Shutting down at 20% power

Macbook Pro circa 2009, 2.26 Intel Core 2 Duo, OS 10.8.2.
Some weird things have been happening lately, but most obvious is this. At between 15-20% power, my machine shuts down. Or rather, goes into a power conservation hibernation. I plug in a power supply and after pressing the power button it wakes up. It's as if 20% actually means 0%.
Another anomoly has been the machine not waking from sleep. The keyboard lights are on, but the display does not wake, requiring a force restart. But I guess I'm more concerned about the first one at the moment.
This is unsettling, no idea how to troubleshoot. Thank you for any assistance.

Have you done the battery update? About Battery Update 1.2.
I had this happen to me but at 23%. Apple replaced my battery with no problem. If your MacBook is the original core duo which it sounds as it is then you are in luck. The battery for the original has had it's warranty extended an extra year. Even if you MacBook warranty is dead the batteries isn't. If the update doesn't work contact Apple at the number listed in the update.
One point is be firm but polite. I had no problems getting mine but others have had to argue some to get the battery replaced.

  • Mac Book Pro Shuts down on Battery Power

First, I apologize to everyone for asking this question yet again. I have gone through the previous posts and I am still at a loss. So thank you for your patience and help.
When I run my MacBook pro on battery power it will run for around 15 - 20 minutes... then just be dead. No low battery warning. No shut down. Just poof and gone.
I have looked at my power settings to see if my battery is bad. But I don't have a Status indicator in there. I see This:

    Disk Sleep Timer (Minutes): 10
    Display Sleep Timer (Minutes): 0

I have also looked at the directions on http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1490 about how to calibrate my battery. It says:
" 1. Plug in the power adapter and fully charge your PowerBook's battery until the light ring or LED on the power adapter plug changes to green and the onscreen meter in the menu bar indicates that the battery is fully charged.
    2. Allow the battery to rest in the fully charged state for at least two hours. You may use your computer during this time as long as the adapter is plugged in.
    3. Disconnect the power adapter while the computer still on and start running the computer off battery power. You may use your computer during this time. When your battery gets low, the low battery warning dialog appears on the screen.
    4. At this point, save your work. Continue to use your computer; when the battery gets very low, the computer will automatically go to sleep.
    5. Turn off the computer or allow it to sleep for five hours or more.
    6. Connect the power adapter and leave it connected until the battery is fully charged again."
Only I have a problem withe step 3 and 4. I don't get the warning, and it doesn't go to sleep. So, I don't think any calibration is working.
Do I need a new battery? Should I just buy one? This computer is WAY out of warranty and I never purchased and apple care plan for it.
Again, than you for any and all advice on what I may need to do.

I think it's time to buy a new battery

  • Is there a way to automatically shut down laptop when power button pressed?

Of all the things I am having to struggle through a learning curve on MacOS (converted from Windows), this might seem like a rather benign concern, but I'm going to ask anyway. . .
I would like for my laptop to automatically go through a shutdown process when the power button is pressed - that is, bypass the dialog box that appears when hitting the power button that gives you the option to restart/shutdown, etc.
I've looked in all of my system preferences without anything that controls the behavior of this button so I imagine there might be a terminal command or an app that might accomplish this?
Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

I'm trying to set up my MacOS to have the power button automatically go through the shutdown process as IF I had actually clicked on a confirmation box to shut down the computer.
I don't know of any way of doing that... perhaps there's a 'haxie' out there that would generate a shutdown command when pressing the power button, but I don't know of one.
    Sorry,

  • Mac shuts down when 90% POWER and its PLUGGED IN!

I recently took over my husbands mac pro OS 10.4.11. At first, all was going well. Then I noticed one day, it shut down on me and I was like, that's weird, I had no warning. I did see other postings about this so it must be common or an issue with the battery. The thing is, its plugged in 100% of the time when I use it...if I do not have it plugged in, well, it shuts down after about 5mins...if that. I am not sure what is going on. Does anyone know (if it is the battery), roughly what a fix like this would cost? I read on other posts that you need the battery info, etc....this is what my mac says: Anyone have any idea just looking at this?? I greatly appreciate it!!!!!

Actually, it just shuts right off, even being plugged in. For instance, it has been plugged in all day and my battery icon (at the top right) shows 98%...but the power cord (normally green light shows, is orange)...it just shut off on me about 5mins ago again. No warning, no programs saying they will close, just went black. No hibernation, etc...I had to push the "on" button to get it back on...It's so frustrating. Almost like it has had enough and goes off or like it's dying....So even though the battery shows fully charged, it still just shuts off....and I can be in the middle of typing or web surfing, etc...it doesn't happen when I just have it on but not using it (like a power saving thing)..it shuts off even when it is actually being used. I have no clue what to do.
Thanks so much for trying to help me out. I really appreciate it!

Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • USB shut down - too much power drawn

    Hi
Yesterday when trying to connect my Canon EOS350D to my MBP, I changed the camera settings.
Then, a message appeared on the MBP saying something like "A device is drawing too much power from the USB port - shutting down the bus".
I figured it was temporary. Seems it's permanent. Many reboots and resets (PMU) later, no USB device that I own will work in any port in any way.
Any ideas? I am fairly tech literate but this is my first Mac. All up to date.
    Thanks
    Dom

OK - It seems to have been fixed.
I called Apple, and they did a PRAM reset. When we restarted, still no joy, so we did a full hardware scan.
This came up clean. They passed me on to a product specialist, but I had to go to work.
Then, tonight, it works. Powered USB, data, all as new.
So, I guess if this happens to you, do a PRAM reset and reboot a couple of times.
    Cheers
    Dom

  • Abnormal Shut-Down Sequence After Power Supply Replacement ???

Before the repair, there was a spinning wheel on the blue screen before the shut-down. But now the machine just cuts the power completely the moment the blue screen appears. Do you guys think that there is something to do with the new power supply ?
    Thanks for helping me !

  • Shut down right after power up

My iMac G5, which of course just left warranty, turned itself off today. Now, when I power it on, the screen comes on, and it starts to boot for 10-60 seconds and then shuts off, never at exactly the same place.
It does this over and over.
My SN does fall within the range of power problem iMacs.
What am I looking at? Any chance this is RAM?
    iMac G5 20 1.8   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I am having the exact same problem. My SN did fall within the range and I called apple and they said it is not covered. It will start up in single user mode and I ran fsck and still not working. Starts up progress spins for a bit and then it shuts down and restarts itself. It does this over and over. Anybody have an idea?

  • Ipad will just shut down and not power back on until it is plugged in

Ipad will just shut down and will not reboot until it is plugged in. Any suggestions??

I'm going to guess that your battery isnt just dead?
Have you tried a reset? Hold down the sleep and home keys, past when you see the red power down slider  and until you see the silver apple. Let it reboot and see if that helps.
If it won't hold a charge, make an appointment at your local apple store and have them take a look at it.

  • New iBook G4 - shuts down w/o power adapter

I helped set up a brand new G4 iBook for a friend (10.4) purchased today. When the power adapter is unplugged the computer immediately shuts down. The battery indicator shows 100% charge. What are the proper steps to diagnos/fix the problem? Or should they return it?

I would take it back. It could be that something as simple as resetting the PMU will take care of it. If that doesn't do it, this symptom could be a logic board problem (it was with mine).
Let Apple figure it out and/or have them replace it.
By the way, the iBook G4 Discussions can be found here. (This is the iBook G3 dual USB discussion area.)

  • Computer shuts down after disconnecting power

Help!  My son has purchased the Envy 15 and loves it BUT we have an issue with the battery.  He has both batteries connected and the laptop plugged in.  He unplugs the laptop - both batteries are at 100% and within a minute, it shuts off.  It doesn't shut down, it's like it suddenly doesn't have power.  The machine will reboot, on the batteries, no problem - but of course, windows hasn't been shut down, so its not a "graceful" reboot.  When looking at the battery power after, Battery #1 is at 100% and Battery #2 is not present.  It obviously has power as we can reboot without reconnecting the power.  It only appears to happen when the second battery is connected.  We are on the HP recommended power plan with no adjustments.
When I plug it back in, it still says there is no second battery present.
    Help?  Any ideas?
Plus, does anyone know if you can lock the function keys - he does a ton of gaming and uses the function keys, so the direct action keys are not a plus for him.
    thanks!
    Caroline

Sounds like battery #2 has a short. When the system detects a critically low battery, it is likely to devote all power to battery charge until the batery reaches 5% or so. Try each battery seperately. If no power at any time, remove the battery, disconnect the AC adapter. Press the power switch for about ten seconds. Then connect the AC adapter, let it boot, then install the battery and check the charging status. This resets the power manager. I think one battery id bad, but you will need to test them one at a time. Good luck.

  • IPhone 5 shuts down at 30% power

My iPhone 5 has recently started shutting down when it reaches 30% power on the indicator. If I power it back up it will show just less than 30% and work for a few minutes longer, but then shut down again. Another power up will then show a depleted battery. I've had this phone nearly two years and it's just begun to do this. I found a thread from 2013 that had a variety of "fixes" but none that seemed to work. I'm running OS7.0 and do not wish to upgrade, as I've had friends who upgraded and lost everything. Other than replacing the phone at full price (not really an option), any suggestions?

You don't lose data if you backup your phone on a regular basis.  You should be doing the same thing also.
Google on how to recalibrate your iphone battery.

  • MacBook shuts down on battery power at high cpu usage

I have a black MacBook core 2 duo (MacBook 2,1) that has always worked perfectly, but about 2 weeks ago it started to shut down without any notification.
When I am doing CPU intensive tasks I can hear a click and immediately after the computer turns off. This happens with different applications and even running Windows trough Boot Camp.
My first thought was that the computer shuts down itself to prevent overheating but since I only get the problem when running on battery power I rejected that theory.
In the other side my battery is working well, because it has only 183 charge cycles and the full capacity is 4169 mAh, meaning 82% of the capacity of a new one. With airport and bluetooth turned off and low brightness on the screen I can still read PDFs for more than 5 hours.
Another suspicious behavior is that last week, several minutes before the computer shut down, it couldn’t make any sound. I rebooted it and sound started working again. Maybe this is an independent problem but since they started together it can be related to the high CPU shut down one.
Has anybody seen this kind of behavior? Any idea about what is producing the problem?
    Thanks in advance

  • HP 630 shuts down seconds after power on

    HP 630, i3 processor, OS WIN7
Hello. I hope someone can hel me with this problem.
After pressing the power button the screen comes on and I can see the black screen with the HP logo in the middle and in the lower left corner ist says "Press the ESC key for startup menu". The boot does not go past this screen ans the notebook shuts down after 30 seconds.
What I have tried so far:
Removed HDD and RAM and reinserted them again and tried to boot.
Results: The same, shutdown after 30 sec.
Removed battery and power plug and pressed the power button for 30 sec. Then I connected the power (only) and tried to boot again.
    Results: The same.
    Tried to boot without HDD.
Results: Error message "Boot device not found..." and shutdown after 30 sec.
Booted into bios and set the defaults. I have to be quick because I have only 30 sec for making changes before it shut down again.
    Results: The same.
Tried to boot from live flash disk drive with linux mint.
Results: The flash drive is detected and I see the same black screen with the HP logo. It seems to me that the system freezes at this point bacause flash drive led stays on and I am unable to enter the boot menu anymore by pressing ESC key. After 30 sec.shutdown.
Any help is very apreciated. Thank you.

    Hello @Mainzer ,
Thanks for posting on the HP Forums!
I understand you are experiencing an issue with your notebook. However, since this is a commercial notebook, you should post your issue on the notebook board of the HP Enterprise Forums for a better answer.
