Shutting off....only when plugged in.

I know there are a lot of posts out there about the ibook shutting off, but mine has some peculiarities I didn't see in others, so before I take my computer apart as was the conclusion here http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1082138&tstart=0, I'll give this a shot.
My ibook randomly (when in use mostly but sometimes not) shuts down, though I don't think all the way. The screen goes black, and it is quieter, but there is still some sound, indicating it is on somehow. I remove the battery, unplug, wait a bit, put it back in, sometimes this works fine. Sometimes I have to repeat the process.
I should note a few things:
This ONLY happens when the power cord is plugged in.
The power cord is not made by apple, it is a replacement cord.
This started happening after buying and using a different replacement cord than the one I am currently using. This particular cord actually died on me. It still had some power, but not enough to power my ibook.
Does anyone have any recommendations? Even just what to ask if I take it to a mac place?

Do you happen to have iStatPro? It is a widget available from the Apple Web Site. I am wondering if the whirring noise you hear is your fan? Intensive applications tend to raise the temperature of everything and cause the fan to come on.
You might also put activity monitor in your dock and check the CPU usage during some of these big applications. I'm wondering if you are running it almost at its limits and it might be getting overheated and shutting down for that reason. I am not a gamer, but possibly some other member of the forum is and has experienced this phenomonon. I'm not sure of this, but I think the iBook is designed to shut itself off before incurring damage from overheating. I don't know what HD, processor, or RAM you have, but it might be helpful to post that. And also, how much free space there is on your HD. I probably can't help any more, but it might give another gamer enough information to confirm or refute my guess.
Good luck!

  • My MacBook randomly shuts off even when plugged in

I hope someone can help me. My MacBook Pro is not even close to 1 year old and it randomly shuts down completely about twice a day. My battery is stated as in "normal" when looking in the system profiler so I don't think it's the battery, but what other power options could I be having?
I hope there are some Apple gurus that can help me. I am calling Apple tomorrow to see where I can get this fixed, but I don't want the repair guy to say he fixed something when he really didn't. This is my work machine and I would appreciate any help anyone can give me. Not having my MacBook Pro for 1 day is a major killer for me.
    Thanks,
    Jeremy

Oh, well, if you are so brave as to look at the logs, then this will help: from Applications > Utilities > Console.app, double click Console and run that.
Talk about having way too much fun and information: I like to look around in there, it is very intuitive. The diagnostic Reports; oh my! But the coolest is to peer into FILES > /private/var/log > fsck_hfs.log, and see what is ailing, lately. The logs come up scolled down already to the most current crash yah.
Regarding Adobe Reader: I do not use it. For any file that looks for it I do the "get info" (command and "i" key, or when the file is selected click on File in the menu bar and pull down to "get info"), and then in the "get info" box click on Preview, under "Open with," and yes to "Use this applications to open all documents like this one." I personally prefer Preview for opening .pdf files etc., so I have ditched Adobe Reader, no offense. And I do not have on board any MS Office; prefer NeoWriter: less in the bloatware cpu hogging VM-swapping syndrome imho.
I recently had some System hangs with what turned out to be Adobe Updater (on my Mac Mini, not the MBP). That is a separate app! Click on the magnifying glass at the far right of the top of the screen, and type into the Spotlight search bar "Adobe Updater" ... mouse-over (don't click yet) on a file name that appears under the spotlight search bar and in a couple seconds the Path will display, so you will know where it lives ... I dragged mine off, screaming, (me screaming, not the inert inanimate (who knows though: it is Adobe and MS) files and apps to the trash and emptied them, and never yet (knock on wooden head) have had to rue that moment of assertion of independence ...

My phone randomly shut off. When I turned it back on it said it needed to restore, to plug it into itunes. When I did, and tried to restore it, it failed with a code 21. I have followed all the instructions, it still isn't working. I've uninstalled and reinstalled all that the steps told me to, I've updated everything in my computer. I don't know what else to do. My phone will just show the apple sign and the itunes plug in sign.

  • Droid 2 Global: phone staying on only when plugged in.

I've had my phone for about 8 months and I've had no problems until this morning. When I turned my phone on at frist it seemed normal. After it sitting for a second, it cut off. I tried turning it back on and the Motorola screen just kept popping on and off and when plugging it into a charger it would go to the bootloader and say "battery low can not program". I read other threads saying to plug it into the charger and leave it plugged in but my phone was fully charged, from a wall charger, in the first place. Now it only stays on when it is plugged in. WHAT'S GOING ON?

        krg2941,
Good afternoon! I'm sorry to learn the phone is being difficult. That's a big bummer! I would recommend you check the charging port on the phone for rust or corrosion, as that could be causing these concerns. Also, popping the battery out for 10-20 seconds while the phone is on, is another good tip. You may benefit from a new battery or a new device if you are unable to resolve with a reboot. Please send me (AdamE_VZW) a direct message for further assistance if necessary.
    Thank you,

    Glitchs like that sometimes happen
    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If sit still reocurrs a lot, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

    Hi..
Try Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
If that doesn't help, try Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters
When you post, please tell us which Mac OS X you have installed. Thanks

Using the 5th generation iPod. Purchased it a few months ago before the new one was launched. Yes the workout randomly ends when I am no where near the time or distance I have programmed in. I keep tried to restart the workout and the same thing keeps happening over and over again. I figured it may have been the headphones but I have even tried holding the headphone connection in place, and different headphones as well and it continues to happen.

OK. So something went wrong. Restore it and see if it happens again.

macbook shuts off and when I restart it the time is changed? Have I been Hacked?
I am concerned that someone is going to steal my identiy and will in incurr 12 years of bad credit?  I have just installed mountan lion and am unsure if this problem was caused by this? I suspect that if there was someone, or a program was  trying to remotely access my computer then there would be traces of their actions.

How old is your macbook, and what condition is your battery in?
I doubt you're being hacked - more like your battery is dead.
Try doing both PRAM and SMC resets, setting the system time and seeing if they hold. Ensure you are connected to a power source.

  • Brand new macbook won't run off battery, only when plugged in

I just go my new macbook last week and being new to mac computers, I didn't realize that it won't run from just the battery power until last night. The battery light shows it's fully charged. If i'm working with it plugged in and it becomes unplugged, it shuts down and when I reconnect the power cord, it resumes from the same webpage or whatever I was last working on. I opened up the battery compartment and removed the battery and then held the power button for 5 seconds, but that didn't fix the problem. Does anyone know what I might try or if something needs to be set up in order to run off the battery? Thanks! Leigh

    Hello leighdk,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You can by all means take some good advise from the people on this board in response to you problem.
But here is the best advise, especially since you're new to Mac.
Call Apple Care or take it back to the store and have them check it out. It is under warranty. You have 14 days from the date of purchase to return the Mac for a completely different or give it back because you do not like it. they may try to charge you a restocking fee but this should not be the case since there is an issue with you machine.
Call Apple, see what they say... Then if you can't get it resolved then post back and maybe we can give you some sound advise.

  • MBP Shuts off Randomly when not plugged in

So, I've had a 2007 MBP and been very happy until just now.
My computer has started randomly shutting off. Not shutting down, but like "click" off when its not plugged in. This happens at different times, sometimes 5 minutes after its unplugged, sometimes 15, but it will.
Any ideas? Anything I can do? I don't really want to buy a new one because this one works just fine other than that.
    Thanks

Seriously, look on the first page of this forum and you'll see other threads already started on the subject. No-one has a solution as yet, other than replacing the battery, even though it seems to be a software update (Snow Leopard or otherwise) that's the culprit.
