Shutter count in Preview
Is the Image Count that's in Preview in Hex or Decimal? If you load a Nikon image either NEF or JPEG the Command I the Tabs for EXIF & Nikon show an image count.
I understood this was a Hex number but a new camera shows my image count matching the actual images I have taken.
Its a useful shutter count tool.
Anyone know the definitive answer?
Preview will hilight and display a count of the number of pages the target search string is found on.
If you want to literally count every word in document, there are many utils available as well as Pages and of course the terminal. I use either Pages or TextWrangler. To count words in a PDF I clipboard from Preview and dump into Pages and count there via 'Inspector'.

Where to find Shutter Count for Nikon Camera?
Is this part of the EXIF data that Aperture displays?
I just tried Cena's method of Exporting the file to the desktop. When I click on it and press Command - I, the shutter count doesn't show up.
Please read my instructions ;-)
In Aperture: show in finder (if you don't have referenced files export the file to desktop(export as original file!), open with preview app.
Then bring up the info dialog (press Command-i) klick on the i-icon/tab, this will bring up a nikon-tab. Here you can find the shuttercount.
You must first open the image with preview.app! before you press command-i. Then click on "i-icon". -
5D Shutter Count in Bridge?
I'm told I can view my 5D shutter count in Bridge. Is this so, and if it's not in the Metadata, then where can it be located? TIA.
Had a discussion with someone over a year ago on this subject. He wanted to add camera info that was not in Bridge. Believe there is a way to do that, but can not remember final outcome.
Might be more productive if you start another thread with title something like - can I add camera exif data bridge does not read? Before you do this, do some searches here and on the web.
There was one Bridge hit that showed how to add cost of picture, but that was to IPTC. Guy wrote a paper on it and would e-mail it if interested.
Many hits on google also that you might want to sort though. Did not quickly see exactly what you were looking for. -
I just bought a Canon G1x and wish I knew how to find shutter actuations...or do I need some kind of Canon software? I was able to access shutter count on my G9 with a formatted SD card, but it doesnt work on this G1X. Anybody know how to find count on G1X?
How did you do it with the G9? As far as I've known the only way to be sure of the count was on early 1 series bodies using one of the programs designed to get it. Other than that the only way was to set the camere to "continous" when choosing the file numbering system. If you don't set it to that it restarts from 0001 each time you download & kills the idea of getting a count later in life. I have read about programs that can figure it out on newer bodies but so far they are all less than reliable.

I just bought a used 1DS MKII. The camera had a new shutter installed by Canon last year and the first owner then stored it. I was curious about shutter count so went to myshuttercount.com and after uploading a JPEG from the camera, was told the camera had 28,388 activations.
My question: Canon resets the count after a new shutter is installed. Would that reset effect the information that myshuttercount gathers from a JPEG?They do reset it. 28k is not a lot. I think the first owner just says he/she "store" but in reality he/she means "i don't use it as much".

Does anyone in the forum know how I can determine the shutter count I have logged on my T3i? The camera is still going strong without any problems at all (except for a few dead pixels that appear as tiny red spots in some images). I am mostly just curious about this. Is there any indication how many shutter releases the average T3i can be expected to fire? My T3i is my first dslr and it has served that role fabulously.
As Tim mentioned, there's Shuttercount. But many other programs (that many camera owners already have) can give you the count as well. If all you want is the count then Shuttercount is probably the easiest, but it's good to have options:
Magic Lantern: Third party add-on for your camera. Free, but you install a firmware add-on onto your camera. Best to know what you're doing before installing. Again, if you just want the count there are better options.
DSLR Controller: An app for controlling your camera from a smart phone or tablet. Fantastic app, but it costs $10. I wouldn't spend it for just count, but the app itself is awesome if you want to control your camera remotely.
FoCal: A program for fine tuning your cameras autofocus. Unfortunately doesn't work with your camera, but most people who have fine-tunable cameras already own this so I thought I'd mention it.
APT: An astrophotography tool. There's a free trial for download that should tell you shutter count. Can't say I've tried it. -
I've searched the web and googled to find a program that can tell me my shutter count on my Canon 60D. I only found 2 solutions, Eoscount, and Magic Lantern. I tried Eoscount and it would'nt work, I think because my Pc is 64 bit. I'm kind of leery to use Magic Lantern while my Camera is still under warranty. Does anyone know a program to find shutter count, or anyother way I can find my shutter count????.

That puts me on track to reach 100,000 shutter counts within 2 years." Really? Is that "new math" ? 5652 divide by 3 to get monthly = 1884. 1884 x 24 months = 45,216. Not even half way!Golly gee Obiwan, I don't know what was in the milk I had last night, but yeah, that must be some kinda new math i figured with....you're correct Man, I have no idea how I was off that far. Though I did just throw the figures togather up in my head. I just re-did it on my calculator and came up with the same thing you did. But this makes me very happy to learn, now I can expect my 60D to get twice as much mileage as I had figured. Now appox 4 years before i need to worry, though I know my shutter may last long after 100,000....or before. That makes me feel real good, along with the fact that now I'm taking less pics everyday, and that will help also. Thanks for pointing that out, i'll sleep a little easier tonight -

How can I get the shutter count for my Canon 7D Mark II using Windows XP?
How can I get the shutter count for my Canon 7D Mark II using Windows XP? I've been looking lots of places and doing some file uploads, but I can't seem to find anything. I'm wary of downloading software I know nothing about. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Shutter actuations for Canon 1Ds Mk III
How can I determine the total number of shutter actuations for my 1Ds Mk III ? Does it really require getting some specialty software ?

Every where I searched I got incorrect advice from everyone. Seems people like to hear themselves talk when they cannot answer factually and accurately. If you want the shutter count on a canon eos 1ds mark 3, go to this site. I got an accurate count there. http://shuttercounter.com/
Not to be argumentative (and I wouldn't dream of offering you unsolicited advice), but given the uncertainty that seems to dog this issue, how exactly do you know that the count you got from that site is accurate?

I think I am having shutter issues with my 5D mark iii. image is vignetting on top of frame. ( left side when shooting portrait).
does not happen all the time. shoot 20 frames, not a problem then will happen 4 or 5 in a row or every other shot for a few shots.
Studio situation with 4 lights but it is not a light issue. subject is dark also. all lights fire at full. happens weather at 1/100 or down to 1/20. these 4 examples were shot at 1/50 f 10 iso 100. raw converted to jpeg. shooting teathered but I dont think that matters. has anyone else had shutter issues? can any one from canon give me any info or help??It may be that the flash is firing as the shutter is opening... but if you're having an issue with a sticking shutter, the shutter isn't completely open when the flash fires.
If this is the case then it wouldn't matter how long the shutter is open because the flash doesn't provide light continuously when the shutter is open... it only gives a burst. That momentary burst is normally fired at the moment the shutter finishes opening up completely (but if the shutter is sticky and isn't completely finished opening when the flash fires... you'd have a dark edge.)
If you used 2nd curtain shutter so that it doesn't fire until the moment before the shutter is intended to close, you shouldn't see vignetting even if the shutter is sticking.
But this makes me wonder what the shutter count is on your body and if it needs service.

Yes the supplied profile works - in my test shots it corrects distortion and vignetting nicely - but it is a pain to have to pick the proffile by hand for each shot.
My real issue is Lightroom not correctly identifying the lens and listing it as "Unknown" in the meta data. Was hoping there was a way to teach lightroom to recognize it - or a config file to hack to make it recognize the lens.
For testing puposes I changed the raw format of my Pentax from DNG to PEF but got the saame result.
Anyone else have ideas?

Unknown camera and unknown lens
Hello,
For some reason today, Aperture is not recognizing my camera or lens when I import images from my memory card. There is no photo or exif metadata being reported by Aperture for the photo's imported today. Photo's that were imported last Monday have the correct photo and exif metadata.
Photo's were taken with a Nikon D7000 and 35mm f1.8 DX lens. I used ViewNX2 to grab the metadata from one of the photo's on the memory card and the camera make and lens information are correct. When I open the file in Preview.app I can see the following metadata in the "Exif" tab:

I noticed the Lens ID in the Aperture metadata shows -2,147,483,648. That seems odd to me. However, the Lens Model, and Lens Info appear correct. I checked the Lens ID number with Preview for one of the photo's in Aperture where the metadata appears correctly and it is the same -2,147,483,648 number. So, I surmise my camera likely does not use this field. From the "TIFF" tab I have the following metadata:
Artist:
Copyright:
Date Time: 2012-10-14 11:13:36 AM
Make: NIKON CORPORATION
Model: NIKON D7000
Orientation: 1 (Normal)
Resolution Unit: inches
Software: Ver.1.02
X Resolution: 300
Y Resolution: 300
The Make (Nikon Corporation) and Model (Nikon D7000) appear correctly. There is a "Nikon" tab as well which reports:
Flash Setting: NORMAL
Focus Mode: AF-S
ISO Setting: 0, 400
Lens Type: 6
Quality: FINE
Shooting Mode: 1
Shutter Count: 8,823
White Balance Mode: AUTO1
None of this metadata makes it into Aperture for any of the photo's imported today even though the metadata is being viewed with Preview directly from the corresponding JPG files imported into the Aperture library.
Other information that may or may not be relevant:
I reinstalled Aperture a little over a week ago because the names of the adjustment bricks suddenly changed to names that all started with "DG..."
Adobe Flash suddenly stopped working when viewing an online video today and I could not view a flash video from any website after that. I uninstalled and reinstalled Flash.
OS X 10.8.2 supplemental update was installed today after I noticed this problem (from 10.8.2).
Any idea's?
SteveUpdate.
I trashed the preferences and moved the ~/Library/Application Support/Aperture folder. No change.
I created a new library, imported a photo and then could not see the project. Quit and Aperture will not open the library but I can open it with iPhoto. Sure enough, the imported photo does not have the photo or exif metadata. However, if I create a duplicate of the exact same photo from the master directory in the library and import it again using iPhoto, the metadata appears.
So, definitely an Aperture issue. Will try another reinstall. -
Lightroom and DxO: fix lens flaws in a TIF file exported from LR
Hi,
I'm in love with LR, I don't mind if people tell me that other Raw converter do a better job in demosaicing. Anyway some time ago a friend told me about DxO Optics Pro, I tried and loved the lens corrections. I thought I could prform those correction at the end of my workflow on a Tiff file exported from LR to DxO. No way! It seems that DxO doesn't recognize the lens used to shoot the image. It seems that LR and Camera Raw delete all the infos related to optics used. Any help would be appreciated.
Bye!I used the following command to swap exif data:
exiftool -all= -tagsfromfile DSC_0002.NEF -exif:all DSC_0009-2.tif
The TIF file contais less exif tags than the NEF (or DNG) file, and there is no tag about the lens used.
Here's what I get copying exif data from one file to another:

IPhoto is deleting (some) EXIF-Tags when editing
Hi,
i have the following problem with iPhoto 6.0.4:
When a picture is edited with iPhoto some of the stored EXIF informations are deleted. Sadly this is already the case when iPhoto rotates an image while importing it from my D50.
A little example: The following picture was imported with iPhoto from my camera an at this time automaticly rotated.
EXIF info of the file in the "Originals" Directory:

Is there any setting to prevent iPhoto from doing this? Or is this a know problem and will this be changed in the future?
thx in advance

MacBook Pro Mac OS X (10.4.7)Bapf:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I've noticed that any edit by iPhoto does leave out a number of EXIF fields. iPhoto, being a consumer application, is apparently not as concerned with EXIF/metadata as the professional applications like Aperture or iView MediaPro.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
