Shutting down spontaneously

My 2010 mac book pro just shuts down even when plugged in and fully charged
Battery was replaced a month ago

karenfromkanehoe,
OK, you should consider updating your profile on this site  to reflect your currently installed version of OS X.
Boot your MacBook Pro into Recovery mode by holding down a Command key and the R key as it starts up. Once the  OS X Utilities menu appears, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Does it still shut down spontaneously?

  • MacBook shuts down spontaneously when on battery power

My 2.0GHz MacBook has started shutting down spontaneously after half an hour or so of waking from sleep. After it shuts down, when I try to reboot it it shuts down straight away after the boot sound.
Plugging the power cable in seems to allow me to boot, but it has also shut down randomly a couple of times whilst plugged in.
Is this enough of a problem to get an entire machine replacement? I also have the stain issue (early signs of unremovable stains after only two weeks with the laptop), the moo issue, casing around the screen that is loose and at least ten keys that sit on the keyboard at an angle with one that was broken from the day I opened it (the "." key no less).
Will I be able to get a replacement unit if I go to an Apple Store genius bar? I'm thinking either London, or Bluewater. I only ask because I have a conference that I need to report from in the next couple of weeks and can't afford to:
    a) wait for repairs if I send it off to Apple
    b) trust Apple to fix all the issues I have with the machine.
I want a complete replacement, that's the only way I have a guarantee this problem won't come back in the middle of an interview recording.
Thanks in advance for your help,
    Conrad

What do you mean with "shutdown"? If it powers off all of a sudden, without kernel panics or going through the OS shutdown procedure, then it must be somehow related to the hardware.
I had a similar behaviour (random power offs and inability to restart my MB for a while) after installing two new RAM modules. I noticed that putting back the original modules solved it so I inserted the new modules paying more care and eventually everything started working properly.
    Good luck...

  • Computer shuts down spontaneously

Computer shuts down. Does not crash in use. Has only happened while in sleep mode overnight. On two occasions sleep light blinking, but computer shut down when mouse moved. Will not turn on again, unless power strip turned off then back on. Other items connected to power strip not affected. No other signs of power surge or voltage drop in house. Have not made any changes in power saving. Appears to be something in the computer. No abnormal fan noise or any other indication that it is overheating. Has not happened while in use. Suggestions?

May I add one more voice to the chorus?
My 1st Generation PPC G5, OS 10.5.6. 2GB Apple-installed RAM,on which the logic board was replaced under warranty (bad capacitors) several years ago, has begun shutting down spontaneously and the only way to restart it is to unplug it, wait about 20", plug it back in and then it will restart.
Assuming lighting hasn't struck twice and that it's not the logic board, I wonder if it is the power supply. I know very little about interpreting logs, but here is the take from my Systems Log just before it shut itself down at 18:59:05 this evening:

If it is the power supply, how much would it be to have it replaced by Apple at the local Apple Store? Anyone have a ballpark figure?

  • My 3gs shuts down spontaneously after 5 minutes

My iPhone 3GS started to act up recently.
It just shuts down spontaneously after about 5 minutes irregardless of what I am doing with it.
It is not a jail-break phone.
    Can someone please help?

My iPhone is doing the same. Went to apple they showed me how to click home twice then hold the most bottom left icon, then there will be a row of icons across the bottom screen these are all the apps running at the same time. Try closing them all except what you need. Because this multitasks it could be crashing.
    However...
Also could be the lithium-ion battery/controller. Because lithium batteries cannot be allowed to be discharged completely they have (I suspect) a built in controlling device. If this device or the battery does not operate according to design your phone will shut down so the battery does not over discharge. Lithium-ion batteries should never be exposed to extreme heat either.
Because I feel that my problem is my battery I am taking it back and insisting replacement

  • IMac shutting down spontaneously!

Like the title says, my iMac will shut down all by itself, I think it is associated with getting really hot as it only happens when the computer has been running for a long time, like say 10 hours or more. Details- after this happens, the computer won't start up, is completely unresponsive, unless I unplug the power source cable and plug it back in. This is true without exception. Surely this means something.
Did the Disk Utility and the fsck -fy trick upon starting up (after this happened) while holding command (apple key) and S. Dunno what those things or that mode is called. They report back with no complaints of any kind, everything is OK.
Can anyone tell me what the issue might be? I love this computer and having to leave it would be a tearful experience!
feel free to ask if you need to ask about anymore details.
Thanks in advance for your helpful responses
    Agamemnon

Thanks to all for the input, I solved my problem completely and my beautiful 20" flatscreen iMac is running like new. I'm deeply, deeply embarrassed to say that the problem was solved by cleaning out the air intake vents on the bottom of the base of the computer. I vacuum regularly around it, but when I got a good look, each one of the slots was filled with what looked like a pianohammer of felt. I vacuumed it out by sticking the very edge over the edge of the table, and vacuuming while poking.disloging the gunk with a bamboo skewer. All with the machine off, of course. I slowly rotated the machine, continuing this process until I was back where I started.
Not only does it not shutdown on its own, it's quieter than it has been in years!!!!! It runs MUCH cooler as well. I shudder when I remember how hot everything got. discs out of the drive were nearly unhandleable!
So, happy end, moral of the story- it pays to clean, or, GRIME does not pay!

  • IMac late 2013 shuts down spontaneously after 2 hours, offers sign in screen

  • Mac shuts down spontaneously

Can anyone help with this? When I've been out of the room for a few hours I come back to find my computer has shut itself down. This is not keeping me from using the computer but is alarming. This is a new occurrence .

    Try resetting the SMU:
    1. Turn off the computer by choosing Shut Down from the Apple menu, or by holding the power button until the computer turns off.
    2. Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord.
    3. Wait 10 seconds.
    4. Plug in the power cord while simultaneously pressing and holding the power button on the back of the computer.
    5. Let go of the power button.
    6. Press the power button once more to start up your iMac.
You might also want to look in your Applications>Utilities>Console and check your system logs for the time and dates of the shutdowns, see if there's any mention of maximum temperatures being exceeded.

  • Satellite Pro L10 shuts down spontaneously

My wife's 4 year old L10 (Windows XP) has recently developed a habit of shutting down for no apparent reason.
There is no error message. It doesn't seem to be overheating.
The shutdown is not associated with any particular software. It occurs when she is using it.
It's causing her great irritation and since she expects me to fix the problem I'm under pressure!
    Any ideas, please?

    Hello Hugh
You are right about laptops disassembling. It is a little bit more complicated then do this on desktops. The disassembling procedure must be done in the right order to avoid damage. There are so many small plastic parts and holders and to move some of them you need special tools.
Unfortunately, the maintenance manuals is not a public document and that is the reason why you cannot find anything on Toshibas page about it.
I don't know what to say. On one side I understand you that you want to solve it on your own but you must also know that you do this on your own risk. Please be careful and don't do anything that can break the plastic covers.

I'm seeing several things that could cause trouble.
First, the WD external drive. WD bare drives are superb but, when WD puts a nice drive in their cheap enclosure, you get grief. After nearly three years of suffering with wake-from sleep freezes, stalling, failures to mount--you name it--I ripped apart my WD MyBook Studio Edition this week (made for Mac, they say) to salvage the nice Caviar Green 750GB drive to go into a new OWC enclosure. Until the new enclosure arrives, I brought in an older OWC FW400 external and it has caused zero problems.
So disconnect the WD and run a while without it--see if things get better.
You also have some third-party extensions showing up:

    jp.plentycom.driver.SteerMouse          4.1.3
    at.obdev.nke.LittleSnitch          3862
Make sure you have all updates for Parallels and Little Snitch. Outdated versions have been fingered before as troublemakers. Try disabling the others and adding them back one at a time until problems return. Having both USB Overdrive and SteerMouse installed could be producing a conflict.
Did this start after adding RAM? Some people have reported newer iMacs being happy with more or less than 16GB but acting up with exactly 16GB. Easy to test--pull two modules and see how it runs on 8MB. The long list of backtrace numbers toward the top of the list could point to incompatible RAM.

  • Power Supply Temperatures Running Hot! Mac Pro shuts down.

    Hello,
First I will give machine/hardware specs of interest:
    2 x 3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon (pre 2009)
    8 GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
NVIDIA Quadro FX 5600 (running 2 displays)
    Apple RAID Card/Controller
    SMC Version: 1.25f4
*venting dimensions around computer: top=18", left side=3", right side=3" and back=18".
    Software of interest currently running:
    OS X 10.5.8
    iStat Menu
    SMC Fan Control
My machine has been shutting down spontaneously and I suspect either CPU or power supply overheating. In the 5 instances this has occurred, the room was very warm (AC was not on) and I was running HandBrake with CPU at full and an iStat reading of 145 F. Ambient was 77 F and I was not reading power supply temps at the time. I figured for sure this must be a CPU overheating issue. However, just a few hours ago I had another shutdown. The room was warm again but I was not running Handbrake, but StarCraft II. I have played a lot of Starcraft II with no problems until tonight.
I decided, this time, to check the temps on my power supplies. Power supply 1 = 147 F, and #2 is at 178 F. After many hours of searching forums I have concluded that these are crazy hot temps! I immediately installed SMC Fan Control to attempt to increase the fan speeds. I was successful in increasing all fans except the power supply (stuck at 599rpm). I have now turned the AC on in the house and the Ambient is down to 70, PS #1 145 and PS #2 169. All of these temps are a result of and idle machine running a browser.
The following may or may not be an issue, however, leave no stone unturned. I currently have 12 external devices running on USB. 4 WD passport drives, 1 DVD writer, 5 WD powered drives plus the keyboard and mouse. Also, the Mac Pro is plugged into a small UPS.
In all my forum searches, I just can't seem to answer some basic questions:
    1. Can an overheated power supply shut the system down?
    2. What are optimal (normal) running temps for Mac Pro's? (everyone seems to have opinions, but there doesn't appear to be a technical specification anywhere).
    3. I thought the fans, especially CPU fans, were supposed to kick in when the heat rises. Why are mine staying at minimal rpm's?
Finally, does it look like I need new power supplies? Fans?
This machine was put into service in March of 2008 and has done very intensive rendering for the film industry...long nights...rendering for days sometimes. It has been retired for over a year now and is used at a lesser degree.
Thanks for reading this long post! I appreciate any input you can provide!
    Other iStat reading of interest:
    Power Supply 1 voltage = 12.28 V
    Power Supply 1 current = 26.44 A
    Power Supply 1 power = 316.75 W

Also, the Mac Pro is plugged into a small UPS.
    Put your peripherals on that.
Don't share the same circuit for A/C as the Mac Pro, and put the Mac on 1300VA UPS at least.
As for all those external drives.... I'd consolidate into a good SATA case or two.
And yes in summer run with 3 of the fans up around 900 rpm.

  • Nokia Lumia 925 Windows phone keeps shutting down

I have had a problem for the past 2 months, my Nokia Lumia 925 with Win 8.1 keeps shutting down spontaneously. (I did not have this problem before 8.1)  This is my third phone in the last 2 months (warranty program keeps sending me replacements) and it shut down for the first time this morning. All 3 have developed the same problem, the phone will shut down spontaneously and the only way to start it up again is a soft reset (Volume down + Power for 15 seconds). I have had a total of 10-15 shutdowns between the 3 phones and this is a conservative estimate.
I am thinking that this has to be a setting or an app that I use (and few others do) that is causing the shutdown since I have only seen a few other similar issues in the forums. Here are some of the basic facts about my situation and some of the actions I have taken:
                  - I have wiped the phones repeatedly (3 phones wiped a total of 3 or 4 times not including the initial setup of the replacement phones, which is getting really old--really fast).
                   - I have tried turning off NFC, but that obviously  wasn't the issue because NFC was off this morning when it shut off.
                    - I have tried trimming the screen protector/screen guard I installed as suggested in one of the other forums even though that seemed ridiculous (I think that was a different model phone too, but I gave it a shot)
I have not noticed any common occurrence such as
--when a certain app is running
                               --when it is on/off charger,
-- When the battery is full or low (it was 24% this morning).
-I have 2 chargers, 3 if you include the car charger that I have never had to use due to great battery life.
                   - I have called tech support several times, all AT&T can tell me is that this is not a known issue and I should wipe it again. Nokia says the same and that I should send it back to them for repairs. That seems fruitless to me because I have had 3 different phones, what are they going to repair that a new phone won't fix?
It takes me 3 hours to reinstall and set up my apps, I am getting very frustrated. I really love the way this phone functions, the software is good, the screen is brilliant and very sensitive, the camera is great (although a bit slow), and the size and feel are perfect for me...I hope that someone here on the forums can help.
Thanks for your help in advance...
    Al

    Hello, mariaadamsky.
We appreciate you reaching out to our community regarding your concern. You are using a Lumia 925 as well, correct? Did something happen to your phone that possibly caused such behavior? Did you try doing fixes on it?
Latest software released for Lumia phones is the Lumia Cyan. To confirm that you have it installed on your phone, go to Settings> extras+info. You can also try going to Settings> phone update> check for updates to check if there's an available update. Are your system apps also updated? While connected to WiFi, go to Store> ...> downloads to check for pending updates. Let's hope that the phone will not shut down while doing this process.
By the way, we can try other fixes that could help us identify the real cause of the issue. In case you wish to have it repaired in a Nokia Care Point, warranty claim may vary per region and Nokia does not have an international warranty. Also, creating a backup is a must to avoid data loss. Where did you buy the phone and where are you located right now? To know about the manufacturer's limited warranty, go here: http://nds1.nokia.com/files/support/global/phones/guides/Nokia_Manufacturers_Limited_Warranty_with_W....
We look forward to your reply.

  • Iphone 4 / 4s  shuts down frequently from itself

My girl-friend has an iphone 4 and since a few weeks it shuts down frequently spontaneous.
Replaced the battery and totally renewed the IOS. No succes. While doing this, my iphone 4 also shut down spontaneous!
Also replaced the battery and replaced the IOS. No succes. 2 Friends of mine have exactly the same problems with their iphone 4S.
Is there a wifi-virus in Nijmegen, The Netherlands???  Are there more people with this problem??
If shut down, it can be started up again by doing a reset. Our iphones are not reliable anymore.....

After I removed Facebook and FB messenger, my iphone problems vanished. No spontaneous shutdowns anymore.
My girl-friend first removed FB messenger with no succes. After removing Facebook, she also is free of problems.

  • Imac Shuts Down 4 No Reason

Just got my 20" new Imac and it keeps shutting down after using it for a while. Any ideas?

I have 6 new iMacs (intel based) one at home and 5 at my office as well as a macBook pro. So far 2 of the iMacs are shutting down spontaneously and randomly. When it first started happening I took one to an apple service provider they couldn't find anything wrong and proceeded to charge me for nothing. I then called apple care who told me some things to try that both didn't work. I called apple care back and they told me to take it back to a service provider even though I had already done this (and paid). I took to a different provider who spent a lot of time on it and still couldn't find the problem (they at least didn't charge me). Needless to say I am getting extremely fed up. I made a significant investment in these computers and they have already cost me major headaches and unnecessary time. I have a large amount of apple shares which are at least doing well but who knows what will happen if others are having the same problems without resolution that I am. If you have any luck let me know.

  • Are you sure you want to shut down now? repeatedly appears spontaneously.

Shut down dialog box appears spontaneously anytime. I cancel, but a few minutes later it reappears. How to stop?

    Hi Richard
Do you have just a single user account on your mac?
The first thing to do, is to check if the problem is unique to your user account, or happens on others - this will establish whether or not the problem is one of user settings, or something common to the whole system.
If you don't already have a second user account to try, go to System Preferences-Accounts & create a new account by clicking the + icon at bottom left ( if this is 'greyed out' you'll need to click the padlock icon & enter the Admin password first.
After you've created a new account, Log out via the Apple menu-Log Out.... & log in using the new account.
Let us know what you find out.
