Sidecar.xml first generation

Johannes granted us with the excellent : http://projects.nordsueddesign.de/sidecarxml/ so that we can organize and easily manipulate elements of a large publication.
The thing is it requires a "first time generation" which seems to have to be done manually, filling each folio name, description, etc.
Basically, this xml manipulation is done inside the Folio Builder panel, or the Folio Producer website. And it's "invisible" to the user.
I don't see, and think we would require, an export option once a folio is organized, to generate this very first xml.
Second thing is this tool is hosted freely by Johannes, when i suppose it should be hosted directly by Adobe, at the very least mentionning the creator and owner of this priceless tool.
I also saw a discussion here http://forums.adobe.com/message/4031557 and wonder : We can update the sidecar xml alone. But it seems to require to process again all the present data, images, and send again online, when it only has to change properties and the order of the pages. Shouldn't there be a way to update ONLY this meta file in the folio/different articles ? Just thinking of the process and bandwidth for a 300MB folio when a 50k xml is all that changed…
PS : we need a "vote for ideas" option somewhere here, no ?

thank you Franck for your nice words. I like that I could help a few people
out with this generator that I initially only made for myself.
now that we require renditions, sidecars are more important than ever.
normally, I create everything in the sidecar at first, don't edit metadata
in the folio builder panel/organizer.
Bob Bringhurst somewhere mentioned a possible "export" function where you
can then transfer the metadata, wich is on some roadmap.
but the requirement of such a file is wrong at the first place. instead of
duplicating a folio two, three, four or five times (iPad2,3, Android,
iPhone 3,4) this should be an integrated process.
a folio should have defined "targets" inside: iPad, retina, android. and
when Adding an article, all required 'internal renditions' should be
generated automaticlly by upscaling and/or picking the right alternative
layout.
I think this would be the correct architecture for renditions and it is an
approach we see by many multi device workflows (especially iOS app design).
but now I am turning this thread into a discussion about renditions.
sidecar.XML is good, but does not cover all things, like preview files or
article format, so there might be an improvement as well.
the code of my sidecar generator is also available on github for everybody
to grab, improve and host (or check changes back in).

  • Sidecar.xml not working with smoothScrolling

    Hi everybody!
I am struggling with a big problem with the sidecar.xml file because it does not load the <smoothScrolling>always</smooothScolling> instruction.
I have created a very simple "test" folio with only two articles each made of two pages either in horizontal and vertical, so I have the followinf structure:
    <FOLIO> (main folder)
    sidecar.xml
    <001> (first stack)
001_v.indd (an indesign file with 1 page 768x1024)
001_h.indd (an indesign file with 1 page 1024x768)
    <002> (second stack)
002_v.indd (an indesign file with 2 pages 768x1024)
002_h.indd (an indesign file with 2 pages 1024x768)
I have created the sidecar using the utility of Johannes Henseler so I am sure it is correct and here it is (I have just removed the link section which was very long):
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="true" ?>
    <sidecar>
              <!--
    sidecar.xml generator by Johannes Henseler
    http://projects.nordsueddesign.de/sidecarxml
    -->
              <!-- article #0 -->
              <entry>
                        <folderName>001</folderName>
                        <articleTitle>Test</articleTitle>
                        <author>Puzzle</author>
                        <kicker>Pilly</kicker>
                        <description>Cover</description>
                        <tags></tags>
                        <isAd>false</isAd>
                        <smoothScrolling>never</smoothScrolling>
                        <isFlattenedStack>false</isFlattenedStack>
              </entry>
              <!-- article #1 -->
              <entry>
                        <folderName>002</folderName>
                        <articleTitle>Test</articleTitle>
                        <author>Puzzle</author>
                        <kicker>Pilly</kicker>
                        <description>First Article</description>
                        <tags></tags>
                        <isAd>false</isAd>
                        <smoothScrolling>always</smoothScrolling>
                        <isFlattenedStack>false</isFlattenedStack>
              </entry>
    </sidecar>
Well.. what it happens now is that I create a new folio with the Folio Builder Panel and then I import using the multiple article option. Everything seems ok (the two articles are imported and the description, article title, author, kicker are correct) but the "smoothScrolling" results to be deactivated! (in my Italian version I have the following text "Scorrimento uniforme: disattivato (allinea a pagina)" (that I translate as "never") instead I was expecting to have "Scorrimento uniforme: entrambe le direzioni" (that I translate as "always").
And what is worse is that if I try to modify the property in Indesign using the Folio Builder Panel I get this error message:
    Errore di generazione contenuto.
[Errore: Gli articoli con scorrimento uniforme devono contenere almeno una pagina singola. Aprite la finestra di dialogo Proprietà per modificare le opzioni di scorrimento uniforme.]
    I try to translate:
    Generating content error.
Error: the articles with smoothScrolling must contains at least a single page. Open the dialogue window Property to modify the options for the smoothScrolling.
Actually the Indesign source files 002_v.indd and 002_h.indd have already two pages so I do not understand what the error means. It just says to modify the property, but this means I can not have the smoothScrolling on "always" and I do not understand why!
I just would like to have a "smoothScrolling" effect between two pages of various articles using the sidecar.xml file!
    Please someone can help me?

Smooth scrolling and flattenig does not work in combination. I think there
is no way to enable that.

  • Path-based sidecar.xml adding more articles to folio

Hi -- I've created a path-based sidecar that works great. Now I want to add more articles to the folio. How do I do that? If I upload the whole works again through "Import using sidecar.xml," does it write over the existing articles? If I "Import as single articles," the new content, how do I get a new sidecar file in there?
    Thanks!
    Beth

Hi again Tomek -- I'm back on this project and have failed at using your technique to upload a new sidecar.xml file after adding another article to my folio. I updated the xml, and moved it into a folder as instructed. That folder had no name for my first try, then I tried naming it sidecar.xml. Neither worked when I went to the Builder, selected Import Multiple Articles and picked just that folder. I got the attached error msg. I must be doing something wrong.
Update: Since I'm using path-based xml, I had to edit the code to have it update the meta and NOT load the articles again. I found this in the Help pages for v31:
To update metadata in existing articles, edit the sidecar.xml file, insert the <metadataUpdateOnly/> element immediately after the <sidecar> element, and then import the sidecar.xml file using the "Import Using sidecar.xml" option in the Import Article dialog box.
It worked. Also, the xml file is NOT in a folder by itself. Thought you'd like to know.
    Thanks anyway! Beth

  • MacMini First generation intel

    Hi,
I was wondering if any of you with a first-generation Intel Macmini with a working ethernet connection would mind e-mailing me their NetworkInterfaces.plist file - which lives under: Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/
My CoreDuo 1.6 ethernet port has stopped working and in trying to fix it (by deleting the network port from System Preferences) I can't re-add add it.
This information from a working macmini may solve it.
Thank you very much for your help,

  • My first generation ipad no longer recognized by itunes 12.1.2.27

I just recently updated iTunes to  12.1.2.27 now my first generation iPad is no longer recognized.
    iPad Model MC349FD / Mid 2011 iMac 3.4GHz, 32GB ram, OS X 10.10.3

    Hello there, Blueye3355.
The following iPad Troubleshooting Assistant has some good steps to run through, to make sure you've covered all your bases:
Apple - Support - iPad - iTunes Assistant
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipad/assistant/itunes/
If following all the steps listed there are additional options on the last step you might want to try or review the "if the issue persists" steps mentioned in the second part of:

  • IPod First Generation Song Order Problem

    Equipment Specs:
    IPOD -- First Generation, 1 G size, Firmware ver # 1.1.5
    ITunes -- Ver # 7.2.0.34
    Problem
I recently updated to the above version of ITunes. I also recently reset/erased all my songs (no podcasts or nothing else)from my IPOD.
I then reloaded just songs to my pod using the drag and drop method from the music file. I then re-arranged the songs in my desired order.
I then disonnected the pod and exited ITunes.
When I later restarted ITunes with the pod connected, my song order had changed. With the pod still open in ITunes, I am no longer able to change the play order position. As say, move song #45 to position #2 and etc.
Has something changed as I was always able to do this prior to updating ITunes and the pod ?
Was this caused by updating ITunes to the newest version?
Is there a solution to be able to manage the order of your songs as before ?
    Thx
    Arc
IPOD First Gen 1Gig Firmware 1.1.5   Windows XP   ITunes 7.2.0.34

OK, When I am trying to do this, I see the following
    columns
    1. name
    2. time artist and so on
In the name column the songs are numbered.
I've been referring to the UNlabeled column to the LEFT
of the "Name" column all this time... you seem to not be able to recognize that there actually IS such column according to your description.
I'm referring to the numbers on the LEFT side as in this image:
    http://a248.e.akamai.net/7/248/51/3053501176226988/www.info.apple.com/images/kba se/305350/305350_1.gif
When I try and move 9 to 5 or whatever there is no
horizontal line as I have seen in previous versions.
I know how I accomplished this task before and it is
    not working in this version.
Would it work to revert back to an earlier version of
    Itunes ?
Dunno... from what I've read in the iTunes discussions
this problem has not appeared there.
BUT you CAN delete iTunes 7.2 and then go to http://filehippo.com/download_itunes and download 7.1.1 (under Old Versions in box on right side of page)
Install it and see if it solves the problem...
What version are you using ?
    7.1.1(5)

  • I have a first generation ipad that I gave to my father.  He wants to download a few things and it says that he can't because he needs the new ios update.  When I try to download it it says that I can't.  Is the older version IPADS unable to update?

I have a first generation IPad and it won't let me download unless I update to the new ios system.  When I go to do that it won't let me do that either. What advise can you offer?  Thanks

Maybe a little more info would be helpful. How are you trying to update the iPad? What model iPad it is and what version of the iOS is on it now?

  • HT5527 Why is it that when I bought my first generation iPad in October of 2010 the Apple sales rep at the Orange County California store suggested that I pay $99 for Mobile Me "coverage" and told me it was a "one time charge".

Why is it when I bought my first generation iPad in October 2010 the sales rep at the Orange County California South Coast Plaza store suggested that I buy Mobile Me service for $99 which he assured me was a one time charge and now, of course, Mobile Me has been discontinued and I've been "forced" to move to the Cloud and I'm being provided with another year of what Apple calls complimentary service with the clear indication that in a year I'm going to be asked to pay again for something I paid a one time charge for two years ago?

Mobile Me was the successor to .Mac (dot mac) which was "free" to all users but for a limited time. It included a free email address @mac.com and an amount of what we would now call "cloud" storage that went by the name of iDisk. iDisk worked great but with only dialup service for me it was barely useful.
So I didn't think much of dot-mac but lots of people thought it was worth paying for, so they did. Apple wanted to make it even more useful and integrate it with their portable devices which we all know as iPads and iPhones, and assembled a team to make it all work. This was to be called Mobile Me.
They failed miserably. Lots of people including me looked at the final product and said "huh?" Unfortunately for the Mobile Me engineers, one of those people was Steve Jobs. He first humiliated them quite publicly, then disbanded the team, including firing at least one senior manager who shall remain nameless.
This was the rocky beginning of what is now called iCloud, which is the "free" service I should have explained. iCloud includes an email address @me.com, and the 5 GB of "storage" which aggregates things like iWork documents, your email, calendars, Photostream, and iPhone backups.
You can buy more storage if you need more than 5 GB, but if you have more than that it's still free through September 2013.
What happens if you have more than 5 GB stored on iCloud and on September 2013 you don't pay? I'm not sure, but you have a year to think about it.

  • How to: Force-sync a first generation Apple TV with iTunes 12

For anyone else out there who's still using a first generation Apple TV and iTunes 12 and realized there's no longer an option to "force" the device to sync, I have a work around.
    Background
With my first generation Apple TV, I "manually" manage the content stored on the device. As well, I don't add content movie-by-movie (song-by-song, etc.). Instead, I have three playlists (Movies, TV Shows, and Music) that I then sync to the Apple TV. The problem is, even pre-iTunes 12, modifying the content of a playlist didn't trigger iTunes to offer to "sync" the device (I don't think it was smart enough to deal with the EOL first generation Apple TV in terms of playlist content changes). But, at least with pre-iTunes 12, you were able to right-click on the device in the sidebar and this would bring up a contextual message with "Sync" as one of the options. So, even though the "Sync" option was greyed-out in the main iTunes window, you could still initiate the sync via the contextual menu (thus "force syncing" the device with iTunes). But, with iTunes 12, this contextual menu has been removed (right clicking does nothing) and thus the ability to "force sync" is gone.
    Solution
After trying many different options to get the first generation Apple TV to sync with iTunes (after updating the content of a synced playlist), this is the only solution I've come up with that works:
    1. Create a playlist called "ATV Force Sync".
    2. Put a single movie in the playlist (I used a short, 10 second video, but I'm sure you could also use a song or any other media—just use something that is short and you don't care if it's on or off the device).
    3. To "force sync" the Apple TV, iTunes > Apple TV > Settings > Movies > Sync Playlist, check the checkbox beside the "ATV Force Sync" playlist. This will then enable the Sync"button and you can now force the Apple TV to sync with iTunes (it'll sync the "ATV Force Sync" playlist, but also sync any changes to any other playlist the Apple TV is set to sync with). Then, the next time you want to force sync (i.e., if you've updated the content in a playlist you want to sync), just uncheck the checkbox beside the "ATV Force Sync" playlist, and the Sync button will be enabled again (and so on, enabling/disabling the "ATV Force Sync" every time you want to force-sync the device).
Anyway, it's not an ideal solution, but at least it works. I've filed a bug report with Apple, but let's be honest, I don't think supporting the first generation Apple TV is on their "to do" list anymore. <G>
Hope this helps someone else out there!
    Kristin.

Hi minjak—I'll see if I can help?
Has the Apple TV ever been connected to iTunes at all (on that, or another computer)? From the sounds of it, the ATV has already been "paired" with an iTunes library, thus it's not (and won't) show up in your current version of iTunes.
So, here's what I'd suggest. On your Apple TV, do the following…
Go to Settings > Computers > Select iTunes Library (or something like that—I don't remember 100% what the option is called as I don't have the screen in front of me right now) and select "Disconnect".
This should remove and "synced" or "paired" computer (iTunes) from your ATV.
Then, re-sync it back up to your version of iTunes. You have to do something like this…
On your ATV, go to Settings > Computers > Connect to iTunes and a passcode should display on your screen. Then, go to iTunes, and the ATV should appear (give it about 15-20 seconds). If it does, select it and enter the passcode showing on the ATV. This should re-sync the ATV to your copy of iTunes.
Make sure both the computer and Apple TV are on the same internal network. And if possible, connect the Apple TV to the network via ethernet (rather than WiFi). Again, make sure the Apple TV is "online" and connected to the same network at the computer running iTunes.
If all works, you should see the Apple TV appear in iTunes, something like this (i.e., there's now a small Apple TV icon at the right end of the row of icons along the top)…
Anyway, have a go at the instructions above and let me know what happens, and we can go from there!
    Thanks,
    Kristin.

  • I got a first generation IPOD TOUCH for my husband and want to take some songs From my Computer that is hooked up to MY newer IPOD (not Touch, just IPOD)  Is it possible to take the music from my ITUNES account and add the his IPOD Touch without changing

I am trying to take songs from my PC AND My Itunes account and send them to my husband's IPOD TOUCH First Generation BUT I don't want to change my whole ITUNES account that is already on my computer.  When I plug HIS Ipod Touch into the PC, my ITUNES account wants me to CHANGE the DEVICE Name on the account and I don't want to do that.  I only want to share SOME of my songs on my Itunes account and send them to h is IPOD TOUCH?  Is this possible and HOW!  Thanks a ton!!!  I "checked" off the songs that I want to send but that's as far as I get before it asks me to change the Device Name?

Is his iPod usually synced to a different iTunes library/computer?  If so, that would explain the message iTunes is giving you.  An iPod is designed to sync with only one computer/iTunes library at a time.  If you try to sync it with a new library, the iPod's contents will be erased and replaced with what is in the newer/different iTunes library.
So if there is content you would like to add to his iPod, simply transfer it from your iTunes library to his.

  • My first generation iPad suddenly stopped opening Safari.  I cleared history, cookies, and cache, and Safari still won't open.  Any suggestions?

When I attempt to open a Safari window on my first-generation iPad, it opens to a blank screen.  I can see the web address bar and the search box, but the rest of the page is white.  I cleared cookies, history, and cache, but still nothing happens.  The iPad is 3G, and I have tried to open Safari using both 3G and my home WiFi.  My wife has an iPad 3 WiFi, and hers opens without issue.  Any suggestions on what I might do?  Thanks!

    1. Double-click the Home button to close all Inactive Apps in Task Bar
    2. Hold the Apps in Task Bar down for a second or two until you see the minus sign
    3. Tap the minus sign to close Apps
    4. Tap center of screen to return to Home Screen
    5. Reset iPad. Hold the Sleep and Home button down for about 10 second until you see the Apple logo. Ignore the red slider

  • My Macbook Air first generation is slow and applications don't work!

Last week, I woke up to find that my macbook air (first generation) has completely frozen. I went ahead and tried many keys such as esc, etc. until I decided to press on the power button for a few seconds until it restarted. Next, I found an empty screen with nothing but the apple logo on it. I was patient but nothing happened, 3 hours into the wait. I went on the apple support communities and followed a few steps to reboot and ended up with a blue screen, with my start up slowly starting. Ever since, everything takes about x50 the amount of time it takes to do anything for example, when I click on a file, it takes x 50 times longer it takes to open the file or empty the trash, etc. I've tried opening any application to try and back up so I can do a format as they call it, but I can't open any application such as Mail, etc.
I am not a computer software/hardware literate person but I can understand what's going on and how to follow steps suggested by IT/apple experts. I have also done a hardware check up on reboot and everything is fine with the hardware.
Please help me get my macbook air back.
    Thank you.

Two other factors that could impact performance like that .... reduced memory and a too full hard drive/SSD.
If you click on the apple on the menu bar, and about this mac, does it show you the memory size  you expect to have, ie, 2GB?
If you can, bring up the Activity Monitor (on your hard drive in applications/utlities) to see if anything is hogging the CPU.
On your hard drive/SSD, how much free space do you have?  You need 5GB minimum with 10% to 15% being better, for systems usage. Less than that can really slow the system down.
If you can, bring up Disk Utility (on your hard drive in applications/utilities) and do a verify disk to check the disk status.
You could reset PRAM ... won't hurt and 'might' help
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
You should be able to run the Apple hardware test by disconnecting any devices, leaving the power adapter in, and reboot holding the D key down. Run the extended test.
