Shuts down after ~10 mins running on battery

For a year, my MacBook Pro ran fine. At the beginning of the previous school year (around September of '07), my notebook began to shut off before the battery was fully drained. Gradually it began to shut off sooner and sooner, until it finally shuts down not even ten minutes after unplugging it. The battery is only at around 90% when it kicks the bucket. When I try to turn it back on, the computer makes a noise as if it is going to turn on, but quickly drops dead again. Plugging it back into the power remedies this and runs normally, but what's the point in having a notebook if I can't work on it unplugged...?
Anyways, while at college I took my computer to the IT desk. Replacing the battery once didn't help, so we tried another battery... we must have done this four times with no avail. They decided to send my Macbook Pro to Apple and after a few weeks I got it back. For a few days it worked fine while running on the battery, but then it started malfunctioning again until I got back to square one. I didn't take it back to IT because I desperately needed my computer to work on assignments.
Here's my current power information, thanks to System Profiler:

Please help, this problem is very annoying.

There are several things you can do I understand.
1) Check the battery condition using a program like the widget iStatPro (free). If the battery health is less than 80% then Apple have a free replacement program for this.
2) Switch the machine off and disconnect the power supply. Remove the battery and leave out for several minutes - to allow complete discharge of all electronic components, I think. Then re-instal the battery, etc and restart. I'm not 100% clear on all steps in this procedure but it provides a reset which sometimes resolves problems at least temporarily.
3) Disconnect all peripherals and see how it works. One of these might be calling for more power than it should.

    Hi
In my opinion the overheating is the problem. First you can try is to clean up the unit properly. I presume that CPU and graphic card runs very intensive and produce a lot of warmness. If the hardware can not be cooled properly the notebook shuts down suddenly.
    Clean it up.

  • Macbook Air 11" shuts down after few minutes running

My Macbook Air 11" from mid 2012 shuts down after few minutes running, it is a laptop with very light use. The first time this happen was trying to upgrade to OS X Mavericks, after this I read it was maybe an overheating and definitely the case was hot, after this I placed the computer right in front the AC to finish the upgrade, finally I successfully upgrade the OS but the problem continue. I bring my Mac to service and now they said it is a Video Card problem, it doesn't make to much sense for me. Can somebody let me know if this could be a Video Card problem?

At what point is the shutdown occuring? As soon as you launch the install app?
If so, I would trash the install app file, and re-download it.
First, you might try running a Repair Permissions & a Verify Disk from the Recovery Partition. It is always a good idea to do this before any major software update/upgrade.

    Hi
Believe me; its not easy to say exactly why the BSOD appears.
Generally it happens because of the serious software malfunction or hardware fault.
Did you use the OS from the Toshiba image?
There message says something about sysaudio.sys.
This file is a system audio WDM filter process and its a part of Windows OS. It controls the hardware like printer or graphic card on a lower level.
Note: The virus uses such files as a camouflage. You should use always a anti virus application.
Furthermore you have suggested that the notebook shuts down after 5 min.
Well, this sounds like a overheating issue. How did you use the notebook? You should know that the free space around the notebook is very important because of the air circulation. The ventilators should be also free.
I you use the notebook in the right position and this will happen again so I would recommend asking the Toshiba service partner for the help. They should check the notebook.

  • Satellite A10 shuts down after 40 mins

A-10 Pro keeps shutting down after 40 mins, power source is always the AC lead, can anyone help?
Has been checked for the following:-
    Viruses
Power managment - on never shut down
Cooling fan seems to be okay

    Hi guys
The compressed air spray is a nice tool to clean the internal cooling ventilators!
Usually the dust and debris prevent the fans from properly rotation and therefore the temperature increases and leads to the overheating issues
Use simply such spray and you will solve this!
    bye

  • Satellite A30-921 shuts down after 10 mins

I own a Satellite A30-921 but it shuts down after 10 mins.
I've tried to alter the toshiba power management settings but they wont work any ideas ?

Does the notebook shut down automatically without showing any error messages?
This could be caused by an overheating issue!
How old is your notebook and did you clean the cooling ventilators in the past?
If not I would recommend doing this.
To clean the ventilators you could use the compressed air spray which can be purchased in most computer stores.
The problem is that the dust and debris inside the notebook prevents the cooling modules from properly working and therefore the temperature increases to the higher level. This leads to the automatically shuts downs.
In my opinion the fans cleaning could helps to solve this issue.
    Bye

  • When running on battery power, my MBP shuts down after 30 mins..please help

this has been happening for the last two weeks; whenever i run my MBP on battery, it goes blank/shuts down after about 30 mins...would start back on, but shut down even before the login screen comes! i checked the battery display under the laptop-it showed 3 green lights!! TIA!! i bought my MBP off the apple website last september!

With your symptoms, most likely, yes. If you have a 17" MBP, you are out of spec (based on Apple's specification of 80% health for 300 cycles). If you have a 15" MBP, you're in spec (84% health), but your symptoms indicate a problem (i.e. a defective battery). So, contact AppleCare!
You can't calibrate now. I asked because if a battery goes too long (150-220 cycles) without calibration, the "sudden loss of power" can result.
    Hope this helps...
Graham, that's why I inquired about calibration, but with the OP's cycle count, that's not the issue. Also, FYI the "battery condition" information is part of System Profiler with Leopard; the OP lists Tiger, and did post all the information available under Tiger.

  • My apple streamer keeps on shutting down after 20 mins iv changed the energy saver etc it still does it any help

my apple streamer continues to shut off after 20 mins, Iv vhanged my energy saver and displays, any help

    Just to be clear;
Does it only shut down after twenty minutes when your Apple TV is streaming from the computer, or does it shut down after twenty minutes under any circumstances.
When you say shut down, do you mean the computer shuts down, goes to sleep or crashes.

  • G5 w/New VeloRaptor  and WD 1TB drives shut down after 5 min. of inactivity

We partitioned the VelociRaptor and got it up and running yesterday. Loaded all the programs into it and installed a new WD terabyte scratch disk that holds documents. By yesterday afternoon the computer wowed up with its extremely fast performance.
This morning I booted up all the computers in the office prior to staff arrival. The designer found her G5 with blank screens and fans racing. We (hard) shut it down waited a bit and it rebooted instantly after startup. She went to work and the computer operated perfectly. A phone call interrupted her work, and while she was talking the screens went black and the fans started racing.
We (hard) shut down again, waited and started it. I reset the PRAM. Everything back to normal. Again during a period of inactivity the screens blackened and the fans raced.
How do we reset the NRAM?

  • Macbook Pro Shuts Down after 30 mins. When Watching a Movie through TV

Why does my new Macbook Pro shutdown whenever we try to stream a DVD from the computer to our TV? Both products are new. I changed the energy settings and it still shuts down about a half hour into the DVD. It's so annoying! Please help.

Mine goes off after a while of playing my iMac's music thru wi-fi onto the apple TV to have my music played on my Bose solo. A few weeks ago it happened also if I was playing my music from my iPad thru the apple TV. I've been doing this for years and it never happened before. Someone suggested a few weeks ago that possibly my Apple TV was connecting to my wi-fi in a faulty way. I have noticed that if I check my iMacs wi-fi settings and I remove wi-fi my apple devices have had connected to in the past are listed there. I have removed them manually and unchecked the "remember wi-fis  this computer has joined" box but they will reappear there a moment later. Is my apple TV effective? or my wi-fi's settings? Help please!

  • IMac shuts down after removing Mini DisplayPort to SVGA

    Hi,
The last couple of years I have worked with a 27 inch iMac in combination with a HP 27 inch monitor. This monitor is connected via a Mini Displayport to SVGA connector. Because I am going to use this external monitor anymore, I disconnected it today which made my iMac shut down imediately. Then it keeps rebooting and trying to start up but shuts down again. Over and over.
The problem stops as soon as I connect the monitor again.
    Anybody have any thoughts?

  • MBP shuts down without warning when running on battery

I've had my MBP for over a year but rarely used it on battery power. Lately I have been doing so and find that as the battery gets low (I'm not sure how low) the MBP just shuts itself down without warning. No "low battery" message, nothing—just shut down and total loss of unsaved data. I checked the support page about the battery recall, and it doesn't describe this problem, so I am not eligible.
I installed Leopard (fresh format and install) just before this started happening, but I can't be sure it has anything to do with it since I didn't use to use the MBP on battery before.
Is there anything that can be done about this?
    TIA

    Good morning,
You may wish to perform a reset of your SMC and see if that helps. You can find the instructions on how to perform this in [Apple Support Document 303319 : Resetting MacBook and MacBook Pro System Management Controller (SMC)|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303319|Resetting MacBook and MacBook Pro System Management Controller (SMC)].
