Shutting down during sleep

My new iMac 21.5 is shutting down every time it goes to sleep. This is my second iMac as I replaced the first one that was doing the same thing!
Any ideas? I have an airport extreme, two WD hard drives and a USB HUB atached. All are plugged into a brand new APC surger protector/battery backup 450/4550.

I suspect your problem is one of the peripherals. You need to eliminate the peripherals one by one to see which is causing the problem.

  • Mac Pro shuts down during sleep

My Pro sometimes shuts down during sleep.  Nothing will wake the machine and it it not accessible by another other computer on the network.  It has to be manually re-started using the button on the back of the computer.  There are no error messages on re-start.
I have reset the SMC and PRAM but it makes no difference.
    Any ideas?

Perhaps some third-party software that you had previously installed needs to be updated to be compatible with the latest OS X updates.
Perhaps some hardware component is experiencing problems; even the best hardware fails occasionally.

  • 1st Gen iMac G5 doesn't turn on--after shutting down during sleep

So I bought an IMAC G5 17/1.6/256/80/COMBO when they first came out. Within the first year and a half I had to get two logic boards replaced. Fast foward to about 4 months after Applecare ran out and the machine began shutting down instead of going to sleep. Then, last week--nothing--wouldn't even turn on. So I unplugged it and plugged it back in and it started fine. Two days ago same thing only now it won't turn on at all. So I took off the cover, internal power button doesn't work--tried reseting SMU and still nothing. LED 2 doesn't come on at all, but LED 1 isn't constant, it flickers (don't know if that's normal). So I assume it's either logic board or power supply.
Now, I've read the Repair Extension program about this model, but unfortunately it only goes out three years (curious because that's how long my AppleCare lasted). And I found it odd that after getting it fixed twice it would still have these defective parts. So I called the support line trying to explain the situation. After being on hold for 20 min. the guy came back and said my warranty was up so I couldn't even talk to someone on the phone about the problem. I could get it fixed, but it was going to cost me.
Anyone have any advice? I was going to get another computer later this year (although will probably change my mind about getting another Mac after this experience), and I know fixing this one will be pretty expensive--something I can't afford right now. Does anyone know the rationale behind a) three year cutoff and b) Apple not informing owners that they'd better get it checked out before period runs out. And I guess as a last resort if it winds up being too expensive to fix, anyone know if people buy broken IMACs? Talk about frustration, I didn't even have to go through this type of nonsense when I used Windows.
    Thanks for your help.

Welcome to Discussions - try calling Apple Customer Service 800-767-2775 and politely telling them your tale, then ask for a fix or a new computer.

  • My Mac Pro Shuts down during sleep

Well I have a variation on what others are experiencing with their machine.
1- I put the mac to sleep. Or it goes to sleep when i's supposed to.
2- I let it sleep at least a few minutes…
3- when I press the space bar, the following happens:
    - the mac responds immediately (see below)
    - the fans kick in just as when you start it from shut down with power button
    - the startup screen appears and everything after this point is the same as a cold boot.
I'm puzzled, but this is more an info message than a call for help.
    My setup:
2.8 GHz 8 core Jan 2008 mac pro.
4x2 GB RAM from OWC (667 Mhz)
2x1 GB RAM (factory) reseated to follow the RAM arrangements guideline.
    8800 GT video Card.
4x 750 GB Seagate drives. formatted as two RAID 0 pairs. One of the two holds the OS and apps.
The only other thing present is the OWC/Newertech S-ATA adapter that essentially brings the 2 unused SATA ports to the back of the compouter. Nothing is plugged to this for now.
    Software:
OS 10.5.2 ans all updates applied.
for the moment the only non-apple app installed is the temperature monitor suite.
Hope this tells something to others. Will send this info as "feedback" to apple.

Ok so my g5 died...still complaining. Should have had apple replace it while still under apple care.
Had to buy an intel mac which has limited compatibility but is fast, durable.... i doubt it. I was sold on the g4s before i switched to apple. Never owned one bought a g5 to switch from pc for audio recording. Durability was my goal, didn't think i would ever need mac pro.
Mac pro reboots after it has been asleep. This is not a ram error. It is a design flaw. Their are many things that cause sleep issues which seem to be very complicated. This problem is sold with your mac.
The first thing i did before i even opened the box was read apple discussions on this issue and other bug reports. There are lots of reports on this particular issue as i was familiar with it the first time it happened to me which was maybe the second time i put the computer to sleep. To be honest why there hasn't been an immediate bug fix is disheartening. All i got to say is typical. I think i will be having some very stern words with apple tomorrow. Over all dissappointment in all departments regarding apple- durability, compatibility, backwards compatibility, customer support, and their inability to stand behind their flagship machines. I guess they're just a second rate circuit city brand. This is not only a rant.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Galaxy Tab 10.1 Shuts down during sleep

My Galaxy Tab 10.1 is shutting down on its own after several or more hours of not using it. When I plug it in it reports 100% charge, and pressing the power button to 10 seconds causes it to boot up just fine.
I read in one forum that performing a factory corrects the problem, but that's a lot of work that I hope to not have to perform.
Anyone else see this and come up with a solution?

    Hello jkletch,
Thanks for posting your concern. I have researched your issue with the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and have found your best option is to perform a had reset. I recommend, prior to doing this, that you back up your information since this will remove all data. To perform a hard reset you can simply follow these steps:
From the home screen select Apps.
    From All Tabs select Settings.
    Select Privacy.
    Select Factory Data Reset.
    Select Reset Tablet.
    Select Erase Everything.
Let us know how this works out for you. Have a great evening!

  • Shuts down during sleep.

so the other week my imac started doing a funny thing. either i'll put it to sleep, or it will put itself to sleep after a period of time; but when i return to my imac it has shut off. it isn't responsive to the keyboard, mouse, or power button. the only way to reset it is to manually unplug and replug it in. when i turn it back on, all of the fans spin up (loudly) and it takes far too long to finish booting. it remains at the gray screen for several minutes. i zapped the pram. reintalled the original os (panther). nothing seems to be helping. i read in a previous post about several imac owners having similar power issues, but my serial number doesn't match the power supply issues that apple has covered. its no longer under warranty, considering i got it when it came out back in november of 2004. everytime i have to wait 10 minutes for me computer to boot up i get more and more irritated and lose more and more respect for apple (not that i'd ever conseider going back to a pc). please help.
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Hi there,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Sorry to hear of the problems you are having. I presume with all the other things you have tried, you have verified and repaired permissions and run something like Cocktail or Onyx?
Are you sure your serial number doesn't fall within the one's Apple offered an extended warranty on? The reason I ask is because I bought mine the same time as you (Rev A) and I too had sleep issues, amongst other things, with my G5 iMac. Instead of going to sleep it would restart. I rang Apple and I was still within the warranty period (just)and after going through a whole load of their suggestions - like the one's you have already done, they gave me a number and said to take it into an authorised Apple repair shop.
I did this and it turned out to be both the Power Supply Unit and the motherboard. Both were replaced under the extended warranty. It does sound like you are having PSU problems, can you take it to a repair place and just get it looked at?
Sorry not to be of more help, perhaps someone else will come up with more suggestions.
    Cheers
    NikkiG

  • N200 shuts down during boot

    Dear Lenovo,
I have a problem with my N200 laptop. Notebook shuts down during boot. Sometimes it is immediately after "Lenovo screen", sometimes it is when Vista logo appears. I found out that this is always when notebook is "cold". It does't matter if I want to switch on my notebook or if I want to restore it from hibernation or sleep mode. Next thing is that it always crashes when fan starts work at full tilt (I checked the fan but it is clear). When notebook starts correctly then it works without problems. Usually I have to switch it on about three times then it is OK. This problem takes about 2 weeks. I have my laptop about 7 month. Do you have any ideas how to solve this problem?
And another thing - I forget to send registration card to Lenovo and now I am afraid that I will be without warranty. Can I send it still now?
Thank you for answer and sorry for my English.
    Gabi

Yes, problem with the video card sounds plausible! Any not so successful updates recently? It is sometimes to make a good uninstall, which is required to make a good install.
4in1 drivers should - esp. with W98 and ME - be installed while in SafeMode and with all autostarting programs disabled, for example Antivirus and utilities.
Else, since you have a damaged regedit, I would reinstall Windows. You might have done something for example an upgrade or new install the registry, not healthy, has made a note of. Some utilities also overwrite and change system files without good results.

  • IMac (3.4gHz Intel Core i7) shuts down when sleeps, then won't restart

Just bought a brand new 27" iMac (3.4gHz Intel Core i7) which shuts down when sleeps, then won't restart (ie completely dead).
In order to restart, I have to unplug the power cord from the computer, hold power key down for 10secs, replug in and it then starts up. I returned to the store and they spent a couple days letting it go to sleep etc and overnight and for them it was fine. Woke up no problems. They returned it to me yesterday.
So I set it all up again, left it overnight and this morning it was dead again. So now it leaves me to wonder if it's something I have plugged into it.
I have a new Seagate 3TB external hard drive hooked up using USB3.0. This is plugged directly into the back of the computer.
I also have a powered USB hub plugged into the computer which has regular USB stuff such as printer, graphics tablet and another external hard drive (this one is older LaCie 500gb, and have put it into a new USB 3.0 case as well for the arrival of the new iMac (this had an old firewire hard drive case). However this hard drive is switched off at the case and is not being used.
I believe it could possibly be the Seagate 3TB disk causing this problem, but it works fine during the day while I am using the computer, it's just when I either leave it at lunch time to go to a meeting or walk etc or overnight that I come back and it has shut down....leaving me to believe that it's due to the computer going to sleep.
Has anyone else had a similar problem with a Seagate drive? Today I'm conducting an experiment and heading off for lunch with both hard drives unhooked. If I come back and the computer wakes up from a click of the mouse or keyboard as it should, I will plug in one hard drive at a time and re-test. I will leave the Seagate for last, as I don't think it is the old LaCie disk (which is off).
For reference sake, I also have a NAS running off my network through Airport Extreme etc and have my old iMac hooked up to the network too, but don't believe this is the problem.
Initially I did put in some after market RAM (another 8GB) and though that might be the problem, but I removed and it still reacted the same way (plus store I bought it from again booted up fine and woke up fine at their shop after I had taken RAM out too).
Will keep this post updated with my next test (letting computer sleep without either hard drive in), but keen to hear if anyone has had any similar experiences with Seagate disks/cases and the new iMacs.
    Cheers,
    Kristin

    Hey kristinandmike,
I had a similar problem shortly after I bought my 27" iMac. Here is an excerpt from my discussion:
"As BDAqua suggested, I started the process of elimination by shutting down the externals and just leaving up one of the USB drives and using the computer until time to shut it off. After eliminating 2 of the 3 drives I figured it had to be the last one. That drive is a Seagate GoFlex Desk version that allows different bases with differing connectivity. I had previously used FW800 to connect but had switched to USB3 on the new computer. I went ahead and got a Thunderbolt to FW adaptor cable and switched this drive back to Firewire rather than USB3. So far so good."
For some reason the Seagate I was using didn't agree with the USB3 on the Mac.

  • Mac shuts down in sleep mode.

This just started to happen to my mac pro quad intel running the latest SNOW software. My mac shuts down in sleep mode. I tried to zap pram, but it ill not allow me to do this.
I also check the internal battery using a small program and its a full charge. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?
    Thanks,

    godlovestodance,
your Mid 2012 needs 1600 MHz memory modules. Is your currently installed RAM of this variety?
In your current setup, is it your 1 TB HDD or your 256 GB SSD that is in the optical drive bay?
One thing you can try is this: boot your MacBook Pro into Recovery mode by holding down a Command key and the R key as it starts up. Once the Mac OS X Utilities menu appears, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Does it still crash because of an extended sleep?

  • Computer shuts down during render/prerender

This was not my original problem but it has occured before and I know it will occur again.
My computer shuts down for no reason when I try to render or prerender video in Adobe Premiere Pro CS4. From what I can tell it is a general issue with premiere that I am having. I have tried multiple video formats, multiple video lengths, and multiple rendering options and I am still getting random shut downs during rendering.
Here are some specs for my computer which is a laptop:
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate (64 bit OS)
Proccessor: Intel Core 2 Duo @ 3.0 ghz
    Ram: 8 gigs of it
    Video: Nvidia Geforce 9600M GT
1 Hard Drive w/ 280 gb of space
As a recap.... My exact problem is that during the rendering or pre rendering proccess my computer simply shuts down as in it turns off.
I can also add that the computer does act strangely leading me to believe that theres some hardware or software incompatibility. While it is rendering I can hear the CPU fan pick up which is usually normal for any rendering application but what I noticed was that it doesnt stop speeding up. Its like if it was going into an overload and I can confirm that at its peak, the computer shuts down.
To add troubles... whenever I pre render any video and it succesfully renders.... Premeire will hang up really really bad if I try to play the pre rendered preview. In otherwords when you preview a video that it pre rendered it usually plays smooth and everything is fine. After I pre render something though and play it I can tell its locking up because the timeline bar is really jumpy and the video playback skips also.
This is the problem I would really love fixed. I usually have to button smash my keyboard until I lock premiere up and then once it unfreezes itself i can preview my work smoothly. This is however like a good 5 mins of my time trying to get the preview to play smoothly though so its really hurting how fast I can work.
If anyone can help me out I would greatly appreciate it. I will be trying to run the same stuff on my older laptop and observe the results. I personally think CS4 is incompatible with windows 7.

If you have a recent nVidia driver installed, you might want to check to see if you have either of these two modules loaded - check in the nVidia console:
PhysX, or 3D Stereovision. If you have them, definitely disable 3D Stereo, and test. If no improvement, disble PhysX and test.
Also, try adjusting your Hardware Acceleration. If Max, set to Min and test. If Min, set to Max and test. If either helps, try incrementing up, or down, until it no longer helps.
Last, check your OpenGL settings. If ON, turn OFF. If OFF, turn ON.
It appears that you have a laptop. Is that correct?
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Macbook Shuts Down During Video Playback

My computer has begun to shut down unexpectedly when I am watching a movie. I watch about 20-30 mins of a show/movie/other video and my computer will shut down completely, whether it is plugged in or not. My computer is an early 2008 macbook, 4.1, running osx lion. My battery condition is "replace soon" and my fan has gotten quite loud over the past year or so. Any ideas on how I might fix this problem? New Battery? New charger? Internatal cleaning?
Thank you very much to everyone.

    Hello,
I am having this very same issue. It shuts down during startup. I can boot into Windows, and using the Leopard startup disc, Disk Utility could not work any magic. I do not have a second Mac or access to one for any backup purposes. I have no idea what else to try, does anyone know something besides backing up through firewire, on how I can either save my computer's data or resurrect the drive? Thank you for your help.

  • Re: Restoring windows after sudden shut down during updating

    Hi everyone,
Last night I was updating my windows on my Toshiba laptop, however, my laptop had a sudden shut down during the updating process.
Now when I start my laptop, I am prompted that a system error occurred and I have to insert my windows CD to continue. I never got a windows CD, and nor have I made a recovery disc yet, so is there any possible way for me to log into windows again? I am using windows Vista.
    Any suggestion would be grateful.
    Thanks in advance

    hi dDk,
what is the first rules of using a computer?
*never touch a running system* and of course: *read the f... manual* and *make backups often*
ok this was a bit hard... but this is a common failure to make an update without saving....
now lets see what we can do....
    - i assume that there is no possibility to start in safe mode...
    - hdd recovery is not possible...
    - you have neither a systemdisk of vista nor a system backup
now you are in operators hell....
    - see a servicepartner and ask for assistance, for a small fee he is able to setup your original system
    - get a vista/win7 istallation cd and install it, be aware you loose your hdd backup funktion!
    - try to repair with a "system-on-a-disc" like winpe or bartpe
    - try to make the hidden recovery partition visible to a os booted from cd and run recovery agent from there
if you killed your recovery partition.... bad luck
