Sign of Pending Doom?

I know I'm asking for opinions rather than answers, but I would appreciate any feedback. My trusty iPad2 WIFI 32GB has served me well. It worked great as recently as last nite with no issues. When I went to use it this morning, I got absolutely nothing from either the home button or the sleep button. I plugged in the AC charger and let it charge for about 3 hours - still nothing. I finally "reset" it by pressing both buttons, which fired it up. The battery was almost drained, which suggested it did not accept a charge during the previous 3 hours. After the reset, it charged fine and has now been working properly for the past hour or so. This is the first time I have ever had to go thru the reset process.
My question - do I consider this an anomaly and not worry about it, or should I consider this a sign of pending doom? The iPad2 does everything I want or need, so upgrading doesn't thrill me. At the same time, I use it when traveling to access email and Internet, so it is important to me. Any opinions? Thanks very much.

The description you give pretty much describes what happens when the battery has completely drained. After connecting to the wall charger it may take up to 30 minutes before there is any response and the best thing to do after that 30 minutes is a reset of the iPad. To reset the iPadpress and hold both the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button continuously until the Apple logo appears. Then release the button and let the device restart. You will not lose data doing this. It's like a computer reboot.
I would let the iPad continue to charge until it is at 100%. Make sure you backup all data and photos regularly in case something more serious does happen. But, as others have suggested, this might be a one time event.

  • Is this the start of a pending doom?

Wow... This is not looking pretty. I'm fuming of the irritation, the loss of productivity, the constant troubleshooting of my devices since iCloud was unveiled and so far no relief and no sign of things getting better!!!!! Can someone explain to me what is iCloud? So, WHY DOES IT NOT WORK????
    < Edited By Host >

I am getting the weird p99 rejected password error in mail at the moment, which i got when the service was first launched so i went over to icloud in safari and went to log in as normal and its giving me this.
iCloud is doing ok so far i just wished they would give the correct error messages, for example in mail its saying the password is incorrect so it sends the user in the wrong direction to the point where they can do serious damage to there data thinking they are doing something wrong, mail should just display a message from iCloud saying sorry were having a server problem at the moment please give us x amount of time its not your fault or something, Yeah the customer will still be angry but you make it worse when your error messages say the customer is in the wrong.
Actually just now my whole iCloud system preferences menu has gone offline saying incorrect password and now ical is report a problem with the connection as well.

  • Recently OSX takes longer to Shut Down is this a sign of impending failure?

Just in the last week or so OSX 10.5.1 is taking a longer time to Shut Down.
When I first got OSX Leopard the desktop icons would first disappear and then the whole thing would Shut Down about 4 or 5 seconds later.
Now, all the desktop icons disappear as soon as I hit Shut Down but the purple screen behind them is left lingering for a good 30 seconds before it finally closes and the little spinning wheel keeps rotating so something seems to be causing it to hang in the Shut Down mode.
Is this a sign of impending doom?
I only installed it about 3 months ago, and up until this started, it's been fine.
    No other problems are apparent.

Does it make any difference if you manually quit all applications first?
I'm not sure if this would show you anything useful, but you might launch the Console utility and look for messages from the time of the shutdown process.

  • Is a needed PMU reset a sign of impending failure??

My computer wouldn't start this morning (definitely not a battery issue - tried two fully charged batteries). A PMU reset worked. I haven't had to do a PMU reset before, but I'm wondering if this is a sign of impending failure. What should I be looking out for?

    Hi,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
Having to reset the PMU isn't a sign of impending doom. It merely means that the PMU became corrupted (just like an application's .plist can) and needed to be replaced.

  • Weird happenings with list view in OS 10.3.9--one folder only.

    Hello,
OK, this one strikes me as odd. In one of my folders on the Desktop, when I click list view, it doesn't behave normally. Instead of the regular list view, with the clickable headings on top (Name, Kind, Size, Date created, etc.), only the subfolders show up and on the top is just some nonclickable random stuff, sometimes left over if I've switched over from Column view. I think the best way to "explain" would be to show some screenshots, so I hope I can link these correctly:
In column view, which is normal:
    http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v284/movingsale/screenshots/?action=view&curre nt=nyufolder_columnview.jpg >
In list view after column view:
    http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v284/movingsale/screenshots/?action=view&curre nt=nyufolder_listview.jpg
In list view from a closed folder:
    http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v284/movingsale/screenshots/?action=view&curre nt=nyufolder_listview2.jpg
I'm sorry I put these as links--I don't know how to put the actual pics in my post. Some more information:
This only started happening within the last 2 weeks or so, but it happens every time I open this folder off the desktop. As far as I've seen, it doesn't happen on any other folders. I have an external drive that I use for a bootable clone, and it happens on the cloned version of the folder, too. It even happens on an old cloned version of the folder, which I think is from before this started happening.
I guess my question is, what would cause this, and is it a sign of impending doom, or should I not worry about it?
    Thanks in advance!
    Anna

    Hi Anna,
I suspect the viewing information for this folder is bad. It is unlikely that there is anything more wrong. I think you can fix it by:
    1. make a new folder with a slightly different name than the bad one.
    2. In some view other than list, move all the contents of the bad folder to the new one.
    3. Trash the bad folder.
    4. Rename the new folder to the name of the one you treashed.
    Does this fix the problem?

  • Endless Cascading Windows on the Desktop

My almost six-year-old iBook may be showing the first signs of dementia. Yesterday I started her up and saw a half-dozen windows cascading on the desktop--they were all open to the "my home" screen. I closed each of the six windows, only to find six more underneath; I closed those to find--you guessed it--more underneath. I restarted the computer and found the series of windows again.
Except for this oddity, everything else seems to be working fine. I can open everything else on the desktop, I can open all my apps and docs. Is this some sort of bug that can be easily addressed, or is this a sign of impending doom?
    iBook   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi Hillory
Could be dementia, would you like me to open a window? No. OK but do you want to open a window? No, its alright.
Hillory, what is "my home", an application that you are using? It seems to be running automatically.
    10.3.9 has no widgets.
Are you running Yahoo "pseudo" widgets?
What is in Account > Start Up items ? Something to do with the app' "My Home"
Deselect any application in there that you are not familiar with or haven't intended to be there.
    Then Restart.
    Plus:
    Aspirin medication:
Run Repair Permissions in the application Disk Utility, which is found in Applications/Utilities.
Still demented? If so post back.

  • Monitor Flashes on Startup

    Hi,
I've got a Dual 2.7Ghz G5 with a Radeon 9650 video card in it. Recently it's been doing something odd on startup. When the computer first starts (or if the monitor's been off for a while) the screen flashes between dark and normal. It does this faster and faster, and then stops and the screen becomes perfectly normal. I'm hoping this isn't the sign of impending doom for wither the monitor or the video card. Any ideas as to what may be causing it?
I have a 19" LG LCD Flatron Slim monitor.

Am back from the store and have substituted the VGA cable and adaptor to simply a DVI cable. There's good news and there's bad news.
Good news: the display is much clearer.
Bad news: same flashing problem occurs at startup.
This time, like every time I've had to attach new components and ever since the first time I got this mini, getting it to power up from the start button can be hit and miss. This time, it took about two minutes of fiddling with the power cord at all three points - from back of mini to where it three-pronged plug goes into the power bar - before it finally lit up.
There's nothing wrong with the power bar as far as I can tell; nothing else connected to it is going kablooey.

  • How do I remove ken burns effect?!?!

    Hi,
    I have iLife 6.0.3 and I'm experiencing 2 problems.
    1. iMove keeps on crashing on me, it seems like I have to close my eyes and pray that it doesn't crash before I get to save my project, which is most often than not.
    2. Probably the most frustrating, is the Kens Burns Effect. I can not REMOVE, DELETE, GET RID OF IT! (I don't know any other way to put it) I just want it out of my original clip! I did everything the iMove Help suggested I do.
But there's no "Apply" it's "Update" and it did not work, and I did delete the transitions before and after the clip.
With the older version of iMovie this was not a problem!
    Please please please help!!!
    PowerBook5,6   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Aha. That sounds like a different problem. There's a bug in iMovie 6 that affects the Updating of clips of images we imported with the Ken Burns checkbox ON.
Normally when we import an image iMovie keeps a copy of the image inside the project. It's retained so we can update the clip later.
Trouble is, when we empty the iMovie Trash iMovie inappropriately discards its copy of the image. Later, because the source image is not available, the Update button fails to update the clip selected on the Timeline.
The first sign of pending failure is that the Preview screen is black instead of showing the image. A moment later, when we press the Update button, nothing changes in the Timeline clip. iMovie fails to Update the clip, but with no error message.
There's no good workaround. One solution is to never empty the iMovie Trash. Then iMovie won't discard the image. (We can still select large clips in the iMovie Trash window and discard them individually.)
Another is to use the Finder to lock the image file inside the project so iMovie can't discard it. That's pretty inconvenient, however. (When I REALLY want to empty the iMovie Trash I use an AppleScript to lock all the images in the Media folder of the project before emptying the iMovie trash. More convenient. Most of the time, however, I just individually discard large items in the iMovie Trash.)
Does that sound like what you see?

  • USB Jump Drive - filesystem errors?

Running Snow Leopard, I have a 2GB jump drive formatted to FAT16 (so I can use it on PCs as well)
I got the following after doing a quick check from Disk utility:
    Verify and Repair volume “JUSTIN_2GB”
    ** /dev/disk1s1
    ** Phase 1 - Preparing FAT
    ** Phase 2 - Checking Directories
Invalid long filename entry for /Login Logos
    Remove? yes
** Phase 3 - Checking for Orphan Clusters
    426 files, 154080 KiB free (4815 clusters)
***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *****
Volume repair complete.Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.
So...  Is this a sign of impending doom?  It is not one of those fake/counterfit brand name drives off eBay, I bought it from NewEgg.

That is called a kernel panic. I would not plug that jump drive into your Mac anymore. It has bad Ju-Ju!
Most USB pocket drives are formatted for a PC. Obviously there is something about this one that is incompatible with your Mac kit.

  • Restart G4 Message

Am I the only I with this message? The first time it appeared was after the "Restart" following the upgrade to a new "n" AirPort Extreme Base. During the restart, the screen darkened (the desktop was visible but dark, and there was the direction to restart the computer by holding down the power button. This message was in 4 languages and was in a black rectangle superimposed over a large image of the power button. Sometimes I have to restart it up to 5 times, sometimes only once and on occasion appears while the computer has been on for several days. Is this the sign of impending doom?

It is not a sign of impending doom; it's a sign that something in the mix is not working as it should.
Each time it happens, you may want to do hard drive maintenance to ensure that it isn't a hard drive problem that is part of the trouble. (Start up in Safe Mode or start up from the Mac OS X Install disc and repair the hard drive from it.) Once you've repaired the hard drive with a Safe Boot or from the Install disc, start up normally and go to Applications > Utility > Disk Utility, and repair permissions on the hard drive.

  • Deposit Class issue in CC&B

Hey!! Found that there are some Accounts with Service Agreements in different Deposit Classes on the same account. I know this causes issues when the deposit is being applied to the account - those SA's that are not in the same deposit class will not get any monies applied and they remain in a Pending Stop status. If I change the Deposit Class on these specific SA Types - what type of Pending Doom could I be unleashing? I mean, I can run batch to make sure everything processes, but am I really catching the possible errors that could ocurr down the road?
Any help would be greatly appreciated....

You could certainly change the Deposit Class on those SA Types without any risk of doom within CC&B - when the Deposit is applied, then they will also be included. But, do you know why the Deposit Class is different for these SA Types? For example, if a customer has paid a deposit for a residential electric service, but has other SAs for a gas service or for merchandise, the electric deposit probably should not be automatically applied to these ones. There could even be separate deposits for other services, so it really depends upon the business rules that were used to decide upon the Deposit Classes.

  • Verify Disk Log shows problems

    OK Rookie here (again!) -
    Stupid question(s) No.4:
I've partitioned my new external and successfully made a bootable clone of the complete HD (which I've tested and it seems to work fine).
I've deleted the "manually added" Folder within my Users folder and added all files that were not of an older date (only two) to my actual Admin Account Folder.
Then I ran "Repair Disk Permissions" and "Verify Disk" from Apple DU and got the following:
    (Red comments in bold)
    +Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”+
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.

    *Volume Header needs minor repair*
*The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.*
*Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit*
    1 HFS volume checked
    *Volume needs repair*
There was also a strange box in the top RH corner of the window that said "LOG" underneath, it had some yellow writing on a black BG that seemed to say "WARNING" on the first line and a number on the second which I could not read.
I clicked it and it seems to only be a copy of the dialogue above but I've added it here in case it's important:
The privileges have been verified or repaired on the selected volume
    Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.

Disk Utility stopped verifying “Macintosh HD” because the following error was encountered:
The underlying task reported failure on exit

    ==============================
    How should I proceed?
I still have the original untouched clone of my HD on the external, are any of the comments attributable to the moving and deleting of files and folders that I have done since or is it all more worrying and a problem with my Mac?
I'll do nothing before I hear from someone - any help greatly appreciated.
    Regards - Deano
PS: I've opened all files and games from my reconfigured HD since moving everything around with no problem at all

    Hi Deano-
Glad to hear things worked out.
The report looks good, and S.M.A.R.T. status reporting as verified is always good. Loss of S.M.A.R.T. status is often times a sign of impending doom, except in the case of external firewire drives. These aren't S.M.A.R.T. supported. S.M.A.R.T. reporting as verified, though, is not a panacea, just one of several tools to gauge a drives health. More info on S.M.A.R.T.
As for the update of the clone... My thoughts are, that since both are currently working, for the time being, leave them both as is. When it comes time to backup- daily, every two days, weekly, what ever your workload demands, by then you will know, +for sure+ that the main drive is as healthy as now appears. So, when it's time to backup, do it then. Either Erase and Copy, or, Smart update will be fine.
Oh, and the CS2 files are for Vietnamese language support in CS2. So, unless you need Vietnamese, the absence of the files will cause no harm.
You're getting through your learning curve just fine, and gaining valuable experience. Always remember to verify/repair a hard drive from a seperate volume or install disk. Permissions don't require such. Now that you have the room and the tools, keep that valuable data backed up!
Post anytime you need help, or reinforcement. That's what the forums are for. I enjoy helping, as I can, and appreciate the show of appreciation with the stars! You're welcome!

  • Fan noise with PB12inch?

My PB's fan seems to come on and stay on all the time now.
I've looked at the activity monitor to try and see what's making it do that but I'm not really sure what to look for. I've tried shutting off apps in the background, but the only thing that helps is letting it sleep for a few minutes and then it seems to quiet down.
Any suggestions or similar experiences? It gets louder than I ever remember it getting in the last 2 years - is that a sign of impending doom?

I occasionally have this same problem. I'll sometimes find the screen asleep and the fan still roaring. Here's what worked for me.
Open Activity Monitor (Applications/Utilities) and click on CPU below the window showing the processes running. In my case, the graph on the lower right showed the CPU maxed out by the user (green) with minor activity by the system (red). In the process window above, click on the column heading %CPU until the processes are listed by the percentage of CPU they are demanding. In my case, the faxjobmgr was demanding 85% of the CPU. I have no idea why. I've only used the fax feature half a dozen times on this machine and certainly not within the last few weeks. The machine has been restarted numerous times since I last sent a fax. Anyway, this seemed to be the likely suspect. I double clicked on the faxjobmgr line and a dialog box came up with a bunch of statistics and a "quit" button at the bottom. I clicked quit and the fan immediately began running slower and within a few minutes had stopped altogether. The graph in the lower right showed minimal activity.
Now, in the time it has taken me to write this post, the fan has come back on at about half-speed and the Activity Monitor itself is the single largest demand on CPU. I'm going to run a real-time experiment here and use the above described process to see if quitting the Activity Manager affects the fan speed. Here goes....
Bingo! within 45 seconds of quitting, the fan stopped. Go ahead and try this at home.
