Signal being overpowered by neighbours!!

Hi, I come here frustrated and desperate for answers.
My girlfriend and I both run iPowerbooks (OSX10.4.1) with Airport express.
We have been living in current apartment for over two years. For the last..? 8-9 months we have had a few new neighbours within complex that give off wireless signals that at times are so strong our pages take forever to load or sometimes drops out.
Most times of the day/night it works well. Though periodically we just get "overpowered" by 1 or 2 particular neighbour's signals.
(It is not my ISP).
I have:
-reset both Powerbooks. (they are not faulty)
-Hard Reset on Express
-Switched channels
-spoken to local Apple dealer (no help what so ever...)
-I have painstakingly read through these forums.
I am yet to find someone with my specific problem.
The Apple dealer said I might need a new Express. I find this doubtful as when it works - it work well.
I do not want to go buy another product for several hundreds dollars at this point when the one I have SHOULD be enough.
Can someone help?

I agree. It seems the 2.4GHz band in your area is horribly over-saturated. I'm guessing that one or more of your neighbors has boosted his signal overmuch and is bleeding over to the other channels. The only surefire fix for this is to goto the 5GHz network. Unfortunately, only the AP Extreme does this at this point. The Express is still stuck on 2.4GHz, and hasn't been updated yet.
I'm guessing you've tried the AEX in another location and it works fine? By "another location," I mean, far away from your apartment, like a friend's house. Doing that would narrow down the problem. If it IS your neighbors, then I would think getting an antenna would make the AEX even more sensitive to interference. Maybe, if you could narrow down which neighbor is affecting your signal, you could block his signal a bit, either by some sort of shielding or by a directional antenna? I'm just throwing things out there, but I'm afraid the only real solution I can come up with is to switch bands. Of course, all your computers would have to be 5GHz-capable, which probably isn't the case...

  • [HELP] No satellite signal being received - No issue with box or satellite?

Hi there, I have the error of no satellite signal being received however on my first Sky+ HD box I was getting this error so I switched back to our older Sky+ box and this worked fine. However on a new Sky+ HD box it is still giving me this error, despite being on a HD connection,. Any help on this matter would be highly appreciated, I've followed all the steps to try resolve the no satellite issue.  Thanks.

It might be local interference.  You'll have to switch off any wireless equipment in the room,  and especially a wireless router,  cordless phone base station and anything else that radiates signals. You should also unbundle ( if applicable ) your dish Input cables from anything else behind the box, in particular power leads. If you're using the white,  pre-moulded cables from the likes of Homebase,  B&Q etc,  it might be an idea to replace them with good quality,  double-screened cabling such as WF100 which you can buy online. Are you able to borrow someone else's HD box to test in your flat,  or are you able to check out your own box on a non-communal setup?

  • No signal being sent from the base stn.

    Good day all...
Just got the Airport Extreme and hooked it up to my imac & it worked great. But once I wanted to name the network & try to secure it, the base station shut down. Infact, the lights still indicate network traffic into the unit but i am getting no signal at all on my comp. I have set this up before at work & no problem. I have tried to reset the base by pressing the reset button for 5sec but still no signal.
    Any suggestions???
    iMac G5 20"   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I assume you have an Airport Extreme Base Station with firmware 5.5.1 or later since you only held the reset for 5 seconds according to these instructions:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107451
If you were not up to that firmware then a 10 second reset is necessary. Are you connecting wirelessly to the iMac? Try connecting with an ethernet cable to configure it first.

  • Airport signal being blocked

I control a network of 50+ wired Mac and a handful of wireless users. My wireless users have two Airport Extremes that are located too far away for a WDS setup. One day a few weeks ago both bases stopped working. Both exhibited the same issue where the people logged into them were seeing their signal strength on their PowerBook's flash from full bars to nothing, somewhat just flickering on and off. I thought that it could be related to a big show that was located in the convention center that they are attached to. When I spoke to the networking company that runs the wiring and networks for the convention center I was told that they didn't do anything. The next day one of the Airports was back to behaving normal. The second one didn't get plugged back in until today, when it was it exhibited the same issues as before. When I pulled it out of it's location and took it down the hall to where the other base station was it worked fine. When it goes back to it's home it flickers, even on my known good PowerBook that just connected to it moments before.
My question, is someone intentionally blocking my base stations? How would they go about that? I believe the convention center's network guys did something accidentally, but it appears they may not be smart enough to undo it. I think they are flipping switches in the back and got lucky when they fixed the first one.

    Two suggestions:
    1. make sure both base stations are running firmware version 5.5.1 and not version 5.6. Check this with the Airport Admin Utility, and if necessary get version 5.5.1 from:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/airportextremefirmware551formacosx.html
    2. radiofrequency interference will easily cause the problem you have noted, and that interference can come from many sources including neighboring wireless networks and 2.4GHz portable phones. You can minimize this interference by experimenting with trying to find a clearer channel - try first either channel 1 or 11. If the Base Stations are in close proximity to each other, make sure they are assigned channels at least three channels apart. The channel setting selection is made under the Airport tab of the Airport Admin Utility.

  • WRT610N - No signal being broadcasted (apparently)

I have a new WRT 610N router which I have configured in
many ways (Initially with all the "defaults") Under none of the configs there seems to be a wireless signal. How do I know? I have a Linksys
USB  adaptor ( WUSB600N) installed on two different computers
(one XP and one Vista, which is sitting right next to the router)
as well as a TiVo USB adaptor on my
series 2 TiVo. All three machines report NO SIGNAL from the any network
from my router (they do report several wireless networks from many
of my neighbors so I know the adaptors are working). I have both 5.0 and 2.4 channels marked for SSID broadcast.
The broadband connection to the DSL seems to be working and my WIRED connection from one of my computers to the router. I have no problems
with using the Internet via the wired route.
By the way, could not connect to the Internet until I downloaded
Level 17 firmware, which I now have.  Do I have a 'lemon'?

I have a WRT310N that seems to have the same problem. I'm connecting WIRED through that router now to the internet. The little wireless symbol is lit up solid blue, but it's not broadcasting. It worked great last night; I was able to connect both my desktop and laptop using the wireless signal. This morning I wake up and no signal to be had.
I've already tried powering down both the DSL modem and the wireless router, I've upgraded the firmware, and I've reset factory defaults and then set up my wireless network again.
    SSID is set to Enabled
    I have WPA security on

  • New router WRT160N, but still same poor signal!!

    Hi all,
Been having issues with my wireless signal being poor and/or intermitent.  I won't pretend to be computer literate, but I asked a Techie friend about this, and he suggested that I but a new router with the "N" signal.
My desktop signal is fine, but i have 3 laptops, and can be 30 feet away and get a fair/poor signal.  When I go into the bedroom, which is upstairs, and in the furthest distance away from the router, the signal gets even weaker.
My Techie tried everything to bump up the signal, trying all channels, and even moved the router around the room.  No luck!!
My house isn't made of steel, so there is no logical explanation for this... is there?
Please  help me, and remember...I'm not real swarthy with the computer jargon,
    thanks very much

Try to change the Wireless Settings on your Router as mentioned below, i think it will improve the wireless signal strength on your computers.
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
    Click on the Wireless tab
    - Here select manual configuration...Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
    - Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbors network...
    - Set the Radio Band to Standard-20MHz and change the Standard channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
    For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WPA, For Encryption, select TKIP...For Passphrase input your desired WPA Key. For example , MySecretKey , This will serve as your network key whenever you connect to your wireless network. Do NOT give this key to anyone and remember the key.
NOTE : Passphrase should be more that 8 characters...
    Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75,Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304,Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 and Click on Save Settings...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...

  • No Signal to TV

I am having issues with no signal being sent from Mac Pro to a cheap little BrokSonic TV via VGA cable. I'm using the VGA to DVI adapter and plugging it in to the 3rd port on my ATI Radeon HD 5870 graphics card. It used to work, however, now the Mac Pro doesn't even see it in the monitor displays.  I've tried 3 different cables and two different adapters and nothing works. I've plugged the TV into my Macbook Pro and everything works fine.
    My specs are

    Mac OS X 10.6.8

      But mini-DVI?  The 5870 has a full-sized DVI port, not a mini-DVI port.
Nope, I believe that there are two mini-display-ports and a full-sized DVI port on the back of a ATI Radeon HD 5870 according to the Apple Store. What I meant was to get a DVI to VGA for £2.99 of eBay and see what you are doing wrong. This might show that one of your working monitors with Display Locations 1&2 on your 5870 does not work on Display Location 3 on the 5870 meaning you have a faulty connector or the entire 5870; hopefully not the latter.
If it the first, then it is fairly easy to replace the connector it is feasible. Even though there are quite a large amount of pins to solder; these parts are readily available. I have done this to one 5870 and two EVGA Nvidia GTX 460 SC cards after they were damaged due to a berk of a friend when he removed them from his gaming-PC.

  • Tracking a ramping signal and checking for range thresholds

I have a signal which ramps at 0.05 volts/second.  During this state, there is a possibility that the ramp rate
exceeds the 0.05 v/sec. operation (runaway condition).  Does anyone have any ideas about how to track this and
    respond to the runaway condition?

How is the signal being generated?  How are you sampling it?
You could just take the difference between two samples and if their rate is out of a certain range, take care of it.

  • PWM signal from Accelerometer by using DIO of PIC-MIO-16E-4

I am a new beginner to use digital signal acqusition. The accelrometer send the pulse width modualated signal and I need to use DIO line instead of counter. I wonder how I can measure the pulse width, + duty, and -duty.

    Hi Gino,
If you plan to use the digital inputs of the PCI-MIO-16E-4 then you will be limited to software timing since the digital inputs are asynchronous and dependent on software calls. This means your fastest rates are roughly 100-1000Hz (computer dependent). Since you also want to sample a period at least 5 to 10 times so that you can get a somewhat accurate representation of the duty cycle and the pulse width, you are further limited to the signal being slower than 10-200Hz.
However, if this is acceptable then you only need to create a loop and sample your digital inputs at the desired loop speed and perform calculations to determine the duty cycle.
How you would determine the pulse width and duty cycle is everytime you take a digital measureme
nt you also use "Count Ticks (ms).vi" in LabView to count the time between each call to this VI. You simply add these times while the reading is high and you have the high dutycycle. Do the same for low and then add the two together.
    Hope that helps.

  • How to extend network so both Airports offer signal radius same network...?

I have a largely wireless network. ADSLN XModem speaks directly to an AExp located by the telephone point about 4m from the AExt located on my desk, through two medium/light resistance walls. This arrangement should be giving good coverage to the areas adjacent to both Airports but, for some reason, the AExp is only speaking to the AExt and the signal being dished out to the computers seems to be only coming from the AExt, not the AExp, which means that coverage is poor. If I take the worst case scenario with a G3 iBook and 802.11b Airport card, I can walk away from the AExt and nearer the AExp and signal drops at about 4m from the AExtr (through a plaster + lath wall) and about 2m from the AExt through part plaster part timber wall. I assume I have configured the relationship of the two airports wrongly though I cannot off hand see how. Any ideas? Drew

I assume that you are using WDS to wireless connect the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) and AirPort Express (AX).
Ensure that the option "Allow wireless clients on this base station" is selected in the setup of the AEBS.

  • 3 way 1080p hdmi splitter no signal

hi all, just got a 3 way splitter and tried it .....no good , it works on the dvd and plays hdmi perfect but when i flick the switch for the btvision port to the output hdmi lead to the tv just get the no signal message . if i put hdmi lead direct into back of btvision + black box it works ok , its when the splitter is introduced that it fails. tried bt technical got a girl in indea or somewhere going on about a new box being issued in march to allexisting customers and to set my ratio to 720 ffs , i bought 1080p samsung led for that reason not to watch in 720 are the splitters not compatable or what with this box?? any ideas anyone?/

First thing would be to swap the devices you have connected in case it's a duff port on the splitter. HDMI isn't a straightforward connection, the sending device chats to the receiver to identify that it's a legitimate display and swap encryption keys. This handshake is called HDCP. The aim is to prevent the signal being intercepted and copied. If the switch isn't HDCP compatible then you may find some devices will refuse to talk to it.
As for 1080/720. If you have an HDCP problem, neither are going to work but I'd be surprised if you can tell much of a difference between an upscaled 720 and an upscaled 1080.

  • How to view signal in a waveform chart in Labview Signal Express?

    Hi,
I would like to view a signal in Signal Express 3.0  in a "waveform chart" but don't know how to do it and I am thinking that it may be impossible?
In Labview there are two ways of viewing data, either in a "waveform chart" or in a "waveform graph". The great thing with "waveform chart" is that it lets you define a history length and you can see the data move to the left (strip chart option) as the samples are being retrieved. It works perfect.
In Signal Express I can only select "XY graph" or "Waveform graph" by making a right-click the mouse but I cannot select "Waveform chart". Is it really true that it is not possible to view the data in a "waveform graph with Labview SE? (1 analog signal being read continuously, 100 samples to read at 1K rate)
    Thank you in advance,
    Enrique
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi Enrique,
You are correct that there is currently no waveform chart in SignalExpress. The closest thing you can get to, is recording the data as a log and then viewing it while recording (which I realize is not quite the same, interactive behavior).
For your last comment, you wrote "waveform graph", but I assume you meant to say "chart" there as well.
Sorry about this. We have recently been getting this request, so perhaps in a future version.

  • Is it possible to turn off the wireless signal on the Airport Extreme?

Is it possible to temporarily turn off the wireless signal being emitted from an Airport Extreme whilst still remaining connected to the internet via ethernet? If so, what do you need to do to turn off the wireless signal?
Also, how strong is the wireless signal? If placed in a basement of a residential property, is it likely that the signal would reach two floors above?
Thanks very much for your answers.

    Welcome to the discussions!
Is it possible to temporarily turn off the wireless signal being emitted from an Airport Extreme whilst still remaining connected to the internet via ethernet? If so, what do you need to do to turn off the wireless signal?
Open AirPort Utility - Click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab located just under the row of icons
    Wireless Mode = None
Update to save your new settings
You can reverse the process to turn the wireless back on when you are ready.
Also, how strong is the wireless signal? If placed in a basement of a residential property, is it likely that the signal would reach two floors above?
It's just not possible to accurately predict wireless performance in advance for any installation. A guess would be that the signal will be very weak, and likely unusable, but you won't know for sure until you try it out in your house.

  • Airport loses signal every few days

Hi there, I have an airport express which I love, but recently it keeps losing its signal. My ibook and both my mom and dad's ibooks will not detect our airport. I tried changing our channel so it doesn't interfere with our neighbor's networks, which usually works too, but basicallly every 2-3 days, our signal dies. I usually just unplug the airport, and plug it back in after 30 sec. and that works, but its getting annoying. Any thoughts? I'm really tired of our signal being interrupted.

This has started happening to me on a daily basis.
I would like some help/answers too.
    Hi Jeffrey Eddy!
So far during 2007 there have already been one major OS X update and several Security Updates that may have closed holes that might have existed in wireless operations/configurations, or may have made other changes. We don't know for sure, as most of that infomation is typically not made public.
To conform your system to these changes, you will want your base station's firmware to be up-to-date, and your OS X version to be up-to-date. It sounds as if your AirPort Express firmware might not be up-to-date. As anything older will lead to a problem of some sort, it should have the current version 6.3, linked HERE. You can check what your current version is by opening the utility "AirPort Admin Utility" and it will be listed below the Express photo, at the bottom right, as "Apple Base Station V."
Using the Network panel of System Preferences, it also wouldn't hurt to delete and block access to all other wireless networks other than your own that are listed on the AirPort/AirPort pane in the "By default, join:" selector which is located in the middle of the pane.
Rename and reconfigure your own network while you're at it. For that, use "Network Setup Assistant" which is opened at the bottom of the Network panel by using the "Assist me..." button followed by the blue "Assistant..." button. First name your network configuration - you're not naming the network, but the new configuration name that will be displayed on the Network panel's "Location:" selector. Continue on, and in response to "How Do You Connect to the Internet?" activate the radio button for "I use AirPort to connect to the Internet wirelessly." And continue on until you've completed setup of the new network configuration.
Before I switched my setting it woud just randomly
jump to a weaker network signal in the middle of
    work.
The default setting of your AirPort is: "If no recent networks are found: Ask before joining an open network." Therefore, your AirPort could only have jumped to another network signal if you had edited the default setting, or due to your willingness to trespass onto the wireless networks of others, which has the same effect. Using someone else's unencrypted network to make online purchases is a good way of becoming a victim of identity theft, if you like that sort of thing.
I always get the warning "connection to base station
not found" so I think it's either the Express itself
    or the Airport.
It's probably neither, but a faulty configuration on your part, or due to lack of current firmware in the Express.
I also have an Xbox360 logged into
Live constantly (direct wired through a gateway) and
I never have a service interuption.
This would have nothing to do with your wireless issues.
I have heard a rumor that air traffic can disrupt
wireless service. Is this true? I live about 5 mi.
    from Port Columbus.
No, not true. Since most of the population of the country, if not the world, is within 5 mi. of an airport or air traffic, how would all the wireless cell phones work?
Kindly refer to the Apple Support article: AirPort: Potential sources of interference
