Siezed, can't reboot; PB issues three low tones and dies

Last night while working on a lecture in my hotel room, my PB (1.5 GHz G4) had a serious siezure. I was operating on battery power (about 25% or 45 mins remaining), and was moving the mouse to the menu bar in the finder. The mouse froze. No attempts at force-quitting background applications (I think just MS Word was open) or at resetting the Finder were successful. Completely non responsive.
I powered down. When I powered up, it whirred for two seconds, issued three long, alto tones (meeeep, meeeep, meeeep), and then the sleep indicator light in the latch button came on. LCD never showed signs of life.
I powered down again. Plugged the computer in the wall. Same scenario as before when I powered up.
Tried resetting PRAM and PMU on start-up. Nothing new. Always a momentary whirring, three tones, and coma.
Help? Thanks! (My lecture, sadly, depends on it's recovery.)

I also had this problem on another PB. It is a refurb 1.67 purchased a few weeks ago. I took the 512 lower RAM out and replaced it with my 1G in lower and upper slot with not success. Resetting afterward did not help. It will not boot from the CD drive either.
I installed the 512 RAM stick on my machine and it works fine.
Trying any reset options- I get 1 tone, and then 3. The sleep light flashes rapidily at start up, and after that in blinks 3 times and stays on for about 6 seconds and repeats.
I did not see a diagnostic for the 1 tone and then the 3 tones.
That's about all I can think of. Thanks for any help in advance! :~)

  • What is the cause of my MBP coming out of sleep to sound a long low tone and repeat every 5 to 7 seconds?

I put my MBP to sleep with: Paralells, Safari, Sophos, LittleSnitch and smcFanControl running as they are suppose too.
Two hours later I went to wake my MBP and I get a long low tone and repeat it was repeating every 5 to 7 seconds. I had to do a hard power down in order to reboot or get any type of response from the MBP...
Does anyone have any ideas of what this is. This machine is not even 30 days old yet & I am a new comer to the world of MBP's.

Thank you all for the input regarding grounding. This was the problem, but not from a power outlet. The Sure 8900 microphone is has a 3-prong "balanced" connector at the microphone, but then is adapted to 1/8 inch connector so that it will fit the "mic" input jack on the iMac. The result - a conversion of a balanced to unbalanced signal. After describing this to a technician a a local electronics store, he immediately said "You can't go from a balanced to an unbalanced input and not have grounding noise. The reason: one channel shares the ground - allowing the AC clipping to occur.
Solution: The 8900 mic comes with a 1/4 inch adapter making the mic "balanced" if connected. Put the 1/4 inch input over the 1/8 inch input, PLUG THIS INTO A USB mixer and into the USB port- problem solved - no more buzzing AND BETTER RECORDING QUALITY!!!

  • MBA 2009 won't boot: single low tone or three low tones are heard

And out of the blue, by MBA 2009 does not want to boot. I rebooted it, but after the boot at the FileVault screen the mouse was unresponsive (never happened before). So, I did a hard shut down and after boot, I got a low tone which is repeated every 2 seconds or so.
I tried resetting SMC (Shift-Ctrl-Opt-Power, release at the same time), but no luck.
I tried without the MagSafe attached and I got a series of three tones, repeated after 2 second or so. After a few tries with/without MagSafe, it went back to the one-tone.
This must be something very deep in the hardware that is amiss. Does anybody know what it could be?

I purchased the Microsoft Office last September at an Apple Store. I recently had to bring my MacBook Pro back to the store because of some issues. Reboot caused me to lose Office and I no longer have the passcode. Where can I find my duplicate code? I no longer have the receipt so I can not call the business to find my duplicate code. Looking back at my bank statements, this purchase was quite spendy so I hope I will not have to purchase it again if possible! Any advice would be great!

It should be on a stickerthat says product key on the inner sleeve inside the bos which the disc comes in.

  • Can't reboot to my bootable backup.

Two days ago I received my new Mac Mini, which is replacing my five-year-old iMac. So far I'm very pleased, with two minor issues just barely dampening my enthusiasm:
1- The video has "blinked out" a few times. I'm running video via HDMI->HDMI, and I understand this is a fairly common problem generating a lot of user reports here in the forums. I've only seen it three or four times in the two days I've had my Mini, and the "out" time is very brief, about a second, so I can live with this until Apple issues the expected fix.
2- More serious issue: When I attempt to boot from the bootable backup I created on an external drive, I get the following:
"You can't change the startup disk to the selected disk. Building boot caches on boot helper partition failed."
I can't restart to my external drive using the preference pane. I can reboot while holding the option key and then choose the external drive, but the Mini never fully boots after that; it just keeps spinning away on the grey Apple screen forever until I shut it down.
Any help here would be appreciated, as I don't feel fully comfortable with my data hostage to a single physical device. I'm sure all my personal data is there, but I'd like to be able to get at it by booting from that external drive should the drive* inside my Mini fail.
Do I need to install Mountain Lion directly onto the external drive to create the "boot helper partition" and then use rsync to complete my bootable backup? Because all I did was format the drive and then use rsync, which is what I've been doing for years now to create bootable backups.
    * = Technically it's two drives, as I have the Apple-installed Fusion Drive. But it is one volume.

    D'oh!
The external I'm using is a new virgin drive. I had never installed any version of OS X on it before. So yes, it was missing the behind-the-scenes/under-the-carpet magic. I suppose I could have installed Mountain Lion over its contents, but I just did a Carbon Copy Cloner clone operation instead, which has done the trick. I should be able to rsync for my backups to it from here on out.
Thanks, BD and Linc. Sorry to have wasted your time. I should have known better than to have just partitioned, formatted, and started the rsync backups without first either doing a proper volume clone or an OS X install.
    Best wishes,
    John H

  • Can I suppress the ^%#@% constant "cartridge low on ink" pop-up?

It seems my printer starts showing the "cartridge low on ink" pop-up when there is still plenty of ink left.  Not to mention I can tell when it's truly low on ink by looking at the printed pages, duh!!  I spend way too much of my life having to close the pop-up.  There doesn't seem to be anything under the  "for more information on this topic" help link for a "turn off this %^%#% message forever" option.  Can anybody help?
    This question was solved.

Ditto. HP Photosmart Plus B209a-m Excessive INK LEVEL LOW Warnings: False PRINTER OFFLINE Warnings
This is the printer from Hades!
I have the .  HP Photosmart Plus B209a-m, Lenovo T43 running XP SP3
The ink low warning "sometimes" comes on more than once per minute! And then it opens the LARGE dialogue box right in the middle of the screen showing me ink levels (none below 25% by the way), and  * soliciting me to buy ink from them on line or from a dealer or whatever.  I close it and the three warning boxes (Ink level low-two boxes simultaneously and Printer Offline)....Then a couple minutes later all them are back. This makes the computer basically unusable.
*These frequent (every few minutes)  PRINTER OFFLINE warnings occur even though it is on line. this is a wireless enabled printer. Despite the warning that it is offline, as soon as I issue a print command the printer responds (with the ink level warnings of course, while it's printing).
How can I disable (forever) the  OFFLINE and INK LEVEL warnings?

Dear apple, I am really dissapointed with you. Around January 2013, my iPhone 4s 16GB White has hardware issues, which was the Wi-Fi grey out. The wifi grey out means that I can't access the wifi on/off button, and also it has no connection. I have put up with it for months, until june 7 when I decided it has been long enough, and I got a replacement. I told the genius bar what happened, and I already did the so called "steps" that apple reccommended on the site, which was reset network settings, restore iPhone. The genius bar gave me a replacement phone, so I was expecting that the problem would be over, but it isn't. It seems that it's iOS 6.1.3 which is the case of most public complaints on apple iPhone products. Not even 3 weeks after I got the phone replaced, it is doing it again, so I suspect I'm just going to get a replacement again? Unfortunately I only have until 5th of july 2013 until my 1 year warranty is up. After that, any issue I have, I have to purchase apple care. People are expecting this problem to be fixed but I don't see it being solved any time soon. This is horrible and really low, because I have been a good customer, when I talk to the people at the genius bar, I show the utmost respect I can to them for the work they put into their job, but somewhere there is a problem where something has gone wrong. Because of that, people that only have a one year warranty (which i received because I purchased my apple iPhone at an Optus outlet, once that one year warranty is up, I have to pay for a problem that isn't even my fault? That isn't how it should work, you should be fixing this problem so people can be happy customers and leave happy. Obviously you don't all know how to do your jobs, because if you did, we wouldn't have this problem. I would like a replacement phone, ONCE AGAIN. If this problem occurs again, I will simply stop buying your products, and lose faith in your company, your's sincerely, Jack Maher.

This is a user to user help forum only. You are not addressing Apple here.
My iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, and iPad 2 are running 6.1.3 with no such problem and the same with the overwhelming majority of iOS devices running 6.1.3.

If you're really holding down those keys immediately after pressing the power button, yet they don't behave as expected, you may have some sort of hardware problem.
Do you have access to another keyboard that you could try?
How is that keyboard connected to your iMac? Your iMac probably has three USB ports. I'd try the keyboard in each of them in turn.

  • 10.2.3   G4  ERASE & RESTORE can`t reboot from CD-ROM

In advance thankyou for any help
I want to give my old G4 to my mother-in-law. Lucky lady! So I would just like to reinstall the OS from scratch and remove anything else.
1/ When I put in CD-ROM push power button and hold C. I get a window asking me to restart my Mac.
2/ If I look at the CD-ROM while in my user space, I can only see `Installer Mac OS X application` and `Installer applications et gestion Classic` ......there is no Restore application.
If I click on Installer Mac OS X and push Restart button in the application window as requested. My Mac restarts and comes back to the same window as above, asking me to restart my Mac.
3/ I`ve also used the Startup Disk application under System Preferences with the same result.
I don`t know if the problem is related to the fact that 10.2.3 came with OS 9?
The machine currently is upto 10.2.8.
    G4   Mac OS X (10.2.x)   CD-ROM Reboot problem

There is no Restore on any retail mac installation disks.
Restore disks are usually machine specific in most cases the restore should be done from the disks that came with the mac.
There are also machine specific install disks. Many of the imac install disks may boot another mac but will give you a troublesome installation. Other install disks that came with a specific mac will not boot another mac.
If you purchased a retail install disk for your mac or are using the disks that came with your mac then they should work. Making the assumption that you are using the correct install disks your mac should boot from them. If it does not then there is a hardware issue. Many times this can be resolved by resetting the pmu.

  • Files don't open or will only open 'Read Only'. Server reboot resolves issue for 1 day

    Greetings!
We have a SharePoint 2010 Foundation server that I recently inherited. I'm a novice at SharePoint, but let me cut to the chase.
Users have recently (within the last week) started experiencing a problem where if they open a file, it will error either saying that the file cannot be opened, or it will only open in read only. This occurs with Excel, Word, Power Point docs. They CAN however,
open and edit these documents in the browser with web apps. After launching the full office application, if they click 'Edit Document', it will appear to switch to editable mode, but the title bar will still contain 'Read Only' and they can't save changes
directly back and are forced to do a 'Save As'. The only thing I have been able to do to remedy this is to quiesce the server and reboot it. After reboot, it will work until something magical happens overnight and it's broken again the next morning. I'm trying
to hunt down what this magical event is but could use some help.
Note that after I reboot the server, users can access and modify normally, no rebooting of workstations or closing of any applications (including the browser that's already on SharePoint) for it to start working, so I believe we can eliminate an endpoint
    issue.
    Server Specs:
VMWare VM version 9 (VMTools up-to-date)
    16GB RAM
    250GB HDD
    2x vCPU
Windows 2008 R2 (latest updates installed)
SQL DB Hosted remote on a SQL 2008 R2 server running on Windows 2008 R2. The SQL database is set up in a mirror configuration.
I'm sure I missed a lot of pertinent information but want to get something out there. Thanks in advance.

There are warnings that repeat every ~1hour and one critical that occurs daily. Under each error, I added notes of what I've done to remedy.

  • Help -can't reboot after restore

My son needed to run some Microsoft CAD software on his iMac.  So we successfully partitioned the hard drive, installed boot camp, and got the microsoft partition working.  We then restored the mac partition from his time capsule back up. Restore appeared to be ok but then the system wouldn't reboot - just hung on grey screen and spinning wheel.
I've tried using the install disk (snow leopard) to clear the mac side of the drive and recover again with a slightly earlier back up - same result.
I've use the instal disk to do disk repair - nothing found - then did a permission repair - lots of changes.  Then did disk repair again - nothing found. then rebooted holding the alt key to give me the choice between the two partitions.  Again on mac side hung on grey screen and spinning wheel. Microsoft side booting fine.
I've disconnected everything and am using a wired keyboard as I read some stuff that suggested this in case a device was causing an issue.
    Anybody got any ideas?

Normally it should work within 5 mins .
    Try this steps
01.Remove all other devices from computer (Network cable , printer, card reader) , leave only the power cable , usb keyboard and mouse
    02. restart your mac and asap and when  its restart press this 4 keys from the keyboard
    keys : apple(cmd) +Option (alt)+P + R.
    03. your mac shoud restart in this point ,, DONT relese the keys. so this should happen again and your mac should restart 4 times continuesly. after your imac restart after  4th time you can relese the keys.
    04. Then try to press the " shift" key and see if its loading the OS from safeboot
    Hope that helps

  • EA3500 Dropping connection/rebooting - Vlc issues etc

    Hello Everyone,
I would like to thank everyone in advance for taking the time to help me.
My router is around 4 months old. I have a small-ish 3 bedroom home. I've been having some signal issues with the router since the beggining even when less than 10 feet away from the actual router. It happens on and off so I've kinda dealt with it.
Lately I've been trying to use VLC player's web based uploader for my ipad to upload videos. It did work a few times. I punched in the IP and voila videos would upload no problem however starting yesterday each time i drop a file the router drops all of the devices including the computer connected via ethernet cable and reboots itself with the green light blinking in the back.
I am seriously helpless and wanna take a hammer to this piece of sh*t but I figured I'll try my luck with you guys.
So far here's what I've tried
    Reboot
    Factory reset
changing channels and SSID names on both 2 and 5 GHz
    restore firmware
    run the cd etc etc
anyone have any idea whats next?

Ya I tend to agree Dave, 5Ghz can be used for just more than gaming however 5Ghz is best in line of site as building materials will effect it due to it being such a high frequency. Channels 1, 6, 11 are best for 2.4Ghz and 13 if you are in the europian regions since they have that channel there only. 5Ghz is good for media streaming too if set up well or general internet.
Most cable systems use 1500 MTU values. I recommend that the user contact the ISP and verify the correct MTU value. I believe once the ISP value and signal quality can be checked and verified, then the router should work well if set up well. Need to check surrounding environment for nieghbors...
IMO, I've see odd issues with Arris modems and I persoanly will not use them if possible. I recommend using Motorola SB 6 series modems. Unfortunatly Arris bought the inernet modem division from Motorola. There still producing the SB 6 series modems though. The 6141 is avail at retail stores.
