Shuts down after sleep, won't start up

I've got what sounds like a common problem with my just-purchased iBook---it shut down at some point last night in sleep mode, and won't start back up. Of course, I disconnected everything but the power supply before attempting to start up, but to no avail.
I read in another thread that removing the battery, then immediately replacing it, seems to help some folks. I'll try that next. Failing that, what should I try next?
Any ideas greatly appreciated!

Sam,
This has happened once to my wife's iBook.
I fixed it by resetting the PRAM, as suggested by a very helpful Apple Tech. person:
1. Shut down the computer.
2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
3. Turn on the computer.
4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
6. Release the keys.
Your computer's PRAM and the NVRAM are reset to the default values. The clock settings may be reset to a default date on some models.

If this has happened more than once the problem is likely on your PC.

    Hi
Believe me; its not easy to say exactly why the BSOD appears.
Generally it happens because of the serious software malfunction or hardware fault.
Did you use the OS from the Toshiba image?
There message says something about sysaudio.sys.
This file is a system audio WDM filter process and its a part of Windows OS. It controls the hardware like printer or graphic card on a lower level.
Note: The virus uses such files as a camouflage. You should use always a anti virus application.
Furthermore you have suggested that the notebook shuts down after 5 min.
Well, this sounds like a overheating issue. How did you use the notebook? You should know that the free space around the notebook is very important because of the air circulation. The ventilators should be also free.
I you use the notebook in the right position and this will happen again so I would recommend asking the Toshiba service partner for the help. They should check the notebook.

When I remove the battery charger the computer completely shuts down and won't start up without the battery charger. I have to restart all my windows when I turn it back on. Before it would just go to sleep and if it was charged it would come back on without batter. Any suggestions on what this can be?

  • Help please - occasional shut-down after sleep & kernel panic

    Hi all.
I have an intermittent problem here with an iMac 24in 2.66Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo model. This iMac was bought refurbished from the Apple store about 6 weeks ago.
About once a week, after putting the iMac to sleep, I come back to it later to find it has shut down. The only way to restart is to unplug from the wall and then plug in and switch on as normal.
This has happened on three occasions in the last couple of weeks, and by looking in System/Library/Logs/Diagnostic Reports I found what looks like a record of a kernel panic:

Since this last one I have reset the PRAM/NVRAM and updated to OS X 10.6.2. Is this likely to help or is there a more fundamental problem here?
Thanks for any help on this.

    HI,
    "AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement-"
First, try resetting the SMC. (System Management Controller)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543
Considering this iMac is well within the one year limited warranty, I'd take it back if resetting the SMC does not work. You should not have to trouble shoot kernel panics whether it's refurbished or not but read here for help to resolve kernel panics... something might help.
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html
If you have installed any 3rd party software / hardware, uninstall and try using the iMac to see if it's stable.

  • MBP shuts down after sleep when 2% battery left

Sorry guys if u find it irritating to see the similar question again n again but i couldnt stop myself from asking this...
i have my mbp just 3 weeks old and i tried to callibrate the battery just few hrs ago...i continuously used my mbp until the battery level reached to 2% (the warning message showed when it was 6%)...just then i had to received a phone call. When i was busy talking, i noticed that the mbp has gone to sleep mode...but when i returned (2-3 mins later), i found it shut down...
well, i think it should have remained to sleep mode but it didnt...then after an hour i connected the power cord and switched on and noticed a progress bar which i saw for the first time....i have been charging it for 40-50 mins, now...
also the health of my battery keeps fluctuating between 95-100 %...istat shows this...is this normal???
So what i want to know is, Is this normal for mbp to shut down when the battery reach that low?? OR there is some problem in my MBP???
if there is should i be going to my mbp reseller shop for service or it is something i can handle myself????
    thanks in advance..

then how am i supposed to callibrate if it shuts down before completely draining the battery???
and what about the battery health % being fluctuating? my battery have completed only 9 cycles and the health shown at the moment is 97%

  • Laptop shuts down after sleep mode, help please!

When I close the lid or press the sleep mode button, my laptop goes into sleep mode and everything is ok. However, when I open the lid or press the power button to awake it... after a few seconds, my laptop shuts down! I just formatted my laptop to the factory settings hoping to fix the issue, but it persists. Please help!

When any problem persists after recovering to factory settings, it's often indicative of a hardware problem.

  • Macbook Pro intermediately shuts down after sleep

I've looked all over the forums before posting this so I'm sorry if this is a repeated post!
This doesn't happen all the time but sometimes after I wake my Macbook Pro from sleep (lid down) I open the lid back up and it'll completely shut down. This happens intermittently like I say, but will happen if it has been asleep over night (8 hours) or under an hour. Sometimes it behaves just fine and as it should.
I am a bit of a computer novice so if you could speak in lehmans terms that'll be greatly appreciated!

Oh dear. Often works but not always.
Macbooks are set by default to hibernate rather than go into ordinary sleep and this may cause waking problems.

  • Help! My System shuts down after one minute of starting the PC

    Help
I have just finished assembling my PC using the MSI PM8M3 – V motherboard with a P4 (LGA775 – 630) 3.0 GHz processor and 500w power supply. After assembling all the parts, when I start the computer within 30 or 40 seconds the computer automatically switches off. Is there any way to know what's wrong and solve it?
    Thanks

    Hi
Sorry about that since i am new to this forum and i am not sure how to create a sig line. Anyway below are the details of my power supply
    OMNI PS ATX 500w
    +3.3v - 30A
    +5v - 50A
    +12v - 25A
    -5v - 0.3A
    -12v - 0.8A
    +5VSB - 2.0A
I tried starting the computer without my hard disk, and my CD RW and using only:
    CPU
    CPU fan
    Motherboard
    2 system fans
    DDR RAM (512MB)
And it stll did not work.
When i start the PC, the system loads properly so i am able to access the BIOS but then then the system only stays on for like 30 or 40 seconds and it just goes off without making any sounds or showing and warning signals.
I tried using a diffrent 500w power supply but it still did not work!
If you need any info, please do ask and also, i'm not exactly sure on whats a D-bracket.
    Thanks

  • My Mac 10.7.5 won't shut down after new software (security update 2013-003) installation-- hangs at grey screen with "software update" at top.  It also intermittently goes to sleep without my asking.  What to do?

My Mac 10.7.5 won't shut down after a new software installation (Security Update 2013-003).  It just hangs at a grey screen with "Software Update" at the top.  I have to force quit, then restart-- but the new software hasn't installed.
My Mac also intermittently goes into Sleep mode, repeatedly, unprompted by me.  I suspect a connection between these two problems.
I have tried deleting the /Library/Updates folder.  It hasn't helped.  The update still won't install, and my Mac won't shut down without my forcing the quit.
    Help please!

Hi, I've just come accross the same problem... did you manage to get a resolution??
    Cheers, Chris.

  • MacBook shuts down after 2s of sleep

I've run out of ideas of how to fix a problem that started on the weekend.
    It's an early 2009 2GHz MacBook running 10.6.7 with 5GB of ram.
The problem is that the laptop shuts down about 2 seconds after it goes to sleep.
Initially it was also shutting down after a minute of being left idle but that behaviour has stopped since I repaired the hard disk last night. It does however now beep (even if muted) and display the shutdown dialogue box after being left idle for a couple of minutes (it continues to give a prompt beep every couple of minutes, again even if muted).
Once shut down it won't respond to the power button unless I have disconnected both the power charger and battery for a few seconds. It will then restart from either the battery or power charger.
The shut down problem is the same with or without the battery onboard. Battery count is 163 and condition is reported as "normal" in Profiler.
I've tried starting from a fresh OS X install of both 10.6 and 10.5.6 on a USB drive but it still shuts down on sleep.
I've reset SMC, repaired permissions, repaired the disc (there were some errors that were repaired) and now run out of things to try.
The system.log shows the following when it shutdowns down while sleeping:
May 30 20:50:52 loginwindow[41]: loginwindow SleepWakeCallback WILL sleep
    May 30 20:50:54 configd[14]: PMConnection mDNSResponder com.apple.powermanagement.applicationresponse.slowresponse 2047 ms
    Any ideas?

If I recall correctly, MacBooks go into a mode of sleep called Hibernate by default.  In this mode, the contents of the memory are saved to disk when the sleep starts.  You can tell if this is happening by looking at the light on the front.  If it stays fully on for 10 seconds or so then the computer is hibernating, otherwise it is just asleep.
Anyway, to stop rambling - maybe you should try toggling between normal sleep and hibernate to see if that makes any difference.  Follow the instructions on this page:

  • IMac (3.4gHz Intel Core i7) shuts down when sleeps, then won't restart

Just bought a brand new 27" iMac (3.4gHz Intel Core i7) which shuts down when sleeps, then won't restart (ie completely dead).
In order to restart, I have to unplug the power cord from the computer, hold power key down for 10secs, replug in and it then starts up. I returned to the store and they spent a couple days letting it go to sleep etc and overnight and for them it was fine. Woke up no problems. They returned it to me yesterday.
So I set it all up again, left it overnight and this morning it was dead again. So now it leaves me to wonder if it's something I have plugged into it.
I have a new Seagate 3TB external hard drive hooked up using USB3.0. This is plugged directly into the back of the computer.
I also have a powered USB hub plugged into the computer which has regular USB stuff such as printer, graphics tablet and another external hard drive (this one is older LaCie 500gb, and have put it into a new USB 3.0 case as well for the arrival of the new iMac (this had an old firewire hard drive case). However this hard drive is switched off at the case and is not being used.
I believe it could possibly be the Seagate 3TB disk causing this problem, but it works fine during the day while I am using the computer, it's just when I either leave it at lunch time to go to a meeting or walk etc or overnight that I come back and it has shut down....leaving me to believe that it's due to the computer going to sleep.
Has anyone else had a similar problem with a Seagate drive? Today I'm conducting an experiment and heading off for lunch with both hard drives unhooked. If I come back and the computer wakes up from a click of the mouse or keyboard as it should, I will plug in one hard drive at a time and re-test. I will leave the Seagate for last, as I don't think it is the old LaCie disk (which is off).
For reference sake, I also have a NAS running off my network through Airport Extreme etc and have my old iMac hooked up to the network too, but don't believe this is the problem.
Initially I did put in some after market RAM (another 8GB) and though that might be the problem, but I removed and it still reacted the same way (plus store I bought it from again booted up fine and woke up fine at their shop after I had taken RAM out too).
Will keep this post updated with my next test (letting computer sleep without either hard drive in), but keen to hear if anyone has had any similar experiences with Seagate disks/cases and the new iMacs.
    Cheers,
    Kristin

    Hey kristinandmike,
I had a similar problem shortly after I bought my 27" iMac. Here is an excerpt from my discussion:
"As BDAqua suggested, I started the process of elimination by shutting down the externals and just leaving up one of the USB drives and using the computer until time to shut it off. After eliminating 2 of the 3 drives I figured it had to be the last one. That drive is a Seagate GoFlex Desk version that allows different bases with differing connectivity. I had previously used FW800 to connect but had switched to USB3 on the new computer. I went ahead and got a Thunderbolt to FW adaptor cable and switched this drive back to Firewire rather than USB3. So far so good."
For some reason the Seagate I was using didn't agree with the USB3 on the Mac.

  • PC is not going to sleep or shut down after upgrade to Windows10

Hello,I upgraded my laptop from win 8.1 to win 10.Now when I close the lid or press the power button, the computer turns the screen off, turns the WIFI off, no more hard disk activity but it is not going to sleep. Also when I shut it down it goes throught the same procedure but never turns off.To start again, I have to keep pressing the power button to turn it off, then turn it on again.I did the powercfg - energy and got this in the report, "USB Suspend:USB Device not Entering Selective Suspend"When the computer had just started, I don't get that message, it also goes to sleep and shuts down normally, while later, I get this message in the report and no longer sleeps or shuts down.Any suggestion ??Thanks

    Hi  ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues with help from the community!
I came across your post about the Notebook, and wanted to assist you! I have looked into your issue about your HP Pavilion 15 Notebook and issues with sleep or shut down after upgrade to Windows 10. Try using the Windows Update Troubleshooting tool to fix the problem. Here is a document that shows how to update drivers that are not working correctly with Windows 10. HP has been working closely with Microsoft on the development of Windows 10. I hope this helps. Thanks.

As old as your iMac is, have you cleaned out the dust? Dust buildup can lead to over heating issues. Remove any and all things plugged into it including the power cord, Remove the RAM access grille. Vacuum all openings starting with the RAM access area (air intake). Vacuum all ports and plugs, DVD slot and the opening across the top of the rear of the body. Blow compressed air through all your openings and vacuum again to remove any dust you loosend. Reinstall the RAM grille. Plug in the keyboard and mouse if not blue tooth. Insert power cord...

    SMC RESET
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
It is the 5 second timing that initiates the reset.
