Sierra Wireless 881 USB Connect. Airport Extreme

I have Been told that you could plug the Sierra Wireless 881 USB Connect into the back of the Airport Extreme OR iMac because it has the same Airport Extreme Capabilities. Your supposed to be able to just plug it it go to your airport settings and create a network, when you do this its just supposed to show up says the Best Buy and Apple Store Employee's!
I have tried this and it did not work for me.
I want to be able to send out a signal from the Sierra Wireless 881 USB and be able to use all 3 computers on the same network!
The Sierra Wireless 881 USB is just a simple and portable USB connect that you would get at the AT&T store!
If anybody has ANY information I would REALLLLY appreciate some feedback.
Thank You So Much,
CGair

The USB device in question appears to be a mobile broadband modem. That is, wireless broadband through a mobile telephone network. This is not the same as a "local" wireless network (Wi-Fi).
I want to be able to send out a signal from the Sierra Wireless 881 USB and be able to use all 3 computers on the same network!
In order to do this, you would typically need a dedicated mobile broadband router with Wi-Fi capabilities (available from a number of manufacturers), and with specific support for the USB modem used.
Alternatively, it may be possible to use a special adapter (such as this example) between the USB modem and the (Ethernet WAN port of an) AirPort Extreme base station. I have not tested this, though.

  • Power Mac G3 Pismo with Airport wireless card in Mac OS X 10.4 won't connect to wireless network  with  newest Airport Extreme Base Station set at WPA Personal/WPA 2 Personal encryption.

My Power Book G3 Pismo with an Airport wireless card  running Mac OS X 10.4.11 will not connect to my new Airport
Extreme Base Station using WPA Personal/WPA 2 Person encryption.  The Airport firmware is version 9.52.  From
posts I've read online at different places indicates the Airport card should support the WPA encryption.  Perhaps the problem
is the Base Station is using a combination setting and the fault is in the base station?
    Thanks for any suggestions

Perhaps an inexpensive usb wireless adapter would work as well?
This is probably the simplest way to get the G3 connected to the wireless network.
I'll have to read up on getting an express and using it as a wireless bridge as I am unfamiliar with the concept.
The new AirPort Extreme is broadcasting a wireless signal.
A new AirPort Express could be located close to the G3. The Express will pick up the wireless signal from the AirPort Extreme, then provide an Ethernet connection to the G3 though a short Ethernet cable.
This can work very well......IF.....you keep the G3 at a fixed location, since it will always be connected to the AriPort Express using an Ethernet cable.
I do have an old Linksys Wireless G router.  I wonder if that would work?
In theory, yes. But it would have to use much older WEP "security", which is easily cracked in minutes using free tools available on the Internet. So, anyone who really wanted to get on the network could do so. It's an option, but not a very good one.

  • Connecting  airport extreme type usb adapter

I am trying to connect my daughter's iBook (800 mhz Power PC G3 Macos10.4.6) to my Mac Mini using a usb adapter airport extreme. How do I get the ibook to see the adapter and use it for wireless connections. It shows in the system profiler as a usb2.0 WLAN

Typically you must install the appropriate drivers to
get a USB wireless 802.11b/g adapter to be
    recognized.
I have the software installed and it will connect under automatic in a wifi spot under automatic.
Be aware that many/most people who try these adapters
encounter much difficulty and often give up. The
incompatibility between the drivers and the Mac OS
makes the devices difficult to work with.
The best solution for an iBook G3 is the original AirPort card.
The next best solution is an Ethernet wireless
adapter (like the Linksys WET11 or WET54G). These
require no drivers and therefore will work with any
    Ethernet device.
Unfortunately, this is what I have and what I have to get to work.
The connectionwith the usb show a signal strength and link quality and says it is connected to the BSID of my airport card in my Mini. The mini is set for sharing the internet connection. But something is not set correctly.

  • Disk, to Backup the disk connected (via USB) to Airport Extreme

    Hi..
My 1.5TB disk (WD My Book Essential) is connected to Airport Extreme.
This disk contains photos, videos, etc. accessible/shared by some MacBook.
Now I need to back-up that disk, so probably I need 1 more disk as the backup disk, and the backup process can be scheduled.
Could someone please recommend me the solution. I am thinking of alternatives:
Alt-1. To have a NAS disk connected to the Airport Extreme via its ethernet port -- Is this a wise solution?
Alt-2. To split (using Hub) the USB from Airport Extreme into 2 hard disks (i.e. one disk is the existing 1.5TB disk for sharing files, while the other is one for the backup disk), and run the backup-process using Time Machine -- Is this a wise solution?
    Thanks in advance.

Again, TM will not back up „airdisks“ (i.e. USB drives connected to the Extreme’s USB port or a NAS drive connected to one of the Extreme’s LAN ports). It will only back up drives that are connected directly to your Mac http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1733?viewlocale=en_US
The only option I can think of is to have the original drive hanging off your MacBook and another drive hooked to the Extreme (although this is not officially supported http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2038 , however, some have reported success going this route)
This would turn your lappy virtually into a desktop, though. I'm stuck with a similar set up until i get a mac mini to be my dedicated media server: 1 TB external FW drive holding my iTunes lib is connected to my MBP and backed up to my TC (along with my MBP's internal HD)

  • Will Time Machine work with an external hard drive connected (via usb) to Airport Extreme?

Will Time Machine work with an external hard drive connected (via usb) to Airport Extreme?

Sorry, but this article is about 4 years old, and was printed based on preliminary information at the time.
The bottom line here is that Apple does not officially support Time Machine backups to a drive at the USB port of the AirPort Extreme.
If it works for you, great.
You might want to review the Apple Support documents below, which are far more recent than the article you reference:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/15139.html
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2038
    It is supported.....
This is NOT correct. Please do not post false information on the forums.

My iMac is able to use my wireless internet from my airport extreme, however, no other devices(iphone, ipod) will connect. The network shows up, but the indicator just spins without ever joining.
I have tried resetting my airport extreme, creating a new network, etc nothing seems to work.

I have a feeling you may be stuck in bridge mode there...
Factory reset the Extreme (so we don't second guess later), and re-set up the extreme using iOS5 on your iPhone.
Set up your Wi-Fi network with your iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, or Mac.

  • Connect AirPort Extreme Base Station to air card

How do you connect AirPort Extreme Base Station to Verizon Air Card?

Sorry, but the Air Card cannot be used with the USB port on the AirPort Extreme because that port will only work with a hard drive and/or a printer.
Suggest that you check with Verizon to see if they have an adapter or wireless router for the Air Card that will provide an Ethernet signal to the AirPort Extreme.

  • Can i use another router to extend my wireless network of my airport extreme?

i have a billion router (moddel BiPAC 7300W) I just got myself the airport extreme, i want to use the extreme as the main router and extend the network using the billion router.
steps i have followed on the extreme is as follows:
    INTERNET
connection sharing: Distrobute a range of IP addresses
    cofig IPv4:set to my home network range(manually) - ip,subnet,router,dns
    DHCP
access control: mac address of billion router set to all day every day
steps i have followed on the billion router:
    disabled NAT
    disabled DHCP
ethernet address: same range as extreme ip, actual ip op extreme is xxx.xxx.xxx.254, on billion xxx.xxx.xxx.253
    disabled RIP
    set wireless mode to 802.11b+g+n
    channel id: auto
    channel width:20/40mhz
    disable wps
    disable vmm
Wireless Distribution System (WDS) - added the 3 mac addresses the utility displayed, 5ghz and 2.4ghz and also the ethernet.
restarted both routers, not picking up all the devices connected to the network.
can any one please help me?

i want to use the extreme as the main router and extend the network using the billion router.
Unfortunately, WDS was never adopted as an official standard in the industry, so very few routers from other manufacturers are known to be compatible with Apple's WDS settings. The known devices are as follows:
    Belkin F5D7230-4 and F5D7231
    BT Voyager 2091 or 2100
    Buffalo WGR-G54
    Linksys WRT54G or WRT54GS (through version v4)
    Netgear WGR614 v6
Thompson 585v6 wireless router (40 bit WEP works but stronger encryption does not)
connection sharing: Distrobute a range of IP addresses
You would not use this setting unless your service provider has furnished you with a specific range of IP addresses to use for your devices. Is that the case?
Normally, when the AirPort Extreme is functioning as the "main" router, the setting for Connection Sharing is set to "Share a public IP address"
Wireless Distribution System (WDS) - added the 3 mac addresses the utility displayed, 5ghz and 2.4ghz and also the ethernet.
You indicated that you had configured things this way on the Billion router. But, you did not indicate whether you had set the Wireless Mode for the AirPort Extreme to "Participate in a WDS Arrangement".
If you have not already done so, this might improve your chances of establishing a connection between the AirPort Extreme and Billion router for the WDS.
To access these settings on the AirPort Extreme, you would need to open AirPort Utility and click Manual Setup. Then click the Wireless tab just below the row of icons. Change the setting for Wireless Mode to "Participate in a WDS Arrangement".
Note....you may need to hold down the option key on your Mac, (or it might be alt or control if you are using a PC) to display the WDS setting.
Once you do this, then a WDS tab will now appear next to the Wireless tab. Click on the WDS tab to set up the AirPort Extreme as the WDS Main and enter the MAC address of the Billion router.
As I mentioned previously, it is extremely unlikely that the Apple and Billion devices will be compatible for WDS, but probably worth a try....since  you never know when something just might work.
Even if it does....WDS operates only at "g" wireless speeds, so you will lose any of the faster "n" speed capabilities of the AirPort Extreme in this type of setting.
    Please post on your results.

  • How do I connect airport extreme to seagate hard drive using windows

How do I connect airport extreme to seagate hard drive using windows?

First the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) cannot share out an external HDD attached to its USB port unless it is formatted in either HFS+ or FAT16/32. It will not work if the HDD is formatted in either NTFS or ExFAT.
If the HDD is formatted properly, when you access the AEBS with the AirPort Utility, does the HDD show up properly on the Disks tab of the utility?
If it does, then you would access the HDD as any other network share, using the following format: //servername/sharename. In the case of the AirPort Disk (a HDD attached to the USB port of either an Extreme or Time Capsule), the "servername" would be the Extreme's Base Station Name, and the "sharename" would be the volumename of the HDD.

  • How can I get Time Machine to back up an external hard drive (iPhotos) that is attached to airport extreme base station. Note: Time machine is usb to macbook pro and external drive with iphotos is usb to airport extreme base station. Help please. Thanks!

How can I get Time Machine to back up an external hard drive (iPhotos) that is attached to airport extreme base station. Note: Time machine is usb to macbook pro and external drive with iphotos is usb to airport extreme base station. Help please. Thanks!

Once you have the drive connected to your Mac, click System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock
    Click Time Machine
    Click Options
Be default, the hard drive will be Excluded from backups. Click the drive to highlight it, then click the "-" (minus) button at the bottom of the list to remove the drive from Excluded items.
The drive will be backed up on the next Time Machine pass
Everything above assumes that the hard drive has been formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as Time Machine will only backup drives in that format.

He might be trying to do so to promote his products or may be there was some misunderstanding.
Airport Extreme will work as a wireless router supporting upto 50 systems including Mac computers, PCs, iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, Apple TV and virtually all 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi wireless devices — all at the same time.

I can't establish wifi connection Airport Extreme with IP-camera. At the same time cable connection is fine, but wifi not.
    Please, give me an advise.

You need to create a wireless network on the AirPort Extreme, and then you probably will want to assign a compatible static LAN IP address to the camera so that you can port-forward from the router to the camera.
