Shutting down causes a request to continue an update

When I shut down my imac, I frequently get a window asking if I want to continue my update (to what I don't know).  If I click "continue", I get a message saying it can not find a file that is needed for the update.  This file has a very long name, so I can't write it down before the system continues to shut down.
How do I diagnose this?
Thanks,
Jim

If the file is not listed in Software Update/App Store, check all your browsers download managers.

    Hi there, go in to the utilites of you applications folder and find "Mail" then go stop processes.
    If you cannot find Mail then open mail up and follow the process as above.

  • Do i have a virus? I get asked when shutting down do I want to continue or abort the installation

    Do i have a virus? I get asked when shutting down do I want to continue or abort the installation.
    I am not installing anything.

    You may have partially installed the "Genieo" or "InstallMac" ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it.
    Back up all data before proceeding.
    Malware is always changing to get around the defenses against it. In addition to the files listed in the support article, you may also have to remove the following in the same way:
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.Installer.completer.download.plist
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.Installer.completer.ltvbit.plist
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.Installer.completer.update.plist
    ~/Library/Application Support/IM.Installer/Completer.app
    One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those.
    After removing the malware, remember to reset your home page in all the web browsers affected, if it was changed.
    If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, then you may have one of the other kinds of adware covered by the support article. Follow the rest of the instructions in the article.
    If you find Apple's instructions too hard to follow, ask for an alternative that doesn't require you to trust a black-box application without knowing what it does.
    Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. Chances are you got it from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
    In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
    Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
              Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
    or
              Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
    if it's not already checked.

    Open Activity Monitor and see if you can identify any application that may be the culprit.  If so, click on it and then the "Quit Process' icon on the menu bar.

  • Lenovo Miix 2 10: Sleep and shut down causes restart

    I fairly recently ran into a problem with the Miix 2 10. It works perfectly fine otherwise, apart from two issues:
    1. I can't put the computer to sleep. Hitting the power button, or selecting sleep from the power menu, or waiting long enough for sleep to engage via power options causes the screen to turn black, the computer won't wake by pressing the power button, and after a bit (under a minute?) the Lenovo boot up screen shows and the computer boots up "normally". This happens no matter how sleep mode is engaged. Basically the same behavior also happens when I select Shut down from the power menu, the computer shuts down normally and then after a little bit (under a minute again) the computer boots up again. The only way to shut down the computer so that it'll stay down is to hold the power button down so long the computer shuts down forcibly. Or wait for the battery to run out...
    2. Almost no Windows updates will install. All of them fail with the following message: Code 80073712 Windows Update ran into a problem. I've searched high and low for a solution to the Windows Update problem, tried everything MS had to offer (short of factory reset or reinstall) and nothing has worked.
    Truth be told I'm mostly worried about the first problem, not so much the Windows Update one. The sleep issue essentially stops me from using my Miix 2 10 as a tablet at all, I have to treat it like an always on laptop, and I have to even run screensavers to prevent possible screen issues because it's always on ("turn off screen" seems to also shut down the computer). Our local Lenovo only supports corporate computers, servers and professional laptops, and as far as I can see I can't contact Lenovo US in any way other than phoning them, so I'm more than a bit stuck with this.
    As far as I can tell this is related to either BIOS or the CPU driver package. I installed the latest updates some time ago and afterwards this behavior came in, making it almost impossible to really use the unit. Should have known better than to update any drivers when everything was working fine...
    If anyone has any ideas that could help, I'm all ears. I've heard there are some BIOS settings related to power management that could cause this, but you can adjust absolutely nothing of any use whatsoever in the Miix 2's BIOS. It's completely useless when it comes to that. I'd really want to try and roll back the BIOS drivers, but that's not possible since they aren't available anywhere, so I think I'll just have to return the unit.
    EDIT: Just in case it matters, if I look into the Device Manager I can see that many if not most of the stuff running on the Intel driver package (the Baytrail processor driver package includes a lot of stuff like the camera drivers) seems to be saying something about the power states that may or may not be relevant: Power states D0 (full power) and D3 (Sleep) are listed as supported, and the power states are mapped as follows:
    S0 -> D0
    S1 -> Unspecified
    S2 -> Unspecified
    S3 -> Unspecified
    S4 -> D3
    S5 -> D3
    A couple of them, for example ACPI X86-based PC, say D3 to S1-3 as well.

    i think i find solution.
    after instal baytrail driver, without restart i instal gpu driver direct from intel
    https://downloadcenter.intel.com/search?keyword=Intel%C2%AE+HD+Graphics+for+Intel%C2%AE+Atom%E2%84%A...
    work fine for now...

  • Hard shut down causing restart error

    A prompt to do a software update froze my MacBook. Force quit didn't help, so I did a hard shut down. Now, the machine will power on, but as soon as I hear the startup tone, a black screen drops down with the following message: "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button." when I do this, I just get the startup tone and the same message every time. Im not familiar with the "Restart button." What can I do to get out of this loop, and what will I need to do once I do get past it?

    You are experiencing a Kernel Panic, as shown in Apple doc. #HT1392.

  • My macbook won't shut down.  Had MacDefender and followed all instructions for removal but still get told can't shut down cause their processes are running.  Any suggestions?

    I followed all directions and quit all processes, emptied trash etc.  When I try to shut down I get pop-ups telling me apps are running even though I quit them.  I can't install upgrades because I can't shut down.  Doing a hard reboot doesn't help at all.  Any suggestions?

    If any of the apps won't quit on you in future, try ti kill them in Terminal:
    killall Finder
    then hit enter
    If you don't know the official app name (how OS SX sees it), go to COMMAND_OPTION_ESCAPE and see the official name in the running app list.
    The power button method above works 100%, but will bypass saving of session states for all services, so your OS X could be unstable after reboot and won't remember some settings you had prior to shuting down. Use it only as a last resort.

  • Can't Log Out, Shut Down, or Restart after 10.5.2 update

    Since updating I've been unable to log out any user, though I can switch between users via fast user switching. Selecting Restart, Shut Down, or Log Out [User] makes any active windows become inactive, but does nothing else. (The same happens selecting restart from the system prefs or an updater/installer.) After the 10.5.2 update I had a major kernel panic that locked-up the whole machine and had to hard shut down. I've had several mini-panics since then, but the machine operates normally otherwise. I did a thorough Apple Hardware test and everything passed. None of the utilities I ran could find any issues. I am able to Restart and Shut Down via the Login Window (under the fast user switching menu). I have to enter an Admin account override, so I'm not sure if this is causing any system damage. I'm very frustrated with my very new computer. Any help or insights would be greatly appreciated.

    This is then not a permissions issue with your existing accounts since it is system wide.
    Your hope is that if you run Disk Utility Repair Disk Permissions would fix and Apple Installer installed files (the main system) permissions. Also do a Verify Disk to check for any underlying directory corruption. The safe boot means the issue is not extensions or fonts. There could still be a plugin somewhere screwing things up but it is unlikely.
    If repairing the system file permissions and downloading and re-applying the 10.5.2 combo update does not resolve the issue you have corrupt files in the system and need to reinstall the system.
    There is one more potential source and that is what are known as page faults. These originate with cache files which can't be loaded back as expected. This is a conflict issue and could be the source of the problem.
    You can manually dump the root and system cache but a better alternative is probably to download a program like Yasu. It is configurable, has a simple interface and will repair permissions and clean the cache.

  • Ipad shuts down when battery is at 20%, since updating to 7.0.4

    I've read a few posts about battery issues and I've tried everything from battery saving tips, to resets, to restoring my ipad. Nothing is working. My sister also has an ipad 2 and has exactly the same issue except hers shuts down at 35-45%. This is only since updating to iOS 7, possibly only since iOS 7.0.4.
    Can anyone help? Apple? Why can't we roll back a version any more?
    My ipad is out of warranty and I don't want to pay for a new battery when it seems to me to be a software issue...
    All replies appreciated.

    Could be the charger, cable or iPad. Plug the USB cable into your computer. It may say "Not Charging", however, it is charging slowly and will verify that the cable is good.
    Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
    The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W or 12W (5W on Mini) USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (2.5W, most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
    Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
    How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery
    http://www.macblend.com/how-to-calibrate-your-mac-iphone-or-ipad-battery/
    At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. • Sudden shut down battery problem, factory reset and SW update/repair did NOT help

    Hello everyone, i have a "sudden shut down problem" with my Xperia Z1 C6903 too. Sudden Shutdown always happens at about 70% for the first time, after been fully charged. I cant turn it on right afterwards but if i wait 1 min. it works. However sooner or later the phone, somewhere between the remaining battery, will repeatedly shut down again. I couldnt find out what triggers it and android battery test show that the battery is ok. I am not an expert with these devices, but i hope it is a software or calibration problem? There is a similar threat which points to the solution of using Sony PC Companion Software repair, i tryed it twice and it did NOT help! edit:I havent changed the device after PC Companion repair step, thus no other Apps are running and no energy managment has been configured (stamina mode) edit 2:hidden battery info * # * # 4 6 3 6 # * # * shows:...battery health: goodbattery voltage: 3969 mVbattery temperature: 36.6° C...is there a way which gives me more details than just "good"? And what does that even mean?

    Hi, I have exactly the same problem after upgtading my phone to lollipop. I tried repair from PC companion and facfory rest, but no luck.
    Do you think it is Because of the battery? Never had this problem before upgrading to lollipop. The other thing I notice is when the phone suddenly shutdown (baterry jump from 50-60% to 0%), I just need to plug in my charger and wait a moment before turning it on, then here is the problem.
    1. Sometimes the battery indicator shows 50% or slightly lower than before shutting down.
    2. The other times, it will show accordingly that the baterry is out (1% because it's charging)
    3. Most of the times, there is a message "android is upgrading...", when turning it on.
    Any idea how to solve this problem?

  • My touchsmart 600-1120 will not shut down. Is there a new bios update?

    I've worked on several Touchsmart systems - and this is the first time I've had this problem.  About 10 seconds after the system is completly shut down - it starts back up.  I've done all I can think of in the "power options" - and cleared the BIOS.  Nothing seems to help.  Perhaps a short in the switch?  I've noticed that several models of the 600 have a bios update to 5.12  - mine is 5.01.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
