Side bar auto expanding to fit longest filename in file dialog windows

This may sound like a small problem but I have been finding it quite frustrating and it seems to have been introduced with the introduction of Lion (OS 10.7). I use the Finders sidebar to quickly access project folders. Now the names of these folders are often quite long... Say 40 to 50 characters long. Now go to an application and select open, save, import, export, etc. anything that will bring up a file dialog window the I find the side bar automaticly expands to the width of the longest file name in the side bar. If I resize it and then access the dialog box again it is back to that massive size.
This never used to be a problem in snowleapord... Is there a way to fix this?

I'm on 8.2 and I can't get it to fail no matter how I select the desktop. I haven't tried it in 8.0, but I imagine that if this really is a bug, they did know about it and fixed it with 8.2. If this causes a real problem for you, I would suggest upgrading if you can.

    To a lesser extent, the same problems exists on all panels, whether they be in import window or elsewhere. Just look at the Folder panel in Library to see how much space is wasted in offsetting the subfolders. When this was pointed out to the relevant folk the reply came back that it was by design. Bad design, but we're pi...g into a head wind trying to get it changed.

  • Side bar and 10.5.8

    After installing 10.5.8 the side bar lists only devices but "shared items", "places", and "search for" have disappeared. Why did the side bar "places" that included frequently used applications and files disappear? Is it a problem with 10.5.8 update.?

    Move the com.apple.finder.plist file out of /Users/username/Library/Preferences/ to the Desktop, OPTION-click and hold the Finder's Dock icon, and select Relaunch. Now, reset the Sidebar preferences and open a window.

  • File dialog box: how get  full path and filename

    Hello All
    i have a problem to save the full path and filename with file dialog box.
    I want to save full path and filename in the database for creating a link to a file.
    I use a file-dialogbox to choose a file.
    I see in the textfiled something like this
    \FULLPATH\filename.ppt
    but when i save the textvalue in the database or look at the seesionvalue I see
    this:
    F2087258868/filename.ppt
    but I need the full path to create a link. How I can get?
    I use version 2.2.1..
    Thanks
    Putcho

    Hi Putcho,
    You can create some javascript that puts it into a hidden item.
    In HTML Form Element Attributes: onChange="$x('P15_X').value=$x('P15_FILE').value;" Then create another process that stores the value of the hidden item in your own table...
    I quickly made an example with a normal text item, so you see it copies itself to the other box: http://apex.shellprompt.net/pls/apex/f?p=286:15
    Hope that helps,

  • Is it possible to reduce the web page to fit the window? Therefore loosing the need for the side bar sliders

    Although I have two screens I still need to keep my windows quite small and I was wondering if it was possible to automatically reduce the size of the web page to match the size of the available space in the window instead of having side bars sliders so if I needed to read text then I could just increase the window size and the web page would expand accordingly.

    Enable audience for that webpart. Keep users who have access to that list\library :)

    When in the print module with "Auto-Rotate to fit" selected, A landscape images correctly rotates to fit the page, but the text that is selected in the "Photo Info" setting does not rotate. Thus, the text appears along the left side of the image .

  • Permanently make Finder columns as wide as longest filename in Lion?

    In Lion you can place the cursor over a column dividing line, then do a Ctrl-click and thus have some choices to adjust the column width.
    That's fine - but does not solve my problem: I wish columns to be just as wide as the longest filename - always.
    Is there a way (e.g. setting or a Terminal commando) by which you permanently (also in a new Finder window and after restart) can have such a full column width?

    Just in case this is still an issue, let me provide you the following options:
    Double-clicking on the "handle" at the right of a column will quickly resize the column to fit the widest file name. We all know this. The knowledge you're missing is that holding Option while dragging a column width sets that custom width for every future Finder window. You can even fix all your columns at once with a right-click:
    Control (Right) click on any column handle to reveal three choices (as follows): Right Size This Column, Right Size All Columns Individually, and Right Size All Columns Equally.
    The first selection is the same as the manual (ie sizing to the longest name); the second, sizes the same for each individual column; and the third, takes the widest column and applies it to all, no matter what.
    Now go! Be happy with your Mac!

  • Why most of the pages of my site are named "About me" if none have that name in the side bar nor in the inspector?

    Here is my site for you to see what I am talking about; http://www.minkstereo.com  after you enter, if you go to each of the menus you will notice that only Books and Ilustrations is named correctly in the tab, if you go to Drawings, Graphic Design, Crafts or any of the images you'll see that the page name is "About me" I have republished and check all over the page in iweb and I don't know why it is happening. Each page has a different name in accordance with the content both in the side bar and in the inspector it shows.
    Any help is appreciated thank you.

    Your images shows how to change the pagename, the filename. of the page.
    Not the browser title.
    Anyway, there is a textbox out of view that holds the title :
    Beats me what it is doing there, but here is the oft repeated explanation :
    iWeb uses the textbox in the Header layer of an iWeb page as the title in the browserwindow.
    If the textbox in the Header is missing, iWeb uses a textbox down the page in the Content layer. If that textbox is also missing, it uses another textbox. If that fails it uses the pagename in the Sidebar. To replace a missing textbox in the Header, choose another theme and then change it back to the original one.
    Sometimes you may want a different text in the titlebar and not display it on the page itself. Or not display it at all.
    So use that textbox in the Header layer. Type your text. Do Command-T to open the font palette and make the font smaller (Or do Command--(minus)). Then select the textbox. In the Inspector choose T, click a color to open the color palette and drag the opacity slider to 0 (zero).
    Resize the textbox. You may want to change the height of the Header layer.
    Do Command-Shift-B to move the textbox to the back, possibly behind other objects.
    Next add a optional second textbox to the Header layer and use that one to display text on the page.
    If you want to move the textbox to the front again to make changes, but can't remember the location on the page, drag the area with the mouse to select the objects.
    Deselect objects you do not want to move forward by Command-dragging  the mouse over these objects.
    Next do Command-Shift-F to move the textbox to the front. Repeat the steps in reverse order to make the text visible.

  • Website help: Creating a side bar then the main part of the webpage??

    Hi guys, im currently making a website in dreamweaver but ive coe into some problems and theyve got me stumped...
    basically, i have been using dreamweaver and ive managed to create a side bar for my website with separate div tages etc and now i want to create the main body of the page, eg the menu and the images but i cant get it do do what i want it to do...
    when i insert the div tag for the main body part of my page it is placed above the side bar when i want it to the side of it, inline with it.... /: its fustrting cust ive been able to style all of the side bar and ive wanted to complete the rest of the site but currently im unable to...

    OK, here is how you need to look at your page:
    The outermost defined area is the body. Generally, to set up a website, you create basic "applies to all" stuff in the body definitions in your style sheet:
    For example:
    body {
              font-family: "Lucida Sans Unicode", "Lucida Grande", sans-serif;
              color: #000;
              background-color: #FFFFFF;
              margin: 20px 0;
              padding: 0px;
    That's going to create normal paragraph text in the website as Lucidia Sans (or Lucidia Grande if the client doesn't have that defaulting to sans-serif if that is not available), text color is black, background is white, top margin is 20 pixels, clear left and right margins and clear all padding.
    Now, you need to enclose the "website" into something that encases everything and I usually call that an outer wrapper.
    .outer-Wrapper {
              width: 80%;
              max-width: 1260px;/* a max-width may be desirable to keep this layout from getting too wide on a large monitor. This keeps line length more readable. IE6 does not respect this declaration. */
              min-width: 780px;/* a min-width may be desirable to keep this layout from getting too narrow. This keeps line length more readable in the side columns. IE6 does not respect this declaration. */
              background: #FFF;
              margin: 0 auto; /* the auto value on the sides, coupled with the width, centers the layout. It is not needed if you set the .container's width to 100%. */
    Explanations in comments.
    Now, you set up the rest of your page:
    .header {
    #nav {
              margin-left: 20%;
    /* ~~ These are the columns for the layout. ~~
    1) Padding is only placed on the top and/or bottom of the divs. The elements within these divs have padding on their sides. This saves you from any "box model math". Keep in mind, if you add any side padding or border to the div itself, it will be added to the width you define to create the *total* width. You may also choose to remove the padding on the element in the div and place a second div within it with no width and the padding necessary for your design.
    2) No margin has been given to the columns since they are all floated. If you must add margin, avoid placing it on the side you're floating toward (for example: a right margin on a div set to float right). Many times, padding can be used instead. For divs where this rule must be broken, you should add a "display:inline" declaration to the div's rule to tame a bug where some versions of Internet Explorer double the margin.
    3) Since classes can be used multiple times in a document (and an element can also have multiple classes applied), the columns have been assigned class names instead of IDs. For example, two sidebar divs could be stacked if necessary. These can very easily be changed to IDs if that's your preference, as long as you'll only be using them once per document.
    4) If you prefer your nav on the right instead of the left, simply float these columns the opposite direction (all right instead of all left) and they'll render in reverse order. There's no need to move the divs around in the HTML source.
    .sidebar {
              float: left;
              width: 20%;
              background-color: #cccccc;
              padding-bottom: 10px;
              color: #FFF;
    .content {
              padding: 10px 0;
              width: 80%;
              float: left;
              color: #000;
    Lastly, you want your footer to be below both columns, so you define that:
    .footer {
              padding: 10px 0;
              position: relative;/* this gives IE6 hasLayout to properly clear */
              clear: both; /* this clear property forces the .container to understand where the columns end and contain them */
              background-color: #eeeeee; /*This makes it gray so that it is separated from the rest of the page, but isn't too dark for black text */
    Now, let's go to the html:
    Define your page. Dreamweaver will allow you to define a page as XHTML 1.0 transitional or strict or XHTML 1.1, HTML 4.01 transitional or strict or HTML5. Older versions of Dreamweaver have no HTML5 and may have older versons of HTML, but I either use XHTML 1.0 transitional or HTML5. There are good reasons for this.
    Dreamweaver will set up the site definitions depending on what you choose above the <head> area.
    Within the <head> area, you define the character set, give a title (make it unique for each page in your website) and point to your style sheet. You can use Dreamweaver's "Attach stylesheet." Any calls to JavaScript go here as well. If you have a separate style sheet for a drop-down menu structure or any other navigation, it will go there as well. Remember to close the <head> tag.
    Now, we define the body and go into the page:
    <body>
    <div class="outer-Wrapper">
    <div  ="header"> Header Goes Here</div>
    <div id="nav">Navigation placed here</div>
    <div class="sidebar">Your sidebar will go here</div>
    <div class="content">Your main content goes here and it will live to the right of your sidebar on the left</div>
    <div class="footer">I generally put the copyright information here and sometimes additional navigation in the footer</div>
    <div> <!-- Ends the outer-Wrapper -->
    </body>
    </html>
    This will absolutely work.

  • Missing Horizontal scroll bar in Side Bar of Firefox 4

    When I use the FF4 Side Bar for my Bookmarks, I cannot see many of my '''Sub-Folders or read long link names''' because there is '''no Horizontal Scroll Bar'''. Instead, I must '''manually widen''' the Side Bar to see the longer link names or expanded Sub Fldr content. I do have a vertical scroll bar. There is no Horizontal Bookmark in the "Show All Bookmarks" either. I would think there would be a Horizontal Scroll Bar too for expanding the Trees. In CSS usage, that's practically basic Web Page design.

  • Auto expand of layout or reports

    Hi, I have developed a report which prints a bill on a letterhead, as a developer i designed it in such a way that the contents do not cross beyond one page (keeping in mind the maximum data) but when the user selects some data its shrinks(i made the frames vertical variable) but i wish to auto expand so as to fit the page entirely (putting anchoring object make it look empty in places). Does someone has a solution.

  • Displaying button images in the side bar

    Hi guys,
    I'm just finishing my first web site and i have noticed some problems with my side bar when i viewed the site in Safari.  While i was developing i was only
    checking firefox and IE. The site is www.becom.ie.  On the CCTV page my buttons in the side bar have moved across and are occuping space in main content.  I just cannot see what is causing the problem with the side bar buttons.  They seem fine on every other page.
    I have also fixed the problem you'll see with the header. I have added a float left property to the left image and every thing seems to be displaying ok.  I just have to FTP the new changes to the header.

    What I see is that you put in a </div> after the  "Product DVR 400 Series".  That causes the next <div id="images">  with its larger width as well as no float: right causing it to position to the left margin.
    If you were to add a float: right to your #images, it should bring the balance of the page back into alignment.
    Also, your #maincontent has a width of 760px, but your #images has a width of 960px.  I don't think it will hurt to keep it at 960.
    Hope that helps.

  • Is there a way to make the last column in finder auto expand?

    I know that you can double click the double bar at the bottom right . . . but can't the finder be set to auto expand on the last column so i don't have to click that thing every time i wish to see the long named files ?
    Perhaps i should just use Bridge but it seems so slow and cumbersome compared to Finder.
    thanks for any advice.
    PS . . . is this available on the newest OS . . . going to upgrade one of these days.

    No, the finder's column view does not have auto resizing columns.
    It does have auto condensing of file names for the narrow display.
    Which is what you are trying to overcome.
    To accomplish your task, switch to list view.
    Select your file. Then switch back to column view.
    The trick is to learn your FINDER command key short cuts.
    command 1 = icon view
    command 2 = list view
    command 3 = column view.
    So you would press [command] and [3] to view the columns.
    Navigate about until you get a column of unhelpfully condensed names.
    Switch to list view by pressing [command] and [2]
    Select the file from the fully displayed names list.
    At this point you can press [command] [down arrow] OR [command] [o] to enter/open the selected item;
    or Switch back to column view by pressing [command] and [3] then continue browsing deeper.

  • Side-bar: Thought I'd share...

    I was looking to get an effect similar to the side bar in Internet explorer, with a close button, and elegant expansion/retraction.
    Partly by accident, I hit upon a nice little combination:
    JSplitPane, containing the SidePanel on the left.
    Make the SideBar panel a GridBagLayout. Use some padding in the layout to set the minimum size.
    Add a JMenuBar to the top of the SidePanel
    Set the JMenuBar layout to border layout.
    Add a JMenu to the WEST part of the JMenuBar, and set the label to the label of the SidePanel. This serves dual function as title and speed menu
    Add a JButton("X") to the EAST part of the JMenuBar. Turn off border and focus painting, and set the margins to (2,4,2,4)
    Make the split pane one-touch expandable
    I thought the end effect was quite pleasing (see screen-shots retracted, expanded, menu extended). A bit more tweaking and this could be made quite elegant. I particularly liked the effect of the GridBagLayout padding - the SplitPane used this information to resist being undersized, which meant that clicking on the retracted edge of the pane instantly resized it to the minimum size, and the pane can't be shrunk too much by dragging the border.
    Anyway, I was quite pleased with the effect. Hope it helps someone.

    Not bad. First, the only thing I would change is using a TableLayout. Gridbag layout is just too complicated for my tastes. TableLayout allows a lot more dynamic control, including adding/removing rows/columsn. In the example you gave, if you set the SplitPane left component to a JPanel that has a TableLayout, you can use a single column multi-row layout, perhaps like so:
    double[][] leftLayout =
    {TableLayout.MINIMUM},
    {20, TableLayout.FILL},
    TableLayout tl = new TableLayout(leftLayout);
    JPanel leftPanel = new JPanel(tl);
    splitPane.setLeftComponent(leftPanel);
    Now, when you want to collapse the left pane, listen for the change of the split bar and if it is to be fully collapsed, simply do:
    prevDividerLocation = splitPane.getLastDividerLocation();
    tl.setColumn(0,0);
    and to make it reappear:
    tl.setColumn(0,prevDividerLocation);
    I am not 100% sure this exact bit of code would do the trick, but I feel it offers a much easier and more flexible layout to more easily add components.
    Now, what would really be the shit is if you could get your component to do the Outlook thing, with vertical bars that can slide up or down, each revealing a panel of info. We did something like this before, although I was not the one who did it. I know we used grid bag layout and stuff. I am actually going to be creating a component like this for my own use in the not too distant future.
    Regardless, great work! Looks like a pretty kewl component. There are no doubt many ways to implement the same thing, who's to say anyone is better than the other. Just keep on churning out great components and combo-components like this for the rest of the java world to use!
