Shutdown vs Sleep
All,
I've had my macbook for about 2 weeks now, and I'm wondering which is better, shutdown or sleep. Specifically, I take my macbook to work everyday, and worry that if I don't completely shut it down, the hard disk may be damaged in transit.
When it's going to stay at home, I just close the lid and put it to sleep.
Thanks,
Tom Wojeck
I shut mine down too, but in theory you should be able to carry it around without damage while in sleep mode.
The hard drive heads geet parked in the testing position so they will not clatter up against the drive platters themselves which would be the major cause of problems you might run into. Otherwise, there are no other parts that would be moving around.
I would be afraid of something waking my Mac, putting those read heads back in position. If I moved the wrong way, my data would be bye-bye.

My computer won't shutdown and sleep
I'm using Windows 8.1 Pro x64 and my computer won't shutdown and sleep. When i try to shutdown pc, everything shutsdown (hdd etc.) but only fans and led's stay on. I have to press power button to shut it down. Even i try to sleep the pc everything shutsdown
but fans and stuff is still on i have to press power button to completely turn it off. I tried to write powercfg -energy code to command prompt and i got 8 errors and 7 warnings. How to solve that problem?
This is what i got:

Satellite C850 won't shutdown or sleep
Hi
I have Toshiba satellite C850-B717 since 6 month that came with WIN 8 and it worked without problems
but now did not shutdown or sleep
when i shutdown it , the fan remain running and the power led remain on and i can't turn it off until i hold down the power button for 5 seconds
the sleep mode is the same problem and cant wakeup

anyone can help me please?
i think the problem is hardware or bios problem not software problem because the same problem happen when i enter the bios, change anything and i choose save and exit , it freezes and then restart , even when i push the power button it freeze
i tried several methods but nothing work
Update the BIOS to 6.70 , it was 6.60 when the problem begun
I recovered the OS from TOSHIBA recovery flash thet I made before
I removed the battery and hold down the power button for 30 seconds
I removed the battery for about 11 hours
tried booting from winpe and its wont shutdown at all ,just freezing
any HELP please
"sorry about my english"
THANKS> same problem happen when i enter the bios,
If this happens within the BIOS, then this problem is related to the hardware malfunction.

I agree with the others. In your case, better shut it down for saving energy.
"Which one is better? What is the difference?":
- Sleep allows to very quickly resume any task that was running. Leave all applications, documents etc open, they'll just be here at the same place, in the same state, as when you left your computer.
It's just a matter of quickly going back to work, not having to retype some websites login passwords for example, etc.
- On the wear and tear point of view, the difference is so small, your Mini will be obsolete and replaced with a newer Mac, far before something breaks down just because of to many cold boots!
Yes, the most demanding task for a computer's hardware (and probably OS too), is a cold boot.
Sleep, instead of Shutdown, keeps your computer components from a lot of temperature fluctuations, and the hard disk too just spins down, instead of completely setting itself down, then up again from scratch (and cold).
Again,
these differences exist, but they are not so important that you would take them into account and change your energy saving habits.
- Macs are well designed to cope with many different kinds of users/usages.
"About running yourself the nightly automatic maintenance":
In case you didn't know already about this: yes, just open Terminal and paste this command
sudo periodic daily weekly monthly
once or twice a month.
In order to make sure all three maintenance tasks run until the end, after you entered your admin password and hit Return, just leave Terminal open like 15 minutes or so (until you see its prompt again).
There is no hurry to quit it, as the maintenance runs in the background: Just use your computer in the meanwhile.
Enjoy your Mac!

Macbook PRO Retina 15" shutdown after sleep
Hi,
I have a new mackbook pro retina 15".
When I close the lid the macbook goes on sleep mode.
But, even when it is supplied by AC it shutdown after a couple of our and if I reopen the lid it restart.
For example Chrome restart saying that it has been closed not in correct way. How can I avoid the automatic shut down? This has happened to me (system restarts when waking from sleep) and I have read about it happening to others. It is never quite clear if we are encountering the same problem. For me, the problem only occurs occasionally, and intermittently, and it only happens when the computer has slept long enough to enter its hibernation state, so it is hard to troubleshoot.
This behavior started with Mavericks. I am not sure if it is caused by some incompatible third party software or some weakness in Mavericks. Usually, it's the former. One thing I tried as a sort of general, blanket troubleshooting step is reset the NVRAM and Reset the System Management Controller. This problem has not re-occured since those steps. This proves nothing, of course. But it is harmless to try it. -
Restart, Shutdown, And Sleep do not work on my Mac Book Pro.
When I click the Apple in the top left corner of my screen, and click Sleep, Restart, or Shutdown, none of them work.
Since my computer cant restart, I can't restart my computer to install updates either, which is frustrating to say the least.
Computer Specs:
Mac Book Pro (Same as every 2011 MBP, only thing I've changed is 4->8 RAM)
13-inch, Early 2011
2.3GHz Intel Core i5
8gb 1333MHz DDR3 Ram
Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB
OS X 10.9 (13A603), Mavericks.
If there's any more information that would be helpful let me know and I'l try to provide it. Thanks to whoever can solve the issue.Try each but not both at the same time:
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
Create a new admin user account. Restart the computer and log into the new account. Try Sleep, Restart, and Shutdown. Do they all work?
Restart the computer is Safe Mode. Can you Sleep, Restart, and Shutdown when in safe mode? -
There doesn't seem to be a discussion section for this product, so here goes...
I've been trying out the HP ElitePad 900 from a local vendor for possible use in our environment. I work for the resident IT shop as a Network Engineer and while I was testing out the product, I ran into an interesting bug. Seem that the products wireless card (the Qualcomm Atheros AR6004 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi Adapter), when the Power Management of this device is set to not "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power", it will not shutdown completely, it will not reboot and it will not go to sleep.
Rebooting with the wireless card's set in this manner causes a BSOD (or whatever they're calling it for Windows 8). The error says that there was a power state error.
If you let it go to sleep, the devices does not respond.
Shutting down, the device hangs at shutdown, preventing it from fully shutting down.
None of my other devices running Windows 8 have this problem.
The driver version is 3.7.0.206.
Again, I'm just testing this product. I will not be able to further troubleshoot the device. I'll leave that up to the support people to work this out.Hey Guys,
I discovered the same problems with my Elitepad. However, I installed the following update and it seems that at least the stand-by problems are solved:

Problem: Within days of building computer in January the computer started to automatically reboot seconds after shutdown or entering sleep mode.
Attempted Fixes:
-Total re-install of Windows + BIOS
-Updated BIOS via LiveUpdate
-Rolled back to initial BIOS that came with MB
-Changed between registry option of "PowerdownAfterShutdown" between "0" and "1"
-Disabled Wake-Up Events in BIOS
-Changed to OS controlled Wake-Up events
-Changed "Restore after AC Power Loss" to off in BIOS
-Ordered a new PSU, replaced PSU
Regardless the fix, if I try to shutdown - the computer reboots within a few seconds. If I try to put it in sleep mode, it boots right back up. The only way to get the computer to shut off is by manually turning off the PSU.
I've seen that there have been frequent power-cycle issues with this particular motherboard in comments on newegg.com, just wondering if this issue has been encountered and if there is a fix available?Quote from: Bernhard on 17-February-12, 00:10:35
Is this with no case wire connections to any of the headers? i.e. if you start it by shorting the on/off pin headers with a screwdriver tip.
Yeah, as shown here.
http://www.computer-how-to-guide.com/motherboard-troubleshooting/motherboard-post-test-how-to/
Shorted on with flathead, boots up fine. After flipping off the PSU to turn it off and then flipping the PSU back on, the dang thing waits a few seconds and boots right back up. No short required. At this point I think a ghost might be living in my computer. -
Why T400 always randomly hangs when restart, shutdown and sleep??
I'm a student. I used to open a lot of pdf, website, word. I need to spend a lot of time to adjust those software. so, generally, I just use the sleep mode. when I left the T400 a moment, the laptop will switch to the sleep mode. but I found the laptop usually hangs. I have to press the power button to shutdown it and lost all of working. It happend many times. which upset me. I have google a lot of website, but nothing is usefull---update driver, OS,active the security chip, anything.... which also happened randomly, sometimes it's stable, sometimes it happened 2 times during one hours..
.anybody can help me??? thanks.
The OS is vista 32. update all drivers and hotfix.

Also, Try using Disk Utility to repair your startup disk (hard drive) as shown in Dr.Smokes Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption.

Log In Items on iiMac: Shutdown or Sleep:
Under accounts---log-in items. Can I just delete those so they don't automatically start up?
When I shut down..do I need to QUIT each program running?
Should I just shut down every night? Or leave it running? Or sleep.
I am new to the iMac, and want to make sure I get these little details right. Thanks!Brinke wrote:

Yes, but some programs, like iTunes, have background apps that run to monitor your system, like inserting a cd, etc. If you delete them, you'll lose that funtionality, so be carefull what you delete.
When I shut down..do I need to QUIT each program running?
If you have any unsaved documents, and you shut down without saving, you will be prompted by each program to save your document. Otherwise, shutdown will try to quit your programs. Some programs may not behave, however. If you find any that don't, you'll have to quit them before shutdown.
Should I just shut down every night? Or leave it running? Or sleep.
That's up to you. I have left mine on for days at a time with no ill effects. If you won't be using it for a few days, it's probably a good idea to shut down. Also, if your computer is turned off every night and never allowed to run it's maintenance scripts, it could eventually lead to performance issues.

Why does my mac mini shutdown during sleep mode?
After I put the Mini into sleep mode, it shuts itself off after a few hours. I tried resetting the SMC per instructions from another forum post (turn the Mini off; pull the power cord for 10 seconds; plug back in; wait 5 seconds; turn the Mini back on) but that didn't work. Anything else I can try?
Thanks,
iBob52I have the same problem. When only the screen is sleeping, everything is ok. When the MacMini begins to sleep, he just shuts off. Help someone ?

This is quite frustrating. Since I upgraded (did not clean install), whenever I manually sleep or shutdown, it immediately unsleeps or boots after 2 seconds.
I've been searching for posts of similar problems but most seem to be complain about an inability to time sleep their laptops. My computer won't stay asleep or shutdown regardless of how I do it.
I checked the console to see what was occurring when it was awakening and here is the message:
[0X0-0xe00e].com.elgato.eyetvhelper[115] *wakein:106 entries in power event schedule table
Then a repetition of the elgato.eyetv.helper for 100 more lines
I Deleted Elgato a while ago. I can't find this "helper" file anywhere.
Anybody have any suggestions. Perhaps a way I can make sure I've deleted everything related to elgato.
Thank you.Has there been any further information on what makes SL Restart after a ShutDown has been attempted? This is happening to me every time I go through the ShutDown routine. I have to manually shut my Mini down with the power button each time.
I do NOT have Elgato software on my computer. -
Shutdown, Restart, Sleep best method for looking after everything?
I'm just wondering what Apples stance is on actually shutting down, starting up putting to sleep etc and its effect on the hardware?
I'm sure i read a while ago that just having it a sleep was the best bet as it keeps the battery ticking over, doesn't have any cold starts which are bad for hardware etc etc....
Daily i use all day sleep at night and then do a quick re-start in the morning.
Or should only restart when needed?
So what do Apple say on this, any write ups about it?
ThanksNever turning the MBP off or allowing it to sleep or hibernate definitely does increase wear on some of its components, notably the hard drive.
In normal sleep, my 15" MBP draws one watt of power (and the AC adapter draws another watt). In hibernation, the computer draws no power at all (it is completely off), and the adapter continues to draw one watt. There is no significant wear and tear on any part of the computer in either mode.
My MBP sleeps whenever I'm not using it. I only shut it down when I'm replacing hardware or (rarely) carrying out a test in order to respond to a question here. It hasn't been shut down for more than a total of about 8 hours in the 23 months I've owned it. The same was true of the five previous Apple notebooks that have been my primary computers for 17 years. They have all traveled everywhere with me, always in sleep mode (the computers, not me). -

External hard drive "improper eject" after shutdown or sleeping
I have a 27", late 2012 iMac running OS X 10.8.3. I just changed my Time Machine external disk from a LaCie D2 (Lightning to Firewire 800 adaptor) to a larger Fantom GForce/3 (USB 3 directly into iMac. Not a hub.) No problems with the LaCie, it was just too small. The Fantom drive is working fine as my Time Machine, BUT...every time the iMac sleeps or is shut down, when restarted it show the incorrectly ejected warning and the drive is gone from my desktop and disk utility app. The drive is still on, but I have to turn it off and back on to have it reappear. If I eject the drive before it sleeps or is shut down, it reappers on startup as it should. I see on some forums that users have been having this problem with some drives since at least 2009. I find it hard to believe that Apple and the hard drive suppliers haven't solved this problem. I don't think I did anything wrong in reformatting the drive. There was no new driver or software with this drive. I did notice that the format is listed in the drive info as "Mac OS Extended (Case Sensitive, Journaled)". I never noticed the "Case Sensitive" before this. Is this a problem? Ejecting the drive before the machine sleeps is a pain, hard to remember and shouldn't be neccessary. I sure could use some help.
The next thing I would Suggest trying is a Safe Restart. This will clear some caches, it is possible one or more is corrupt. To restart in Safe Mode hold down the Shift key when you hear the startup tone until you see a progress bar appear. Let the machine fully boot then restart normally and test.
If that does not do it there are more things to try. Next would be creating another user account (call it TEST) and log into that acct. if the problem disappears the. You know it's a software issue related to your user account.
