Shutting Down Issues

I installed Leopard weeks ago on my MacBook, and have since update to v. 10.5.1. Since the original install (and still), I have had a problem shutting down. When I do, my desktop clears and I am left with my background image. A few seconds later, the 'working' timer appears at the bottom of the screen, and spins constantly, and the MacBook doesn't power off (I have left it in this state for hours before eventually turning it off).
This doesn't happen every time - maybe about 50% of occasions. Can anyone help!?!

Count me in!
I'm experiencing the same problems. In addition, SL becomes really sluggish. I did a fresh install, so there shouldn't be any incompatible plugins. Sometimes, killing Finder helps as it seems to prevent the computer from shutting down. Occasionally, other applications are also not accessible over a certain period of time, see also this thread:

Does this also apply to your problem?

Can I creat a new shutdown setting.. scince the registry got erased?? It was proberly.. Spybot or adware that erased it... thats the only was i could explain this.
So what are my option? re-install windows? or creat a new shutdown setting??

If you are not bothered by the shutdown problem, then you should leave it alone.
If you are willing to risk and re-installing doesn't takes up your time then you can try altering the registry.
If you think that you are already being bother by many other problems rather than this and you have the time to do a clean shave, by all means go for full format as a housekeeping.

  • Random shut down issue

So I have a Macbook 13" 1.83 Ghz Core Duo, running 10.6.2 with 2gb of (user installed) RAM. Minus a defective battery issue last year (the battery swelled to the point where my trackpad wouldn't work) which apple replaced for free out of warrantee, I have had no issues.
Out of the blue, I've been experiencing random shut down issues of sorts. If I have the computer plugged in it works fine. Sometimes though, the computer will randomly shut down after being unplugged. I tried reseting the SMU but it didn't seem to do anything.
Another odd thing - I calibrated the battery with the computer on an incline on my desk to keep it cool in case it was an issue of over heating. The computer charged fully, and then drained it's charge to 0% and went to sleep as it should.
But once I charged it up about halfway again, unplugged it, and put it on my lap, it shut off within 2 minutes. I'm well out of my warrantee so any user suggested diagnostic tips would be appreciated! I've included the battery info for good measure (btw the battery is not even a year old).

  • Please wait for the group policy client - shutting down issues

    Hi
I have issues with shutting down machines. When machine is connected to company's LAN everything works fine. However, if machine is connected to VPN - Juniper NC - 1 hour or more it always hangs when it is shutting down. When I shut down the machine
(verbose mode on), first stage is:
Please wait for the system Event Notification service.
    This ends exactly
    after 3 minutes. Next stage:
Please wait for the group policy client windows 7
...is never timed out (even after few hours). Machine never shuts down.
In Application logs there are always these 4 events when machine is unsuccessfully shutting down:
6005: The winlogon notification subscriber <Sens> is taking long time to handle the notification event (Logoff).
4627: The COM+ Event System timed out attempting to fire the Logoff method on event class {D5978650-5B9F-11D1-8DD2-00AA004ABD5E} for publisher  and subscriber .  The subscriber failed to respond within 180 seconds.
The display name of the subscription is "ISensLogon2". The HRESULT was 80010002.
6006: The winlogon notification subscriber <Sens> took 180 second(s) to handle the notification event (Logoff).
6005: The winlogon notification subscriber <GPClient> is taking long time to handle the notification event (Logoff).
Sens is timed out after 3 minutes while there is no 6006 event for GPClient and machine is stuck there for ages (Please wait for the group policy client
stage). I noticed in System logs that machine always hangs if there is this error
5783: The session setup to the Windows NT or Windows 2000 Domain Controller \\server for the domain X is not responsive.  The current RPC call from Netlogon on \\machine to \\server has been cancelled.
I made a group policy log and below you can see part of GPSVC log when machine is unsuccessfully shutting down:

I tried with signing out from VPN before shutting down machine, I even switched off WiFi but machine still hung. If i tried to get GP results before shutting down machine it takes ages and it is stuck in "Getting the user name" stage.
Gpupdate /force never updates policy (It stops at Updating Policy...). I tired with installing different hotfixes which did not resolve the issue. I never have any
issues with logging in, no GP scripts are applied when user is logging off or on, no roaming profiles. The only issue is when machine needs to be shut down.
I excluded 1 machine from GP and left it on VPN for a few hours, several times. It always shuts down successfully. I applied GP back one by one and the one which is presumably causing an issue is Avecto which adds admin rights when VPN application
    starts (event 100):
Process started with admin rights added to token.
     Command Line: "C:\Users\User\AppData\Roaming\Juniper Networks\Setup Client\JuniperSetupClient.exe"

I guess there is a DNS issues when machine is on VPN which leads that GP cannot be applied / updated. Not sure if or why Avecto would have an impact on this. When machine is trying to shut down it still somehow thinks it is connected to DC. What
I also noticed are several explorer crashes while machine is on VPN.
Does anyone have same issues? All machines are Dell with Juniper NC (VPN).
    Thanks,

    Hi,
According to event log, Winlogon process takes a long time to handle logoff event. That's to say winlogon process is waiting for response to logoff.
According to your description after, this problem is most probably caused by Avecto. You can try to disable or uninstall it temporarily for test.
To make further troubleshoot with this problem, you can try to use WPT (Windows Performance Tool) to make troubleshoot.

  • Mac pro 3,1 and ati hd5870 overheating (shut down issues)

Hi all I have an early 2008 mac pro 16gig ram and the ati hd 5870 on dual boot windows 7 64bit, it has been running brill for about a year but then I started getting random shut downs in windows and the occasional one in macOS 10.7 I upgrade to 10.8 loved some of the new features but the shuts down became unbareable in both OS I would also just get black screen on startup and have to do forced reboots etc.
If I took out the hd5870 and put back inthe original ati card everything worked as normal except the orginal card isnt supported in fcpX and I need this for my work when I take out the hd5870 card it is boiling hot so I have done some research and it appears I am not the only one with over heating issues.
I have seen there are several third party graphic card cooling options but mac being mac I dont seem to have any free additional power outputs to power a third party cooling device, so my question is this
1, is anyone selse having these issues and has figured out a way to stop the shut downs
    2. has anyone or does anyone know how i can keep my card cool?
inside my mac is squeaky clean and so is the graphics card.
ps, typical it is just outside the 1 year warranty and the card is so expensive i didn;'t want to buy 1 every single year

    @ Hatter
Yup prior card was 8800gt and new card is nice and snug.  10.8 was not clean install, was upgrade.  Ill try safeboot although not sure how/why that will fix any long term issues i have (which are random).. Trying 10.7 i had the same issues and was hoping that 10.8 wld fix.. Why go back to 10.6.8 when it should work in todays day and age? :(
    @ Grant
Have done that now although not sure why something like this is not in the owners manual?!
Thanks for the help/suggestions so far guys, much apprec.. Feels like my pro is dying on me slowly but surely...
    Any other bright ideas?

  • Speaker and Shut down Issues

I am on my 3rd DROID... the first two I would be talking to someone and they couldnt hear me (bad mouthpiece speaker) which verizon gladly replaced with a "like new" replacement. So on Droid #3 in 5.5 months... and its starting to do the same thing and it also has just completely shut down in the middle of a call. I couldnt do anything and eventually just had to remove the battery and then restart it totally. (no i havent dropped it or anything)... was wondering is anyone else having this issue?
I took the phone to the store the other day and they say they have to be able to duplicate it  (so when this happens I have to run to verizon and hope they are open and the problem is still ongoing?) Anyway... others having these issues? Any solutions out there? Thanks!!

If soft reset does not fix issue can do a Master reset on device. If still having issues can call Tech Support and have do a VLR refresh on device need to call from a different phone number is 1-800-922-0204 option 2.

  • Shut down issue on 27" iMac running Windows XP using VMWare Fusion 3

I'm running Windows XP on a 27" iMac using VMWare Fusion 3. When I try to shut down the Mac system without using Windows, a dark (not black) screen covers the screen from top to bottom and presents me with a screen, stating in multiple languages that I must press the power button for 5 seconds and then restart the Mac. Then the iMac will close normally.
However, if I run both the Mac system and Windows, and then close Windows, VMFWare Fusion 3, followed by the Mac system, the iMac shouts down normally.
What's going on? Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone have a solution?

I run XP under Fusion 3 and have not seen this issue. What you are getting is a Kernel Panic. There should be more information in your console logs about the reason.
Here is some info on KPs to help you.

  • Shut Down Issues

Hi, I'm running a 2.6GHz intel imac which ive had for a couple of months now, relatively (:S) trouble free. The only problems i've had arise from software update.
The first issue i had came up when i tried to install a Mac OSX update, which said it needed to restart to complete, which it then did so, finder quit and all that was left was the installing window and progress bar. It basically always got stuck at the same point, wouldn't finish installing and I had to manually shutdown :S (I'm using disk utility afterward every time to check for problems). I ended up having to manually download the software from the apple website which worked fine.
At the moment, I'm in the middle of another serious issue, I recently used software update again for a couple of installs, here's where it really starts going wrong: it says I need to restart, which i say do now. At this point it doesn't close down all applications and turn off, it eventually just says 'Logout has timed out because the application {Software Update/Firefox/Finder, anything basically} failed to quit'. Even if I go through every open application and manually quit them, then click restart or shut down again, it either says the same thing about Finder, which obviously i can't quit, or the command bar at the top of the screen disappears as it would when turning off, but the dock remains fully functional. This has happened EVERY time i try to shut down since the update, and i actually can't turn the iMac off except manually (which i really don't want to be doing).
Sorry about the long winded description, can ANYONE help me out?

Thanks. I'll try that... I hope it works!

  • X201 - New Shut Down Issue

    Hello,
Before anyone shouts I have read through the current ongoing issue with x201s randomly shutting themselves down.
    My issue is slightly different;
I've created an image using KBOX2000 (image consists of Windows XP SP3, IE7, Office 2003 all latest Windows/Microsoft updates). Once the image is downloaded, sysprep runs, the laptop successfully joins the DOMAIN and everything seems fine. However, if I try to shut down or restart the laptop the window appears informing me that Windows in shutting down, the screen then goes blue and stays blue (waited for over an hour !). I have to physically powerdown the laptop using the power button.
I've since tried installing some recommended updates after running TVSU, but every time these installation fails. An option is given to me to "install manually" but clicking on this link does nothing.
Has anyone experienced this issue ?
    Many Thanks,
    Steve

Sounds like you have an application or program or windows explorer itself not shutting down properly.
Check the event viewer in system tools, software environment, might give you a clue.
The events in there that have to do with windows not shutting down properly might be because of you having to manually having to shut it down. Focus on anything having to do with programs or applications not shutting down properly.
Right before you shut it down next time, open task manager and see if there is anything under applications that is still running.

  • Powerbook 12 Random shut down issue

Hello, I have a 12" PB with 1Ghz G4 and 752 RAM installed, and OSX 10.4.8. Lately I have been experiencing serious problem with random shut down. Also the battery is not holding its charge properly. Here are the summary of the problems, I am wondering if others also have this issue.
    1. Battery problem. The battery can no longer hold its charge, when it is 100% full, I can only use it for 30 mnts at most. I bought the computer refurbished from Apple in Dec 2003. It has performed flawlessly until a couple months ago. The battery cycle is only 85, but the amount of charge is around 500 ish. I have been trying to discharge it and use it, but it has not helped at all. I zapped the PRAM of the laptop, and it helped a little by making it last 1 hour-ish with 1200 amount of charge. (In comparison my latest macbook pro holds 5500 and last around 3 hours). Unfortunately this battery serial number is not eligible for the exchange program for a new battery.
Is the battery old, and need to be replaced? even when its cycle is only 85?
    2. The second issue I am having is random shutdown. Occasionaly the computer will shut down randomly right after I start it or restart. After I restart it, the desktop will give me a message that the date of the computer was set back, to 1969. I would be able to work for a couple minutes before it shutting down again. I suspect this has something to do with the battery? If I take the battery out, I don't have this problem again. Or is it a motherboard issue? that something is a bit loose inside that I am not aware of?
I still have my Apple Care warranty, should I take the computer to the Apple Genius Bar to have them fix it? Thank you for your help and input, I really appreciate it.

I am thinking about the same thing, I should just get it fixed while it is still under the warranty. Does anyone know if the battery is also under the warranty and they will replace it?

  • Random shut down issues and more, apple recieved puter today, on hold

Ok so i have all the signs of a bad logic board or messed up puter. Mooing, random shut downs, dies during screen saver, and dies when lid is closed. I sent unit in yesterday, they got it today. Website sai on hold for infomation. So I gave them a call. They said they reseated the ram and its working and what else was wrong. I told then the mac genius did this twice and did all the other reset, then i got it home and it died again. There gonna start running more tests on it, i told her to tell the tech of the terminal thing to do to cause shut downs. ANd i told her of this post. She was extreamly nice to me and said there going to take care of me. they have had it for one afternoon, so i cant yell yet. I did ask that they replace the unit and send me a new one, she said they will run a more tests and go from there. I pointed her towards this forum as im sure many of you have and she said there going to and have been checking it out. So I guess there ontop of the issue. My bigest fear was getting the unit back andhaveing same problems. But hey thats what customer service is for so ill give applecare there fair chance first. Ill keep ya updated.

    here another scientist.
Firmware is reversible by reflashing it ... it just
need another set of istruction in binary package.
My ISSUE is related ONLY with firmware,
    mathematically.
Actually that's only partially true. It's only reversible by reflashing if someone has released the "reflash" package, which Apple has not. And so long as the changes it made allow a rollback of sorts. Many firmware updates will very clearly state that they can not be removed or undone. So... in your case, the previous poster was correct... it is impossible, through software to reflash your MacBook firmware
Go ahead and try to even reload the firmware, your MacBook knows it is already updated and will not allow the firmware to be reflashed.
Please, put your energy towards some other project, the SMC Firmware update, no matter how "coincidental" the timing of your RSD was, is not the root cause of the RSD.
BTW - I will echo the same comments about your experience with the so called Apple Genius, he's a tool
Call Apple or go to the Store and speak with someone else, in fact ask the Apple Genius if he is familar with the MacBook Random Shutdown. If he is not, ask to speak with one that is. The Apple Genius I spoke with was indeed familar with the problem and was simply great in processing my repair. Every instance so far has been related to a hardware problem.
    Good luck

  • 13' MacBook Pro Sleep/Random Shut Down Issues

I purchased a new 13' MacBook Pro about 7 months ago before my first semester of college. Until last week, everything has run at a squeaky clean pace, with no technical issues. Last week, I noticed that my MBP was going into sleep mode and simply shutting down after a about half an hour of sleeping. I dont recall it ever doing this before. If I leave the screen closed, I can open the computer and hit the power button and I will be restored back to the screen I was originally working on, however, if my MBP falls asleep while open, it shuts down eventually and when I hit the power button, it completely reboots the system with no saved position. I thought this was strange, but my MBP has now formed the habit of shutting down without my promting at various occasions. This shutting down is not occurring at very frequent intervals but it is still a problem.
    Any assistance would be appreciated!

    Try this:
    Reset the PRAM:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379?viewlocale=en_US
It's been recommended you wait for the third chime.
There are also a couple of plists you can try removing. These are in Finder in Macintosh HD:
    /Library/Preferences/System Configuration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist

  • Satellite P200-143 shut down issues

When I shut down my computer, while on the mains, the computer shuts down normally but a minute later, automatically restarts.
However, on battery it shuts down as it should.
I've checked my power settings, and they are all fine.
So I was wondering if anyone knew what I could do.
I have been shutting down by keeping the power button pressed, as it seems to be the only way.

I have a problem with my Satellite P200-144. Every time I plug it into the mains, it lasts about twenty minutes, and then cuts out. The time period is always the same, and it only ever happens when plugged into the mains, it will quite happily run on the battery until it runs dry.

  • Shut Down issue

Can any body help me out with my problem? When I want to shut down the laptop computer it takes me to the shutting down screen and then it stops responding Im running XP Home which is already on the hard drive.
    Please can some one help?

    Hi
I am pretty sure that it is simply an operating system problem. I assume that there is an ACPI driver defect and the OS is not able to shut down the unit. It is not easy to repair and in my opinion the only possible solution is operating system reinstallation.
Please use the recovery CD if you have one. On this way the unit will be clean preinstalled.
    Bye
