Sick Ipod one minute, starting normally the next, plus gray scratches

Okay I am not sure which ipod I have. I do know it was the ipod which does not play full length movies and does not have the widescreen. About a month ago I noticed what appeared to be a scratch in the picture of the ipod screen, not a regular scratch and no surface scratch which could have inflicted it. For lack of better explanation it looked like it had been scratched from the inside. When I moved the click wheel the screen would light up as usual except for the spaces where it appeared to be scratched. They would appear gray/multicolored marks. At first I was freaking out since the scratching was pronounced and plugged my ipod into a wall charger hoping it would fix it to see some of the scratches fade but come back again off and on. Just today I was driving in my car about to listen to my ipod when it was working normally. I believe I left my car to run into a store and when I tried to turn the ipod on I saw an image of an ipod with x's for eyes and a sick look. I just tried again so I could accurately describe it and my ipod started up normally and I havent' charged it again or plugged it into any power source. Any ideas guys? I have a feeling I'll take it into APPLE anyway because this is too weird.

I would try:
- Another cable
- Inspect the dock connector on the iPod for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.
- on another computer to help deptermine if yo have an iPod or computer problem
- If a computer problem then:
- You can either backup your data and do a fresh install of Windows
- Restore your Windows to an earlier point i in before the problem started
- Wait for an update to iTunes
Yes yo can use a program like iFunBox to manually copy music and some other things to and from the iPod and computer.
Downgrading the iOS is not supported by Apple

Computer will recognize iPOD one minute but not the next!

I have the 60GB iPOD and have tried everything to get my computer to recognize it. I have a laptop running on Windows XP. It will recognize the iPod in the Itunes and on the computer for only minutes at a time, but then clicks off and loses the connection to my computer and won't come back until I restart my computer. Anyone have any useful information for this headache?!

Hi I have had similar problems with the ipod but think I know the problem without being techincal.
My Ipod sometimes would connect and sometimes not. I could not find a pattern besides a random one. However I looked at "my Computer" view where I could see the hardisks. When the ipod connected with a "removable disk" it would not work with Ipod and you could not get access to it.
Then I tiried and tried (always on the usb on the back of the computer) changing between the two connections.
When the computer then recognized it as the name I have given the ipod "JFR IPOD" it would then work with I tunes without any problems.
However .... this is the trick for me... when using the USB on my laptop and my wifes it works without any problems 20 out of 20 times....... Where I can see the Ipod in "my computer" as a disk named as my ipod and NOT just as removable disk.
This concludes for me that the USB on my computer - which is USB2 on a 3 year computer does not work as it should. I again assume that this is due to the fact that the IPOD is not powered by a remote source while being connected. This due to the fact that Maxtor USB2 transporable harddrives works without any problems whatsoever.
I now need to check if an external USB2 HUB with external powersupply will work on my computer. If that is not the case I need to try a Firewire connection and have it installed as a card.
All this was done by Trial and error but know I know that (apparently) is not due to a misfunctioning ipod.
Hope this helps for some of you. Bring the IPOD to a fairly new computer and connect is. If it then connects as a ipod with the name you have given it it will work with Itimes as well.

There is no reason to put it in DFU mode, a reset should work. Although, without a working power button it is not possible to reset the device.
Sounds like it is time to replace the damaged device.

Podcast Works on a web browser one minute and not the next.

We are having an issue with a Podcast working on Safari/Firefox one minute and not the next. Our teachers add Podcast to their web pages and then post it on our web server. Teachers, using Safari and Firefox, maybe able to open their podcast one day and then not the next. Has anyone had this problem? We have the most up-to-date Quicktime. Any information would be helpful.
We are running 10.4.9 on a Macbook.

My facetime and imessage are not working! They were literally were working one minute and not the next! I have reset (NOT RESTORED) my ipod, however these 2 apple apps are not working now, anyone have any idea why???

My ipod touch seems to have a few issues, however my pre-installed and updated imessage and facetime were literally working last night, and after a breif break to charge battery (the back of the ipod was SUPER HOT) wasn't able to do facetime or imessage, and am STILL NOT today, what gives?? Any suggestions and advice?.

Found the answer, at least for now! Thanks to roryjt, and having to search through tons of post on imessage and facetime issues! Changed the DNS on my ipod for my wireless network to 8.8.8.8 Not sure if it will work outside of my wireless network, but since its an ipod, not an iphone, I usually only use it in my place/on my network. Battery full one minute and empty the next.

This morning, I woke up and turned on my laptop and had a full battery. I opened my email and Safari, downloaded something from a friend and the battery went down to red and then went into Sleep mode.
What could have caused this?

For those running OS 10.4 and higher, you can check your current battery capacity in the Apple System Profiler.
Go to the Apple Menu in the top left corner, click on "About This Mac" and on the little window that pops up, go to "More Info".
In the Apple System Profiler, go down to the "Power" section and check your batteries "Full charge capacity". A new battery has a capacity of ~4500mAh. Also check how many charge cycles your battery has, which is in the same window of information. 300 cycles or close to that means your battery got a good, average charge life.

I had 68 charge cycles and my capacity was only ~1300mAh. I had to argue with Apple for them to replace it as batteries are a consumable item (even though mine was only 120 days old at the most).

If your ipod gets wet, it can cause the buttons to activate all by themselves. This can cause the volume to go up, down.
If you have a headset with buttons on the wire, check there first. Try a different set of headphones and see what the result is.
Finally, if the volume is changing a huge amount but only for certain tracks, there is an adjustment you can make on individual tracks in iTunes. Do a get info on one of the tracks doing this, then click the Options tab. Note that there is a volume adjustment slider. Make sure it is set to none.

Calc Script runs slow one day and fast the next?

We are on Essbase 11.1.2.1. When we run calc scripts to load our actuals and run some allocation scripts, the difference in running time for the same exact script is very different day to day. One day three hours the next 45 minutes. Our servers are just for Essbase. We are on Windows 2008 R2. Has anyone else run into this or have any idea how we could figure out the reason for this. In that case, I would try to grab the cube statistics - especially number of upper-level and input blocks, compression ratio and fragmentation (in EAS you can only see one of the two fragmentation statistics, 'Average Clustering Ratio', not 'Average Fragmentation Quotient') before each run, just to see if they're varying wildly. Also, if your calc scripts log summary information (is there a SET MSG command in them? If not you could try SET MSG SUMMARY) then Essbase will write high-level statistics on how much work was done to the application log.
You can see which cubes are loaded (and consuming memory) in the EAS treeview - if they have a check (tick) mark they are loaded. But you can also see current activity by right-clicking on the server in the EAS treeview and selecting Edit | Sessions. That will show whether there are other operations (loads, calcs, reports, restructures etc) occurring at the same time.
If none of the above give any clues and this is a virtual box (or you have SAN storage) you really will need someone who understands your infrastructure to help.

It happens randomly. I can be listening to a song, it finishes and then theres no sound. The track doesn't actually start at all. When i say skips i dont mean is in the middle of the song and jumps. I mean the ipod switches to the next track.
Format - All my songs have been ripped from CD's or downloaded from I-Tunes. I cant find the file type, sorry.
I had a look on the link but the symptoms dont link to mine. It happens randomly, not when im cycling or moving the divece nescessarily.

I think the issue is that iTunes (for whatever reason) thinks I have two Apple ID's.
also, to further complicate the issue, when i try updating the apps from my iPod the iTunes store is still recognizing my old hotmail Apple ID. So when I go to enter my password it won't accept because it doesn't match with the old Apple ID, even though it is the same account (just new Apple ID name).
I have tried signing out within the App Store and re-signing in with my Apple ID but it still brings up my old Apple ID name when I try to update.

Unfortunately, in your case, there isn't really a way to separate them as far as I can think.
You could try restoring from a backup, and choosing an older backup perhaps

Sounds like a case of entering an incorrect passcode over and over. Only fix is to follow the instructions in that article you reference, HT1212, and it may take a couple tries to get it to work right.
