Sidebar Icons on different folders

Okay, I'll try to be as brief as possible.  I recently installed a PCI express SSD into my MacPro 3,1 to hold all system files and applications. I have kept my music, movies, documents, etc, on a separate platter drive.  When I moves those folders into the sidebar, however, they just show up as a generic folder.
Is there a way to apply the more ornate sidebar icons to these folders?  I have done the Get Info/Copy/Paste to the folders themselves, but when placed into the sidebar, they do not show up.
Thanks in advance.
Chris

Unforunately it's one way or the other, sorry bud

  • 10.7.5 update, sidebar icons appear as folders now

I just upgraded to 10.7.5, and since then, most of my sidebar icons are simply folders. I do have SIMBL installed, and if I relaunch the finder, the icons sometimes go back to normal for a moment, but then they become folders again:
Has anyone seen this before? And does anyone know of a way to get the regular icons (either colored or uncolored) back? I tried deleting all the Finder preferences files.
    Thanks,
    David

I can do that, and, the icons show up as folders there, too, although I think they're supposed to there. I'm talking about on the sidebar, where they should normally look like one of these and they don't.

  • Two different file icons in different folders for my php files??

    Hi,
I try to move a copy of my running website to my localhost. (MAMP+MacBook Pro)
I have problems getting to my local domain. Therefore I tried to install a clean Prestashop installation to see if that worked, which seems to work neatly.
Comparing the two website files, I noticed something strange (for me, anyway):
In the working prestashop root folder, my PHP files have a nice, black icon associated with them
In the non accessible prestashop root folder, my PHP files have a boring white filesheet like icon.
I re-associated ALL the PHP files with a text editor, but still the difference remains...
What's the cause of this?? Does this have to do with permissions or so, causing my problems with entering this local shop ??
    Thanks,
    Pascal

You can use Exportant's "Fast Cache" feature to save time when exporting the same file with different settings (a free plugin I wrote).
It's an export filter which saves a rendered copy of the file being exported in a cache, if not there already (or develop settings / metadata have changed), and pulls it from the cache when present (so Lr won't have to re-render), so it takes 1/2 the amount of time to export 2 copies, 1/3 the amount of time to export 3 copies etc.
Unfortunately, it's not compatible with all export/publish services, e.g. Export Manager & Turning Gate Publisher.
It *is* however compatible with a lot of them, like:
Adobe's Hard Drive export or publish service.
    My TreeSyncPublisher (export or publish).
Jeffrey Friedl's Folder or Collection publishing service (publish only).
If you're interested in saving your time but not your computer's, then just use Export Manager (without export filters), or a publish service (well, one publish service for each format..) - Lr will re-render, but it's one click to go..
    robcole.com - Exportant
Another option for speedy exporting of jpegs is PreviewExporter, which exports from the Lr lib preview cache - not appropriate for obtaining printable tiffs.

  • Pictures not displaying as icons in picture folders

When I open my picture folder while in Finder, some of the nested folders will show previews of the photos as icons, while other folders only show the generic "jpeg" icon. Does anyone know why? My goal is to have the pictures themselves be displayed. Thanks!

Actually, I think the problem is the View setting for the nested folders. Check it and make sure the sub-folder has the option set to display an icon preview. Also, there are different setting options for each type of "view"--and folders can vary in their individual settings. Frankly, I believe the system for setting the view options is confusing and less useful than it used to be, but Apple likes the way it works now, and no one asked me.....

  • Successfully imported json bookmarks file into FF19, and library view shows folders correctly, but Sidebar view shows no folders and so loses my organization.

Longtime FF user. Still on 3.6.28 mostly, due to my need for my large collection of hierarchically organized bookmarks. I have 2000+.
    Trying FF 19 today.
Successfully imported the json file from other system.
Via the Bookmarks menu, Show All reaches Library view and everything is there. Except for the fact that this FF design will not let me see the contents of more than one folder at one time. Which is why I've stayed with 3.6.28.
Now, a friend has shown me that I can see multiple folders AND the contents of multiple folders using Sidebar Bookmarks, just as I wish. Great! But after importing my bookmarks, all I see is a random list of bookmarks in the Sidebar view. There are no folders or subfolders so with this view I lose all the organizational structure I see in the Library.
Am I missing something? Is there a way (an addon) that would put everything in the Library Right Pane? instead of just one folder? That would be fine.
    OR
Is there a way to preserve the organization of my bookmarks after importing them, in the Sidebar view? That would also be fine.
Thanks for any helpful answers. Otherwise, back to 3.6.28 I go.

In the Library view, everything functions as Mozilla would have it. Yes, individual bookmarks are not to be seen, except in the right side pane. And only from one folder at a time. Returning to the beginning, that was my complaint with Show All Bookmarks and why I've stuck with 3.6.28 coupled with Old Manage Bookmarks.
And that's why I asked if anyone is aware of an addon to make the contents of more than one folder visible in the right hand pane of the Library view in FF 4 and up. I've even tried Mike S's "hack" of OMB to see if I could make "Organize Bookmarks" return on FF19. No luck.
So Library View works as it "should". But that's insufficient for my needs.
You've indicated that Sidebar view SHOULD function as I wish. But so far, barring a fix, I don't see folders, subfolders nor individual bookmarks ''in the order'' that they started in, from PC1. I don't know why that failed. I'm happy to keep trying things, til the moon turns green.
Proceeding along -- sort Library? Yes, sorting works. But since the Library is functioning, unsorted is my preference. To make the Library View FULLY ADEQUATE though, I'd want to see bookmarks in different folders viewable at one time. What I need is the Sidebar view with all the folders showing, replicating the Library's View hierarchical structure.
HTML export and import? I'm sure I can import one into FF19. But I don't know how to export them from PC1 as my bookmarks are in .json format. When I try to do that, the dialog window confines me to selecting an HTML file, and so I can't export the .json file I have. I'm sure there's an easy answer, but its not intuitive.
    Thx

  • Custom Icon Images for Folders in KM

    Hello Everyody,
I have to display folders such as Pesonal Documents, Public documents, Recently used, Favourites etc which are there in the entry point repository in KM. Right now all these folders are being displayed with the default icon image specified. I want to replace these default images with custom images but couldnt see any property where i can change the image path for these folders. I checked the details of all these folders and even went through the properties but there it shows only the default image name speciefied for that folder and no active settings where i can change the image path for custom icon. Kindly suggest how to implement custom image for KM folder icons.
    Thanking you all in advance,
    Regards,
    Sarabjeet.

    Hi,
If I understood, you have a KM navigation iview, where some folders apperar. You want to change the icon for each of them differently.
    For this do the following:
First have a look into the KM.navigation iview and get the layout set property. Go to System config->KM->Content management->User interface->Settings->LayoutSet and find the layout set you are using. Go to appropriate resource renderer and check the "<b>Icon setting</b>". Change it to: <b>iconreplace</b>.
Now get the KM details for your folders and change the <b>IconSource</b> property to your image Example:
    /etc/public/mimes/images/add.gif
Voila...the icons for these folders are changed!
    Hope this is your case.

  • Why do the sidebar icons not have colors, etc?

Why do the sidebar icons with Lion not have colors, etc? I customized my icons so I can quickly recognize folders. This is a very significant loss as far as I am concerned. Any solutions or news about rectifying this?

All anyone here can say is "because that's what Apple decided". Whether this will ever change we can't say, being just your fellow users in these forums. You can comment to Apple via their feedback page, if you wish:

  • Photo stream different folders??

Ok, so I have an iPhone 5 and I am trying to get rid of some pictures (this is a whole other issue) but I have different amounts of pictures stored?? This is what I have:
    PC: Photostream foder (402 pics)
    iPhone 5: Albums> Photo Stream (275 pics)
iPhone 5: Photo Stream Icon (198 pics)
*** is that all about?!?! Surely Photo Stream means just that! I'm getting annoyed that Apple sell it to you that everything is soooo idiot proof, and everything is done for you 'take one photo here, and then it is here when you get home' etc etc!!!
To be fair, my pictures do tend to show up on my other devices (iPad and apple tv) but I am confused by all the different pictures in different folders.
    Phew!!

I'm fairly certain that it's an account-wide preference. You could always enable a second user account, turn on Fast User Switching, and only swap to that account to launch iPhoto and do your Photo Stream business.

  • Sidebar Icons Displaying Incorrectly

I recently used LiteIcon to change how my folder icons look (because the oversaturated blue folders in Yosemite are ugly, in my opinion) and in the process, it messed up my sidebar icons. They now look like this:
When they used to look like this:
I did this one time before I updated LiteIcon and it did the exact same thing but I thought they would've fixed this since the update. Does anyone know how to fix this? It's driving me up the walls every time I open my finder.

Well ... my sidebar is labeled "Audio CD" instead of "Macintosh HD" under Yosemite ... is this an easter egg?

  • Icons turn into folders

I've got a Powermac G4 500mhz. I found a cool PM G4 Icon I wanted to used in place of the regular HD icon. I downloaded it on my MacBook and transfered it over to the PM with a jump drive. Problem is when I open up the jump drive the icon images turn into generic blue folders. Also all of my sidebar icons (pictures, music, movies etc.) show the blue folder as well instead of images of a camera and so fourth. Any ideas on whats causing this?

Finder at one time was predictable and easy to use. Now it is fickle and a general pain. Here's a cheap shareware product that will give you back some control on icons.

  • Sidebar icons missing

Okay, after upgrading to Mountain Lion, I found my Sidebar has no icons at all. Just the words you can click on to navigate.
    I thought-corrupted plist file.
So I went to Macintosh HD\Users\Troy\Lbrary\Preferences and low and behold, no com.apple.sidebar.plist.  There is a com.apple.sidebarlists.plist so I trashed that, emptied the Trash, restarted.
    Still no sidebar icons.
    Ideas?

Delete these 2 folders then, voila!! it worked for me!
STEP 1 : 위의 SIMBL 경로 안에 있는 ColorfulSidebar.bundle 을 Delete합니다.
    [Main HDD] / Library / Application Support / SIMBL / Plugins / ColorfulSidebar.bundle
STEP 2 : 아래 경로 내에 있는 com.colorsidebar.root.plist 파일을 Delete합니다.
    Users/[본인 계정 이름]/Library/LaunchAgents/  or [Main HDD]/Library/LaunchAgents/
    STEP 3 : restart.

  • Gray Sidebar Icons, Slow Application File Open/Save in OS-X 10.7

I hate the gray sidebar icons in Mac OS-X. I am a very visual person and every clue, including color, helps. I don't understand why Apple has found it necessary to take a giant step backward in time. Perhaps soon they will reintroduce black and white monitors.
Anyway, I downloaded a pluging that restores colors to the finder windows, but not the application file open/save dialogs. Also, many times the application open/save dialog windows are slow to load the sidebar window; i.e. I can't do anything until they load the the folders, files, and devices available to open.
Does anyone have a fix for this? Does anyone know if Apple plans to restore colored icons?
    Thanks - Bill

    Try rebuilding Finder prefs....
Go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key and choose Library. Then go to Preferences folder and trash these files:
    com.apple.finder.plist
    com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
Then, restart, or log out and in again.
(You will have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.)
EDIT: Could it be whatever app you're using for the FInder windows that's causing that slowness?

  • Apple Simply MUST Change Sidebar Icons

    They're simply idiotic.
On balance I quite like many of Lion's new features, but the new sidebar icons are one of the worst examples of form over function that I've ever seen.
I'm sure we all associated the colour with the icons: desktop - purple, downloads - green etc.
I mean, what's the point of having a blazingly fast computer if you can't find what you're looking for quickly? And if my sight were in any way impaired I guess I'd be totally scr@wed.
My money's on apple bringing back the colour icons (or some colour implementation) in the first update, but it seems beyond belief that someone at apple actually thought this was a good idea, and signed it off.

The colors and custom icons aren't just for pretty. They help with quick navigation to those folder.
Give us a way to bring back custom folders.
Plus, the low contrast versions of Apple folders are hard for us old people to see.
Apple, when I work, I'm tearing through a dozen apps, three dozen open files, and six dozen folders. Then there are the constant interruptions from other poeple to deal with, so anything to help get there and back faster is a huge plus.
Don't take things away from me that help me organize based on current use! That the sidebar is visible in open-save dialogs helps me a lot, but this mass of indistinguishable grey helps not.

  • What is the best way to move files to different folders in a plug-in?

I am writing a plug-in that needs to move files on the hard drive.  I am using LrFileUtils.move(from, to) and everything is fine except that the catalog is not updated when the file is moved.  After the plug-in runs I can use Library > Synchronize Folder to get the catalog back in sync with the new locations of the photos on the drive, but this manual step is less than ideal.
I am unable to find a way to move the files within the plug in that also updates the catalog (like dragging photos to a new location within the LR Navigator pane).  Lacking an API for this, I looked for a way to programmatic execute the Synchronize Folder menu item, but was not able to find this either..
Can anyone recommend a better way to move photos to different folders within a plug-in that also updates the catalog?

    Hi Andy,
There are 3 main file formats that you can consider writing your data out to in LabVIEW:
    ASCII
    Binary
    Datalog
    ASCII
ASCII files are useful because every operating system and almost every application can read/write ASCII format files. Use ASCII files when:
Other users or applications will need to access the data file.
You will not need to perform random access file I/O
File I/O speed is not crucial
    Disk space is not crucial
Examples within LabVIEW Example Finder: Fundamentals >> File Input and Output >> Write to Text File.vi and Read from Text File.vi
    Binary
Binary byte stream files are more specific to data storage and retrieval. Use b
    inary files when:
File I/O will remain in LabVIEW only -- no other applications will be needing to write/read that file. There is no standard formatting for binary files and thus other applications or operating systems may be unable to read the file.
Files are smaller than ASCII files
Easier and faster random access to data
Examples within LabVIEW Example Finder: Fundamentals >> File Input and Output >> Write Binary File.vi and Read Binary File.vi
    Datalog
    When to use datalog:
If you need to record data with a mixture of types, it can be cumbersome to convert everything to ASCII or to keep track of the binary formatting.
Datalog format is binary and internal to LabVIEW, so again only use this format if no other applications or operating systems will be needing to perform file I/O on the file.
Examples within LabVIEW Example Finder: Fundamentals >> File Input and Output >> Write Datalog File
Example.vi and Read Datalog File Example.vi
    Good luck!
