Sidebar folders keep disappearing

I have about 5 folders that I keep in the sidebar for easy access, and recently they're started to disappear. It's very frustrating as it ruins my work flow constantly.
I've tried deleting the Sidebar prefs and restarting but it didn't help.
Weirdly the only once that never goes when it resets is one from a Dropbox folder, this one always stays in place.
This doesn't happen after restarts, just seeminlg randonly.

Along w/the sidebar.plist file also trash the finder.plist file.  Repair permissions & restart your comp.  If the sidebar works to your perfection, empty the trash.

Have recently upgraded to Yosemite 10.10 on my Mac Pro 3.7Ghz QuadCore, and now all my sidebar favourites keep disappearing. Have tried various things to resolve this like trashing the .plist for finder and sidebar, but this has not helped. All the favourites folders are from my server which is a Mac Mini running 10.8.5.

  • Folders keep disappearing in Finder - they're still there but can't be seen

I have folders that keep disappearing from the finder, however, the folders are still there and I can find them in Spotlight and see them in my third-party browser, PathFinder.
I'll give the example, I have a Volume named Video. It is where I save all my FCP projects and related video files. When I opened the Volume, only about a third of my folders were there. First, I freaked, thought I lost all my work, then I did a spotlight search for one of the specific missing folders.
I searched "Encodes" in spotlight, the folder appeared, I clicked it, it opened in the Finder and when I check the full path info it shows as being located at "/Volumes/Video" - which is where it should be. But if I go to the Video volume in the Finder it is still not visible.
I opened PathFinder and went to the volume and the folder was right where it was supposed to be.
The folder is not hidden and my Finder is set to show invisible files anyway. Any ideas why it wouldn't be there or visible and what I can do?

    Hi,
I searched "Encodes" in spotlight, the folder appeared, I clicked it, it opened in the Finder and when I check the full path info it shows as being located at "/Volumes/Video" - which is where it should be. But if I go to the Video volume in the Finder it is still not visible.
Just a guess, but I wonder if you could have a "ghost folder" named Video in the /Volumes folder on your startup disk, with the missing items being stored there instead of actually being on the Video volume.
The /Volumes folder is supposed to contain only the "mount points" for mounted disk volumes, but sometimes an actual folder can mistakenly get created there, possibly as a result of a failed copy operation. If /Volumes contains a folder with the same name as a mountable volume, then the system might be unable to mount the real volume the next time without changing the name of the mount point by adding a number. This changes the filesystem path to the mounted volume, but doesn't change the name of the volume icon displayed on the desktop.
If you Get Info on a folder within Video that you CAN see in Finder, does the volume name in the full path have an extra number on it, something like "/Volumes/Video 1" ? That would be a clue that there is more than one place named "Video".
It's easy to check this by looking directly in /Volumes. First you should eject and then physically disconnect all external drives. /Volumes is a hidden folder, and the usual way of peeking into it is:
    Finder>Go menu> Go to Folder
    enter /Volumes and click Go
In your case, since your Finder is set to show hidden files, you could just look directly at HD>Volumes.
/Volumes should contain what looks like an alias to the startup volume. Don't touch this, or any other aliases. Do you also see any folders which are NOT aliases, with names similar to the disconnected volume, possibly with added numbers? If there is such a "ghost" folder, is your missing stuff in there?

  • Why do my Mac Mail smart folders keep disappearing

Each time I shutdown and restart my computer there seem to be a different listing of smart folders that are available.  I've moved and stored important emails in these folders and when they appear at random, it is hard to perform normal business functions.

Having the same problem - random messages just keep disappearing
A colleague noticed that messages are just vanishing from her inbox in front of her eyes. She was in the middle of reading one when it just disappeared! It doesn't show up in any searches or other folders. Sometimes they re-appear when she quits Mail and re-opens it, but sometimes they don't which is a huge worry. I've tried re-building mailboxes when they don't re-appear but no joy. She hasn't got any rules or filters applied.
Could it be anything to do with the 'compact mailboxes automatically' option in mail - preferences - accounts - advanced? It's greyed out so can't change it?
She's got an IMAP account and mail is controlled by an Exchange 2003 server. Recently upgraded her OS X to Snow Leopard as it was an issue on Leopard too. Posted the problem on the OS X 10.5 boards too but got no answers. Running out of ideas and i'm getting flack for not knowing what's going on or how to fix it.
Why are you doing this Mail, why?!

  • Sidebar folders don't "spring open" any more

I've seen this behavior on a number of Macs (including mine). At some point the ability to drag a file onto a Finder window sidebar folder and have that folder "spring open" to show its contents has disappeared. All other drag & drop works fine and the spring-loaded folders ability on all other folders (in Finder windows or on the Desktop) remains.
It's just the Sidebar folders that refuse to spring open. Note I can still drop items on those sidebar folders and have the dropped item moved (or copied).
My Intel iMac (OSX 10.4.6) now has this problem whereas my new Macbook works fine. I'm pretty sure there's some app I've installed that's pooched this. Im also pretty sure I saw this problem (and the answer to it) posted somewhere. Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Barry

    Barry,
Plist files contain instructions for recording and executing tasks associated with the the application or function that owns them. They can and do become corrupted. If you look in the ~Library/Preferences Folder you can usually guess what application or function the .plist serves by analyzing the file name. In your case com.apple.sidebarlists.plist was the suspect.
Proper identification of the appropriate .plist is not always so obvious, but for example com.apple.iCal.plist is the preference file for iCal. When an application malfunctions, removing the associated .plist file from the preferences folder to the Desktop is often the best first troubleshooting step.
If you have a problem with an application, Quit the application, find the associated plist file in the Preferences Folder, and move it to the Desktop as a first step in your troubleshooting procedure. Then log out/in or restart and re-evaluate the performance of the application.
A new default .plist file is automatically created in your Preferences Folder after you remove the recalcitrant .plist and initiate the log out/in restart sequence. You can expect default application behavior and you will have to reset some preferences. If the application or function returns to normal after removing the .plist file, it will prove that the original file was corrupt, and you can now safely trash the .plist file which you placed on the Desktop.
If the application or function is unsatisfactory, the original copy of the plist file which was placed on the Desktop can be safely returned to the preferences folder. Just allow the system to replace the newer plist.
If you are having problems with any aspect of OS X, experiment with deleting the appropriate .plist file. Plist corruption is common and .plist file deletion often cures many problems. Too many users try intricate solutions first and end up complicating their problem.

  • Space on boot volume keeps disappearing - crisis

One of my customers has a Mac Pro running OSX Server 10.4.9. It was installed last October and was running fine until a few days ago. It's running afp, firewall, nat, dhcp, dns, mail, print, web (for webmail) and windows services.
The only non-Apple things running on the machine are Now Contact/Up To Date server, Timbuktu and Retrospect. I have the same combination running on the same model hardware elsewhere without problems.
The boot volume had about 85gb free and mail has its own dedicated volume. The boot volume is not shared or used by anyone.
Then I had a call from the customer saying mail wouldn't send out. When I looked at the machine, the problem was that there was exactly 0 bytes available on the boot volume and postfix couldn't find queuing space.
I deleted all the rubbish - dmg files from various installs, other files 'parked' on the dekstop etc. and got back about 8Gb. I made a note to look at the machine on my next visit and thought that was it.
The 8Gb disappeared within a couple of hours. This time I looked a bit harder (partly because there wasn't any rubbish left to delete). Naturally, there were no files visible to finder that would account for the space used. My frantic but fairly superficial spin through ls -l in a terminal didn't show me any 'new' folders I didn't recognise. Looking at Activity Monitor, I saw that there was almost constant disk write activity going on, even though the users were apparently 'hands off' their machines. The only process using any cpu time was the Now Contact event server - so I pounced on it, thinking it was bound to be the culprit, being a buggy piece of software at the best of times. When I killed the process, the disk writing stopped.
I got on the phone to Now Software and they told me every place they THOUGHT the program wrote to - nothing. I restarted the machine and made sure the Now Software stuff wasn't running. Everything seemed stable, except I still hadn't figured out where the lost space was. However, it started again the next night.
Over the past few days I've been fightng a running battle to keep space above zero. I've now deleted everything in applications, utilities, library etc that I can live without and I've even gone as far as clearing every log file, but the space keeps disappearing. I'm now down to 150Mb and there's nothing left to delete so I have to find out where it's all really going to.
I have done a file search on all the usual combinations - visible/inivisible, created/modified/bigger than/smaller than etc but nothing stands out.
Is the server being attacked? I've shut down windows and web, and SSH was always switched off. I've been watching system.log without seeing anything obvious happening. The server has been restarted many times so it's not a virtual memory thing (I think).
I'm depsarate. Where should I be looking?
    Justin

Good grief. First of all, thank you very mich for introducing me to du.
Here's what I I learned (and it's obviously an accident since no-one on site would know how to do this deliberately):
There is a volume (a real hard drive) called Archive. It's got about 90-something Gb of stuff on it. There are also three other volumes but here's the thing about Archive. I failed to notice in my earlier quick scan that /volumes contains an item called 'Archive' AND an item called 'Archive 1' - each being about the same size. When, in the finder, I deleted a folder from Archive that they could live without, it was Archive 1 that got smaller as seen by du.
going cd /volumes/archive shows me just one folder (which doesn't exist on the real volume but did once).
going cd '/volumes/archive 1' shows me what appears to be all the folders that are supposed to be there (on Archive). I haven't trawled right through and done an entry-by-entry check.
On impulse, I've just loaded Workgroup Manager and looked at Sharing. Under 'All', the left hand pane shows the volumes I'd expect to see (and nothing else). Buuuuuuttttt....... under 'Share Points', the volume we know as Archive is called 'Archive 1' - with a custom afp name of 'Archive'.
What have they done? I don't know what to delete at this point; and the trouble is that I suspended backups last week (because the catalogue files were amongst the things I removed to get some space back). I'll have to do a manual backup of Archive, verify it, and then try deleting something and see what happens.
What I'd really like to know is what happened and how. For example, would anyone like to try and build a hypothesis whereby the server was brought up with Archive off-line, then, after some other event, Archive subsequently came on line? Is this how you might end up with two apparent volumes with the same name?

  • Contents of applications folder keep disappearing.

The contents of the applications folder in Finder keep disappearing.  I don't recall having the problem before and I can't pinpoint what might have prompted the issue. Restarting the computer does not always help, but shutting down and booting back up does. But it doesn't last. Applications appear as normal, then disappear again on moving away from Finder and going back in.  Anyone experiencing the same thing / or know how to solve? (MacBook Pro, Retina 13", OS X Yosemite)

I've seen this before (on this board and on my machine once) and the solution was to blow away the .DS_Store file for /Applications. So Launch /Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app and type:
    +rm /Applications/.DS_Store+
    +killall Finder+
When the finder comes back up, see if the Applications folder loads for you now.
As for the Applications folder in your Sidebar, most likely you removed it by accident. Its pretty easy to do, but also pretty easy to fix. Double click on your hard drive on the Desktop. In the window that appears, drag the Applications folder to the Places section of the sidebar. That should do it. Hope that helps...

  • My Yahoo emails keep disappearing on my iMac.

My Yahoo emails keep disappearing on my iMac. I see them one second then POOF! there gone. Sometimes I'll see the number count of unread emails but no emails are displayed (See below). I see them on iPhone and iPad no with no problems. I do use Spamarrest as a go between to help filter out spam that YAHOO SPAM FILTERS IS SUPPOSED TO DO,  but I dont think thats the problem since my iPhone & iPad are working fine. I think it is with the iMac but not sure what else to do. I have deleted the account and created a new one, sycronized, took it offline and then back again only to see that the problem is there again. The emails will randomly show up but as soon as I click away and then back again "POOF" they are gone or slipped on their invisability cloak.  This is totally weird.

Have the same problem. Have seen quite a few of my yahoo mails disappear & not reappear. Am unable to see them even in my yahoomail inbox or in the sent mail folders. Am worried if my mail account is hacked. Further, there are sounds that I keep hearing every now & then which seems like someone in the background is snooping in & checking items on my Mac.

Since upgrading to Mountain King my email folders have disappeared - any ideas how I can get them back?!!

Look along the left hand side of your Mail app.  That side pane has headings like Inbox, Sent, Trash as atandard,  There are also headings that say "Smart Mailboxes" and "On my Mac".  The On my Mac heading should contain the saved mail folders you had.  This keeps the mail you save on your computer.
If you find that heading, click on it and see the word "show" to the right. If you see it, click on the Show word and it should reveal your saved folders.

  • ITunes library keeps disappearing with network home directories&MacBookPro

I've been using iTunes with network home directories for years. My wife & I have network home directories on our Macs and we can log into any of our Macs with our network home directories. The actual iTunes Music folder is also on the network server and shared between our user accounts.
This has always worked fine with my G4 cube, my PowerMac G5 and my PowerBook. As long as I only open iTunes on one machine at a time, I can open it on any of my machines and everything works great.
However, with my new MacBook Pro, my library keeps disappearing and I have to reimport it from the XML file every couple of days. Seems to erase my iPod Shuffle too at the same time (maybe it's triggered by plugging in my iPod).
Any ideas? Is there an endian issue with the library?
I can't figure out how to get any feedback on what's happening. Is there a debug log file I can enable?
PowerMac G5, PowerBook, MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I've got one better...I imported all my CDs onto iTunes. Then I upgraded. Here is what happened...All songs remained listed, however when I would click onto a song, a ! mark appears in front of the check mark and a window pops up saying "song could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" Well this occurred on 75% of my songs. Apple info led me to believe I could use my iPod as a hard drive. So I tried hooking up the pod to my computer. Well, from 3688 songs, I was down to just over 200, so I guess that is an even higher percentage.
What iTunes did was made a folder in "my music" with years 1955 to 2007. In those different years folders are the CDs that were released in that year. They have to be opened, each individual song, and re entered to itunes. All this I discovered on my own. No help from Apple. Not to mention what a royal pain in the *** process, which I am still in the process of doing. And don't even get me started with Artwork

    any thoughts?

Before the long winded uninstall / reinstall hoopla, did you just try trashing your preferences? Might be all you need. You can do it manually of course but the free Preference Manager tool from Digital Rebellion handles it easily plus allows you to create preference set backups and more : http://www.digitalrebellion.com/pref_man.htm
