Sign-In says "Skype can't connect" (Windows7)

Thanks! This was a great help!!

I have been purchasing Skype Subscriptions consistently since 2006. I have Skype on my Windows7 laptop. According to the Updates page, I have the most recent version of Skype. My Windows7 system is all up to date, with all the most recent updates. There are NO viruses, malware, etc, etc. I use Microsoft Security Essentials - with Windows Firewall.(The Firewall is set to "Allow Skype") My Skype has been working fine until today. When I Load Skype, it naturally goes to the "Sign In" page. I enter the CORRECT name and password, and then it says: "Skype can't connect". I followed the link "Can't access your account?". Needless to say, that was of no help. Obviously, I CAN Sign In to the Skype webpage - otherwise you would not be reading this. PS - I've already tried Skype's so called "Support" pages - which are (and always have been) incompetent - to put it nicely. I've also read numerous Articles from the "Community", but haven't found any "recent" Topics that seem to be the same as my current "problem".

Skype 5 has been retired? What a shame! ....I'll never understand big companies and their questionable choices.... Oh well, I guess I'll use Skype 6 then, it's extremely ugly but at least it's pretty similar to Skype 5 in terms of layout...

  • Skype for windows 7 issue ''skype can't connect''

i got a new pc and i couldnt get skype to work because i enter my information and it says ''skype can't connect''. i reinstalled skype, i restarted my internet, it worked on my other pc that was vista and i adjusted the capability. i dont know if it has to do with the update or my pc but can someone help me?

So simple as that my friends.
I encounted the same problem. In fact, what you have to do is to uninstall McAfee antivirus which simply blocks the access.
I've got the Microsoft Security Essentials and i'm more than happy with it.
Hope this is useful to you

  • TS3623 If the screen says Unable to Sign in-Apple TV can't connect to the server at this time. please try later.  I've been getting this reading for about a week

My screen has been reading for about a week: Unable to Sign In, Apple TV can't connect to the server at this time.  Please try later.  What do I do to get pass this screen.  I purchased a movie series season from HBO and I can't watch it because I can't pass this screen.

    Hi Kailik Hunter,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  This article has some steps you can try if you're unable to sign in to your Apple TV and continue with setup:
    Apple TV: Basic troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1551
If you are still having trouble, you can try to reset your equipment by unplugging Apple TV, your television, your wireless networking equipment or AirPort Base Station, and your router from their power outlet. Wait 30 seconds, then plug everything back in.

  • A more persistant "Skype can't connect" problem

I’m a Skype user from Xinjiang, China. Despite the blocking of many foreign websites including Skype.com, I had had no trouble logging into Skype inside the Government Firewall until my Windows 7 crashed a few days ago. After I reinstalled everything (Windows 7 Home Basic x64, BitComet, and some other necessary apps I had before the crash), I lost connection to all the versions of Skype I could think of: v 6.16, v 6.18, v 7.1, v 7.4, Business Portable v7.1. I followed every suggestion I found both inside and on the other side of the GFW, but with no luck. I set the LAN settings to “automatically detect”, added some rules in my router and Windows Firewall, disabled Kaspersky Security 2014, and assigned Skype a new port. I even went so far as to install a completely clean and neat Windows 8.1. After all these attempts I get the same message “Skype can’t connect” every time I log in. When I try to connect it with my Microsoft account, it says “Sorry, something went wrong. Please try again.” It doesn’t work on another computer or on my Android phone in the same home-based network (access to the fibers through a TP-Link router). I know it’s my problem because in my area there are other people whose Skype works fine. I just can’t figure out what the problem. What can I do now?

Ahhhh. Now how on earth would I guess this?
I accidentally discovered after updating my Skype version 3 times, including acknowledging the "This version will replace the older version in your computer," it did not update at all! When I finally thought to check the version after opening what I thought was the updated version, it still had the old version numbers... I had to drag the Skype Application Icon to the trash and "empty trash" to delete the old version completely. Then, when I downloaded the same app for the fourth time, it worked just fine and I was able to sign in on the first try. Clearly skype should let people know this, but apparently they do NOT! Hope this helps some of you with similar problems.

  • Skype can't connect - most likely router problem, ...

Lately I can't connect to Skype at home. I've tried a lot of different solutions but none of them work.
The problem started a few months ago when I just couldn't sign into Skype (can't connect). At that time I had no change in any network settings on my computer nor my router. Interestingly enough, I could connect to Skype on Ubuntu (I have dualboot). Though even Ubuntu eventually failed to connect back then (just can't sign in) - still no changes in my network. I couldn't be bothered at the time with the problem so I just didn't use Skype.
However after some time (some weeks or a month or two), when I tried to connect to Skype again, it worked (on Win 7 as well as Ubuntu). Again, no changes to my network have been done in the mean time (Skype might of been updated, but I doubt it was on both platforms at the same time).
So Skype worked for a while until about a month ago, when the problem reoccurred. This time I said I'm going to get to the bottom of this so here is the situation:
I can connect to Skype at work no problem (on my desktop as well as my Android phone)
I can't connect to Skype at home (just won't sign in) on my desktop nor my phone
    I have tried:
Reinstalling Skype with cleaning everything that Skype might have left behind
Installing an (a bit) older version 6.9 (because even the latest 6.11 didn't work). Though these two attempts I've come to see are in vain once I figured out that I can't connect to Skype on my phone as well.
Resetted my router a couple of times.
Reset my router settings to default.
Opened/forwarded Skype ports to my (local) IP. I even enabled DMZ to redirected all traffic to my desktop computer (although I'm not 100% sure that that worked as I imagine it should work).
Tried some proxy settings in Skype (Connection options) I found on your forum.
None of the above worked in any way...
My router is a TP-Link TL-WR1043ND with (I think the latest) firmware version 3.13.13 Build 130428 Rel.58290n (hardware is v1).
    TLDR:
I can't sign in to Skype at home. It works when I'm at work. I can connect to Skype on my phone if I'm at work (over WiFi) or if I'm on 3G, but not if I'm on my home WiFi. That said, no software firewall can be the problem here, but my router. However I have no more ideas as to what else I can try. This forum is my last hope for finding a solution.
    Please help.

I do not know the makeup of Skype's internal security policies when it comes to this as they are not too open about this. Most companies are not. These are the only reasons I believe a block would occur based off any company's security policy.
    1. A proactive measure - A blacklist of IPs is constantly obtained/updated to include anonymizer services that might harm the network.
    2. An active/counteractive measure -
    I. Someone uses an anonymizer to SPAM people on the Skype network:
    a. Users complain using the abuse option. Users get the IP Auto-banned.
    b. The company (Skype) receives the complaints or notices a trend and Manual/Auto bans the IP.
II. Too many people (connections) sign on with the same IP (due to an exit relay/proxy). Due to this being very suspicious, (maybe even DDos-like behavior) the IP is Auto-banned.
I tend to lean more towards the counteractive measure since I don't believe many proactive measures are needed to limit abuse. There is always at least one rotten apple that engages in illegal activity using anonymizers, proxies, etc. that ruin it for everybody. In reality I believe it is a combination/balance of the two. Not to be prejudice against anonymizers, just blacklists to protect the network from known attacks. For whatever reason once the threshold is met, the IP is banned.  If I had to guess how long it would be in intervals of 30 days (30, 60, 90, 120, etc.). The whole Internet is not going to banned so the security policies in effect can't be too strict. It's goal is probably just to limit the majority of bad behavior that causes problems for their customers.
Skype is not the only service that reacts this way. Even ISPs will receive notices and in turn will send notices to their customer that since illegal activity (RIAA notices, etc.) is occurring due to a Tor exit relay or some other anonymizer, the ISP will terminate services with that customer if they don't cease (due to breach of contract).
I don't know whether you can limit an exit relay so it can't be used to access Skype. It may be a lost cause. If I made the choice to run a similar service it would be with a whitelist of people I knew who wouldn't use it to perform illegal activity, just remain anonymous when online.
You shouldn't have any issues running a non exit relay since in doing so your IP is not being broadcast all over the Internet like a calling card which an exit relay does. Changing your modem's MAC address is something you need to call your ISP for. However changing your router's MAC address generally does not require that. All that is required is a reboot of the modem, router, and possibly computer if you run into issues. You will probably continue to run into the same problem as long as you attempt to run an exit relay.
Be aware that for every IP that get's banned on your ISP is another IP a person could get issued for 24 hours to a week + after it gets released. Some people then visit this community and complain how they can't connect when it worked not too long ago and how Skype "sucks". So sometimes things like this create a ripple effect for other customers.

  • Skype can't connect on my laptop

When I try to log into Skype on my laptop, I get the message "Skype can't connect".
I have reset my password, I have made sure I have the latest version istalled, I have made sure my firewall isn't blocking it, and I have checked that the problem is not because of a slow internet connection.
I can connect without any problem using my phone, can anyone help me figure out why I can't connect using my laptop? It used to connect automatically without any problem.
    Thank you in advance.

Try to reset all Skype settings.
Quit Skype or use Windows Task Manager to kill any Skype.exe process. Go to Windows Start and in the Search/Run box type %appdata% and then press Enter or click the OK button. The Windows File Explorer will pop up. There locate a folder named “Skype”. Rename this folder to something different, e.g. Skype_old.
Next go to Windows Start and in the Search/Run box type %temp%\skype and then press Enter or click the OK button. Delete the DbTemp folder.
    Restart Skype.
N.B. If needed, you will still be able to re-establish your call and chat history. All data is still saved in the Skype_old folder.

  • Skype can't connect error

    Hi Skype Support!
I've had Skype installed since ever (current version 6.14.60.104), I've been using it daily without any serious problems. All of a sudden I now keep getting the "Skype can't connect" message. I've been trying it all morning and it just will not work.
I've tried this on my PC and my Mac and I've gotten the same message on both. I even tried entering the wrong password just to see if it would return any other message, still takes a while to try and connect and then returns "Skype can't connect".
UPNP is enabled, I haven't touched my router since skype was working last time, I've restarted everything. I ended up calling my ISP to see if there was a problem on their end, just to make sure, and he replied that he had gotten people asking about the same thing and saying that skype wasn't not working on their PC but worked on their mobile. So that prompted me to try it on my Android and sure enough, it worked there, on the WiFi, but not on my desktop pc or my laptop mac.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

    Thanks for the link!
Sadly, that didn't do the trick, it still can't connect. Which is weird, because it works on my laptop but not my PC. I would think of my PC being the problem if it was only happening on it, but the fact that my Mac doesn't work either is a strange addition to the mix
I'm literally lost in this issue, but atleast it works on my laptop now!
