Shutting down on it's own

My MacBook keeps shutting down on it's own without any notice and it can't be open unless I unplug it if it shuted down plug and vice-versa
I changed my batterie about 1 year and a half ago, what would be the cause of this problem ? And do you have any advice because it's not on the warranty anymore and I dont want to bring it in and pay a fortune.
Thank you for your help

I fear I know that the problem is, but you might want to visit your local Apple Store/Genius Bar for a second opinion. Apple's extended warranty program for this model has ended, but there's a chance that a good-hearted person at the Genius Bar will respect your situation.
I urge you to leave a message on this thread with the results.

  • IMac shuts down on it's own

    Hey folks,
I've had my iMac for just over a year now and it's been shutting down on it's own quite frequently. When the weather is warmer, it shuts down a few times a day. Recently, I moved the iMac to a cooler room in the house and it shuts down maybe once or twice a week.
I've taken it into the Genius Bar and they held it for a week doing diagnostic tests and said they could not replicate the issue and gave it back to me. It is VERY frustrating to have my computer shut down on me at random intervals, especially when I'm working on something important. I've noticed that the top left portion of the iMac gets very warm to the touch, compared to other parts.
Has anyone had any similar experiences?
    Thanks!

    You're welcome.
Many users here use a widget called iStatPro available here. http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/istatpro.html
    Comes in very handy.
*"aid the iMac was within specs and operating fine. I took it home that day and it shut down on me some more... so I was some what disappointed!'*
I'd be disappointed also. Perhaps there's an underlying issue here. Have you verified the hard disk for errors lately?
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window where you see Capacity and Available. Make sure there is always 15% free disk space. Not enough disk space can cause directory corruption.

  • Macbook keeps shutting down on it's own

my macbook pro shut down on it's own yesterday and to turn it back on i had to press and hold on the on button for at least a few minutes. it keeps happening about every 15 minutes and then it stopped.

Reset your SMC which can sometimes fix unexpected shutdowns.

  • Iphone 3gs shuts down & reboots on its own.

The 2 yr old iphone 3gs shuts down on its own and the silver apple icon pops up ~ the phone boots itself up. This has been happening more frequently, since Dec 2010. I could be on the internet, or using any app and it does this. A couple times I had to simutaneously hold down the power and home buttons to turn on the phone, and, or, unfreeze the phone. I always charge my phone, and regularly sync it with the latest upgrade(s). What is going on?

I had this, but I have now rectified the issue. It's an app?
I de-selected all my apps and just left the standard ones on.
I did a full restore from backup but did not sync any apps.
Problem solved, no more dropped calls. No more apple logo for no reason.
I am slowly re-adding my apps, 1 or 2 at a time, I have over 150 so it may take a while but so far I have reloaded about 10 of my most used ones and still everything fine. I will find the one that caused the problem eventually!!
Happy bunny again though, as I have a phone that can actually make a call for more than 5 minutes!!

  • My G5 Shuts down on it's own

My G5 keeps shutting down. Sometimes it is every few days, sometimes it shuts down after a few minutes. It might do this 5 - 10 times in a row. It makes the computer useless at times. It may only be only long enough to start up a program then shuts down then repeat. Then it might not do it for a few days.

Here is some of the log. It took me a long time to get because the computer would restart before I could start the program. I'm starting to see a pattern it will restart 5-10 times then it will run for hours without restarting. I'm sending this from my laptop.
As I was falling asleep I heard my mac restart, then repeated 3 or 4 times. I got up and shut it down. It started up on it's own after a few mintues. I had to unplug it!
Is there any software to protect from demonic possesion?

  • My iphone 4s keeps shutting down on it's own and seems to restart itself. Pressing the home button or trying a hard reset does not turn the phone back on. Is anyone else having problems like this?

My iPhone 4s keeps randomly shutting down. It usually does this after it's been sitting in sleep mode for a few minutes. Pressing the home button or attempting a hard reset does not turn the phone back on. It seems to turn on on it's own. It has done this since I got it and seems to be doing it more frequently. I've only had the phone for about 2 months.

  • My mac shuts down suddenly on its own

    Please help
Since installing 10.4.8 my mac has been shutting itself off on its own.
While I would normally applaud such energy saving activity, it isn't
appreciated when I'm in the middle of doing something.
Pretty much that is the story: mac shutting down suddenly while I'm busily typing something. One moment working, next machine has turned itself off.
None of the logs show anything interestingly amiss, but I could be wrong.
Anyone else experiencing this sort of thing?
    Thanks in advance,
    Carol Hatcher

My Appologies. I mistakenly thought that since I filled out the
fields below the message box with the model, os and other details that
they would be visiable to all. What a fool i was.
I have a iMac G5 running Mac OSX 10.4.8 right now.
    Other details:
    Processor: power pc
    Memory : 2G
I have owned it since May of 2005.
The shutdown now occurs while logging in. It took me three tries
tonight to get up and running.
Also, when logging in, i have to wait over a minute for the keyboard to be recognized - no response in the password
    field.
Best wishes to all and thank you all in advance,

  • My iPad shuts down on it's own and will not wake up unless you plug in. It happens at all levels of charge

My iPad shuts down at all levels of charge on it's own. The only way to wake it up is the plug it in. Once plugged in for a few minutes the apple icon appears and then hitting the wake button will start it. Nothing else seems to work. I have tried re booting , re setting and charging to 100%. Works fine for a while then just shuts down. It is only about 8 months old.

Bizarre to say the least. You may have a funky or corrupt app that is giving the iPad the "willies". Maybe if the iPad begins to function normally again you can isolate the problematic app - if one does in fact exist. I know this is a bit cumbersome, but if you can remember which apps were in the task bar, as you go to use them, just make note of when the problem arises again and if it occurs right after using one particular app, you may have found the culprit.

  • Ipod Shuts Down on it's own upon selection of a song.

For some reason, My ipod (30 gb 5th gen) which I just bought a couple weeks ago keeps shutting down when I select a song to play. It loads the song, Gets ready to play it, but then vibrates, shuts itself off and displays the Apple logo. I thought this was a fluke or it was because I hadn't updated my Itunes program on my PC. Both of these do not check out, and it continues to shut off automatically when I select a certain song. Note: This is not every song, nor a specific album. I tried to skip it and move on, and it played one song, then had another song with the same error. I moved on to the next, and had a string of at least ten where the error did not occur, so I didn't know what to think so I got on here. I hope there are some nuts out there with nothing better to do than answer this question, because I hate mysteries and waiting, and this is doing both. It says feel free to call customer support all over this dang site, but never once offers the **** number.

I think I got it. I searched shut down on here and someone somewhere said to shut off EQ. That seems to have done the trick. If you know the reason behind this, I would be glad to hear it. It sure had me baffled this afternoon...

  • IPhone shuts down on it's own

    Hi All,
My iPhone 4 (16GB, AT&T, 2 years old this month) has been shutting down randomly for about two weeks now, with increasing frequency. I've noticed no pattern which brings this on, no particular app, no rhyme or reason. Trying to restart using the top/lock button sometimes yields a restart that fails (silver Apple logo, then black, no beep) or the "out of battery" dim screen. I've also tried various button combinations (home + lock, home + lock + volume buttons, both, and individually) to no avail. I've restored the phone and backed up from recent and old backup copies.  I've restored and used it as a new phone, both had no effect. The only thing that brings it back is to plug it into a power source of some sort.
Some articles and discussions suggest this is a battery issue. As of 2-3 weeks ago, I had about a full day's worth of charge if I charged the iPhone overnight. This came on rather suddenly, and I know batteries do not normally fail so epically so quickly. I'm not rough on the device, it lives in my pocket and I have a case on it.
Can someone tell me what is going on here, and if there is a fix? I'm at the end of my contract with AT&T, and was planning on just continuing on with this phone as I'm not in a position to purchase a new one. It's clearly out of warranty, and I do not want to think that Apple, a company I have purchased thousands of dollars worth of computers and iDevices from, and supported since their stock prices was in the double digits, could let something like this happen "coincidentally" when my contract is up.
    Thank you all,
    -S

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.

The symptoms you describe with and ALS model are indicative of a power supply failure, and not an issue with electrolytic capacitors on the logic board.
I was speaking about the components in the power supply, although the Logic Board components are also in visually good condition.
My concern is; replacing the PS may place greater pressure on the components of the Logic Board, which are obviously of the same age. Precipitating a similar failure in the LB at an early stage...
£100 for a power supply is one thing, then the probability of £200+ for a LB replacement is quite another. £300+ is not a viable repair for a 5 year old iMac in my opinion.
A dealer or service provider can replace the power supply, which should completely address your issue EXCEPT to the extent that repeated, abnormal shutdowns have damaged your drive directory. Using Disk Utility as a first pass may address any such concerns. More extensive directory damage will require a utility like Disk Warrior.
Quite capable of replacing PS my self, not too worried about the warranty aspect now!
Agreed, repeated shut downs may have messed the directory. The contents have been duplicated throughout the life of the machine, so backup is not an issue, a reformat and zero of the drive would be a natural progression from replacing the PS, if we go that route.
The part required for replacement in an iMac 17 inch (ALS) model is the 661-3627. In the 20 inch (ALS) model, it is a 661-3625.
Thank you for your observations and help, also for the confirmation of the part #. There are some new on UK eBay right now @ £80 - £100.

  • PSE 12 Automatically shutting down after "sign in"

Hi,  I just bought PSE 12 and installed the disk, everything seemed fine with the install.  When I open PSE 12 it says "Sign In Reqired" then I press sign in, and put in my Adobe ID, and it says "please wait for a moment" and then the entire program shuts down on it's own.
I tried to look up several advice questions on this community, so here is what I've tried so far:
    1. Restarting computer.
    2. Uninstalling/Reinstalling
    3. Downloading the Free Trial
    4. Updating Quicktime
    5. Going into Owner > App Data > Roaming > PSE > 12.0 (and then deleating the contents)
    6. Creating a new Adobe ID
I am running Windows 7.1, no prior Photoshop program was installed.  Also, the trial version of PS premere elements 12 that came on the disk seems to work fine?
    Any suggestions would be awesome
    -Lielanie

That means that for some reason PSE isn't liking your Adobe ID. It would probably be quickest to contact activation support:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/activation-deactivation-products.html
If you scroll down there's a place on that page to start a chat session and they can usually fix it right away.
In case you didn't know, in PSE 12 sign in = activate.

  • Why is my Macbook Pro suddenly and constantly shutting down/crashing on me and giving me a blacked out or blued out screen with lines?  Seems like a total system failure is happening?

Macbook Pro- shortly after upgrading to free software upgrade to Mavericks- 10.9.5-
has suddenly been freezing up, but went more directly to 'shutting down,'  CRASHING on its own.  Most of the time, if I'm even able to successfully get the laptop turned back on, it only stays up/on for a few moments before repeating the failure.   The failure is often accompanied with the monitor going 'blank,' or most typically either 'blacking out,' or going blue/green or grey screen with lines or grids all over the monitor.  All Desktop visibility, functions or applications in process disappears.  This has caused repetetive 'forced shut downs,' which I never usually do, unless prompted to because I have no choice like this.... Or as I said, the computer itself will just shut down and turn off by itself.... Can anyone tell me what this issue is, and I'm pretty sure other Mac users have seen this exact thing I'm describing happening on their laptops, with their systems or on their monitors.  Someone please explain or point me in the right direction... as naturally my laptop just went out of warranty as well.... And I don't know if this means the entire system is basically corrupted, dying/dead... and or if it is a monitor issue, a hardware issue, software issue or if there is anything that can be done to restore, repair it, etc.?   Also another thing I have noticed ever since getting this laptop- (few years old now...) is that it runs VERY HOT... has in fact burned my lap /skin many times... and seems like the fan or internal operating systems/functions are also perhaps not functioning properly.  Can this also be causing the problem?  Or is it a corruption or virus of some kind? etc.   Thank you.

What you describe sounds like a hardware issue. Unfortunately, you'll need to get that checked out by Apple. If you have an Apple Store near you, make an appointment with the Genius Bar and take the machine in for evaluation.
