Shutting down MBP

I have read that Apple recommends only shutting down your system when it will not be used for a few days? Is this correct?
Why?
This is my first MBP, but with previous Windows laptops Ive always shut down when not in use - even if its just for a few hours.
With the MBP I tend to shut down overnight....

It's more like there's no reason to shut down the machine. Even if it's not connected to power, with a full and new battery a MacBook can remain in sleep mode for up to a week, so if you're going to use it tomorrow morning there's no reason to shut it down.
There are in fact several reasons to not shut it down.
When you shut down your computer, you must wait for it to start back up and log in. If you simply let it sleep, what you have in the morning is an "instant-on" computer: Just wake it and you are on the network and ready to go. The Unix system that Mac OS X is based on is designed for constant use so you can run it for weeks or months. While other people complain about their computer's boot times, if you don't have to boot the computer your startup time is zero.
Also, when working on a project I usually have many windows arranged in several open apps. If I was to shut down, all those windows and apps must be closed, and when you start up again, all those apps must be relaunched and the project document windows re-opened and re-arranged. This probably adds up to hours of time over a year, and what a pain! Why put up with that?
There is also the question of caches. You will find that the slowest application launch is the first time you launch it after a restart. If you exit the app and start it again, you will find the second instance (and the third etc.) takes less time to start the app. This is because OS X is caching the application code. When you shut down, the cache is discarded, and you're back to the first-time slow start. So the more you shut down, the more you get to experience the slow, un-cached first-time app launches.
I sleep my MacBook Pro at night, and in the morning, not only do I have instant-on, but everything I was working on is exactly as I left it, and my frequently-used apps start instantly. I've gone on cross-country business trips where I never shut down the laptop during the entire week until I get home, because sleep is very reliable. And there is no need to wait for startup when I just want to check something quickly when on the move.
That's why it's recommended that you sleep instead of shut down.
You do want to shut down your MacBook if you will not use it for several days, because sleep mode will eventually drain the battery and you might lose unsaved work, even though there is a Safe Sleep feature.

  • Can overheating shut down MBP?

I have a new (late 2008) MBP 15 (2.53/4g/320hd). Please excuse the long story but I'm not sure what's important to know here. I was using the Boot Camp program to create the needed partition for Windows. About 30% through the formatting process the computer turned itself off! Just shut down. I picked it up and it was incredibly HOT on the upper part of the bottom (not the battery area). As a newbie, it took a lot of checking around to figure out what to do with a machine that now did nothing at startup except give me a black screen with a flashing cursor at the top left. I was finally able to get help so that I could get a disk start, and have gone through some steps to where I now have the OS back on and running. My concern is that I wasn't using any program except the formatting cycle, and it was almost too hot to put on my lap! Is that what shut the unit off (not to mention playing havoc with the disk)? Have I got a bigger problem with the CPU or the fan? I see a lot of comments about heat and am now concerned. (And this is without any heavy duty processing yet!) Thanks for any insight.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You might try running the extended version of the Apple Hardware Test to check for any problems with the thermal sensors or the fans. You can also check fan speed using iStatPro. I believe that your fans should idle at around 2000 RPM, and should speed up to 6000 RPM if the computer starts getting too warm. It almost sounds like your fans are not speeding up or maybe not running at all.
    Good luck!

  • Closed display lid shuts downs MBP

Recently migrated to a New Macbook Pro but now when I close the display lid the MacBook Pro shuts down. It doesn't go to sleep. No flashing LED. Light goes out. I checked system preferences>energy saving but cannot find an option to set when lid closes to put computer to sleep or shut down. I've checked the manuals and help but only refers to the system preferences>energy saving settings which doesn't address this issue. Is there someplace where this option is set? Or is there something to reset to return to normal default sleep mode when lid is closed?
reboot to start - no sleep

Hi, oag. If the machine is shutting down completely and immediately when you close the display, that's not an option, it's a fault. You can't choose to have it do that, and it shouldn't do it under any circumstances. I would make a Genius Bar appointment to have the machine evaluated, and probably repaired or replaced.

  • MBP (Mid-2012) Shuts Down While Attempting to Start Up (HardDrive I/O Error)

    Hey guys,
I've been having some issues with my mid-2012 MBP (8 GB's RAM, 750 GB HardDrive). It has the latest version of OS X Yosemite installed.
About a month ago, I turned on my MBP, typed in my password and it began loading the operating system. This usually take 30-45 seconds or so for the loading bar to fill up and the desktop to show. And then maybe another minute or two once the desktop is visible for the "startup process" to finish in the background so I can open apps quickly and efficiently.
However, this time, the Macbook took about 10 minutes, got halfway done and I was forced to give it a hard shutdown. I then tried unsuccessfully to start the system again and each time it wouldn't load past a certain point. It then miraculously started working after letting it cool for a few hours.
Fast fwd a month later, my computer seemed much slower than usual. I always was checking activity monitor and my file cache was taking up 4gb of ram at times. My computer would slow down to the point where I had to give it a hard restart often.
Then last week, I started the computer, typed in my password and it started to load. After a minute of trying to load, it shuts off. It no longer loads to the desktop, it simply shuts down after every attempt. So I ran some diagnostics.
While doing the Single-User Mode...it spit back out that I have a HardDrive I/O Error. Also, my hard drive is not mounted when I run disk utility.
All my files are backup online and on external HD. Do you think I need a new internal hard drive? Suggestions?

A hard drive I/O error means that the hard drive is completely damaged and cannot be used anymore, so you need a new hard drive. As you have a backup, you will not lose any data.
It is up to you to replace the hard drive yourself or to take the MacBook to an Apple Store or reseller. The price difference is not very high, but if you do it yourself, you can choose the hard drive you want to install (7200 rpm hard drives will give you a bit more performance). If you have decided to do this yourself, buy the hard drive at OWC or Crucial.
After getting the new hard drive, use OS X Recovery (hold Command, Alt and R keys while your Mac is starting up) to restore the backup.

  • Mbp retina mid 2012 Shuts down unexpectedly

I have my mbp for 2 years now. After the first year i installed windows 7 via bootcamp.I never had any problems with it until one day when i had connected an audio system to it and played skyrim.I stepped on the audio system cable and the jack pulled off from the laptop - It then suddenly crashed and made a weird noise.Since then i had continuously problems with it restarting over and over again when trying to play games.Sometimes i would kind of resolved the problem by putting the laptop on a table and not touching it (external keyboard and mouse) and i could played games for hours and it didn't shut down.
Today i got tired of this issue and tried to fix the problem.I reinstalled mac os x (because i wiped it when i installed win 7) and did the CMD + D test -> i got this error while unplugged   4SNS/1/40000001 : ID0R-0.000     but i did the test again while plugged and it found zero problems.I don't think this is the issue and luckily, after i tried to play something and it (of course) restarted, i got my hands on this report

I must mention that I'm currently writing this from it.It doesn't have any problems whatsoever when i don't do heavy load, but while trying to play games it almost everytime restarts.. everytime the screen shuts down the first and then, after a couple of seconds, the entire system.I also must mention that sometimes when i played games for long time and it didn't shut down, when i tried to pull it off and shake it a little it shut down (now, if not playing games, i can move it with no worries). Also, while i had windows on it many times it restarted almost immediately after i logged in and opened a browser.I'm sorry for my english, i hope you guys can understand what my problem is.. i still have another year of warranty but i would like to resolve this issue by myself.Ohh.. i forgot.. another mention : i did the Pram and SMC resets --> nothing solved.

  • Why does my 3-year old MBP shut down and not start?

I have a mid-2010 MPB running Mt Lion and it is giving me fits.  It consistently shuts down for no reason.  I have taken it to the Genius bar and been told that I should add additional memory, so I have doubled the RAM with a new unit.  The problem is that did nothing.  I keep having to restart and now it seems not to want to start at all, so I can't do anything or learn anything.  I have the basic MBP but I have 2011 Office for Mac and the other basic apps on board.  Any ideas?

    Hello peterdowning
Start with the troubleshooting steps in the article below to try and resolve the start up issues.

  • MBP freezes, shuts down, restarts, repeats after log in

Late 2007 MBP recently upgraded to Yosemite started freezing, shutting down by itself, and then restarting by itself.  I log in, and within anywhere from 10 seconds to 3 minutes after my screen fully loaded, repeats this.  120 gig hard drive is way full.  So pretty sure that is part of problem.  Has been sluggish for weeks.  Have about 18 gigs free.  Attempting to move things off but it won't stay on long enough to do this.
This morning I managed to access Disk Utilities for repair upon start up, but I was trying different keystrokes to do this. (Posed question for proper keys to do this in another post, but feel free to answer here.)  It performed disk repair and showed all the steps it took.  Two items appeared in red:
Incorrect number of file hard links
Orphaned file inode (id = 35716717)
    Then in green:
The Volume MacIntosh HD was repaired successfully.
A couple of lines farther down appeared:
Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.
By this time the timer status showing the repair taking place was gone and I didn't do anything for about ten minutes.  Then I restarted, but the problem has continued. While doing this I was offline.

I forgot to add that right after the note that the HD was repaired successfully appeared:
File system check exit code is 0.

  • 2011 MBP shuts down when connected to external display

I've been using my 2011 15" MBP for about a week now with no problem until today when I tried to connect it to my old 20" cinema display. I have the mini display port hooked up to the dvi adapter and a usb connection hooked up to external keyboard and mouse. Everything works just fine if I keep the lid up on the MBP, but if I shut the lid, the MBP shuts down. Down, not that the big screen goes black & then comes on again. It turns itself off.
Any way I can avoid a trip to the Apple store? In the past, the "geniuses" knew less about external displays than I did. Is there an issue because of the dual graphics cards?

no - I realized later that the machine doesn't shut off it just acts like it. The hard drive stops spinning & the screen remains black no matter what I do. This doesn't happen when I just shut the lid & then go back to working on it.
Then if I shut it again & try to get the monitor to respond, I get a blue screen of death color with a two inch band of blue noise along the left side. Very weird.

  • MBP shuts down when connecting to power

Since a week or two, my MacBookPro from early 2011 shuts down when connecting the magsafe to power. Also when starting up again it will start up fine and fast from battery, but I need to hold the power button for several seconds when connected to power.
Another problem I had earlier as well is  CPU (kernel task) of over 90%, which I now see clearly, only occurs when connected to power. I used to solve this problem by putting the MBP to sleep, but now, when put to sleep, it will shut down.
When on battery, I have no CPU problem and can put machine to sleep without a problem.
I recently started uploading everything to dropbox, and activate caffeine to make sure it will keep uploading. My computer will run for days on power combined with caffeine, but is as slow as **** because of a >90% CPU.
The battery has had a notification for maybe a year, that it needed service, so today I finally bought and installed a new battery, but the problem is not solved. Is this software or could it be my magsafe adapter? Thanks for you help.

It sounds like a problem with the power management inside your MBP. I suggest you call Apple to make an appointment at your local Apple store for them to check it out for you.

  • External HD shut down when turning off MBP.  How?

    Hi there
I have an external HD connected via Firewire to my MBP. How can I achieve the following? :
    1. To have the external HD shut down automatically when I shut down the MBP. At the moment, if I shut down the MBP, the external HD stays on and I have to turn it off manually.
    2. To have the external HD go into sleep mode (if possible) automatically when I put the MBP into sleep mode.
    3. To have the external HD wake up from sleep mode or turn on whenever I do the same on the MBP.
    Thanks for your help,
    A.

Thank you both, Ned and hsaybasIII, I guess that's answered then. I was hoping to hear that there's some Utilities control, or Preferences pane that I wasn't aware of, and which enabled the feature I was talking about. Especially since I remember using it a long time ago on a much older Mac and an external HD, so I was assuming that these days that would be implemented too. Oh well... Thanks again.

  • MBP will not shut down, also F keys etc. not working. Help?

Hello, must preface that I am not a very computer-savvy person, so please explain as if to a four-year old.
My MBP is about 4 years old, but has been working great all that time. Suddenly, a problem.
I realized that most of my F keys have ceased working, such as turning on the backlit keyboard, adjusting screen brightness, and adjusting volume. I thought a restart would fix it, but my machine will not restart or shut down. I click to request it, but nothing happens. I also try to view "about this mac" from the apple-icon menu (wanted to provide that info for this entry), but the spinning beach ball of doom appears for a moment, then vanishes, and the panel with the info does not open. Also, some of my hot corners have stopped working. Otherwise, it works fine. All my software works, and no sudden crashes.
I haven't installed any new software recently, or done anything out of the ordinary to the MBP, for a few months at least.
I haven't forcequitted the machine, tried to start in safe mode, or started while pushing command, R, P, option, or anything else. I did clear the caches and ran disk utility to repair permissions... then saw another post online saying I *shouldn't* do that stuff. Doh.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to resolve this? Obviously, the machine is out of warranty, I do have the disks that came with the machine, and I run time machine regularly...but I'd rather not have to do a fresh reinstall of everything, if it can be avoided.
Any help would be much appreciated.

"I haven't forcequitted the machine, tried to start in safe mode, or started while pushing command, R, P, option, or anything else."
    do command-option-p-r
if that does't do it reset the smc.

  • MBP shut downs

Brand new MBP 13 has shut down unexpectedly at least 6 times since I unboxed it last night.  It seems to be while handling the MBP with my right hand as if to hand it to a person or move it.  Several times while downloading software.  And always on battery.  Of course I have not moved it much while plugged in.
Is this crazy or has this happened to others out there?
               Thanks for any help!!!

    Hi Scott,
As firm as these machines might seem, they "flex" when handled with one hand by the edge of the MBP. The clearances are so tight inside the case, that even this seemingly insignificant flex can cause internal parts to come in contact with other parts that they are not supposed to. Always handle the machine with two hands and see if the "issue" stops showing itself.

  • MBP 17inch A1151 shuts down with battery

I just bought a used MBP.  It came without a batter.  It booted fine when I bought it and ran off of my MacBook power adapter (60w).  I ordered a new battery and 85w charger.  Whenever I put the battery in with it started up, the MBP shuts down within 5 seconds.  If I put the battery in when it is off and boot it up, it will not get through the boot process without shutting down.  I left the battery in with the MBP off and plugged in to charge the battery.  It is fully charged.
I have seen reports of this problem and wonder if it needs a new logic board or could it be something else.
Or, if I should just use it without the battery as a desktop computer.

I saw that some people were posting battery reports, so I checked mine.  I booted it without the battery and opened the Power information to see the battery cycle count, etc.  So, i installed the battery and the battery indicator in the menu changed from X battery to plugged battery,  said it is at 96% and charged, but the system info never changed from no battery installed.  I even went to printers and then back to power and it never noted a battery was installed.  weird.

  • Should I shut down or sleep my MBP 13"?

Hi, I have a general question. I just bought my MBP 13'' and I really want to take care of it since I bought it with sacrifice. I use my laptop pretty much everyday, should I just put it to sleep or shut it down? what's the best thing to do? Also, should I live it charging the entire time?

General answer is that you should run your MacBook on battery until it is almost out of charge, then fully charge it. Keeping it plugged into AC all the time is not recommended, but if you have a day here & there where you keep it plugged in, that's ok. Sometimes it's advisable to have it plugged in - for example, when projecting (PPTs, etc), watching video (DVDs, Netflix, etc) or doing installations or updates to software.
Regarding shutdown vs. sleep - generally, I'd advise shutting down when you are done for the day. It's amazing how many little gremlins disappear after a shutdown & restart.
