Shuts Down Playing iTunes

Search did not turn up anything.
I have an Airport Express that I use to play tunes on my stereo. Open iTunes and set to shuffle play. After about 15-20 minutes iTunes stops playing and I have to open the screen, enter my password, and start playing the same or another tune. Sometimes the computer shuts down to a point that on opening the screen it reloads programs I'm not using, as if I have re-started the computer.
In System Preferences - Energy Saver I have "Put Hard Disk To Sleep When Possible", and "Computer Sleep" and "Display Sleep" set to less than 15 minutes. I would think that when playing iTunes and the keyboard is not touched to reset the sleep clock the Mac would still continue to play, even if it goes into sleep mode with the sceen dark. I can open my internet browser and leave it alone for what seems forever and the computer goes into sleep mode but does not shut down like when using iTunes.
Any help would be appreciated.

Looks like this problem has been around for a time.

Tried some different key words in Google and found this:
"Mac OS X: Why your Mac might not sleep or stay in sleep mode"
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1776
"There are reasons why you may want your Mac to stay awake even though you are not using the keyboard or mouse, such as when you are:
Watching a DVD movie
Listening to your iTunes music library
Running an automated backup
Away from your computer while downloading large files"
"Some things reset the sleep timers, preventing the computer from sleeping:
Hard drive access (even if you're not using the computer, a running application might be accessing your drive, such as when downloading a large file or listening to music in iTunes)"
Clearly my iTunes is not preventing the computer from entering sleep, if that's the problem. From the above statement it would seem that iTunes would automatically prevent sleep, yet that is not the case for me.
I don't think Apple should require that you go to Power Saving options before playing iTunes, it should be automatic that iTunes just stays playing, especially on AC power.
I can't believe there is not anybody out there that can't clarify this issue.

  • IMac shut down playing radio over itunes

An iMac from 2009. It was left alone over an hour playing a radio station over itunes. When came back the computer had shut down, & can be turned back on. Touching the keyboard didn't wake it up. Tried option, command, escape. Pressed on switch in back & nothing happened. Unplugged & replugged it, & still wouldn't start.
I don't have all the details. The computer is in CT & I'm in NJ.
    Any suggestions?

Leave the power & all cords/peripherals unplugged from it for an hour, plug the power back in & see if it boots up.

    Hi pooloo2094,
Makesure you are running the latest version of iTunes, you can download it from the Apple site.
also upgrade to 10.6.8, as well you can go to system preferences>accounts>at the top of the window click login items and see if there iTunes helper, if there is highlight it and click the minus sign.
    Hope this helps.

  • MacBook Pro won't shut down since itunes 7

Since installing iTunes 7 on my MBPro Intel Core Duo with OSX 10.6.8, once I open iTunes, iTunes freezes and requires a forced quit. Then, my MBPro won't shut down, it hangs at the end and requires a forced shutdown with the power button. Any suggestions appreciated.

You can force quit by clicking on the Apple logo in the upper left:
Then selecting the app in the window that comes up and hitting "Force Quit"

  • Mac book pro shuts down playing COD2

i've been playing COD2 for a while on my G5, but poor frame rates got me trying my mac book pro... was quite happy to find frame rates 2X or 3X better than my G5.. however, after i play the game for 15 minutes or so the mac book pro just shuts off.
i figured it was a heat-related problem, so i went out and bought one of those cooling fans that you sit the laptop on... but that has done no good whatsoever....
i get between 10 mins and 30 mins of playing before the mac book pro just shuts off.
sometimes it gets hot, sometimes not.. sometimes it's even shutting off without the fans kicking in..
anyone have any insight? please help!
    thanks

My "battery problem" started exactly like that. When I was playing a game my MBP suddenly shut down. First, after an hour of game play, then half an hour, then after ten minutes finally at start-up.
Until my MBP just started acting out even if I wasn't playing and finally refused to even boot up on battery or then just shut down immediately after I removed the power cord.
Chances are your problem is something else, but it might not be. I just got my battery replaced yesterday, haven't tried to play on it yet. Otherwise it works.

  • OS X does not shut down after iTunes is started

Always after I open iTunes my MacBook Pro OS X 10.8 does not shut down (grey screen with spinning wheel). When iTunes is not used the system shut down properly. It seems to be an issue related to iTunes and not to OS (same behavior under Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion). What can be done to fix this problem?

"the registry settings used by the itunes drivers for importing and burning cds...."
I'd start with the following document, with one modification. At step 12 after typing GEARAspiWDM press the Enter/Return key once prior to clicking OK. (Pressing Return adds a carriage return in the field and is important.)

  • HT201210 my ipod will not shut down both itunes and ipod have frozen. I have restarted but no change

While trying to update the ipod both the itunes and ipod have frozen and I am unable to fix it \. I have restarted the both and let run for 8 hours with no results.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • ITunes freezes when shutting down, playcount not saved

    Okay, hey...
Everytime I shut down my iTunes, it freezes, and this Windows-standard-popup shows and ask me if I want to report the error or just shut down the program. (Sorry this message is different in English, I'm currently on a Danish computer).
So, anyway, after I click "Shut down the program", it closes, so yeah.. problem solved, I thought. But when I start up iTunes again, my play count is not updated. There's this new song, and I've listened to it a gazzilion times, and the play count is XX when I shut down iTunes, but when I start the program again, it's 0. Weird.
And the program still freezes when I shut it down!? EVERYTIME I close it. And the play count is NEVER saved...
    Help...?
    Windows XP

I read in another thread that you needed Quicktime working properly, in order to have iTunes working without any problems.
I just loaded my Quicktime, and it works perfectly. So no problem there.

  • Itunes store bought movie shuts down itunes

everytime i play the movie the punisher i bought off of itunes, it shuts down my itunes or doesnt play the movie well, the audio plays as the video stops and goes

I suspect the movie is a wider than 16:9 widescreen feature.
Many movies are shot with their aspect ratio (width:height) wider than the 16:9 of widescreen TVs.
To see the whole picture you will get the wider width shown on the Tv at the expense of a little height.
This is really the preferred way of watching or you will potentially lose some of the action if the movie is cropped to fill the screen.  Many TV sets however have an aspect ratio/zoom button on the remote which will potentially fill the screen - some will crop, losing the image at the sides, others stretch to fit so in your example people would look too tall, circles would be ovals etc

  • ITunes shutting down when iPod is connected...

I am having trouble getting my installation of iTunes to recognize that there is an iPod connected. My 5th Gen iPod Video can be connected to Windows no problem, I am able to access it as a disk drive, etc, get all the drivers for Windows to install, etc...however, when I start iTunes, the problem excperiences an unexpected error and is needed to shut down immediately.
iTunes is able to start, error free when my iPod is not connected via the USB port - only happens when an iPod is connected during iTunes' start up and when one is connected after iTunes has been started.
Any ideas as to how this can be solved?

With a call to a friend of the family who deals with Apple related troubleshooting, was able to Hard Format the iPod as a FAT32 disk drive and have iTunes recognize it in "recovery mode", allowing me to start iTunes and repair the disk.
