Sick dual 1.0Ghz MDD

I inherited a snazzy dual 1.0ghz G4 MDD and am having trouble diagnosing it's ailment. It chimes when powered on, I can hear the HD spin up, but after about 8-10 seconds the fans spin up to full speed, nothing comes on the screen at all and the fans just continue to spin at full RPM.
One of the processors has a small amount of brown goo caked on near the die (not on the surface, just next to it - similar to the goo that oozes from a capacitor that's blown) and I was able to remove all of the crusty thermal paste and reapply new paste but the same thing happens when I try to start it up. I know little of the machine's history except that the person who owned it was attempting to install the OS at the time it crapped out.
If anyone has had a similar experience or knows what might be wrong please lend a hand. I'd like to be sure of the problem before I rush out and but a replacement MB or CPU.
Thanks!
Dual 1.0Ghz MDD   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Ewww...sounds bad. I've had that happen once. You see, the fans are controlled by the CPU's temperature, and the faster they move, that means the hotter the chip is. Also, that dried out thermal paste was either caused by, or the cause of your problem, as it is either a sign of excessive heat or non adequate heat protection. Sorry to say this, but I think the CPU is fried. That explains the rapid acceleration of the fans. I COULD be wrong, but that is normally what the syptoms describe. I'd have it checked out by a mac genius, as he can give you a more definate answer. If that's the case, you're gonna need a new CPU, or maybe a new logic board.

I downloaded Firefox 4.0 and It will not run on Mac OSX 10.5.8, on a Mac G5 dual 2.0ghz. Now my older version of Firefox is gone...Why won't it work, the download page says it is for OSX and does not say it will not work on any particular OSX. Can your clarify. And can I get the old Firefox 3 back or should I continue using Safari....?

Yes I've read every one of them, none of them provide solutions whatsoever, I have spent about ten hours on this site in the past two days to no avail, none of the "resolved" threads provided any sort of solution for me, I have tried everything suggested on this website so far, multiple times, to no avail.

  • G5 dual 2.0Ghz bought in 2003+ 30" cinema display?

    Hi all.
I bought the first generation G5 dual 2.0Ghz in 2003 and am sure that I have Radeon 9600 pro video card installed in the computer. Currently, I am thinking of buying 30" cinema display and did some research on it's specification.
I found that Radeon 9600 pro: pc/mac edition is compatible with the monitor, but I am wondering if the 9600 pro version can support the monitor.
If it can't, would anyone like to recommend a good graphic card except 9600 pro:pc/mac edition? Ugrading from original 9600 to 9600-pc/mac edition just sounds like a waste of money because of their similarity of specifications.
Any responce would be greatly appreciated,
    Thanks..
    KYE

To find out if your Mac already supports a 30" 2560x1600 resolution, go to the monitor resolution icon at the top of your Finder/menu bar on your desktop. Click on the icon and explore the various resolution possibilities. If they go all the way to 2560x1600 your good to go. No need to buy another card.
Unfortunately, I purchased a similar model in '04 and it does NOT include a sufficiently good enough graphics card to power the 30" [I was told by the apple dealer in '04 that it did. It doesn't.]
My research in to graphics card options for 'our' situation is as follows:
Low End: Radeon 9600 Pro Mac & PC Edition [$199]
Mid Range: Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Edition* [$250]
    High End: Redeon x800 [$399]
I don't think the Rad9800 can drive more than 2048x1536. This might be satisfactory for you, it's not quite the maximum of 2560x1600, but your menus will be a little bigger at 2048x1536
    Good luck.
My question to no one in particular is: did all early PowerMac G5 towers ship with AGP 8x slots? or 4x slots? or what?

  • Jumper Settings for Second SATA-II drive Installed Into Dual 2.0Ghz G5

I have installed a second SATA-II 500GB Maxtor drive into a brand new (purchased as re-furbished computer from Apple) dual 2.0Ghz PowerMac G5. The drive has four connector pins with a jumper slide over the last pin on the right. Before I power up the computer I want to verify the correct jumper settings. According to the Maxtor website, no jumpers are required since the "serial ATA host automatically determines the master and slave hard drive." And according to a MacSales tech (this is the vendor where I purchased the Maxtor drive) I should pull off the existing jumper. Can anyone verify if this is, in fact, the correct jumper setting (no jumpers on the connector pins) for this drive on this system?
    G5 dual 2.0 Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Hello! From the Maxtor web site.
"PLEASE NOTE: Unlike standard ATA drives, Serial ATA drives DO NOT require the use of jumpers to configure the drive. Please disregard any references to jumper settings and Master, Slave and Cable Select configurations in the Maxtor Installation Guide."
I'd leave the jumper as is came when you got it. tom

  • 1.8Ghz & Dual 2.0Ghz Logic Boards/Power Supply

I have a perfectly fine working 1.8ghz G5. I also have a dual 2.0Ghz G5. However, the dual doesn't power up. I'm pretty sure it's the power supply. But, I'm not positive.
My question is. Is it possible to put the dual 2.0 logic board into my 1.8ghz machine? The inside of the cases look very similar. Or is there a way to test the logic board of the 2.0 before I take everything apart?
    Thanks..

The CPU speed of a PowerMac G5 is always 2x the bus speed or less. Thus, with the 900 MHz bus speed of the 1.8 GHz motherboard, your 2.0 GHz CPUs would clock down to 1.8 GHz at best.

  • Is there much difference btwn dual 1.8ghz and dual 2.0ghz

    Hi,
I have seen a dual 1.8ghz (M9454LL/A) second hand with this spec:
    Machine Type: Power Mac G5
    Machine Model: PowerMac 7,3
    CPU Type: PowerPC G5 (2.2)
    Number of CPUs: 2
    CPU Speed 1.8GHz
    L2 cache (per CPU): 512KB
    Memory: 1.25 GB
    Bus speed: 900MHz
    Graphics Card: GeForce FX 5200
ATA Bus (DVD): Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-117D
    Serial-ATA (hard-drive): Maxtor 80GB
for a good price around £800 which would leave me with money to buy a monitor.
This model already has airport built in and additional ram added.
I am a music producer (running digidesign protools LE) and need a studio computer to see me through the next couple of years. I have been looking at getting a dual 2.0ghz machine but these are invariably more expensive and I would have to pay to add the features this model already has, as well as purchasing a flatscreen.
Basically I want to know how much of a performance difference i will see between a dual 1.8ghz machine and a dual 2.0ghz machine.
    cheers guys

Ok that dual 1.8 is not much difference from a dual 2
Your dual 1.8 has a 900 Mhz front-side bus per processor
The dual 2 has 400 more Mhz total in CPU speed (not much really) and a 1000 Mhz frontside bus per processor.
    So the difference is minimal.
You could upgrade that video card to a AGP ATI X800 and 3D game all the latest ones with no problem. (I would before they are all gone)
If you get yourself another internal hard drive, something large like a 250-300GB SATA and keep your user files in there instead of on the 80GB Maxtor, your performance "feel" would be pretty good as well. (no Western Digital, they upgraded their SATA specs)
And you got a Superdrive, so you can burn dvds.
If time doesn't equal money, and your not constantly pushing your CPU's day and night, this machine is a good buy IMO. You should get a good 3-4 years out of it, especially if you know when to stop upgrading the OS/apps.
Yes I say you got yourself a good buy there.

  • Dual 1.42GHz MDD startup troubles

    Greetings Mac fans,
Just started having lots of trouble starting up my Pwer Mac dual 1.42GHz MDD. When I do get it to boot up the date is set to 1969 (a good year by the way).
Anyway, I suspect the battery on the logic board is weak.
What is the size/style/# of this battery so I can buy the right one at Radio Shack?
    Thanks!

Thanks Douggo. I went out to Radio Shack and got the battery today.
Had a bit of trouble replacing the battery because my NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4600 video card was blocking the battery slot. The card runs the full length of the machine, front to back, obstructing the easy extrication of battery.
While pulling out the card there was a spark and smoke from the AGP slot. I got real nervous 'cause I though I'd fried the card or slot! But thankfully the computer started up and the display works. What a pain just to replace this measly little battery.

  • G4 Quicksilver Dual 1.0Ghz...Louder then MDD Dual 1.25???

    Hey Guys,
    I have an odd question. I have a MDD G4 Dual 1.25Ghz and 2 QuickSilver G4s one a 733 and one a Dual 1Ghz.
The MDD G4 I was always told and remembered that they where loud wind tunnel machines, and made lots of fan noise. My MDD however barely is audible its great (Im sure it has the revised fan and PSU)
My 733 is also quiet, makes barely a noise. Now my Dual 1Ghz, thats a loud machine, its not really a pitch, it just the sheer speed the fans are moving, as if the machine wasnt designed for dual 1ghz processors to sit in it.
I even swapped the processors since the 733s case was in better shape, and still the fans are always loud.
Any fixes for QS cooling VS MDD which is all the stuff I can find?
    Thanks all

    Hi-
Replacement of the thermal pads with MX-3 or MX-4 thermal compound will increase the cooling efficiency and help reduce fan noise.
My DP 1 GHz QS quieted noticeably after thermal compound application.
    http://www.jcsenterprises.com/Japamacs_Page/Blog/9AE7FE0E-0CF2-4A7C-8003-489B282 582BC.html
The PSU fan in the QS can be a major noise maker, and replacing that fan with a quieter fan can really help.
A 4,000 RPM Verax (Globe Fan, distributed by Zaward) cools much better and is much quieter.
The 80 mm Vantec (TF8025) is also a very good option:

Use the Vantec TF6025 to replace the CPU fan for help there.

With care, you can manually open the optical drive tray. Pull open the outer door and use a good light to look at the front face of the drive beneath the hinged door. Somewhere there is a small hole, often under the tray, just slightly larger than a large paper clip's wire diameter.
Partially straighten a large paper clip and GENTLY insert the wire STRAIGHT into the hole. You should feel resistance after about 1/4 inch. Apply a little more pressure and the tray will start to move out. Grab it with your fingers and gently extend it all the way. I had to do this when I had the boot problems I mentioned.
Once you insert the System CD/DVD, push the tray closed and try to start, this time holding down the "C" key on your keyboard to force the computer to start from the optical drive.
BTW, be sure to check all internal cables for secure connections. As you're not even getting a gray screen, I'm getting a little concerned that your power supply has taken the long trail. When my MDD did the boot craziness, I at least got a gray screen.

  • MDD G4 (Dual 1.0ghz) Won't go to sleep...

    Hey all,
I've got a weird problem where all of a sudden, my G4 MDD won't go to sleep! it's been working fine, and I haven't changed or installed anything in the last few weeks. Selecting sleep from the apple menu doens't do anything.
I thought it might be a pram problem, since my clock was always getting messed up lately, when I rebooted, it would always say it was out of synch and at a really old date. This problem is now fixed, but I still can't put the computer to sleep.
Could this be a battery problem? Is there any way to check?
    I'm running 10.4.8.
    Any thoughts would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

This is for a Mac that won't sleep.
First, read things in Apple doc.#25801 on sleep settings.
USB devices and hubs often cause Macs to not sleep or wake quickly from sleep (notably HP printers and scanners, HP all in ones, and Cannon scanners). Disconnect all USB except for keyboard and mouse and try. If it sleeps, add one back at a time testing after each one to find the culprit.
If you've set your Mac to recieve faxes, it may not be able to sleep. It might also have a damaged preferences file.
If you use your Mac for faxing, open System Preferences. click Print & Fax, click the Faxing tab, and uncheck the Recieve Faxes On This Computer box.
If that does'nt work or you've never faxed on your Mac, go to Finder/Hard Drive /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist and com..apple.AutoWake.plist files (if your Mac asks, type your admin. password).
If the latter file isn't present in the folder, go to user name(probably your name)/Library/Preferences, delete the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file, and reboot your Mac.
    Hope this helps!
    P.S. One member here reported this (Michael Gleason);
"I have had this problem with my IMac G5. It is surprisingly irritating. LaCie's Silverkeeper backup software was the cause. By default it gave itself permission to wake up the computer to check if a backup was needed. Do you have this or a similar program installed which has scheduled activities including wake-up permissions as an option?"
Dave Hamilton provided this link, xlr8yourmac.com, to a member, which addresses failure of deep sleep with some users that updated and added new FireWire and USB cards.
tomhorvat adds this; After few days of messing around I found out that I had desktop background (wallpaper) set to change every 1 minute.
After unchecking "Change picture..." in system preferences (under Desktop/Screen saver), my powerbook went to sleep all by itself.
    Cheers!

Hi.. I’m fed up with all the hype about the new imac core duo being twice as fast as the imac g5 2.1ghz. A lot of the magazines are also saying yes the core duo beats the g5 at this, that, and the next thing. What I’d like to know is how would the core duo have compared in performance had Apple had put a dual core 2.0ghz g5 in the imac like it done with the power mac range.
    Just a thought
    Cheers
    Gerry

I'm curious about this too. In addition to what Gerald says, I note that there's also no mention anywhere of how the new dual core Intel processors perform as compared with, say, the Pentium 4 or whatever number they are at now.
As for the heat business, I see in MacFormat this month that IBM have announced a 4ghz - 5ghz powerpc chip. Apparently they have even tested one running at 6ghz, that they now plan to go in servers. So the PowerPC chip doesn't seem to be dying out now.
I am going to have to upgrade my 6500/300 sometime in the near future and as the Intel chips are going to force me to lose all my Classic software anyway, it seems sensible to work out what all the options are, if you get my gist.

  • Trade iMac G5 for Dual 1.25 MDD PowerMac for FCP??

Hey guys, I've gotten an offer to trade my iMac G5 for a MDD PowerMac G4. I'll show you the specs comparing the 2.
    iMac G5
    1.8 ghz
    17'' Screen
    1 gig of ram
    Tiger
    SuperDrive
    80 Gig Drive
    for
    PowerMac G4 (MDD) (WIND TUNNEL)
    Dual 1.25
    1 gig of ram
    Panther (I think)
    SuperDrive
    100 gig drive
    Geforce4 Graphics Card
Not sure if he will include a display..
Is this a downgrade? I have a problem with the expandability of the iMac, I've grown weary of it. I like the all-in-one design, room for it, but no room to put stuff in it. For FCP, the iMac's been doing a pretty good job, but I want to be able to put extra internal drives in, etc. Either direction I go, I'll end up replacing the computer in a year or 2.

    iMac:
    Bigger screen
    Fast processor
    Newer machine
    Newer, faster SuperDrive
    Self contained
    Better video card
Cons: no way to add a second internal hard drive or second firewire bus
    G4:
    Internal expansion for hard drives
    Can upgrade the video card
Can add a second firewire bus
    Large hard drive
    Can add more RAM
    Cons: older, slower, getting older.
It's your call. It depends on what you intend to do with the iMac or the G4.
Unlike everybody else, for video editing, I prefer an expandable cpu

    Eric,
What do you mean by "extra component on the 1.42 board" - I am running a dual 1.25 with a almost brand new copper heatsink and have been experiencing no problems at all. It was an easy fit for my processor. I don't know what you mean by this.
Sorry to say this...but read what I wrote (about the 1.42 board) and then read what you wrote. You don't have a dual 1.42 board, you have a dual 1.25 board. I didn't say that the copper heatsink wouldn't work with a dual 1.25. I said the first aluminum heatsink (with thick fins) will not work with the Dual 1.42 board, which you don't have. You cannot physically mount the first aluminum heatsink on the dual 1.42 board -- the heatsink smacks into a component (sorry I don't know what it's called) on the 1.42 board and you cannot mount/screw it down. The heatsink can't even make contact with the chips.
Put it this way, the copper heatsink will fit any processor 1.42, 1.25 single/dual, etc. However, the same cannot be said of the first aluminum heatsink. The first aluminum heatsink will not fit every MDD processor. It works with a dual 867, dual 1.0, and dual 1.25 -- I can attest to that because I've done it. But the first aluminum heatsink will not physically work with the dual 1.42. You cannot physically mount it on the 1.42 board. The base of the aluminum heatsink smacks into a component on the 1.42 board -- a component which doesn't exist on the other boards I mentioned. The copper heatsink makes allowances for that extra component -- having a cutout on the base so the heatsink can be mounted. On every other CPU board I've tried which doesn't have that extra component, there's no problem with the copper heatsink -- there's a cutout for something which doesn't exist on the other boards.
