Sign-in fails on Mac Pro

I tried the Messages Beta and it works fine on my MacBook Pro. However, on my Mac Pro it does not allow me to sign in with iMessage. I always get this error sheet:
Needless to say I did try a couple of times, but always get the same error.
Since iMessage works on the MacBook Pro and on my iPhone, I think I can exclude any problems with my Apple ID. The problem should be on my Mac Pro. I also tried with a completely clean account there, but that did not change the result.
I analyzed the working sign-in process on the MacBook Pro and found that Messages appears to include parts of the FaceTime registration process. It did write to the relevant plists and also added a FaceTime-item to my keychain. On the Mac Pro however, FaceTime cannot work, since there is no camera.
Could this be the reason why the iMessage sign-in fails? Did anyone get iMessage to work on a camera-less Mac?

I tried again today and the sign-in worked. So I guess it was a server-side problem after all.

  • Multiple external drives failed on Mac Pro. Any idea why?

This is the third drive that has failed since I was assigned this Mac Pro at work a few weeks ago, and the drive was purchased less than a week ago. The other two were older drives.
They would suddenly stop being readable. Sometimes there was a problem ejecting the drive before it stopped becomeing readable (message would say the drive couldn't be ejected because another program is using it, when there were no programs open). One of them eventually mounted again and I recovered some of the files (but some files weren't readable when I tried to copy them). But that was just luck as they all seem now to be consistently unreadable. When I plug them in I get the message: "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer"... same if I plug it into a different computer.
And when I try to repair, it shows this: http://i.imgur.com/ivK9d.png
Any idea what would cause this? When it happed to the second drive, I just thought it was a fluke... but now a third, brand new drive? Something about the computer must be causing it.

The first two were WD and the third was Seagate - all in their own enclosures. They MIGHT have been plugged into the same FW800
So we're talking different vendors, different enclosures -- but likely the same bus, possibly even the same port, and different hosts (Mac Pro and MacBook).
Very difficult to say at this point, because two different computers are actually involved and you're not sure how and which is involved. The problem does sound like a hardware issue -- but, if it is, is it the FW controller on the MBP or on the MP? I can't tell.
Your pic shows DU can't fix the drive, but can it re-format the drive? (If the drive is FW/USB hybrid, try USB if FW doesn't work.) If yes, the error might be hardware or software; if no, the problem is likely hardware.
Although it's difficult, you must keep track of what drive is connected to what machine and on which port, otherwise you'll only fix this by being lucky. Also, check if you have on either Mac software which might interfere with disk writing. Of course, I assume you always eject the ext'l drives properly before you disconnect them physically.

  • Enter Machine Password DNS Update Failed on Mac Pro 10.6.6

Windows 2008 R2 Active Directory with several PCs and 3 MACs, all three at 10.6.6.
Only one, the Mac Pro, is slow to access network resources, gets Enter Machine Password: DNS Update Failed on Console, and is much slower to open webpages than the other 2 MACs; they work fine. I know that AD is configured right since I have no network errors on them.
Can bind and unbind as expected, can access Mac from AD Server as well as other PC/Macs, so this issue is not like most all other posts in that everything works except slow network (opening a network share gets the spinning wait cursor).
    Any Ideas?
    TIA

On the offending Mac open System Preferences->Network pane and highlight the port that you are connecting to the domain. Then in the right side of the pane click on the word "Advanced". In that drop-down select the DNS tab and make sure it has the same DNS that the domain uses. You can use thew + button to add the correct DNS servers. Also while in the Network pane, Advanced, select the WINS tab and fill it the appropriate settings for the Windows Domain.
Also on the offending Mac open System Preferences->Date & Time and make sure the Map Location is correct and also you are using the same Time server that the Domain uses (you can type in the Time Server address in the Time Server field.
Lastly are you using DHCP or Static in your Domain?

  • Windows 7 Boot fails on Mac Pro 1,1 (long-standing issue)

i am having a long-standing problem on my first generation (1,1) mac pro where i have an installation of Windows 7 "under" boot camp. this installation involved some kind of minor mac hack that involved writing something to ISO and/or a CD Rom and then getting the installation onto my hard drive.
right now i am not sure if i should get rid of my tech guy, buy the new mac pro as soon as it comes out, boot into safe mode, re-install windows 7 or all of the above. help please?
lately if i try and Option Boot into this volume i get a Windows closed down incorrectly error and then i hit start windows normally it will crash out and restart the computer in mac OS (i.e. in another option boot volume).
at one point the windows 7 boot was not working at all and we discovered that i had to TURN OFF my G-Tech 3 TB backup drive in order to get the Mac to boot into Windows.
i am wondering if i should focus my energies by trying to boot into Safe Mode (and if so what to do if/when i get there) but also whether this appears to be an issue with the Mac Pro, the G-Tech external, Windows or some combination of all plus some user error thrown in for good measure.
i absolutely need to have a volume of windows 7 running and this is a long-standing issue at this point.
i am also running a Carbon Copy Cloner of this volume (the one that has all my OS's) on a daily basis to another internal hard drive (which i assume does not matter but i figure to mention it).
any ideas on what to do??
i am planning at some point to buy the next release of the Mac Pro so i can upgrade the desktop to Mountain Lion to match the laptop but it seems like i should be able to get this working on my end now...
    TIA
P.S. I /am/ also noticing that my User Photo periodically drops off and i just see two blank icons (one for me and one for Guest) when i have to login. i set it to a photo and then a week or two or a boot or two later it will disappear.

    hi all,
a report back after hacking my way through siberia over here:
turns out there are bad sectors on my drive that some third party program discovered.
the disk is on it's way back to WD with a replacement in the works.
fortunately my internal cloned backup got me back up to speed with mac os but unfortunately i was not yet setup to clone my windows boot camp backup so i will be installing windows 7 boot camp one more time on this drive...

  • Adobe DESTROYED my Mac Pro, someone help!!!!

Hello, everyone. This is an epic post but it's an epic situation for me. Please read the whole thing and offer advice, I am petrified with fear right now! My early 2008 Mac Pro (8 core, 2.3 ghz, 4tb, 16gb ram, Quadro 5600 GPU, OS X 10.5.6) has acted like a God since I got her in February '08. Haven't had a single problem with it, -except- when running Adobe CS4, which opens a world of hurt.
Any time I use Premiere Pro, Soundbooth, Encore, or Media Encoder, I get little windows that say 'null pict handle with error of 0.' There is now way to make them leave. Even when the programs work (rarely), I get those windows. Media Encoder, however, has never worked since I upgraded to CS4. I have run the CS4 clean script several times. There isn't a single trace of CS3 left on my computer.
That's the history of my Mac Pro CS4 problem. Here's where I ended up:
This morning I decided to uninstall Master Collection, run the clean script, and reinstall CS4, even though I've done it five or six times already and knew it probably wouldn't make Media Encoder work or the Null Pict Handle windows go away. I guess I'm an optimist. But when I went to uninstall CS4, I was informed that an original copy of the uninstaller didn't exist, leaving me unable to get rid of the buggy software! Then, I noticed when I clicked on Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, Dreamweaver, InDesign, Fireworks, or Contribute, the icons turned to question marks, and they ceased to appear in my Applications folder.
So I called Adobe tech support. God help me.
The tech support guy, name of Kelly, seemed good natured enough. I really felt like he wanted to help. He had me hold shift down while signing in to my Mac Pro, and sign in as 'Root.' I have no idea what any of that means or does, but he said to trust him. Then I was told to delete anything with Adobe affiliation. Then I was told to reset disk permissions on my boot drive. Finally, he told me to reinstall CS4.
Halfway into the install, he said, and I quote, "Tim it sounds like everything's gonna work out fine for you, there haven't been any snags yet so you should be alright. I'm gonna let you go, just call if you have any problems."
I wasn't comfortable with him leaving the line until I was sure my computer had been safely worked on, but he insisted he had to help other customers. So like an idiot, I let him go.
CS4 finished installing. Everything seemed fine. I figured I'd restart the computer just to be safe, and do some After Effects work. I clicked restart and everything went along as expected at first. Computer shut down, turned back on, got the beautiful Mac chime, the Apple logo with the bars scrolling around it, and BAM---- screen goes black and my Mac Pro is off.
And now... that's all I get. I turn the computer on, get the chime, the Apple logo, and then she turns off. Holding shift down does nothing. Letting the computer cool off doesn't help, either. The people at Adobe won't take responsibility, but I didn't do a single thing they didn't tell me to. Add to that, there hasn't been ONE problem with this computer until I introduced it to CS4. No problems with Final Cut Studio 2, Shake, Logic, or Blender. Just Adobe.
If anyone has any advice, I will be forever grateful. I am terrified right now that my baby, my 13,000 dollar beast of a computer, is dead on account of Adobe Master Collection, a bunch of programs I've almost completely quit using in favor of FCP.
    Thanks!
-Thankfully, I have most everything of importance backed up on my time capsule.-

A few things you can try:
    1) I hope you've backed up everything!
    2) Pop in your OS X install DVD, hold down 'd'. Do a hardware test and see if anything is wrong
    3) As above, but let the machine run to the installation screen, then open 'Disk Utility' and repair the main drive.
    4) I hope you've backed up...!
    5) Re-install your OS. Zero out your main boot drive and re-install OS X, then, if everything is working, install CS4.
    6) Did I mention a backup???
    7) If you have a time machine backup you can restore from it to salvage anything you need.
I have CS4 running on my Mac Pro and it runs OK. Good Luck!

  • Mac Pro Failed to wake from sleep

    Hello All,
I've had my Mac Pro since Aug. 2007. Never had any problems of any kind until this morning.
To wake from sleep (as I always do): depressed arrow key (10:43 AM). There was a delay - then the spinning beach ball for about 2 min. I did a hard shutdown, waited a bit, then restarted at 10:52 AM. Boot up was (as always) quick.
I logged into my (usual) non-admin account and observed:
When all start up items were loaded: Finder windows appeared approximately as follows:
    1. A window showing the (not sure of proper term) "internal folders" of main boot up volume.
    2. A window showing the internal folders stored on my mirrored RAID back up disk(s)
    3. A window showing the internal folders of my bootable back up.
    4. A window showing all 3 disk icons[ Main boot, Bootable backup and the RAID].
I closed all of these windows. [Didn't think too much about it but it's not normal to have these widows appear] SO -
    Next:
Then I logged out and logged into my admin account to check the system log with console.
It showed an event from last night which I could not interpret but it did not appear to reveal serious problems (something about not being able to make network connection).
But - the second item on the System Log showed the "wake from sleep" sequence (at 10:43 AM).
I'm going to post the entire wake from sleep log below but first I'll state what was obvious to me:
Startup of CPU #1, #2 and #3 appear first - there is NO #4 CPU!
The log for the manual startup at 10:52 showed some apparent problems as I note below.
Next: Once logged in as admin - I launched Activity Monitor just to assure myself that all four CPUs were at least registering - and they were / are.
Hoping someone here can more thoroughly analyze this log report and give me an idea of the cause of the failure to waken.
Naturally, I won't want to put the Mac Pro to sleep again until I'm sure this isn't a "permanent" problem requiring further action (including service, of course).
Also noticed a statement about some app not having correct permissions (apparently at the System level) and something about removing several orphaned files. There's a warning about CarbonCopyCloner scheduled tasks as well. But there my understanding ends.
    Thanks in advance:

    ==== end====

    Hello Alexandre,
First - thank you very much for taking time to offer thorough and informed advice.
However - as indicated in my last post, I have performed the first (and very basic) "test" - I checked to see if Xgrid was included in my network prefs and found that it was. I unchecked it because I don't have the setup to make use of processor resources on the other Mac I have in my home network. (And that other Mac is an old G4 eMac - not much help anyway!)
More specifically: it's apparent that I was using Xgrid "inappropriately" so I think the System Log really indicates that no connection can be found -because there isn't one!
I too still wonder about the "missing CPU 4" but, overall, I see no other indications that there's a problem. Activity Monitor shows all four CPU cores and they're all showing activity. I have not seen (or noticed) this in prior System Log reports so, if I see this again - I'll renew efforts to find it's significance and take appropriate action.
I then put my Mac Pro to sleep, waited a bit, then depressed an arrow key: the machine woke from sleep normally. This "solves" the immediate problem of abnormal wakening - at least I'm satisfied that it does and will continue monitoring for any similar "misbehaviors."
Power Management: I have purposely avoided doing anything with Power Management once I had it set to my liking. That is, I set the screen to sleep in 1 hour, I set the hard drive to "never" (sleep) and only use the Sleep menu command to put the Mac Pro to sleep. My dictum is to "not fix what isn't proved to be broken." Again - if I continue to have problems or new problems crop up, I will then go ahead and start making changes such as those you mention. (Like deleting com.apple.PowerManagemetn.plist)
Next: I did already run permissions repair and may do so again anytime I see problems which could be connected to permissions. Since I have "taken Xgrid" out of the picture, I don't think this particular permissions issue is going to be a problem under my current set up.
CarbonCopyCloner: Here we have a bit of a conundrum. I need! to keep CCC "available" to run scheduled back up tasks. I was given (a very expensive) 1TB wireless backup drive for Xmas and - through long trial and error - found that CCC is the most appropriate back up application for that drive.
For now: I consider that the problem is a bug in CCC and will contact Mr. Bombich about this.
Again: I do appreciate your pointing out this and the other things. You have helped me think through what could have been a very complex process in trouble shooting.
I think that my issue turned out to be simple: I may have accidentally touched the wrong key or key combination when I moved to wake the Mac Pro from sleep. I think that Xgrid was a problem but that now seems to be eliminated. The Mac Pro is now waking normally - which was my original objective.
Oh, and just to be clear: I forgot to mention above that I did re-examine the System Log and there are now no signs of the items in the log I posted originally here.

  • Backup failed - error occurred while copying..  Mac Pro after restore

    Hi gang.
After the most recent EFI Mac Pro firmware update, along with a software update... I could not reboot - got the prohibitary sign. After some time on the phone with Applecare senior tech, i did an erase install from disk with a restore from TM. Seemed to fix my issue, and could reboot as per usual, but I then began getting TM failures with...
"The backup was not performed because an error occurred while copying files to the backup disk."
It also said to try again later, restart, and use Disk Utility to repair the TM volume. I did all of these (no probs in Disk Utils) and got the same issue... I decided to give up my month of backups, and finally erased the disk, and time machine got through 2/3 of the 1.37tb of data on the 2tb disk before I got the same message. Tried again and got more data between more failure messages. It's now down to what it thinks is 3.07gb of data as it begins to copy, and copies to 4.36 gb of data, then says it is cleaning up, then fails with the same message... again and again. The drives being backed up and the TM hard drive are all internal disks. Any hints on how to get this working properly?
    Thanks
    Dave

I migrated to my Mac Pro from a G5 several months ago... my boot drive is a 2x100gb solid state drive array. Everything was working flawlessly until I installed an EFI firmware update, and some software updates a few days ago, and my machine would not reboot. I had to erase and install from install disks, and restore from a TM backup from that morning. The catch is that the disk I installed to had some recovered files (data rescue) from trying to save my sister's Powerbook G4 hard drive... and it's possible that invisible files were picked up when I Carbon Copy Cloned that install disk back to my Raid Array boot drive. ???
I tried excluding the usr/bin folder, and got the same error... with other usr folders showing in console error -34... so I excluded the usr folder, and so far I am 160gb through a 1.2tb backup with no issues. I'll let you know.
I also did a disk util repair permissions on my boot raid, and got a host of issue including some unrepairable things.... I will reboot on a different disk and do a repair disk... but here's what it said-

  • Early 2008 Mac Pro-What type of HD?  Smart failing?

I have an early 2008 Mac Pro and have two hard drives in it.  The main system drive is a 2TB Western Digital drive I installed about a year ago.  The 2nd drive is a 1TB Seagate drive which is the original drive that came with the Mac Pro.
When looking at Disk Utility a few days ago I realized the drive is showing up in Red and it's saying that SMART is failing.  I've never had this happen before and like having a warning.
    First Question:
When SMART shows up as failing can it be a false alarm or is it likely a definite sign of impending hard drive failure?  When this happens, does the drive frequently fail quickly or does it take awhile?  The fortunate thing is I back this drive up frequently to Time Machine.
    Second Question:
What SATA speed does the Mac Pro handle?  I see many hard drives that are 3.0GB/s and some that are 6.0GB/s. Does the Mac Pro handle the faster 6.0GB/s?  If not, would they still work but just not at the additional speed?
I may consider upgrading to a 1.5TB or 2TB but figured I'll go with a Western Digital or Seagate drive.  I see cache ranging from 16MB to 64MB and speeds at 5400RPM and 7200RPM.  Between these two which is more important, large cache size or RPM's?
    Thank you for your help.

Run WD Lifeguard (*Windows program or their ISO you burn to CD) is best and almost only reliable way.
If a drive has started to use spare blocks it is gone.
IT DOES NOT MATTER. Any 3.5" SATA drive is a drive is all SATA and mostly about features and specs. So just buy the newest size you need. 64MB cache and 7.2K (Green can have trouble on Macs and are more for backup and storing movies etc).
I recommend WD 10K VR newest 250GB 200MB/sec for system $152, and WD Black or Hitachi.
    http://www.macperformanceguide.com likes 2-3-4TB.
Questions like this get asked unfortunately.

For every drive, you want to have multiple backup sets (clone and Tm) because drives and backups do fail and you want an alternate boot drive and to restore when needed.

Hi everyone. I both a Mac Pro 15" in March 2009. Five month ago I  was forced to buy by one new hard drive and extent the memory, because I had to make the upgrade (and pay) to install the new Lion operation system. Four days ago the Mother-board fails. To change it will cost a fortune. What should I do or expect from Apple to solve this problem? I am very disappointed because my trust on Apple was destroyed.

I am not sure why you are upset with Apple. Electronics equipment does fail. If the product is out of warranty or you do not have AppleCare there's not much you can do with Apple. Apple will charge you for the repair. Suggest you look for a third party repair store since they are usually less expensive than Apple. Alternatively you can buy one for about $850US and install it yourself. Sorry, but there aren't many choices in this situation.

  • My Mac Pro Desktop Shows no Sign of Life, Is it dead?

I have a 2009 Mac Pro Desktop 12 core 96 gig ram. It's a refurbished Mac. Anyways one night while on a website doing my homework the Mac froze up and I couldn't do anything, so I shut it down by holding the power button.
Next morning when I tried to turn it on it won't start up. Here are is what it is doing or not doing.
    when I turn it on:
fan starts up and I can hear it but nothing happens
    no chimes
any usb devices that are plugged into it won't get any electrical signal, mouse, keyboard, even iphone.
I've tried unplugging the power cord and plugging it back in after 1 minute and booting up again but same problem happens.
I am thinking it could be a failed logic board at this point, can anyone confirm?
I am a newbie at this and is my first time posting, so sorry if I left out any important information, I'd be happy to share any additional information if needed.

fan starts up and I can hear it but nothing happens
Is the power-On light flashing in a deliberate pattern?
If so, your Mac is working, but not enough RAM is working properly to start up.

  • 2009 Mac Pro upgrade to Yosemite failed

    Hi,
Seven days in and my 2009 Mac Pro is still dead.  Very frustrated.  It had a 4x3TB AppleRAID array in RAID1+0 giving 6TB.  I initially did an upgrade to Yosemite and it got stuck at the half-way point after the restart.  Yes, I did patiently wait ... but gave up after 12 hours (left it overnight).  I assume the upgrade was supposed to finish sooner than that?
Found one stripe in the RAID array was 'degraded' - replaced that disk (seems they had 11000 hours on them) but it was impossible (for me) to see how to get the new disk back into the RAID scheme under Disk Utility (booted up using an upgraded MacBook).  Once all the disks were removed from the array, Disk Utility gave no option to create a new RAID scheme, so I downloaded SoftRAID - yay, my RAID array was back (seems Apple gave up on their software RAID in 2009?).
However, still no joy.  Created a Yosemite install USB drive - seems to run but then fails at the end ... "couldn't bless installation disk: /Volumes/Image Volume".
Okay, so downloaded the Mavericks installer and created an install USB drive - same as Yosemite ... can't bless the installation disk.
What else can I try?  The Yosemite upgrade seems to have well and truly screwed my poor Mac Pro.  I'd already successfully upgraded two of our four Macs successfully to Yosemite (one upgrade and one clean install) so thought it was okay.
I might try booting off one of the Macs again, with the Mac Pro in target disk mode, and try to run the installer to install Mavericks or Yosemite onto the Mac Pro's RAID array as an external disk ...
    Otherwise ... ?

Booted the Mac Pro from the MacBook Air running Yosemite in target disk mode.  Ran the Yosemite installer on the MBA to install on the Mac Pro's SoftRAID array "Hollie" - when the installer tells me it's going to restart I see the final logs written at 04:50 below:

  • Mac Pro - Boot Fail/Migration

    Hello,
I've just purchased a brand new quad core mac pro to replace my old G5. On start-up I used migration to transfer my old hard drive to the new one, which has Lion on it. But now I can not get the new hard drive to boot. I turn on the Mac and the apple start up screen appears and then it goes to black, the hard drive and fans sound like they're working but only output is black.
The Mac can boot from my older hard drive and will boot in safe mode on the new one. I disabled the startup items and repaired the disk permissions but still nothing.
Not sure if this has anything to do with the issue but when booting from the old hard drive the computer will not sleep or restart.
    Any ideas?
    Many thanks in advance...

    Reinstalling Lion
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alterhatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

You need to first install the OS your Mac came on the bundled gray disks. Assuming it's Snow Leopard, you could then login into the App Store using your same Apple ID and password to download and install Lion.
If your Mac is a bit older and came with Leopard, 10.5.x, you can bypass that and install Snow Leopard from your retail disk. The only software you'd need to install separately from the gray disks would be the optional software, such as the iLife suite and other titles not included on the retail SL disk.

Step one, boot the new MBA into recovery mode (CMD+R on startup), launch Disk Utility, wipe the HD, and restore the OS. On reboot, use the Setup Assistant to do the migration. Details in Pondini's Setup New Mac guide.
