Shutting off wrt54g wireless access?

i recently setup a wrt54g router for my 4 wired desktops and my 1 wireless laptop.  i rarely use the wireless connection. is there a way to disable the wireless access when i dont use it?  i randomly use the wireless about 3 hours a week so i'm thinking it would be nice if it wasnt on the rest of the time.  i know you can set up internet access restrictions through the router setup.  that is not what i am looking for.  it would be great if the router itself had a switch to disable the wireless part but allow the desktops to work.  or maybe there is a software setting in the router admin that does this?

under the wireless tab/wireless security, i sound the setting security mode.  it's currently set to wep.  when i change this to disabled, it turns over the wireless.  this is exactly what i was looking for.  now when i know i wont be using my wireless laptop, i can disable the wireless and not worry about anyone getting on my network.  i do have security setup on it but a wireless router disabled it the best security.     thanks!

  • Wrt54g as a wireless access point

alright i recently changed around my configuration with my wrt54g wireless router. I have made it into an access point which i was unaware is better. Im kinda new to the networking deal though it is what i want to do as a career and access points are new to me. so to the point of this post... when i make it an access point instead of the router i cannot access the admin setup page anymore. I know that when its the DHCP server you type in the default gateway that your given and the admin page pops up... well when its just an access point the gateway is from your router box not the linksys. so how if at all possible am i able to access the setup for the linksys if say i wanted to change the SSID of my network? i appreciate any help
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

It depends. If you have another gateway router then you should assign a LAN IP address inside the gateway router LAN. For instance, if your gateway router uses 192.168.0.1/255.255.255.0 then you could assign a LAN IP address of 192.168.0.2/255.255.255.0, turn off the DHCP server and do the LAN-LAN connection.
If you only have a simple modem and the computers make a direct connection to your ISP then you have to set up a static IP address temporarily. Assuming you did not change the LAN IP address of the WRT from 192.168.1.1/255.255.255.0 you would assign a static IP address 192.168.1.2 with subnet mask 255.255.255.0 on the computer. With this static IP address the computer can access http://192.168.1.1/ After that you change the computer back to DHCP (Retrieve IP address automatically).

  • T61 Wireless Shuts Off

I bought it a year ago, and about a month ago the wireless radio shuts off, and will not turn back on, even when I use the switch, or go into the Netwwork Connections and tell it to enable the wireless radio. I have tried downloading new drivers, and updating the Access Connection center. Also have tried making the wireless the main choice with in the Access Connections, but it will not save the changes, and chooses the LAN line. I think the computer "stops" using the wireless, shuts it off, and then tries to use the LAN line, which is not connected.
Has anyone else had this problem?
    Thanks.

PROBLEM: My T61 is about 1.5yrs old and the wireless also started crashing about 1mo ago...when it does crash, right clicking the wireless icon (in system tray) and choosing the 'Diagnose and repair' function does not fix the problem...in fact, most times when the wireless crashes, the wireless icon is not selectable (and if i try to right click it, this causes the whole system to hang)..none of the other menu driven solutions fix the problem (if anything, it crashes the computer)...it also cannot be fixed by physically cycling the off/on switch for the wireless...a wireless crash can only be temporarily fixed by fully rebooting...however, sometimes after a reboot following a wireless crash, the whole system will crash, i.e., yesterday during reboot i got a BLACK screen of death (not the typical BlueSOD, instead the LCD lost power) and it hung for an eternity (i could here the drive and fan running) so i had to unplug the power cord and battery to reset things...none of this  crashing during reboot BS ever happened until yesterday after using ThinkVantage System Update.
SETUP: running Vista Business with SP1, 2gb ram, sometimes 4gb of ReadyBoost is used but not since having the wireless problem...no other problem with this T61 except USB 2.0 performance is pitiful (a well known Vista problem)...no virus or adware/spyware detected during recent scans.
UPGRADES:  Until yesterday, i avoided updating my T61 using ThinkVantage System Update because the updates seemed to be a waste of space and often degraded performance and/or caused real problems...and because the ThinkVantage suite, as a whole, seems to slow down Vista (it's so much slower than XP Pro), I had uninstalled or deactivated as much of the ThinkVantage suite as possible.
Therefore, as i hadn't installed any ThinkVantage updates in over a year, i can say with 99% confidence the wireless problem is due to a Vista or IE7 updates...the 1% unconfidence could point to a update/upgrade to Firefox 3.x which maybe took place around similar time the wireless started going bad (Anyone suspect problems with FF3.0 on T61???).
Due to the wireless card problem, i decided to install all available upgrades using the ThinkVantage System Update yesterday and it didn't fix anything...in fact, i'd say the wireless card now crashes more often (i've had to reboot 6-8 times since yesterday).
ALSO the PowerManager crashed on start up even though it's worked flawlessly for 1.5yrs...so i'd say PowerManager 2.37 should be avoided. Yes...i tried to uninstall, reboot, and reinstall PM 2.37 but it still crashes.
If it matters to any techies, during yesterday's upgrade, i included the most recent BIOS upgrade (i can't remember the version)...who knows what problems this is causing.
    Solutions?

  • Wireless Shuts Off

I didn't see this topic listed (okay, I only went to page three of the results) but my wireless has a tendency to shut itself off for reasons that elude me. At home, I have wireless and can use the iPhone there. But when I come to work where there are other wireless access points (that I can/have joined), I have to turn on the wireless "switch" on my iPhone and I can't fathom why this is the case. I cannot imagine what I am doing that shuts it off.

Did you try reinstalling the system? My network problems were completely solved by a voodoo solution. As always YMMV. Here is what I did.
    1) Delete ~/Library/Caches and /Library/Caches
    2) Shutdown
    3) Remove battery and then hold down the power key for 4 seconds
    4) Restart with Command + Option + P + R (this zaps the PRAM)
    My wireless now functions perfectly.

  • Can WRT54G be setup as a Wireless Access Point?

Does anyone know how to setup a router (WRT54G) to connect to other routers using a wireless connection and function as either a wireless access point or another router using the main router for it's internet and network connection?

you cannot get  the WRT to connect wireless to any device as it is an access point.
However this same thing will work wired. All you need to do is change the LAN ip of the WRT to 192.168.1.50 from 192.168.1.1 and disable the DHCP on the WRT.
Connect both devices LAN to LAN , do not use the internet port of the WRT.

  • Trouble accessing the internet on a WRT54G wireless router

I’ve run into a problem setting up a wireless network at my friends’ house. The problem is accessing the internet from the wireless PC that has a WMP11 Wireless PCI Card to a WRT54G wireless router.
The wireless PC is running Windows XP and it sees and connects to the router with “excellent” signal strength but will not connect to the internet.
The router is currently set to WEP 128 bit encryption security. I’ve tried disabling the wireless security all together but when I do that the wireless PC no longer sees the router.
I have no trouble connection to the internet thru the wireless network I have set up at my house when I bring his computer there. But my router is an older Linksys 802.11b so maybe that’s why.
Anyone have any ideas what I should try other than telling him to buy a new wireless G adapter card?

If earlier your Wireless Adapter is working fine with the same network & computer .... try upgrading the drivers of the aqdapter .... from http://linksys.com/download  .... uninstall the older drivers & reinstall newer drivers ....

  • My wireless keeps shutting off and have to reboot to get it back on

I have a Macbook Pro 17" I never once had this happen to me before the 2nd time I had to download Lion. So I had Snow Leopard never a issue, then upgraded to Lion no issuses for MONTHS. I had a Motherboard replaced and they replaced my OS to snow leopard and i upgraded it to Lion. Then it started, once then twice then 3x with in 20 min. my wireless shut off. Then it stayed on all night no problem. I week goes by it starts up again and stops again. Then i went to the genuis bar again and they checked it out left it over night didnt happen to them at all they said so I took it home. Happened to me the first 10 minutes i had it up!!! Happened a few more times that night but then it stopped that was a month ago. Then yesterday it happened again only extremely agressive every few minutes all day and night i was re booting my laptop to get my wireless to work. So I downgraded my software to snow leopard. Well hours into it BAM nothing im all smiles and happy................................until is dropped AGAIN just a couple of minutes ago. As I look this issue up there seems to be a TON of users out there with this EXACT problem and yet not a single fix. Some get it fixed by changing something and yet it doesnt work for others its insane. We spend all this money on our Mac's and when we call or go in we are told we are nuts that there is nothing wrong with them. So please PLEASEif you have a fix share it here
    Thank you guys
    Nick

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.

  • Why does my wireless keyboard keep shutting off?

Why does my wireless keyboard keep shutting off?
    It is not the batteries.

More experience leads me to believe the problem is with the new iMac.  If I get the network going by turning AirPort Extreme power off, then on, I see a good signal at my iMac. Experience shows the network drops off after several hours. But yesterday I turned the iMac off, and the network remainded up (I could see it on my iPhone and iPad) throughout the night.  That's the first time that has happened since I got the new iMac.  Never had this issue with the old machine. I transferred all file to the new machine from a Time Machine backup that was up-to-date.  Am working with Apple support. They had me do a re-boot of the AirPort and will call back tomorrow AM to learn it did not solve the problem, but turning off the iMac does.  Darn.

  • MacBook Pro is shutting off my home wireless network

I've been reading through some of the other MBP wi-fi issues but couldn't find anyone discussing what I'm dealing with so I wanted to put this out there.
I got a MBP earlier this week and, it seems like after powering down or shutting the MBP and reopening it, my wi-fi network at home shuts down or isn't recognized.  When this happens, I have to unplug my airport extreme and turn the internet on and off on my cable router so the wi-fi signal can be recognized on my wireless devices.  It's not just the MBP (running Lion 10.7.3) that can't find the wi-fi when this happens; my MacBook (running OSX 10.5.8), my TV with wi-fi and my wife's iPhone lose their signals also.  The airport extreme and my cable router still are showing that they're running when this happens (green light on airport).
It only seems to happen when the MBP has been powered down or closed.  Not sure if it has something to do with the airport extreme router that's in the MBP.  It doesn't seem that anything is actually turning off the airport extreme but none of the devices can recognize the wi-fi signal after this happens.  Turning off and on the airport from either of the computers doesn't seem to do anything.  It requires a reboot to the airport.
    Any thoughts on this?

linc davis - the MBP does connect to the wi-fi network.  I haven't had any issues yest with MBP automatically disconnecting from the wi-fi (as i've read other people have had).
I've really only noticed it as an issue when the MBP was shut down or closed.  in those times, it seems that the wi-fi network is being shut off for everything in my house (not just the MBP).  for example, i left my MBP on while i was out of the house.  it went to sleep but i didn't shut it so everything was fine when i woke it up to get online just now.

  • Telephone calls shut off wireless

    Hi,
I have an Airport Express and I use it with my iBook G4. The wireless works fine until I get a phone call on my house phone. As soon as someone picks it up or makes a call, the wireless shuts off. It's incredibly annoying, considering I get constant phone calls. Is there any way I can stop this from happening?
Thank you so much for your time.

If per chance your house phone is a cordless 2.4 MHz model, you can try changing wireless channels on your AirPort Express Base Station (AX) until you can find one which will work. You can also check to see if your cordless phone has the option to change channels as well.

  • Shutting off Internet Access after 10PM

My teen-age sons are at the age where they want the independence of making their own choices, and resent my telling them what to do and when to do things. I am trying to encourage them to plan their play time and work time so that they get their work done before it gets too late and "have to" stay up late to finish (because they spent their time doing non-school stuff on the Internet).
The message that the Internet will be disconnected at 10PM has been heard load and clear now that dad pulls the cable out of the DSL interface, stuffs the cable in his pocket and goes to bed. They are getting much better at front-loading Homework and leaving discretionary web surfing etc. until later. After 10PM (with the Internet disconnected, but the Server still running) they can still access their user accounts, type their papers, and print. But the Internet is not available, and game time and chat time is over.
I am fishing for a more automatic way to "turn off the Internet at 10PM", so that I don't have to stay up until exactly that time and physically pull the cable and carry it away.
I am running Server 10.3 at the moment, but have Server 10.4 DVD and am planning to install it sometime soon. Workstations are running 10.4, and are in a largely public area (not buried in out-of-the-way places with no potential for oversight).
I welcome all suggestions, including those not involving computers at all!

All this cabling and re-cabling caused me to re-configure my Routers and Switches, which threw my Internet connection offline. In attempting to get it working again, I went back to the actiontek Router that Verizon FIOS provided originally. The actiontek's power supply had failed, and I had dropped back to a previous Router. Verizon later sent a replacement Power Supply, even though the unit was out of warranty.
When I went to configure the actiontek Router, I noticed that there were a lot of options to restrict access for just certain users, and to restrict actions based on time. There were options for both content-filtering (which I am not currently using) and Firewall-based restrictions, many of which could be based on time-of-day and day-of-week.
Once I set the Router's date and time, and allowed it to be updated from a network time server on the Internet, I was able to set up a set of FireWall restrictions for every day of the week. At 10 PM, it disallows traffic through the Firewall, and keeps it off until noon the next day. Now everyone in the house knows the Internet shuts off at 10 PM, and no manual Intervention is required. If you have not completed your homework by then, your Internet time is over regardless.
Verizon FIOS customers and actiontek Router users reading this should check for these features in your Router -- you may already have the solution in hand.

  • My ipad is froze with the following message "Cannot Access my Friends" Open the app and review your information.  Unfortunately I cannot open/close or shut off my device ...

Has anyone run into this situtation?

I have the same problem on my iPhone4. It is obviously a bug in the software. Once it pops out I am locked out of my phone. I can't even begin to describe the frustration this causes. All that stuff about holding down the buttons is useless. the phone won't even shut off. I can take a screen shot like that or go to voice control. Even when I got to a wifi connection, I can't get on. This app blocks everything else. This is a serious bug and can have serious consequences. The only thing my phone would do is go to voice control and let me play iTunes or phone people. Some smart phone hey?
I have finally got to a place with a wide enough wifi to connect my computer and restore the phone. This has lasted over a day!
I don't even know why Find My Friends is on my phone. Is it part of the package and how do I turn it off?

  • How do I set up a Apple TC with a Verizon FIOS wireless modem model  Actiontec 424wi F series.  Does the wifi in the modem have to be shut off and will it effect the FIOS tv?

How do I set up an Apple TC with a Verizon FIOS wireless modem model MI424wr F.  Does the wifi have to be turned off in the modem and then bridge it to the TC?  Will FIOS tv be effected?

Your first call should be to Verizon support to ask them if you turn off the wireless on the Actiontec router....will it affect any of the features/functions of the FIOS system?
If yes, then it would be best to leave the Actiontec router "as is" and connect the Time Capsule using Ethernet in Bridge Mode as a back up device only (wireless is turned off on the Time Capsule).
If you want to use the dual band (and likely much faster) wireless capability of the Time Capsule, then you should turn off the wireless on the Actiontec device to help prevent wireless interference effects that will likely occur when two wireless routers are in close proximity to each other.
Again, the Time Capsule would be connected to the Actiontec router using an Ethernet connection from one of the LAN <-> ports on the Actiontec router to the WAN port (circle icon) on the Time Capsule. Configure the Time Capsule in Bridge Mode as well in this type of configuration.
Bottom line....what Verizon says will pretty much dictate how you can set up the TIme Capsule.

My email was a white blank screen on my ipad.  Thinking I needed a software update, I tried to shut it off.  Now all I have is a black screen and the "working" logo in the center, but it won't shut off.
    Any ideas?

When you reset the iPad, wait until the Apple logo appears on the screen before you let go of the buttons.
Hold down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
