Shuts down at random

Help. My imac is beyond warranty and I am debating whether or not to take it in.
My imac randomly shuts down—ping noise, then black screen, then turns off. I have looked at other responses, reset the PRAM, reset the SMU, etc. Also, no overheating in console currently. I only found this "plist parse failed; this data is not proper UTF-8, parser wil retry in 10.2
I did have a similar issue a few months ago and my logic board, among other things was fixed, after the console read overheating issues.
What to do?

To The Apple Discussion Boards!
"I only found this "plist parse failed; this data is not proper UTF-8, parser wil retry in 10.2"
What were you doing when this error cropped up?
"I did have a similar issue a few months ago and my logic board, among other things was fixed"
If Apple repaired the computer, you can always call Apple & inform them that the problem has returned. Hopefully, you kept your case #.

  • IMac shuts down at random, any ideas on cause?

My iMac (G5, no iSight)has in the last 2 weeks started to shut down at random, for example last night it shut down twice in a two hour period. It makes one click noise when it does this and all power is immediately lost. So far it always starts up straight away when the power button is pushed. I did have the power board? replaced a few years ago under Apples extended warrenty scheme and it has been fine since then. I have noticed a few other similar posts and my questions are: does this sound serious and what is causing it, could it be linked to the same issue as the warrenty scheme replacement? is there anything I can do to put right without a big bill coming my way!?
    Regards,
    David.

Welcome to Discussions - it sounds as if your power supply unit is failing, and yes, it could be the same problem as before. Unfortunately, Apple's extended warranty expired last year, so you would have to bear the expense yourself. However, first try vacuuming all the air vents, and open the machine up and vacuum the fans. This could help, as well as resetting the SMU
    1. Turn off the computer by choosing Shut Down from the Apple menu, or by holding the power button until the computer turns off.
    2. Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord.
    3. Wait 10 seconds.
    4. Plug in the power cord while simultaneously pressing and holding the power button on the back of the computer.
    5. Let go of the power button.
    6. Press the power button once more to start up your iMac.

  • Blackberry Curve 9360 Frequently shutting down at random

Having some real issues with my blackberry shutting down at random. Somtimes in my pocket, somtimes when its just sitting on a table, often several times in a day. No, before you ask, its not getting unlocked and shut down by accident. Ensured its not just a low battery issue, as it happens even when it has been fully charged for several hours. When it eventually boots back up, it seems to have forgotten the time and date. It is, very inconvieniant. I am however by no means an expert when it comes to phones, as this is the first one i've had that does anything more than call and text, so any help or advice anyone could give would be greatly appriciated.
    Random Details:
    Provider: Orange
    Model: Curve 9360
OS System: Had some real issues finding this, ill write down what i found (though its probably incorrect). 7.0 bundle 1825 (v7.0.0.400).
The only app i've downloaded onto it is sky news, and the battery has been replaced and played with many different ways to no improvement.

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
I recommend that you attempt to boot into Safe Mode:
KB17877 How to start a BlackBerry smartphone in Safe Mode
It may take you multiple attempts to get the ESC key sequence (press/release/hold) correct, so be patient. When successfully into Safe Mode, think carefully...what happened just before this behavior started? A new app? An update? A Theme? Something else? Think carefully as the smallest change could be causal...and attempt to undo whatever that was.
If your BB remains under warranty, it may be just as well to cease any further diagnostics and seek support from your warranty service provider.
Good luck and let us know!

  • Slow start up & shut down, freezes randomly, sleep issues

My mother has an iMac Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.8 GHz, model iMac8,1, with 4 GB RAM, and a 300 GB hard drive. She uses this computer primarily for email and the internet, and some writing using Pages. So on her hard drive, only 22 GB is used, and the rest is free. She is on OS 10.6.8.
She originally had 2 GB RAM so I thought the lack of RAM was causing her issues. So I recently installed 4 GB RAM, but she's still having problems.
A few of the problems are:
      •  She'd be typing an email and the monitor will suddenly go black.
      •  Safari and Mail sometimes are really slow to load, and often we get the spinning beachball.
      •   Random freezes, especially in Safari, Mail and Pages.
      •   It takes a long time to go to sleep.
      •   It takes a long time to start up and/or shut down.
When the computer freezes, she'd try to restart it, and when that fails, she'd try to manually shut it down by pressing and holding the power button. Sometimes that doesn't even work and she ends up unplugging it.
She still has the same issues, even with the 4 GB of RAM. Her iMac is 2.8 GHz but seems very slow to me (and my MacBook Pro is only 2.0 GHz!)
I ran the Tech Tool Deluxe that she has with the extended Apple Care, and everything passed. I was also concerned about the hard drive's S.M.A.R.T. status, but Disk Utility reported that the S.M.A.R.T. status was verified. I ran the Apple Hardware test in Extended Mode, and everything passed. I also reset the SMC too, along with the PRAM. And of course repaired permissions. PageOuts are zero, and was even zero before increasing the RAM from 2 GB to 4 GB.
I checked Console, and I did find a few weird items that came up often:
    com.apple.print.FaxPrefs.Fax#lookup
    /usr/bin/fax
So I deleted the first one, but was unable to find the second one to delete. I figured it was from my mother's old all-in-one HP which has since been replaced with an Epson, as it seemed to be looking for a fax number or something. I had hoped all my work along with the new RAM would solve the problems but they haven't.
Thank you in advance for any help and suggestions.

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Laptop Lenovo G550 with win7 shuts down(crash) randomly

    Laptop shuts down
My daughter has a new Lenovo G550 laptop. The machine shuts off randomly after boot. I installed on it windows 7 and 5 month everything works fine. I updated all the drivers and also i updated the bios. Laptop keeps shuting down...My daughter says when she plays games or when are too many windows open in internet explorer and torrent open the computer shuts down. She finds out  that , when the proccesor is very much in usage( 90-100% ), laptop shuts off. The temperature seems not so high, i don't see any dirt in fan...Also in safe mode it seems that things go normaly. I get a kernel-power error : "The system has rebooted without cleanly down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding , crashed or lost power unexpectedly". Also i've installed again OS(windows 7) but the problem keep going on. Should i install another OS, like windows XP ? Or should i install again windows 7 cleanly ( with format the hard disk) and see what it happens? If it is OK i start to update, one by one, drivers and after this shall i try to install some applications(one by one to see if any of it can cause problems) ? Any opinion or help please ! Thank you !

I have the same problem except my lenovo is 3 weeks old!  I think it is a software error but I have no idea which software is causing the problem.  It is always a booting error that happens when my desk top is already open.  I have called the support line three times and I am honestly thinking about getting a mac if this keeps happening.  Why can't I use normal software like i-tunes, spotify, microsoft, adobe, and my new external hard-drive without having this problem?  It can't be a hardware problem on such a new computer, right?

  • My Compaq Presario C700 shuts down at randomly and there is no noise coming from the machine at all

My laptop will only turn on for about ten minutes before dying, it doesn't even go through the usual shut down process, it just turns off. Also, there is no sound of a fan or any humming coming from the computer. Before this problem of the random shutting down started, there was always a humming sound coming out. This happened to the computer about a year ago, and I gave it into PC World (Ireland) and they wiped the system and it worked again. So, the minute I saw the same thing happening I backed everything up and wiped it myself, I set up my user in vista again, but the computer was the same and was turning off randomly.
Does anyone know how this can be fixed?? Thanks for your help.
PS: It's A HP Compaq Presario C700 Series Notebook running Windows Vista Home Premium.

There may be a real hardware issue (like spanning above mentioned.) When I lose sound on my phone, here are the things I try, in no particular order:
If you use Apple TV, open a movie file (you tube, music video, anything you can play over Apple TV.) Switch to Apple TV playout and then switch back to your phone. If you left the phone going out to Apple TV, it may have kept the sound routing there -- switching back and forth again should reset it back to playing to your iPhone speakers.
If you use headphones, stick the headphones in and out again. Same kind of idea, the headphone detection may have been incorrect, and the toggle in & out will help it reset back to your speakers.
If you play games, go into a game with sound and adjust the volume there. There are actually three different volume settings (as far as I have experimented with) ringer, "normal" volume, and game volume... it's a little buggy figuring out which one your phone should be using

  • Laptop Shuts Down, Sleeps Randomly.  Help?

So yeah, I've had my iBook G4 14-inch since August of '05, and it's been a great machine the whole time, but recently it started shutting down and sleeping itself seemingly randomly. It works perfectly if it's running on the battery alone, and usually works okay if the battery is in and the adapter is also plugged in--until it starts sleeping itself or shuts itself down, that is. The adapter charges the battery just fine, but the computer doesn't run with the battery out and the adapter in as it should (and used to). On a related note, I've been having another power issue for a while, but it's been occasional enough that I could deal with it and didn't feel the need to post here about it. Sometimes when I'm using the laptop with the battery in and the adapter plugged in as well, even if the battery's fully charged, if I pull the adapter out it will sometimes shut down suddenly. Seeing as my battery, after almost 4 years of use, has been reduced to just 46% of its original capacity (according to a battery utility), I've been considering getting a new battery anyway and would not be opposed to buying a new one now if that would solve the problem. I'm inclined to think it's something to do with the adapter and maybe some built-in power-related software, though, as all these issues seem to come back to that.
    Any ideas?

Since the iBook sometimes doesn't recognize the power adaptor, despite resetting the PMU, it may be that there is a problem with either the power adapter itself or with the DC In Board. Here is a link to an article on troubleshooting the adaptor:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1725
The best way to troubleshoot this is to try a known good adaptor and see if that fixes the problem. That would mean finding a friend with an iBook or PowerBook with a good power adaptor or making an appointment at the Genius Bar at an Apple Store if you have access to one. They would have a store one to try.
Three things actually have to be good. Your battery is marginal, but it seems to work after a fashion. It seems that the problem is with the connection between the power port in the iBook and the power adaptor. The problem could either be with the power adaptor tip or with the port, which is part of the DC In Board. It is common for the port on the DC In Board to become damaged over time, as the solder connections holding the port to the board can break, resulting in poor or intermittent contact.
The DC In Board is not a terribly expensive part, and you could even repair it yourself if you are so inclined:
    http://www.ifixit.com/
    http://www.powerbookmedic.com/
If you don't want to do it yourself, it is not too bad to have it done--I seem to remember around $110 being posted some time back from a local AASP.
    Good luck!

  • Laptop shuts down at random times

basically, ive had my macbook pro for over a year, and i havnt treated the battery particularily badly, i almost always charge to full and then drain to nothing, when i checked in more info, it said check battery, so in ringing apple support i was told to re calibrate my battery, did so, and the battery status didnt change, but instead i was left with the problem that my mac shuts down randomly, the other day it shut down at 51% charge (unplugged) and most other times at around 20%,
    ridiculous? yes.
anyone got any ideas before i go through the horrible means to get apple to have a look. (plus i cant take it into an apple store till christmas cos there isnt one anywhere near me.

  • 2011 iMac keeps shutting down at random after Mavericks install.

Installed Mavericks day 1 of the public build on App Store and ever since my Mac will just randomly shut down and not let me power it back up.  Only has happened when browsing the web and after shut down I have removed power cord from iMac and wall, and also tried different outlets and nothing the first two times I was able to get it back up and running after about 20 minutes of it just being off.  Third time it happened I was not so lucky, made an genius appt and they ran diagnostic test and checked power cord and it of course worked fine for them, took it home and booted instantly... Now 24 hours later it just shut off again and no luck getting it going.  Suggestions please or should I schedule another appt and have them send it in?

  • Phone shutting down at random times

I have been experiencing iPhone shutting down on its own at random times. During times when I am using just the iPod function to listen to music, other times when I am on a call. When I play music the iphone screen actually goes completely black with just a white apple logo in the middle. After that, I needed to re-start (power and home button) for several minutes 'til it all resumes to normal settings. How can I prevent this from happening and what is the best way to restart when it happens again? What's wrong with it?

I've had this same problem. I called apple about it and they said that it seems to be a current problem with a lot of peoples phone. The only question that I have, if anyone can answer, is that Apple is supposed to send me a new phone to replace mine but I am wondering if it will be the 3G or the old model, which is what I already have. If anyone knows then let me know, but Chennie, just call apple and they will help you out.

The sound on my ipad shuts of
I'm a new user of these apple forums so I don't really know how stuff works, bur here's my question
Recently, the sound on my iPad Air randomly shuts down, (os 7.1 downloaded) then it randomly pops up again. Sounds in the videos of photo gallery still works, as well as the videos on the internet (browser: chrome), and videis on Facebook too, but sounds like key board clicks, lock sounds, and games from the App Store store stop working... Please help, and I would also like to know if there are any other owners out there who face the same problem...

    Rev_JC:
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
There are a number of possible approaches to your issue. At first I thought it may be that your logic board was going out. The it sounded as if you needed to Reset the PMU. Finally, who talked about slapping it around and getting results, it sounds like it may be a loose display cable or something of that sort. Since you are completely new to Macs your best bet would be to go online and make an appointment at the Genius Bar in your local Apple Store. It costs nothing. They will look over your computer and give you an idea of what is wrong and what it will cost to rectify it.
Meanwhile, to help to identify your computer more closely, while the computer is booted go to Apple Menu > About this Mac. That will tell you the OS you have installed, the Processor speed and the computer you have. Please report this info back with you response.
Please do post back with further questions or comments.

  • Programs shutting down at random!

My imac has become increasingly slower over the past several months. It now will shut down programs at seemingly random times with no warning (Firefox, Safari, Excel, Word, etc.).
Has anyone had problems like this and is there anything I can try to remedy this problem??

    Hello asilverness
    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Two things pop into my mind,
first is to Repair Disk Permissions as described in the following article:
    http://kb.wisc.edu/helpdesk/page.php?id=3810#permission
second is a question, how much ram do you have in your iMac?

  • My Imac won't turn on. Randomly shut down and randomly shuts off

Yesterday night i was working on my imac and left it on for about an hour leaving the desk. When i came back it was shut down and wasn't able to turn it on. This morning i unplugged it and plugged it to another plug and it turned on. After a while it turned of again and wouldn't turn on. I re-changed plugs here and there with random success. I then changed the the ram as i had put 2x2gb instead of the original 1x1gb si i replaced the original one and it turned on. So to make sure it was the ram i re-inserted the 2gb but it wouldn't turn on and to my great disappointment it wouldn't turn on when i re-inserted the 1gb original ram either... Bit lost. Not sure if it has to do with temperature issues?
    Please help!!!!

Sounds like either an unseated or bad Ram module.
Try pushing real hard on each module with both thumbs to insure that they are firmly seated in the slots.
