Shutdown not shutting down?
Hi,
This has happened twice to me recently:
Shutdown my macbook from apple menu, wait a bit, seems to be off, Put it away in its (snug fitting) zip bag.
A while later get it out - Alarmed at the warmth of the bag, Extract macbook, hear fan spinning at max speed! , incredibly hot (almost too hot to touch!)
Fortunately it still functions OK when booted, but both times came up with the message ' Unexplained shut down - report? etc' and the battery is at 0%.
Any one had this, know what's going on?
I'm afraid that I'll accidentally fry my macbook (which I otherwise love dearly)
Yup this happens to me a lot lately. When I shut down from apple menu I wait till it completely turns off. I then close the lid. When I want to use it the next day I have trouble getting it to turn on. I plug in magsafe, and after a few tries it boots up. Battery is at 0% and the error message pops up.
I also had this happen to me: Shut down macbook, after a couple minutes the sleep light turns on. I open the lid, and after pressing the power button (or holding it down) 50 times or so, it eventually boots up.
I used to shut down using the power button, cant remember this happening to me then (not sure tho) so it may be a clue?

Hi. I recently discovered my iMac not shutting down and stalls. Everything seems to disappear except my wallpaper. If I Then go to setting on my Dock the apple sign at the top appears for me to shutdown the second time. I asked one technician’s what might be the problem. He said that maybe it is Flash Player that runs in the background and avoid the computer to shutdown. I uninstalled Flash Player and the problem was fixed. Now I can’t watch any YouTube videos. Is there something else I can do to use Flash Player again to avoid the shutdown problem?
If YouTube is your only worry, you could instruct it to use HTML5 in stead of Flash:https://www.youtube.com/html5
Be advised though that Flash is used for other web stuff too. -
MacBook Pro (10.7.3) not shutting down after updating to latest iTunes
This is a bit of a strange one, and after searching high and low, I haven't seen any other references to it, so...here goes:
I'm working on a MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2010) running OS X 10.7.3, and the complaint is this: the system will not shut down or eject a connected iPod (classic) or smartphone (Verizon Android phone) after updating to the latest version of iTunes.
I've been troubleshooting this for several days now, and I've tried the following:
1. Created a new admin account and tested from there. No change.
2. Created a backup image of the hard drive, erased & reinstalled 10.7, created temp admin account - issue resolved, but iTunes library unable to open because it was modified by a newer version of iTunes.
3. Ran software update to bring system current (as of 20 April 2012)
4. Issue reappears after software update.
5. Reinstalled 10.7.3 from Recovery partition.
6. Again, issue resolved, but unable to open iTunes library modified by newer version.
7. Update iTunes, issue returns.
I actually did several variations of the erase & install routine, as well as several admin accounts, but the basic gyst of it is that after updating iTunes, the system hangs at the spinning gear on shutdown every single time.
The version of iTunes that is reinstalled with Lion is 10.5.1. I don't know which version between that and 10.6.1 is causing the problem.
Not sure where to go from here, so I figured I'd throw it out to the community.
Thanks.Well, after throwing my hands up in the air, I returned the MacBook Pro and iPod classic to their owner because I'd held onto them for over a week trying to troubleshoot the issue with no success.
Two days later, she contacted me and told me her iPod was the culprit -- it had some bad sectors on the hard drive. I had thought to check that, but she had data on the iPod that wasn't backed up anywhere, so I back-burnered that until later.
Glad to see I'm not going insane, though. ;^) -

Hi,
recently my iMac has begun not shutting down properly. For the past week or so, I have had numerous attempts at shutting down my iMac. When I begin the shutdown process, i.e. clicking 'shut down', the iMac gets to a white screen with a rotating symbol, like the start up screen but without the Apple Logo, and goes no further. I leave it for an hour, even more and it still does not shut down. What is the problem?
ThanksI notice you're on 10.6.7. You might try upgrading to 10.6.8 and see if that helps. I'd recommend updating using the Combo updater instead of using Software Update.
You might also try starting your computer while holding Command and V. Then use it for a while, and try to shut down. Additional lines of text should be displayed, and the last few lines may give us some clues as to what's holding things up. -
MacBook Pro will not shut down
A principal at my district has a MacBook Pro 15-inch Early 2008 (2.4/2X1GB/200-5400/256VRAM/AG) running OS 10.5.8 that will not shut down. When shut down is chosen, the computer restarts instead of shutting down. It does not matter how shut down is chosen, whether it is from pull down menu, keyboard command, click on shutdown in the login menu, etc. I have tried resetting PRAM, SMC, starting up from a known good system, and run diagnostics applications (which turn up no problems). The only way to get the machine to tunr off is hold the power button down until it shuts off.
The user complains it also gets very hot when he leaves it sitting open in sleep mode. I have not observed that particular symptom. It also tend to run down the battery faster than it should (battery check shows it to have 80+% of it's original capacity.) But Activity Monitor does not show any unusual activity.
Any suggestions what I can try next to figure this thing out?
Thanks. On occassion (like tonight) my MacBook Pro will not
shut down - even when I attempt to force quit. Any
suggestions?
Happens here too, but very rarely. In my case it mostly happens late at night when OS X is supposed to run some internal maintenance jobs, maybe some of them do not allow a shutdown?
Does holding the power button down for approx. 10 seconds work? If yes, then I would not worry about it. If no, there is something seriously odd and I would report it to AppleCare.
Cheers,
Uwe -
Ok, this is a problem I've been having for a little while now. So back when I had Mavericks, sometimes (and I do stress sometimes) when I tried to shut down my iMac via the apple drop down menu in the left hand corner, nothing would happen. It would act like it was going to shut down, the little pop up box stating it will shut down in 59 seconds with the little box to check if you want to re-open your windows came up and all. But if I click the shut down button on that box, nothing happens. Usually, if I had mail open, as it was trying to shut down the "Mail" icon at the top menu bar would highlight in blue and it would just stay. I could resolve this by simply opening safari and then shut it down while in safari. Then the screen would go gray and it would shut down with no problem. NOW no matter what I do, after clicking shut down on the little prompt box window that pops up after doing as I stated before, nothing happens at all. I can open apps, etc. but not the finder. I have tried every other way of getting it to shut down but it simply will not any other way then pressing the button. I have a late 2013 iMac with the i5 processor, etc. Now, I've seen threads from others about it taking very long and to try and clear "parallels" but in my daemon folder there is nothing and in my Launch folder there are only 3. None of which were mentioned in any of the threads I've seen. In fact, right now, as I type this, I tried shutting it down about 10 mins ago and here I am still using it. So it's not a slow shutdown. It's a not shutting down at all problem. I should mention that A: I did recently delete a user who when logged into their account, had a more frequent encounter with the first problem I mentioned. And B: after turning it off from the button on the back, waiting about 30 seconds and then turning it back on, If I restart it from the menu where it asks you if which user u want, it seems to shut down fine. Anyone else having this problem?
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. -
IMac Not Shutting Down at Times???
Hey guys, I had an issue with my iMac when i bought it a year ago where it wasn't shutting down and the top menu bar would disappear after you would click shutdown. Then I would click on Safari and the top menu bar would reappear and I could then click on the apple icon to shutdown again. It would work at that point. I took it into Apple and to make a long story short they said they fixed it but when I picked it up they ended up giving me a new computer due to a whole other issue.
So that was back around June. I was still having the same shutdown issue at times with the new machine but not as much. Seemed like it would happen mostly if I quit Safari and shutdown the computer immediately after. If I wait a few extra seconds to shut down after closing Safari it seemed to not give me that problem. Sometimes it still would though.
So now I download Yosemite and now when I shutdown the same thing will happen except when I get the menu bar back and click shutdown nothing happens (the shutdown window does not come up) and I have to hold the power button down in the back to shut it off. I have had to do this about 3 times in the past week.
I have a genius bar appointment tomorrow because I can't take it anymore and I do not want to keep putting it off.
Anybody else have this issue?Sometimes the system will present a dialog identifying the app that is preventing shutdown. Wait a sufficient amount of time (a few minutes is reasonable) before forcing it to shut down. The dialog may appear, or not.
You can examine system.log to determine the reason it's not shutting down. To do that use the Console app - it's in your Mac's Utilities folder. Time and date-stamped entries immediately following the shutdown request and prior to forcing it to shut down may reveal the cause. Copy and paste them in a reply to this message if you wish. Remove or obscure any information you may consider personal (such as your Mac's name). -
For a while now, my MBP has decided it will randomly not shut down when I choose the command to do so. Menu bar, dock, and icons disappear and I get the Leopard Aurora screen. The spoked circle spins....and spins...and spins...and never goes away.
I contacted AppleCare, who had me do the usual...run the little repair program, make a new user account, do an archive and install, etc. Finally he suggested an erase and install, but I balked at that and have just been putting it to sleep 90% of the time since then. Until Friday. I did it. After installing the OS, I brought forward two setting files (one for Mail and one for iTunes) and all my documents, music, photos, and videos from TM. I reinstalled all the programs I have from scratch; got all updates.
Everything seems fine until Monday...go to shutdown, it doesn't!!! That day I had my external HD connected while working in Final Cut Studio. But I always eject before shutting down (or attempting to anyway). Tuesday, I never turned on the HD and didn't work in Final Cut. MBP shut down normally. And THAT'S the ONLY difference between the two days.
Any thoughts? Thanks for your help, community!
Edit: In reading a couple other threads on this issue, there is evidence that TM may be the culprit. Going to run a few tests and see.
Message was edited by: bpeacock22I've had the same thing happen to me with drives connected. The fact that you totally reinstalled everything, leads me to believe it may be a hardware bug.

My computer is not shutting down properly
So i bought my Macbook Pro with Retina display less than a year ago, in late 2013. it had Mac OS X. Back then, i downloaded a few dodgy softwares to try and run Windows 7 as a virtual machine. I don't remember what i downloaded, but i remember i used VMWare and one other before it i installed. Anyway, ever since back then, when ever i shut down my computer, the Finder would close and icons on the desktop would dissappear, but the dock and desktop background would remain, and not shut down. So i used to hold the power button, and then press shutdown and it would shutdown.
Now that i have upgraded to Yosemite OS, when i shutdown the computer, after the Finder goes, and the dock remains, i hold the power button and it shuts down instantly. When i turn the Macbook back on, it gives me a message that i shutdown unexpectedly and asks whether i want to re-open the applications.
There is something holding back this machine from shutting down. i tried deleting the cache, deleting the logs of VM Ware, but i still get this problem....
Can anyone help me?Sorry for the late reply, as I have been busy and avoiding this headache.
In regards to step 1, i hope this helps although i cannot quite see where the problem starts, i hope you can understand this:

In regards to step 2, I cannot find any crash reports or shutdownstall reports or any of that, but just old reports that i am sure aren't relevant to this problem.
Sorry for those long lines of report. I look forward to hearing back from you.

Operating System not shutting down
So for some reason unknown to me my Macbook Pro will not shut down, it will look like it's going to shut down and then a message will come up saying that a certain program, it changes with whatever one i have open, and will say that the finder did not quit properly if i closed everything prior to shut down. I have the console log here saying what the problem is, but its in computer lingo and i need a translator:
Oct 4 22:57:22 evan-wimberlys-macbook-pro loginwindow[25]: ERROR | WSActivateApp | SetFrontProcess({0, 1810874}) returned error -600. Unable to activate process.
Oct 4 22:57:22 evan-wimberlys-macbook-pro login[15592]: USER_PROCESS: 15592 ttys000
any help would be awesome thanksThis happened twice again since "resolving the issue" and each time I unplugged everything from the back and held the power button down for 2 minutes. 1 incident was after shutdown from Win 8 RTM (installed on a separate SSD using different boot order in BIOS) and the other incident was shutdown from Win 7. Each time I was back up and running. If that is required because of too much static build up then something isn't grounded properly inside that case, I would think.
I called HP tech support and they said to disconnect my USB printer because it draws too much power. Say what? The printer has its own power supply. Oy vey! -
Just received my new T530 Thinkpad with Win8Pro installed. All was working fine for the first few days and then I am now having issues with it not shutting down all the way. When shutdown is slected win8 logs out and shuts down. It looks to shut down properly but at the point where it would normally shut completly off the power button blinks and the fan keeps running. The wifi light is lit and so is the battery and cressent moon is bliking. It will not respond to anything unless you hold the power button down for 4 seconds and force the system to shutdown.
Could this be a win8 update issue? It did a update a day or so ago but not sure if it is directly related to that...Welcome to Lenovo Community! Unitedgreg
How about update your T530 with ThinkVantage System Update? I am unsure of Windows 8, from what I know it could be accessible in Control Panel > Lenovo - Update and Drivers.

Leopard will not shut down?
Hi,
On installing Leopard I had loads of issues so decided to do a clean install which did resolve all my issues. However, this latterly I noticed Leopard will not shut down, it runs through the process, as in the finder and any open applications disappear, then I just get winding down icon and it never turns off.
Any suggestions?a brody wrote:
It is unlikely any next update will fix this issue, because it is not an update related issue. If it were, no one here would be able to shutdown their machine.
Is this necessarily true? If Leopard shut down is hanging fora several people when Tiger did not then this strikes me as a software problem that will (hopefully) be identified, fixed, and rolled up in a future update.
I will caveat this comment though with the fact I'm new to the world of macs and very new to these forums so I don't necesarily know what I'm talking about(!) so please correct me if I'm wrong to believe this.
Let me throw my experience into the mix :
Having never had any software issues with my Mac's I upgraded to Leopard a few days ago and noticed two things:
1) When booting up it gets to the desktop and displays Macintosh HD quickly but then spins the coloured wheel (what's this called by the way?) for about 15 seconds before displaying the dock and the rest of the desktop. I have a 2.8ghz extreme iMac intel so surely should be much faster.
2) Shut down does not finish. The files/dock and everything go, but the backdrop screen remains with the egg-timer (again what is this called now it's not an egg timer)
Thanks for any tips. -
Monitor Does Not Shut Down In 15 Minutes
Under power options the monitor is set to turn off on 15 minutes. updated my Shockwave Flash to 10.0 r42 when a flash video is played in any of of my browser and the browser is shut down the monitor does not shut down in 15 minutes. the computer has to be rebooted and then everything is fine. reinstalled Shockwave Flash 9.0 r124 for firefox opera and the situation is ok.
can not understand why the new flash causes this problem.
computer exceeds all of adobe requirements.
if a monitor does not shutdown in power schemes it usually indicates a process running in the bachground.
In this case there appears to be none and it would suggest there is a problem with Shockwave Flash 10.0 r42 and possibly with all shockwave
player 10 have that problem.
Last year tried another version of 10 and had the same problem
install_flash_player_ax.exe 9.0 r124 will not install on my computer as a pop up says its not the most current version.
install_flash_player_9_ax.exe 9.0.260.0 will install but on most sites a pop up will say flash 10 is required.
Dont know what adobe is up to but clearly something is wrong.
Many people have heard about third-party cookies, and some browsers even block those by default. Some people may even be using Private Browsing modes. However, only few seem to realise that Adobe's Flash player also leaves a cross-browser trail on your local hard drive, and allows for sending cookie-like information back to the server, including third-party sites. And because it is a plugin, Flash does not take any of the browser's privacy settings into account.
http://superuser.com/questions/1627/how-to-automatically-remove-flash-history-privacy-trai l-or-stop-flash-from-stori
Its surprising that no one has noticed this bug and also would like a working copy of install_flash_player_ax.exe 9.0 r124
Any comments would be appreciated.filed a bug report with adobe.
the attachment will explain it.
the problem has been fixed in a future beta 10. -
