Sidebar Gone (Leopard)

I can't find any other things on the internet indicating users having a problem such as this. In Leopard, it is my understanding that sidebar is always on.
Somehow it has gotten turned off and I do not know how. I tried deleting ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist and relaunching finder, but to no avail. Finder also seems to be stuck in "Open New Window" mode, even though this is unchecked in Finder preferences. This is driving me nuts, can anyone help?

Apple calls the sidebar in Leopard the "Toolbar." You can toggle it for individual windows by hitting Command-Option-T, but I'm not aware of any way to turn it off. You might want to try re-installing the latest Combo updater, available here: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1054comboupdate.html

How do I get shared computers to show up in the sidebar in Leopard?

Still trying to come to terms with Leopard's way of doing things, and can't get shared computers to show up in the sidebar. I've never shared computers before, so need very basic instructions on how to do this. I thought I had set up for other specific computers to share, but nothing happens. Do they need to be using Leopard too?

All of the things that folks seem to be having problems with are broadcast or multicast based. If you're not seeing things, chances are really good it's because you're not seeing the broadcasts / multicast packets. Why? Donno... shouldn't be any different than Tiger and "works fine for me".
Here is how you see what multicasts are going on the wire (broadcast are just another type of multicast):
sudo tcpdump -nvvXi en1 -s 1500 multicast
When you do this, if it's the first time you've run sudo, it will give you a warning and ask for your password since this is a privileged command. The next time, it will only prompt you for a password (unless you ran it recently and your password is cached).
There are a few different types of broadcasts that you'll want to be looking for. Note: These are only examples of each type - there are multiple sub-types of these to advertise other details. I'm only giving generic descriptions of each - the packet data in yours will be different, but a similar format.

You'll see here my wife's macbook advertising its services. This data gets collected and put in the mDNSResponder cache for when you need it. It is also used to make stuff show up on your finder.

If you're not seeing these packets, you're not going to see anything in your finder.
Why would you not see them?
1) Your firewall is blocking them from going out from the system that is sharing data
2) Your firewall is blocking them from coming in from the system that is looking for the data
3) The necessary services are not started on either system
4) Your network does not properly forward multicast and broadcasts between hosts
I've posted a number of threads on how to figure out each of the above situations. An easy thing to check is to do a 'netstat -anp udp' and see if there is a *.XXX where XXX is the port number listed in each of the descriptions. If there is, your system is listening for the packets and I'd check the firewall. If there is not, your system isn't setup right to listen for them (double check your file sharing settings and options).

Where has the genius sidebar gone in itunes 11?????

apple removed the genius sidebar already in itunes 10. then after many complaints they brought it back. but with itunes 11 it's gone again!!!!! maybe i stop buying from itunes and switch to a more user friendly store... or just listen to music on the radio. hey, apple, you lose customers if you keep on removing good features!!!

Agree......and I spent 7 grand with you all last year...I read a little more. I'm sorry but I don't need help creating playlists. I like the system learning my habits and suggesting songs I migtht like. 90% of my music purchases stem from this functionalilty. Gone now.

Sidebar gone in iTunes for iMac

The sidebar is gone and I hate that. I know it was there a week ago and I remember getting it back but I can't figure out how!

Genius sidebar gone in favor of Ping sidebar

The Genius sidebar is gone in favor of the Ping sidebar (as of iTunes 10.0.1).
Unfortunate for me - I loved the Genius sidebar!
Apple, you created the Genius Sidebar. It was great. I discovered a lot of new music because of it - although often not buying directly from the sidebar, but later after some 'cross-clicking'.
So why throw away something good?
Also, I think it would be helpful to make Ping a little bit less intrusive - for all those old hogs like me who are not so much into online-socialising...

Eliminating the Genius Sidebar is absolutely nonsensical from a business and customer relations perspective. Genius was becoming a viable option to Pandora and other music sites for identifying new music which was consistent with my musical tastes, and I was making an increasing number of my purchases directly through the sidebar. I will also be deleting the new version of iTunes and attempting to reinstall an earlier version with the Genius sidebar. Failing that, I will return to other sites to acquire new music. Way to go, Apple! You used to be known for your business savvy and customer focus. What happened?

IPad music A-Z sidebar gone

Not sure why the A-Z sidebar is gone after my iPad synced with new music in iTunes. I tried to delete the music and re-sync but no luck to get the sidebar back.
This is how my music app looks like.The A-Z sidebar on the right side is gone, songs no longer grouped under its starting alphabet (although they are still in alphabetical order), e.g songs started with A no longer groupped under 'A' and songs started with B no longer grouped under 'B'

Has anybody experienced this issue? How to make the A-Z sidebar appears and songs are grouped under its first alphabet on the music app?

There are no dumb questions when the problem itself is dumb. So, yes, I'm sure I was signed into my Apple ID. I signed out and then back in before.

I only have one ID, which i used to buy that song on my iPad, which no one has access to. So it must have been mine, right?

UPDATE:
My little brother syncs up his iPod to my iMac with my iTunes. When he buys music, he uses my login but pays with his credit card. On a hunch, I checked his iPod, and there was the song! He suspects it must have been some syncing error.
Question: if I bought it on my iPad and synced to my iTunes, why did it delete it from both places and then sync it to his iPod? And why would the iTunes Store act as though I never bought it in the first place?

Sidebar Gone, Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit

After installing windows, my system installed a bunch of updates.
After the updates, my sidebar dissapeared.
I tried a few things i found online... Like registering the libraries again, deleting a registry entry, but nothing works.... Any ideas?

Finder search opening in new window and sidebar gone

Hi, just wondering if anyone could shed some light on this cause I'm quite lost.
First of when hitting Command-F in the Finder it opens up in a new window, I'm pretty sure it didn't do this before. Opening folders does not open in new windows. Using the "Go" menu also has the same behaviour. However it's not really a big issue.
Secondly and this is what's irritating me the most, the sidebar disappears when doing this. Toggling the sidebar and closing the window and starting a new search makes no difference, still no sidebar.
I have done some pretty major changes to my system recently, and even if I don't really see why it would have effects like this (havn't noticed any other changes). What I have done is that I have moved /Users/* to a separate volume and is mounting the volume as /Users using fstab.
I tried experimenting a little with com.apple.finder.plist and removing the file (i.e. letting finder recreate), this caused the sidebar to appear, however adding:
<key>CreateDesktop<key>
<false />
Made it disappear again, freaky if you ask me... I have had the desktop off for ages without any problems so don't see why it wont work any longer. Or if it only has to do with this key and not also others.

Okay, this is wierd (and embarrasing), everything suddenly started working again after days of not working... Did nothing I can think of, only thing that I have done actively is that I have defaulted property list and restarted Finder multiple times. I even reverted back to the old property list and it still worked, maybe some cache problem? (which I didn't think of till now) but otherwise I don't know, thanks for reading my question at least .

Genius sidebar gone with update 10.0.1

Does anyone know how to enable the genius sidebar, as it has completely disappeared after the update and replaced by the Ping sidebar, which I don't find any use for?

Sidebar Gone after Security Upgrade

I did the latest security upgrade this morning. When I restarted my computer, I couldn't get my folders from the Finder icon in the dock. A sidebar-less window comes up showing only the Users (little house) folders. There are no "dots" or anything to make this window correct. Please help me fix this.

Thanks for your quick reply. Most boxes are checked in the Finder > Prefs > Sidebar and it makes no difference; the sidebarless window comes up with the Home folder even when I uncheck it.
You have given me an idea, though. I opened a Test account and the Finder Dock icon opens with the sidebar there. So it must be an issue with my account rather than the whole system.

Genius suggestions sidebar is gone in iTunes 11

Am I missing something or is the Genius suggestions sidebar gone in iTunes 11?
I hope I'm just missing something because this is something that I used all the time when looking for new music.

I think there's a little confusion here...I am (and i think TzTerri + others are) looking for is the genius purchase suggestions sidebar, not the genius playlist functionality.
I also (used to) use the genius suggestions sidebar a lot, i found most of my new music that way. If it's gone, i'm going to be very disaappointed. The cleaner interface is fine, no issues with it other than this - any chance we can have the genius sidebar back as an option please Apple?

Unable to customize sidebar

Hello,
I woke up today to see my sidebar links disappered. I do not have links to any folder on the sidebar in my finder. I tried to customize the finder but I am unable to do it. It is not accepting any folder I choose and feels as if I am disabled to make any changes to the sidebar. I would really appreciate your help.

Is the whole sidebar gone, or just one section?
If the whole thing, try Show Sidebar from the View menu (cmd-opt-S).
If just a section, try deleteing the com.apple.sidebarlists.plist file from your user/Library/Preferences.
To get to your user/Library, hold down the Option (alt) key and select Library from the Go menu in Finder. Then, open the Preferences folder.

Sidebar, revisited

I know there have been a lot of complaints about the sidebar in Leopard; micro icons, tiny text, the inability to show icons only, the ails of "where did my dynamically resizing icons go?"
Have there been any add-ons, utilities, or GUI hacks released to restore a more Tiger-like behavior to the sidebar? (I am referring to GUI behavior, although the lack of mounted volumes is supremely annoying as well. So is the amount of space wasted by headings for categories that have no items shown - really, if I uncheck all of the items under search, shouldn't the category heading go away???)
There is no way I am putting Leopard on the laptop until this issue is resolved - I can spare the space for a 200 pixel sidebar on my 20", I can't on the laptop, and this would make me crazy!

This is frequently mentioned when discussing this issue as if it could be just haphazardly overlooked when it is quite obvious.
The differences between Tiger and Leopard here are very clear. Yes. You can collapse the sidebar and the button bar by clicking the chicklet in the upper right hand corner. And while this is useful for cleaning up the windows and the spaces, it doesn't do much for keeping folders organized as when it is unchecked then you have to resize everything in the window. And, of course, this is to ignore the clear fact that while the buttons on the folder window are useful on a consistent basis, while the drives and folders to the side are an annoyance that takes up valuable screen real-estate, but also are easily misclicked when working in the finder windows leading the user to untold territory on their computer.
It is utterly ridiculous of Apple to not fix this. Again, it looks stupid in Windows, and i certainly don't want it on my Mac. i just don't see why they had to remove features in Leopard. My god! i mean, why "upgrade" when it merely means that the user is going to LOSE features of the OS that help them with their work flow--or he capacity to manage their user experience the way the USER wants to rather than the way Apple THINKS they SHOULD?
i am so utterly irritated by this. Leopard is hardly an advancement when it comes to workflow. Tiger is much better suited for that. Just take a look at the recently fixed "Stacks" to see that it is very clear that the programmers at Apple are far more interested in fluff than they are in getting the work done.
So YES, i KNOW you can collapse the entire sidebar and the menu bar. But that kind of defeats the purpose don't you think?
