Shutting Down and Freezing

<< Post moved for better exposure >>
Yes, I have been having this problem with a three-month old Nokia Lumia 822.
About a month ago, my original phone began to freeze, which I resolved by turning it off then on again.  Then, it shut itself off a few times.
Then, about two weeks ago, it shut itself off and wouldn't start up at all.  I called for live help.  A technician walked me through various tests until she determined that the phone was defective.  She then helped me reactivate an older cell phone I still had and I used that for a week while a replacement phone was sent to me.
When the replacement phone arrived, I invested 3 hours with technicians on my home telephone helping me get the new phone up and operable.  Before that day was out, the new phone shut itself off and wouldn't restart.
I called Verizon again and while running through more tests with another technician, the phone came on again.  However, I asked if the battery might be the problem and he agreed to send a replacement.  While waiting for the replacement, the phone died again and wouldn't come back on.  I called and another technician offered to overnight me a battery, since he researched the first battery replacement and saw that it had been sent by ground and wasn't scheduled to arrive for another few days.  This technician guided me through a few more steps and we got the replacement phone with original battery to start up again.
The second battery arrived the following morning, which was yesterday.  When I put it into the phone to check its charge, I saw that it was over half-charged, so I kept it in the phone and went off to an appointment.  Before the day was out, the phone died again.  I took the battery out and put in the old battery, and the phone came back on.  I took out the old battery and put in the new battery, and the phone came back on, too.
Now, today, the phone has died twice.  This time, I just took out the battery and put it back in and the phone starts up.
NEVERTHELESS, this removing and reinstalling the battery should not be a required operation multiple times per day.
So, please, Verizon Technicians, Please let us know how to remedy this issue permanently.  Thank you.

"this removing and reinstalling the battery should not be a required operation multiple times per day" - I completely agree.
I got my Lumina 822 in December.  It was working perfectly, outside of the "other storage" filling up rather quickly.  Until about 2 weeks ago, it froze, and when I took the battery out and put it back in, it said, "unable to find a bootable option."  I have a replacement now, sent the old one back (Verizon must not have even gotten the old one yet because I got a reminder message today to return it).  Now this "like-new" replacement is freezing multiple times a day.  Sometimes it works for hours, but other times, it freezes multiple times within an hour.  It even freezes overnight, and so my alarm doesn't go off in the morning.  I just got everything re set-up, so I'm not really looking forward to calling Verizon for another replacement, but I think I might just need to do so.

  • Phone shutting down and freezing up?

Is anyone who has the iPhone 4S experiencing problems such as frequent shut down and freezing after installing ios7? I never dropped my phone, it never got wet. These problems I'm being told even from my carrier are due to ios7. Now I have to pay $125.00 right before the Holiday season if I want to go though my insurance or 200 if I go though Apple. Even the apple customer service rep told me that he was sure that this problem was because of IOS 7. I've tried resetting it to factory settings. At least 3x a day it completely freezes up and/or shuts off. Additionally the WiFi is greyed out and won't connect to any wifi.
    Help!

    @JMcDonald10
I understand how being available to be contacted is very important. Let's work together and get this resolved immediately.
Yes the device does come with a  one year manufacturers warranty.  We have several options that we can try before replacement. You won't even have to leave your home. Did this problem start after a particular application was downloaded? Put the Incredible in Safe Mode and retest. Here's a link for Safe Mode. Does it freeze or reset?
If it is an application that's causing this and you can't find which one, I would recommend backing up the device and performing a hard reset.
Please let me know if you still experience any issues after these steps. We want you to have a great experience with your Incredible!
    Thank you

  • Random shut down and freeze

In the summer 2014, our family purchased Pavilion 23 touch smart all in one pc (model# 23-h109) from the futureshop. The Pc was shutting off and freezing randomly, so we returned it and exchanged with a new one. For some reason we didn't use the pc for about 5 months, assuming the new pc is working properly. After my laptop became unfunctionable, I started to use the pc then I discovered that the new pc was having same issue. At this point, exchange and return was expired at futureshop so they asked me to contact HP directly, so I did. I called the Hp support and they were telling me to follow unnecessary procedures (check the power, restart the computer, diagnoise, hardware check and etc.) when clearly it was hardware problem and needs to be sent in for repair, I felt like they were avoiding for the repair. Calling the Hp support didn't solve any issue or provided me with pleasant experience. If I were to call them again, I feel like they will ask me to do the same thing over and over. so this time I sent them an email explaining my situtation about 2 weeks ago, but havn't heard ANYTHING from them.
The shut down and freeze usually happens 3 times in one hour, so I have 25-30 minutes of usage then it restarts. This is very frustrating because warranty expiry date not much left. I have no idea what to do at this point, please if you're expert in this field, give me advice on which action to be taken next. Thank you for your time.

  • My ipod touch, 4th gen shuts down and freezes. What can I do?

My ipod 4 started to freeze which I would have to then reset. Now it is turning off all by itself. What can I do to fix this?  BTW- it is only 1.5 months old.
    Thanks!

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order. If defective, within warranty and not aboused Apple will exchange it at no cost.

Which OS X is installed on your Mac ?
Click the Apple () menu top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac. The version is noted there.
Troubleshooting advice can depend on that information.

  • T500 shuts down/or freezes when I plug in my AC adapter and now will not start up.

I have had my T500 for two years and I have had endless problems with this laptop. My latest issue started with the computer waking up from sleep mode with a black screen. The computer just froze there and I had to force it to shutdown. When I finally managed to get it started again, the computer gave me an alert saying that a display driver had stopped working. The computer ran fine for a while before it would issue the blue screen of death then have the same black screen issue again and shutdown. Then it got to the point where if I have my computer plugged in it would not even get to the BIOS screen, it would simply loop-restart over and over till I unplugged it, pulled out the battery, put the battery back and turned it on again. Then it would not start at all if I had my adapter plugged in and if I plugged it in at all while the computer was running, it would freeze and after a minute would shut down and again continuously try to start up. Now, the computer will not start in any way, plugged in or no. The lights all turn on like it normally does when it starts up, but then it shuts off and repeats the same process over and over again.
I have no idea what to do this time and unfortunately being a student I do not have enough money to buy an external harddrive to back up everything on this computer. Frankly with all the problems I have had with this thing, I am considering just throwing it out.

Try making a bootable Ubuntu disc and running that for a while. It's possible your Windows install is hosed.

A few days ago my G5 started to freeze up while in use. It doesn't matter if in Safari, iTunes, Pages, etc. The cursor will not respond nor does any keystroke, force quit, escape, etc. I have to hold the power button down to shut the computer down. Then, try to restart. Sometimes restart will work and the computer will work for a while and then freeze again. Other times on restart, instead of the Apple logo at start up, I get a Zero with a line thru it, have to power off and restart again. When it does restart, the "spinning gear" takes a lot longer than normal to spin up and take me to the login screen. Have been told it may be my hard drive getting ready to fail. Have looked at disk utilities, S.M.A.R.T looks fine, "verified" and have verified disk, and repaired permissions. In case it is the hard drive, I bought external hard drive and hooked it up to Time Machine. The backing up to a long time, overnight, about 10 hours because it kept freexing up and I would have to shut down and try restarting again. Finally got everything backed up.
Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated!!!   Could it be my hard drive is dying? Is the the normal chain of events or is it something else???

Believe it or not, anything on the Desktop uses 3 times the Resources of the Mac than if stored elsewhere, I can note a slowdown from just 30 items on the Desktop on a really fast Mac, so the less the better on the Desktop.

At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667/applejack
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 6 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
    Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files! :-)
Disconnect the USB cable from any Uninterruptible Power Supply so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.

  • Computer Freezes and Hard Drive goes bad on shut down and re-start

I have MacBooks running Leopard. We have had several so far this school year where it has frozen on the user. The user holds down the power key to shut-down and re-start. On re-start, either it just gets to the solid gray screen or it might show the folder with the question mark. When I boot it up from an install disk and run disk utility...I try to repair the hard drive which often fails, the drive is grayed out, and I try to re-partition which also fails. I then send them in for AppleCare who has replaced the hard drives. I have about 2-3 a week so far and I'm curious why this is happening. We got the laptops in March so they are relatively new. Is it the shut down process? Remedies to help prevent the freeze up (I'm guessing the kids have too many apps running at one time)? other thoughts?

I'm not sure but have you tried getting them to shutdown through the apple menu instead of the power button?

  • I have an iPad2 and have been experiencing problems since the last software update.  My iPad randomly freezes and has to be shut down and restarted to move between apps.  The screen also suddenly enlarges and can't be reduced in size without shutting down

Not sure if anyone else is experiencing the same issue of the screen freezing or suddenly enlarging.  I'm having to shut down and restart as much as five or six times a day.  This has been happening pretty regularly for the past week or more, but seems to be getting worse.  Could it be the last software update?

Close all apps in Multi-Task Window.
    1. Double tap the home button to bring up the multi-tasking view
    2. Swipe the app's windows upwards to close
    3. The app will fly off the screen

How can I solve it in orther to use the apps? It doesn´t occur with my iPad, only with my iPhone 5.

Thankyou for your kind answer: with Dropbox, it solved the problem; with Friends, still the same

  • My MBP (2007 intel) freezes or spontaneously shuts down and crackling comes from the speakers.

My MBP (2007 intel) freezes or spontaneously shuts down and crackling comes from the speakers. Sometimes this happens together all at once? It happens with and without peripherals. Has this happened to anyone else?
It does not seem to be linked to a specific program or periferal use.
I would appreciate if someone can shed some light on this.

Run the Apple Hardware Test and swee if any issues are discovered.  Also a SMC and PRAM resets may help.

  • Good day all, I am new to Mac. Just at a time when I am in the middle of something, my Mac will just prompt me to shut down and restart again. The computer will just freeze, and will not respond unless it is shut down and restarted. Is that how it works

    Good day all,
I am new to Mac. Just want to find out if your Macs always prompt you to shut down and restart. Mine happens very often sometimes, and it can be very embarrassing, especially just when you think you are almost done with what you are doing, only for you start all over again. Or, is there anything I am doing wrong, somebody please help, Thanks.

  • My MacBook suddenly shut down and won't turn back on - how do I get it to turn back on?

My MacBook suddenly shut down after freezing up and I cannot get it to turn back on again.  I tried the suggestions in the manual and none of them worked to turn it back on. Is there something I am not doing correctly?  The little green light on the charger connector is green but not as bright as normal, it was charged by over 70% before it shut down, so I do not think it is a battery problem.  Is there anything I can do to turn it back on?  Thank you for any help given, I really appreciate it.

If it won't bong, then try an SMC reset.

  • Problems shutting down and getting 'Error -39 when trying to open my files

After working all evening using my Macbook Pro, I close out all my programs and shut down the computer.
However, the computer refuses to shut down. The screen freezes and just sits there. After about 10 minutes of waiting I eventually hold down the power button to shut the computer off.
When I restart the MacBook Pro and try to open the file I was working on, I get the following error. 'While attempting to access [FILE], the file manager reported an error -39.'
    Why does this keep happening?
MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    4 GB Ram MHz DDR3
    Mac OS X 10.5.8
    Finale 2010
    Logic Studio 9
    Yamaha PSR-310 via Midi Interface
    null

I don't think you're having an Apple hard disk issue, because your other applications are working without problems.
I believe you are getting the corrupted file(s) (End of file, Error -39) because you are powering off the computer before the application and the computer have completely shut down.
I can't tell you why it is happening, but I suspect that the Finale application is being extremely slow to shut down, and it is leaving the '.mus' file open until it quits.
*Kostby, thanks so much for your reply. I actually work for a software company, so I asked a few people around here and they agree with you. For some reason, the application is taking a very, very long time to quit, and it's causing the computer to keep running instead of shutting down.*
Perhaps some file was corrupted in the old version of the Finale application was carried over with the upgrade? Have you tried reinstalling the application?
*I haven't, but this is a good idea. I will completely remove the program and start over.*
    Hardware...
I notice that the keyboard dates from 2006/2007.
*Actually, it's from 1993 (time flies...)*
Is the midi interface Firewire or USB?
    USB
Does the midi interface ever cause an error or a 'hang' with or without the keyboard?
*Not that I'm aware of. I haven't used it in awhile, and it's not been connected to the computer in weeks.*
Are there software drivers needed to make the Midi interface work with the Mac.
*No, I simply plugged it in and it worked. No extra software or drivers needed.*
Are the drivers old? (e.g. 10.4.x or 10.5.3)
    N/A
Have you tried saving the file to a USB flash drive, rather than a physical hard disk?
*I haven't, but I'll need to save a few tonight if I do a reinstall of Finale.*
Powering off vs suspending vs leaving it run...
Do you get the 'spinning beachball' (spindump) when Finale apparently hangs?
*No spinning beachball. The desktop simply freezes...*
What happens if you leave it on for an hour or overnight after the apparent 'hang'?
*Never done that. Longest I've left it alone during the 'hang' has been about 15 minutes.*
Does the screen ever come back and let you use the computer again?
*After 15 minutes I would hit the power button and force it to shut off. I've never allowed it to go on for this long. I just thought if it didn't come back after 15 minutes it wasn't ever coming back.*
Does the file corruption occur when you suspend the application by closing the lid, rather than shutting it off?
*I've never just closed the lid on my Macbook Pro. I've always either set it to sleep or shut down and waited for it to do so before closing the lid.*
Thanks again for the great suggestions. I will try them all this evening when I get home from work.
    Best,
    Dana

  • Why does my Macbook Pro keep telling me I have to hold down my power button until it shuts down and then restart?, Why does my Macbook Pro keep telling me I have to hold down my power button until it shuts down and then restart?

While transferring files from one external hard drive to another, my MacBook Pro routinely would freeze and often render a message to hold down the start button until it shut down and then restart. I have i7 why does it keep locking up?

You can go back to original hardware; run Apple Hardware Test even.
Remove 3rd party RAM ( much rarer I think )
