Sigh.  I just don't understand iTunes Match.

Forgive me.  I'm an idiot.  I'll just list questions below for anyone to answer.  Thank you in advance for any help.
I've got a 160gb ipod (my music device 99% of time) and an iphone (rarely use for music).
I've got a library of about 16,000+ songs, 60% ripped, 25% from emusic, 10% bootlegs, 5% from misc places like Amazon downloads.
So I understand that only songs not in Apple's library get uploaded.  Pretty much all the bootlegs had to be uploaded.  I think I've completed that process.
My main interest was having a cloud backup should my hard drives fail.  I'm pretty sure that's what iTunes Match is.  If I lost everything I could just download it from the cloud right?
What about tracks that have errors in them?  I've got a couple ripped tracks that skip.  Is there a way to download a clean 256kbs version from the cloud into my itunes library?
My wife has an iTunes library with approximately 2000 tracks.  Is there a way to get hers backed up into the cloud?
I now have a ton of random crap in my iTunes library.  Single tracks by one artist I never downloaded, misc videos, etc.  No idea where those came from.
On the iPhone I notice it's showing my whole library with a cloud icon next to the song.  I suppose it lets me stream the track or download it if I want but I never need to use the iphone for music so whatever.
Any thoughts?  Particularly on the skipping tracks?  THANK YOU.

My main interest was having a cloud backup should my hard drives fail.  I'm pretty sure that's what iTunes Match is.  If I lost everything I could just download it from the cloud right?
Wrong.  Because what you have in the cloud is a mix of uploads (actual copies of your tracks) and "matches" (an attempt to find a copy of your song in the iTunes store), you do NOT have a true backup of your music in the cloud.  Examples abound of explict tracks being matched to clean versions, long tracks being matched to short versions, mono Beatles tracks being matched to stereo (mono isn't even for sale in the store), and on and on.
Nothing takes the place of a true local backup, and with the cost of an external drive so lo, there's really no reason not to get one.
What about tracks that have errors in them?  I've got a couple ripped tracks that skip.  Is there a way to download a clean 256kbs version from the cloud into my itunes library?
If you have a situation where you were lucky enough to get a damaged track to match, then yes, you can download a clean copy.  If it is only a few songs and you are sure they are damaged and sure they did match, the easiest way to get the Match track will be to delete the original from your library (and be sure not to delete from the cloud).  ZFrom there, you should get the track name with a download icon next to it.
However, if the track was damaged and marked as ineligible, then Match just skipped it.  You'll want to get a clean copy fromthe CD in that case.
My wife has an iTunes library with approximately 2000 tracks.  Is there a way to get hers backed up into the cloud?
Yes.  You should be able to turn on iTunes Match in her copy of iTunes.  You will be asked if you want to add the computer.  Say yes and use the same ID you used to sign up to iTunes Match.
I now have a ton of random crap in my iTunes library.  Single tracks by one artist I never downloaded, misc videos, etc.  No idea where those came from.
Chances are that at some point you or someone in your family either purchased them or got them for free through some promotion like Free Music Tuesdays.  Even if they were deleted from your iTunes library, they'd still be in your purchase history.
On the iPhone I notice it's showing my whole library with a cloud icon next to the song.  I suppose it lets me stream the track or download it if I want but I never need to use the iphone for music so whatever.
Yes, by default with iTunes Match turned on, your Music app is set to show y ou all the music available in the cloud, plus all that is stored on your iPhone.  iTunes Match does not "stream" music to your phone.  even if you just decide to play one track that isn't already on your phone, it is downloaded in the background.
Given the number of questions you have, it sounds like a little reading would help you a lot.  Here's a good place to start. If you get an error, just hit the reload button.

I've just signed up to iTunes Match as I have songs on my iPhone 4 which wont sync with iTunes as they are from CDs but I can't see my music in the cloud now. Anyone had the same problem and have an easy fix?

    What fixed it for me:
On your computer, open iTunes > My iPhone (or whatever name you gave your iPhone) > "Music" page
    Uncheck "Sync Music"
    Click "Sync" button (bottom right)
    Let it run and finish
Uncheck the box for every song, playlist, etc.
Click "Sync" button (bottom right) (This step may be unnecessary, but I did it and got the result I wanted.)
    Let it run and finish
Check the boxes for the music you want on your iPhone
    Click "Sync" button (bottom right)
    Let it run and finish
See if that doesn't work for you.  I tried a lot of things that did nothing, but this seems to have fixed it, and quickly.

  • I have just done the new itunes update and now it wont let me sync my phone ?

    Hi Guys,
I have just done the new Itunes update and now when i plug my phone into the computer it dose not recongnise my phone through itunes and will not let me snyc, backup or update it. What did i do ? sorry what should i do ?

Connect the iPod to your computer and look at the storage used by the various categories as shown in the colored bargarph in iTunes.
    Come back with the results.
An "other" larger than about 1 1/2 GB indicates corrupted files.
What is the Other on my iPhone and How to Remove It
What is "Other" and What Can I Do About It?
    and as necessary:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync/delete all music and resync
To delete all music go to Settings>General>Usage>Storage>Music>Tap edit in upper right and then tap the minus sign by All Music
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

  • I have an Apple TV 3 and have just signed up to iTunes Match. However there is no toggle in the Apple TV settings (I've looked in iTunes store) to turn on iTunes Match.

I have an Apple TV 3 and have just signed up to iTunes Match. However there is no toggle in the Apple TV settings (I've looked in iTunes store) to turn on iTunes Match.

There would normally be more than 4.
If AppleTV does not 'see' the internet you get Settings and Computers alone.
I'm in UK too - there have been some reported outages of Apple services today globally.
First thing I would do here is unpower and restart AppleTV and also maybe your router.
I'll check mine to see if music is still listed.

  • HT204074 Don't have iTunes Match so apparently I can't delete music from iCloud?

How do I delete songs from the iCloud when I don't use Music Match? Somehow, songs I don't want just automatically add themselves to my iPhone after I've manually added only songs I want to be on it... One particular song (I purchased by mistake) is no longer my iTunes library but keeps being added back.
    Please Help!!!

You can't permanently delete any items from your purchase history, but you should be able to hide songs so that they don't show in the Purchased tab for redownloading (that also hide them from the Music app if you have Settings > Music > Show All Music 'on') : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4919
(For info you've posted in the Using iPad forum.)

  • Is it just me, or is iTunes Match a "scam"?

All right, so here are a few disturbing observations I've made while using the new (for the rest of us) service of iTunes Match...
    1st observation:
I have some songs in my library marked by iTunes Match as "Matched" which had wrong tags on purpose... for example, take... Carlos Gardel's "Por una cabeza".
Since I didn't have this song's album name, I tagged it under the album field: "Search for album..." in order to remind me of searching the corresponding album for that particular song. Well... iTunes Match happened to match this song anyway! So I deleted it in order to download the "higher quality" version which is supposedly, already in the iTunes Store servers (I don't know why since I don't even know which album(s) have this version of the song).
    2nd observation:
So I have a song named "Lambada" with no artist tag, same "Search for album..." album tag and nothing else. Well... iTunes Match managed to find my song and allowed me to download a higher quality version of it!
    3rd observation:
I have a faulty song from Telepopmusik's Genetic World album, more than 8 minutes long (because of like... 3 minutes of silence this file has), when this song is supposed to have a play time of 5:05 or something. And yes... iTunes Match, found my 8 minutes version and when I deleted my file, I downloaded the higher quality version of... 8 minutes (with the added 3 mins silence song)! (which iTunes Store doesn't even have in its catalogue...)
So after thinking about this for a minute... I've reached the following conclusion...
    1. iTunes Match doesn't use tags as a method for matching songs. (otherwise, my Lambada song would be impossible to match)
    2. iTunes Match seems to just locally convert your songs to an AAC version (and not downloading the iTunes Store catalogue song, even though it says so), otherwise, my Telepopmusik's song would be transformed into the iTunes catalogue 5 min version of the same song...
    3. If those theories are correct, then yes... we are paying for the songs we already had in the first place, with no song upgrading whatsoever (not one you could've easily achieved by just right clicking a song and choosing - CREATE AAC VERSION).
Please correct me if there is anything fallacious in my reasoning... I'm just a little disturbed about this...
    Best.

People, please read before commenting! It is tiresome having to repeat things...
    Mike Connelly wrote:
How are you checking to see if a song is matched or uploaded?  You can right click the top headers in iTunes and get two new ones, one with cloud icons and the other with text saying Matched/Uploaded/etc.
If you're deleting and a download gets you the same file then it was probably uploaded instead of matched.
As I told roebeet on my first reply: "About your second point, yes, I do have the iCloud Status column enabled that's how I began noticing this weird things, and no... the Telepopmusik song was matched since the beginning, that's why it makes me doubt about all of this."
    @KeithJenner,
Obviously Apple won't explicitly say it... that would be openly accepting that you clean music, but I sure can tell that everyone understood the implications of the service... Anyway about your point:
"As for the issues stated here about getting the old song back, it has been raised a number of times on this and other forums and every time it is discovered that it was indeed an uploaded file rather than a matched one. I'd be surprised to find that isn't the case here, but I suppose you never know."
As you can see from my quote above, my song was matched the first time I ran iTM, I THEN deleted my file, and downloaded the 256 kbps and yep, it was my own file... I mean, I don't care anymore, I've already paid for a year, so I'll hope it gets better with time, but what I can say now is that, Apple's advertisings are misleading, I took the bite and unless the service gives me a REAL benefit, I won't be renewing my subscription.
What I'm trying right now, is to make people be aware of the real "features" of the service.
Anyway, thank you everyone for your comments.
    Best.

  • I can't seem to copy & paste while I am using Firefox; but I can with Internet Explorer. What am I doing wrong? I guess I just don't understand how to do it.

I am working in Ancestry.com. If I am in Internet Explorer, I can copy a picture & then paste it in my pictures, on my computer. If I am using Firefox, I don't understand which things to do to copy & then paste a picture, like I can in Internet Explorer. I prefer to use Firefox, but need to be able to use this copy & paste feature, often. I just downloaded Firefox, & started using it, again, yesterday. I just got a new computer in June.

When you run out of keyboard short cuts, enter the addtional names in the name field in the keyword editor. That will start a new Keyword Collection. You can apply the addtional keywords to multiple cllips on the event browser. Or you can drag the clips into the Collection in the Event Library.

  • Don't have ITunes Match but I can't delete downloaded songs

So I DO NOT have iTunes Match however my music app had iCloud songs that I could download since some were not on my iPhone. I didn't want any of them but accidentally downloaded a few and now I can't get rid of them by swiping left in the app. I turned off show all music so I wouldn't download anymore. Also I thought I could delete them from my library on my computer but they don't show up. I'm running iOS 7 if that helps at all. Thanks

You are probably thinking about Apple's USB Power Adapter Takeback Program.
It ended October 2013, and they weren't free anyway.

  • I have an iphone 6 with the most recent iOS.  iTunes Match is on.  Music app only showing songs purchased on iTunes and no playlists are displayed.  Just happened when updating iTunes Match.  Solutons?

I have an iPhone 6 with 64 GB of memory.  I have iTunes Match turned on my account and on the phone.  Suddenly, the Music app is only displaying music purchased directly from iTunes and no playlists are displayed.  This occurred after updating iTunes Match on my PC; when new music did not appear, I turned off iTunes Match off/on the PC then did the same on iPhone 6.  It looks like iTunes Match is trying to do a full download to the phone but it never completes.  Ideas?

    Hi Moonage Daydreamer01,
I'm sorry to hear you are having these issues on your iPhone. If you continue to have issues with iTunes Match, you may find the information and troublehshooting steps outlined in the following article helpful:

  • Just a question about iTunes Match....

Is anybody else have a problem with itunes Match....cause i am...i drag a song list into itunes...imatch starts to scan then it stops and give me a itunes store error...i log out of itunes a few times...then bag in and it works sometimes...now today it is not working!!

In iOS 5 all music is downloaded to permanent storage when you listen to it. It is similar in iOS 6 except the "streamed" songs are not store in permanent memory on the iOS device.

  • Why are my non-iTunes purchased songs in my iCloud? I don't have iTunes Match.

I have never used or purchased iTunes Match. How did my music library wind up in my iCloud? I can see them there as being in the iCloud on my iPhone.
    Thanks

Not sure why this is happening and it is a pain. Once the Purchased list sorted by 'date added' go to the left most column and select the top - in my Purchased list the new items go to the bottom and I drag them back up to the top position.

I am also hoping that i will be able to do a restor eform the cloud once i get this sorted

    Hello, fletch72.
Thank you for the question.  I see you have uninstalled, reinstalled and the error is persisting.  Try one more time uninstalling all components of iTunes in the order specified of the article below.  These steps must be processed in the order specified or the error will persist.  Once this is done attempt to install iTunes again.

  • I know this has been asked a million times but I just don't understand?

I have photoshop elements 7 and Nikon D300. When I take pictures with my camera the color is fine in the live view screen. When I download them to Nikon and to  "My Pictures" and look at them the color is fine. When I email them the color is fine. As soon as I put them in Photoshop Elements 7 they are a few shades lighter. It is not the monitor because the color is the way it is suppose to be when the photo is in any other program. I don't want to print them off my printer, I just find it hard to edit the photo in any way when it is so much lighter than it is if I just look at it in my picture files. How can i adjust just the way the photos look on element so they will match my email, my picture file and my camera?

Two possibilities that could explain your symptoms:
    1. You have your camera set to use the Adobe RGB color space, and you're viewing the photos in the Organizer.   There is a known bug where the Organizer incorrectly shows the colors of such photos.   You can quickly test whether this is your problem by opening a problem photo in the full Editor -- if the colors look different than in the Organizer, then you're encountering this bug.  A workaround is to set your camera to use the sRGB color space.
    2. You have a color profile associated with your display in Windows that was probably installed by software provided by your display's manufacturer.  PSE uses such profiles to more accurrately display colors. But the built-in profiles provided by manufacturers may not be very accurate.  If you're satisfied with the colors of your photos when viewed outside of PSE, then disassocate the profile from the display:

  • HT4929 I just don't understand these two options!!

I have 1 iPod touch 2g not iOS5 compatible but several iPhone 4's, iPod touch 3g's and iPads.  Should I choose the second option to move to iCloud, where it states not all my devices are compatible?  Then what happens if I make them compatible later??  Are my currently compatible devices then somehow crippled in iCloud with this choice?
Apple, why does this have to be so hard a decision...MobileMe was fine!!!

You can migrate your MobileMe account to iCloud at http://me.com/move even with Snow Leopard - when asked to confirm that you have Lion on your Mac, just lie and say 'yes'.
If you have MobileMe mail set up to collect mail from external POP accounts you should cancel this before migrating, or you may find it still working in iCloud (where it isn't supposed to) and with no way of stopping it. You may find the MobileMe email settings will continue to work for a time after migrating but it will stop eventually so you should not rely on this. You should delete your MobileMe email account from Mail.
You can then set up Mail manually in Snow Leopard to access iCloud email; it's a slight fudge because the 'wizard' will attempt to connect you to MobileMe as soon as you enter an @me.com address. The process, which includes a workaround for this, is described here:
    http://www.wilmut.webspace.virginmedia.com/notes/icloudmail.html
You may be able to sync your calendars to iCloud by means of an unsupported hack, and there is a convoluted hack which has been reported as working for Address Book (and as not working by others - I've not tried it), but iCloud's other facilities will not work. This page outlines the situation when you migrate to iCloud, including a link to the calendar hack:
    http://www.wilmut.webspace.virginmedia.com/notes/icloudSL.html
You can set up Mail on Leopard using the method linked to above but you will not be able to sync calendars or contacts with iCloud.
There are a couple of third-party solutions which may be of interest.
BusyCal is an iCal-like calendar application with extra facilities: it can sync with the iCloud Calendar while running on Leopard, Snow Leopard or Lion. A single user licence (two machines allowed) is $49.99.
Soho Organizer can sync Calendars and Contacts with iCloud on Leopard, Snow Leopard and Lion. A single user licence (multiple machines allowed) is $99.99.
(I have no connection with either firm.)
I would have expected that you would be able to sync older devices using iTunes, but note that if you do this, all devices have to be synced using iTunes as the calendars and contacts have to reside under 'On My Mac' - you cannot sync calendars you are syncing to iCloud using iTunes, so it's one or the other.
    There is no Keychain syncing.
As you will be aware, the iDisk will be removed and its contents deleted. This page examines some third-party alternatives:
    http://rfwilmut.net/migrate3
The Backup application will sync to local disks or DVD but AFAIK will not sync to any online service other than MobileMe.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
In order to change your Apple ID or password for your iCloud account on your iOS device, you need to delete the account from your iOS device first, then add it back using your updated details. (Settings > iCloud, scroll down and hit "Delete Account")
Providing you are simply updating your existing details and not changing to another account, when you delete your account, all the data that is synced with iCloud will also be deleted from the device (but not from iCloud), but will be synced back to your device when you login again.
In order to change your Apple ID or password for your iCloud account on your computer, you need to sign out of the account from your computer first, then sign back in using your updated details. (System Preferences > iCloud, click the sign out button)
In order to change your Apple ID or password for your iTunes account on your iOS device, you need to sign out from your iOS device first, then sign back in using your updated details. (Settings > store, scroll down and tap your ID)
If you are using iMessages or FaceTime, you will also need to log out and into your ID there too.
