a solution to this? I have exactly the same issue. Each time you start the screen saver, there's a bunch of photos that keep coming up again and again. It seems to be different everytime, but the only way to get ride of the 'stuck' ones is to restart the saver.
