Shuts down won't reboot

A couple days ago while using my macbook (purchased august 2006) the screen went black, and the computer restarted, all on its own.  About 10 seconds after the desktop appeared, this happened again - screen goes black, computer restarts.  This kept happening a couple more times, so I just held down the power button and turned it off.  Later the computer booted normally, but later that day it did it all again.  I powered it off again, and now when I tried to turn it back on it just goes to the grey screen with the apple, and stays there forever.  I pushed the option button at this stage to try to boot from my external hard drive, and then it just suddenly continued booting and went to the desktop, and is working fine - for now.  Another possible factor is that a couple months ago my hard drive died and I got a new one.  Thanks for your help!

I would reinstall your operating system.  Back up your files using time machine first if possible.

Try booting to the Recovery drive, running Disk Utility and Repair disk and Repair Permissions.
    1. Reboot and immediately hold down command and R (two keys).
    2. When you see the screen shown on this page, select Disk Utility and continue.
    3. When DU is running, select the hard drove on the left, First Aid and Repair Disk.
    4. After Repair Disk, click Repair Permissions.
    Quit DU and restart.

The error message you are receiving is usually because of a failing hard drive. Can you go into the BIOS and run hard drive tests?

  • My macbook suddenly shut down, and when rebooted, imovie project was completely gone.  No record of it at all.  Have been working on it for days, and it has always been there.  Any way to restore it?  Thanks.

My macbook suddenly shut down, and when rebooted, imovie project was completely gone.  No record of it at all.  Have been working on it for days, and it has always been there.  Other projects are still there.  Any way to restore it?  Thanks.

    I figured it out!!!
Hey guys! Here's what I did that saved my project.
    -SHORT VERSION-
Use the Finder window on your Mac to copy and paste your old project (the one not showing up in imovie) to a new folder so that iMovie will see it.
    -LONG VERSION-
    CONDITIONS:
The project has to exist on your hard drive. To see if it's hiding around somewhere go to:
Home (your name)>Movies>iMovie Library (right click and select Show Package Contents)
In the iMovie Library folder (the default is usually the date) open it to see if your Project is inside. If it is, you are in luck!
    RESTORING PROJECT:
    Open iMovie
start a new folder under the iMovie Library (again, the default is usually todays date)
    Close iMovie
In the finder window (as explained above in the CONDITIONS section) select the files and folders of your project and copy them (in my case these consist of folders called Analysis Files, Original Media, "MYPROJECT", Render Files, Shared Items)
There should now be a folder with today's date in that Show Package Contents folder.
Paste a copy of your project;s files into this folder.
When it is done copying, open up the "Original Media" folder and all of your images and clips should be present.
reopen iMovie. Your project should show up in the Libraries list.
*If your full project isn't showing in the iMovie timeline (mine just had empty bubbles where all my clips and audio should be) try dragging and dropping the clips and images from the project's "Original Media" folder into the import section of your project. Once the files were reimported, iMovie recognized them all and put them back in the correct place for me.
    Hope this helps someone!

  • Imac power issue - randomly shuts down & won't turn on again

    Hello
Just wondering if anybody could help us with this issue as the Apple Genius's failed to...
Our early 2006 Intel Imac has recently started to switch off at random times. There doesn't seem to be any particular point at which it will do this and no warning either. It's as if somebody has pulled the plug out but the power supply has not been touched! It then often won't allow you to switch it on again until you have left it over night - or sometimes it will switch on after a few minutes.
It is very frustrating as you never know when it might happen, it has been ok for a couple of weeks but now it has done it twice in the last two days.
We did take it to the Apple Store, who said they had kept it on for a day and could not replicate the issue so therefore there is nothing they can do...
If anybody can shed any light on this mystery it would be VERY much appreciated.
    Thank you!

Hello and welcome to the club of "random shut down".
Since 8 days I am also having this problem on an early 2006 2 GHz intel core duo with OS 10.4.11 After approx. 5-10 minutes it shuts down and the only way to wake up again is to disconnect the plug, wait 10 sec and connect it again and push the start button on the back.
There a many discussions ongoing and also many suggestions (SMC reset, memory replacement, change the power cord etc.). Nothing really worked in my situation. My assumption is something with overheating, but the widget "istatpro" or "tempmonitor" are showing not more than 35°C on the CPU at a max.
I found a little tool called "smcFanControl" to adjust the minimum speed of the fans (my settings: ODD 2850 rpm, HDD 3150 and the CPU fan at 2160 rpm) and since that adjustment the working period seems to be much longer. Sure, there is an annoying noise now, but I can use the imac again.
Hope that there will be a better solution soon.

  • MacBook shut down automatically when rebooting

I have The following problem after installing mac osx lion on my Mac book:   The computer shuts down automatically few seconds after i reboot The computer.   Please help. I checked The disk utility but there are nô errors on The disk.

    Hi
Have you solve your problem yet?  Mine was the same - it's Dockables "fault"
Were you able to boot into Safe Mode, by pressing and holding Shift key at Start up, I think you need to press and hold a while, till you see a progress bar below the Apple logo.
Then you can quickly go and delete all the Dockables.
If you found another way to boot up, also delete Dockables immediately.
    Cheers

  • IMac G5 iSight won't shut down, won't install updates

    Hi all,
My iMac G5 (iSight) is giving me some grief.
    First, some details:
    OSX 10.5.7
I have been trying to update this machine and have successfully updated a few things, such as iTunes, iLife, etc. Updates that don't require a restart seem to go just fine. I am unable to install updates to QT7, Safari because the installer hangs up while "Configuring Installation" and won't go any further, no matter how long you leave it.
This iMac also will not shut down. The finder icons disappear, the desktop image remains, and the grey spinning wheel goes on and it will simply not shut down until forced using the power button.
It is starting and functioning otherwise with no problems.
I have disconnected it from drives and and the network in case there was something on the network keeping it, but no luck. I have run Disk Utility and repaired permissions, reset the PRAM and the SMU, as well. No joy. Incidentally, my partner's MacBook Air is also having the exact same problem as this iMac (I posted as well in the MBA forums), but my own laptop, the one I'm using now (details below) is having no problem at all and all updates have taken.
Has anyone any suggestions about anything else I can try to clear this issue before I ring Applecare tomorrow?
    Many thanks!

    Hi Miriam,
I've just tried to run a Hardware Test but the disk is clearly from an older iMac I once had (pre-iSight) because it doesn't want to know about it. I have doubts about it being a logic board problem, however, because I'm having the same problems with a MacBook Air (but not my MacBook Pro) and it only started after a recent round of updates. Worrying, yes, but apart from not installing updates that require a restart or simply shutting down both machines seem to be performing perfectly. It's a bit confusing.
    Thanks!

  • Macbook Pro retina (2012) randomly shuts down, won't wake

My Macbook Pro retina display mid 2012 with OS 10.9 has been acting more and more erratically.
When I close it to sleep, it often won't wake.  Space bar does nothing.  Sometimes after a minute the power button will wake it.  Other times one has to push the power button for over thirty seconds and then it will restart.  Also when leaving it to back up to a time capsule overnight it often will try to shut itself down.  I checked the power saver and automatic shut down panels and those are not set to do that.
Any ideas or do I have to take it to the genius bar?

Yes, especially if you are still under warranty or have AC.  Let Apple deal w/it.

  • IPhone 5 keeps shutting down and needs rebooting even when fully charged?

My iPhone 5 keeps shutting down when left unattended. This requires a full reboot and this doesn't always work either. Sometimes it requires a full reboot several times. Has anyone else had this problem?

I am having the same issue with my iPhone 5s. I travelled to the UK and my phone started having this issue over there (i have turned the cellular data off). I restored my phone last night but when it asked me to set it up again, i chose for it to set up from the back up i had stored on my Mac. The problem is still presistent even though it is shutting down less often. I am going to restore it to the factory settings tonight and see if I keep getting the same issue I will take it to a Mac Genius. However if it works i will let you know

  • My ipad keeps shutting down and then rebooting

My Ipad keeps shutting down and rebooting, is this fixable?

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430

  • Iphone 4 shut down, won't turn on, won't charge and heating

I have the iPhone 4 only for 3 weeks now, the first day I bought it, the phone restart automatically every 3-5 minutes when I plugged it in into the computer, did a hard reset, restore to original setting and upgrade and didn't work. So I send it back to the distributor to fix it - so there go my 1st week of iphone 4 purchase. After a week got the unit back, it was ok for about 10 days or so until 2 days ago, I noticed that the phone won't charge over the night when I plug it into the wall charger. And yesterday I placed it for a charge over the night, this morning I noticed the battery is only 22% and when i pulled out the charger it shuts down. When I plug it back in, it came back on again, however not charging, and shuts down again after I pulled it out. Same thing with the computer plug. Tried to hard reset, but won't work, won't even turn on. So I plug it in and ran the BatteryDoctor app, it seems to fix the problem as it start chargin again, although my Iphone got quite warm in this process. That was morning. Now, the thing shuts down automatically, though the battery was still 40%, did a hard reset and won't work. So plugging it into the computer, it came back on, and again shuts down when it is pulled out, however this time hard reset works. This is starting to worry me. Is this a hardware problem?? I some threads that  people are having a shut down problem also. HELPPP!

Ok, so I went to try that and run the program it said I needed .Net Framework 4.0 installed, so I was on my way to update that so I could try to run the program.
Anyway, before I did that, a coworker comes by and I show her that my phone is dead. I unplug it from my computer (it's not charging or anything) and I start pressing the power button rapidly to show her it's dead. All of a sudden the screen turns on and shows me that the battery is drained and needs to be recharged. I quickly connect my phone back to the computer and it begins charging. After a few minutes the Apple logo appear and it is detected on my computer! It is currently charging and is seen in iTunes. All is well again.
What's weird is that I know for a FACT that the battery was not dead when the update was done. In fact the phone showed FULL battery right before I unplugged it the first time.
I don't know if it was a combination of the steps above or what, but whatever it was, I appreciate everyone's input.

  • Failed to shut down.  cannot reboot

MacBook Pro.  Didn't shut down because applications open.  Then cannot use, open, close.  Mouse moves, but nothing functions. Force quit application, still locked.  How can I shut down or reboot?

  • Won't shut down, won't empty trash, can't force quit, hangs forever

Hi all. Multiple problems here with MacBook Air. Can't even give you the specific OS because of the hanging problem. In brief the issues are:
    1. It won't shut down unless by using the power button.
    2. It won't empty the trash. Nor will it stop emptying the trash. All attempts to do so are met with either the warning that an application is in use (only the trash is in use) or it hangs
    3. It is impossible  to force quit. The usual keystrokes have no effect and in any case the third keystroke - usually esc- is shown under the Finder as an arrow comIng out of the upper left (open) corner of a semi-circle. Although this is a Spanish keyboard there is no corresponding key anywhere on the computer
    4. Any attempts to open any other application while engaging in the fruitless attempts to empty the trash are met with the dreaded beach all of death.
As a consequence I can only use the MacBook Air by not emptying an ever growing amount of trash. This can't possibly be good.

    David ...
Hopefully you can boot in Safe Mode so you can find out which OS X is installed. Troubleshooting advice can depend on that information.
Startup your Mac in Safe Mode
A Safe Mode boot takes much longer than a normal boot so be patient.
Then click the Apple menu  top left in the screen. From the drop down menu click: About This Mac
    Note the version number.
Then click Restart from the Apple () menu.
Post back with the OS X version please.

  • My Mac shuts down, won't sleep

My Macbook no longer sleeps. When I close the cover the sleep light goes out and it turns off completely. It also asks me 'do you want to shut down' all the time. I tried an SMC update but I received the message, this computer does not need this update', or something to that effect. Any fixes out there? Thanks

Forgot to add that there are no problems with the battery. It charges and function fine. Thanks.

  • Mini Server won't shut down/won't start up until power is pulled

I am running OS X 10.9.1 on a Mac Mini Server 2.6 GHz Intel Core I7 / 16 GB ram. I have been having issues shutting down my Mac. I start the shut down process but it gets to a gray screen/beach ball and will sit there forever until you hold the power button down. I tried shut down again with all external drives disconnected and get no change.
Also, if I leave Mac on sometimes I can login normally and sometimes I find out that it has actually shut down completely by itself. It is not sleeping. I can't seem to turn it on unless I pull power cable.
I have checked temp of unit and it appears to have plenty of ventilation felling only slightly warm to touch. My keyboard is wired and I have a Bluetooth touch pad.
I re-installed the latest "Mavericks" just to make sure but no change. Seems like the shut down issue may have started 1st before I upgraded. When I do get Mac to start back up everything seems normal, no errors. The only thing barking is Google Chrome stating that I can start where I left off. I have not caught it shutting down so I thought it had something to do with the Energy Saving settings but it is at the "Default" setting.
The Mac is definately off and not sleeping, no light on front.
Any tips or help would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    -Z

OK, I tried setting Energy Savings to 1 minute. The Mac shut down and would not power back up via the power button, had to pull power plug. So it seems to be tied to the Energy settings.
