Signal strength worse since iOS 6.1.2.

Ever since I upgraded to iOS 6.1.2, my LTE signal strength on my iPhone 5 has depleted. Where I used to get 4 bars I now get 1-2. Sometimes places I used to have LTE are 3G for some reason. It only started when I got iOS 6.1.2. Is this a software bug that will hopefully get fixed soon?
I have Verizon in case that matters.

Hi friend,
Try to reset your idevice, pressing and holding Home/Sleep buttons until restart your device.
If the issue persists, restore your network connections, in Settings>>General>>Reset.
Hope it helps

  • Worse signal strength/consistency since 1.1.1?

Trying to figure out if this is just me. What I am experiencing is:
    - My signal bars fluctuate more than before 1.1.1 while I am otherwise stationary
    - It takes longer to restore strong signal after emerging from a parking garage or elevator
    - EDGE signal sometimes disappears even if I have 4 or 5 bars.
    Anyone else?

Search the forums. This question has been asked multiple times.

  • I updated to IOS 5 and now my signal strength drops sometimes clear to zero when I open an app.

I updated my Iphone 4 with the IOS 5 operating system.  When I use an application, including the phone app, my signal strength bars will drop from 4 or 5 bars to 1 bar and sometimes to no bars and searching for a signal.  When I exit the app the bars return tto what they were before.  I have an AT&T plan that operates in Mexico which is where I am now.  In Mexico it operates on the TelCell network.  Before updating the op system I had no problems with the signal strength dropping when I used an app.

    Hello timfromharris,
Have you gone to your date and time settings and verified that "set automatically" has been checked?
If you don't know where to go, it's Settings -> General -> Date and Time.
    Good luck!

  • IPhone 4S 64GB - Problems since iOS 6.0 and now worse upon 6.1 attempt

    Hello,
It seems there are many who have been having trouble after updating to iOS 6.1.
My issue is similar, but has been going on and only gotten worse today.  I have an iPhone 4S (which is unfortunately out of AppleCare warranty) that has (ever since upgrading to iOS 6.0) been randomly shutting off, and native apps have been crashing.  This essentially renders the phone unusable as it is so frequent.  To resolve, I had tried restoring from backup (which updated the software to iOS 6.0.1), restoring from clean install without restoring from backup, and then ultimately taking it to Apple store A (I use the terms A & B to represent two apple stores which I brought the phone to, out of convenience to where I was located on each day) where they connected the phone and their computer wouldn't even recognize it in standard mode.  They then placed it into DFU mode and did a clean install with restore from backup which resulted in a recognizable piece of hardware.  They then told me the battery and harware all appeared to be functioning normally according to their diagnostics tests they ran on the computer.  They further stated it was definitely a software issue, and that there must have been some sort of error during the upgrade installation.  I left there hopeful and optimistic, and it continued to have the same problems not even 30 minutes later.  It then asked me to connect it to iTunes, so I had.  At that point the phone did another clean install and appeared to be stuck in the DFU restore loop.  I attempted to restore it on two different PC computers to no avail.  I wound up taking it to Apple store B, where they then plugged it in and did a clean restore in DFU mode, stating that all they had to do was plug it in to get it out of the DFU mode, completing the one cycle.  Again, they stated all diagnostics were clean and hardware was in perfect working order.  Again, I returned home, only to have problems resume in about 30 minutes.  The phone has been rather useless since for about the last week or so.
Today, I decided that since iOS 6.1 had been released, it couldn't hurt to give it a try and update the software, hoping my problems may have been answered in the form of a bug fix.  Well, regretably, it could and did get worse.  During the upgrade process to 6.1, I received the error "The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored.  An unknown error occurred.  It continues to do this each and every time I attempt the restore, and returns the iphone screen to the connect to itunes view.  Throughout the many times I have attempted the restore, I have gotten the above error message with codes (9) and (26).  It is now stuck in the recovery mode.  I have tried the restore to 6.1 from 3 different computers, trying all USB ports on each.  I have Symantec NIS 2013 installed on all computers, which I tried updating and disabling to no avail.  After working on it for several hours, I am at a loss for what to do.  Any suggestions (aside from the fact that I need to get a Mac lol... as soon as I can afford the 15" MBPwR...) for what I can do or try?  As I mentioned earlier, the phone is out of AppleCare warranty... :-/
In advance, I greatly appreciate anyone's input.

Have almost identicle situation going, totally screws my day for I have appointments to keep and important calls to make...this *****

  • IPhone 4s Signal Strength decreases after updating to iOS 6.1.2

    Hi,
Yesterday, I have updated my iPhone 4s to iOS 6.1.2 and the signal strength decreased from 5 bars to 2 bars. All of my phones at home with the same GSM provider shows 5 bars (full) and my iPhone 4s swings between 2 and 3 bar. Prior iOS 6.1.2 this was never the case. I would really appreciate if the developers at Apple can fix the problem as soon as possible. The low signal increase the battery consumption too.
    Waiting for your feedback.
    Kind regards,
    Cengiz Kuskaya

    hi
have the same problem on my iPhone4 & iPhone4s both have iOS6.1.2 .
very low signal after upgrade from iOS5.1.1 to 6.1.2 .

  • I am about to go get my 4th iphone 4s since November!  Up in the left coener where it shows your signal strength, it goes into searching mode and stays there.  Kills my battery.  This one has lasted the longest-I got it December 23.  Any ideas out there?

I am about to go get my 4th iphone 4s since November!  Up in the left corner where it shows your signal strength, it goes into searching mode and stays there.  Kills my battery.  While in searching, no calls can be made/recieved, no internet, etc. This one has lasted the longest-I got it December 23.  Any ideas out there?

Both.  The first two, I did use my itunes.  The guy at the apple store said that could be the problem.  The last time they gave me a new phone and SIM card, and the tech said it wouldnt be the itunes.  Just to be safe, I never connected this phone to the itunes until last night-after it started searching- to save everything since I'm sure they will be replacing the phone today.  But hey, thanks for the suggestions.  I'm about at my wits end with Apple!!  Especially since i added a third line to my account just so I could get an iphone back.

  • Lexus 350 (2010) bluetooth worked fine with iPhone 4 until i upgraded to iOS 5. now it's a problem. Get "no connect" . Bluetooth symbol shows up but no signal strength bar. Cannot make calls through car system. Music is also intermittant.

Bluetooth worked fine until I upgraded to iOS 5. Now I can't make calls. Get bluetooth symbol in car but no signal strength bars. Try to make a calll and can't do it. Music is also intermittant. Wifes phone ( Samsung) works fine. Problem began aftger upgrade

I fixed a similar problem on my Audi after hours of struggle!!!
I turned off Siri from settings.  I deleted bluetooth pairing with my car ("forget this device").  I re-established bluetooth connection.  I turned Siri back on.  All fine (so far).
It seemed to be Siri related.
If this works for the rest of you kindly pass it along to one or two of the other 1000 posts on this issue.  People are very frustrated right now.  Its not just Audi and Lexus and Ford - its every make/model on the planet!  This one is not obvious.
Let us know if it works for you.

  • Reception Signal Strength Quality worse than 1st Gen

At home, I get worse reception on my 3G iPhone than my 1st Gen iPhone. Is it just my phone or one of ATT's towers went down? Or did I just get a defective iPhone 3G? If anyone else has noticed this difference I would like to know.
    Thanks.

Same here. I know I live in an area where the signal is very strong ("best", according to AT&T), and my Sprint phone had full-strength here. My roommates have no problems, either.
However, with my new iPhone 3G, the bars are usually almost flat. If I turn 3G off, sometimes I get a better signal (at least according to the "bars") but I shouldn't have to do that.
I'm sitting right next to a window and it's almost flatlined. I walk around the house or drive around and it keeps changing....but full strength? I don't think I've seen it yet.
I'm really hoping this gets fixed asap, particularly if the bar graphic is an accurate reflection of the actual signal strength being received....because if not, I'm going to have to give up my iPhone, and I've been waiting over a YEAR to have this phone.

  • My battery is worse since Mavericks update

I have a mid 2012 15 inch Macbook Pro and my wife has a 2012 MacBook Air 3rd gen processor.
Both of us were running Mountain Lion and we have since independently dated our systems to Mavericks and the results have not been good.
Before this my wife believes she was getting around 5 hrs of battery, she could take it to work without the charger and it would last the day.
I was having a similar experience, 5 and a half, maybe 6 hours.
But that has now be basically halved for both of us.
Which is ridiculous as the update said it would improve our batteries.
Here is what I've done -
         1)     Reset PRAM - but the boot times were very much the same for both anyway.
         2)     Repairs any disk permission errors through Disk Utility.
         3)     I check Activity Monitor for anything that draining the battery. I know people tend to blame Chrome, but that was only an issue when I was streaming                    video, which I know Flash can make a CPU do overtime. But normally it was fine, so I dont believe that was to blame, but for arguments sake I have
removed it totally from my computer.
         4)     I then reset the SMC, this was the only part of the dignosis that I am not totally sure I have done correctly. I shut down my laptop, plugged in my charger,              then I held alt+ctrl+left shirt+power for between 10 to 15 seconds, I've done it a few time, and then let go and pressed power on. It booted up and then I              waited a while to see the expected battery life, on my laptop at full charch it said 4hr, which was less than before, I then used it on briefly online and it              was already dropped to 3.30 id only use it for 5minutes. I could expected at least 2 more hours charge normally. My wifes is just as worse she would get              5 hours normally, how when it books it says 3hrs and if she begins to use it that drops very quickly also.
         5)    I even went into recovery mode and reinstalled the OS which took ages as it downloads it from scratch, rather than accessing the previous one it                           installed.
So I'm out of ideas and honestly, I'm mega annoyed, both my wife and I were happy with out laptops before the update, we had no complaints whatsoever, now the battery has been so adversly effected that the laptops I dont feel comfortable using them without the charger being close by, which was something we could both do without much worry.
If you have any thoughts I would really like to hear from you.
Honestly, if I knew how to go back and re-install Mountain Lion I would, I did purchase it from the App Store but it doesnt seem to be there now.

        @Stubs,
Sorry about the delay in our response. I definitely understand how important it is to have a working phone so I want to do everything possible to get this issue resolved. Please go to menu-->settings-->about phone and phone status to verify the network strength. The issue with the battery draining quickly can occur if you the signal strength on your phone is weak. Also, reset the phone by powering it off, removing the battery and sim card for one one minute. Please let us know if the reset improves your signal. If not, please provide the signal strength of your device.

  • Loss of Reception/signal on 4S with iOS 6.1.1 update

Since updating to iOs 6.1.1, I have noticed on my phone and my fiancee's phone there has been a loss of reception/signal. As I thought  this update fixes an issue that could impact cellular performance and reliability for iPhone 4S. But it looks as if it affected it to where I now no longer get all bars of signal as before the update my signal strength was excellent all bars lit up and receiving signal was excellent since the 6.1.1 update I no longer get a full signal, I get between 2 and 4 bars shown never 5 now since update. I think a fix update should be in order to correct the issue as before it was good now it is terrible. I know others also have been compaining about battery drain on iOS 6.1.1 but I have not seen that on mine or my fiancees phone just the signal strength does not go above 4 on either of our phones like as before they would sit at 5 in our house and anywhere we would travel. Has anybody else noticed that if so please let me know so I know I am not the only to see that since updating to iOS 6.1.1. Thanks and have a nice day.

Hi again, today's journey to the Apple store was worthwhile. Not only did I get a replacement phone,  it was still under warranty, but also an explanation as to what may have caused the problem.
According to the technician who assisted me, as the upgrade from IOS 5.- to 6.- is quite large, in the transfer of information upgrade, apparently the programming data for wifi and Bluetooth connectivity was lost, which apparently sometimes happens, this being described as a freak occurrence. According to the technician, if this occurs, it becomes a hardware fault and there is no repair, replacement is essentially the only option. Fortunately as I was within the warranty period, on the spot replacement was available, already with IOS 6.- on it, so was informed that the same problem would not occur.
Upon arriving home, after a minor upgrade to 6.1.2 I was able to put everything back on to the phone so it ran like it did three or so weeks ago. The other advice given was to always hook up to iTunes via your computer to do the larger updates, those that increase in whole number, as those that increase incrementally are usually very minor and are usually an addition of data, not replacement.
I hope this helps others with their problem, mine in the end was resolved within ten minutes in-store. I dread to think what situation I would have been left in if I was not within the warranty period. Good luck to you all!

  • Very weak wifi signal after updating to iOS 7.0.5

I am in Malaysia, and received notification to update software to iOS 7.0.5 a couple of days ago. Since the update, i keep losing wifi signal in the house, which did.not happen before the update. Even when connected to the wifi, the signal bar shows 2 while my other iPhone 4S and iPads are showing full signal strength.
Please advise how I can rollback to the previous version, as i have just realised this new update was meant for China.
    Please help! Thank you.

My problem exactly! With Iphone 4! The updated phone will not connect, the other Iphone 4 not running this latest update works fine! Come on Apple!! Need a fix yesterday!

  • Signal Strength Problems - 1310

I've got a site with six 1310's installed. Prior to Hurricane Katrina we've had no problems with the setup.
Since the hurricane, we've replaced all but two of the units (those two didn't get flooded). On the units that were replaced, we also replaced the antenna's (12dBi omni's) and the cable's (100' ULL).
We are getting really poor signal strength, -85 to -90 dBm. The maximum distance between root and non-root's is about 425 feet with clear line of sight. I don't have a good calculation of Fresnel zone, but since it is 28ft at 2.8 miles, I think I'm clear on this also.
I've two non-roots that are about 200 feet away from root, on start-up they have a signal strength of about -50 dBm, but over 10-15 minutes, they degrade to -85 dBm.
The Cisco engineer I was working with was thrown in the towel, saying he doesn't know anything about antenna's.
I did a site survey and didn't come up with any interference.
    Anyone have any clues?
    Thanks,
    Westley

Thanks for the pictures, it helps a lot to see how things are layed out.
The move to replace 200' of low loss to 100 feet of Ultra low loss was probably a Very Good Thing and should have increased the signal strength considerably.
Grounding is very important, if only for the safety aspects. "Lightning Arrestors" don't stop lightning; they bleed off static electricity and (tend to) reduce the space charge that can accumulate on exposed elements.
It's always a good idea to put in a segment of fiber between the APs and the wired network to prevent the zap from killing the rest of the network (and maybe the phones too ....).
Check the coax for kinks (or places that were kinked), sharp bends, broken jacket, etc. At Gig+ frequencies, any malformed section of cabling an have a significant impact on the propagation of the signal.
Check each connector to make sure there isn't any "stuff" that is causing a casual short between the center conductor and the shield. Look closely, wire fragments from the braid can be pretty hard to see.
Also make sure that the center pin is ~level with the surrounding sleeve. Sometime the center pin is driven back into the connector (i.e., bad termination) and is not making sufficient contact.
The "starts strong and tapers off" symptom can only be something related to power, a failing component, heat (causing a component to break down), or some safety mechanism (i.e., high SWR causing the transmitter to throttle back)....
Try another known good power brick,
    Try another antenna (any antenna)
and see if the symptoms change.
Probably the most suspicious places would be the connections around the arrestor, and the connection from the coax to the antenna pigtail.
I looked at the pattern of your new antennas:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/wireless/ps469/prod_installation_guide09186a0080148acf.html
The "E-Plane" drawings are the "side view," the "H-Plane" is the "top view". Imagine the line from the center of the chart to the "90" (bottom) is your mast.
Anyway, the short version is: Check the cable and connections carefully (especially connections and the arrestors).
Second to that, make sure the power supply is stable.
It's not likely to be an IOS issue (but I'm a big fan of staying as current as possible).
Check it out and let us know if you find anything ...
    Good Luck
    Scott

  • Randomly shutting off since ios 8

I Have an iPhone 5 that I updated to ios 8 via iTunes the day it was released.  Things seemed to be fine until today.  I was out and about and was surprised I didn't get any calls or messages, so I pulled my phone out of my pocket and it was dead.  I had to hold the power button down for 10 seconds or more and then the apple logo appeared like it was booting up.  It came online but with one weird thing.  It said "Searching..." Next to the LTE badge in the upper right corner.  I was able to go on the Internet so I knew I had signal (AT&T).  My battery was at 72% so I thought oh well maybe it just crashed.  So I put the phone back in my pocket.  Later I grab my phone and it's off again.  I did the same thing as above... It wouldn't turn on with just a button press, but after holding down power for awhile it finally booted up.  Again 72% battery and searching in the upper right.  So today it did this about 5 times.  On my car ride home it did not, though it is plugged in, running pandora and waze, and it was only a 10 min ride.  But I got home and after being home for about 10 min, phone was dead again.
I Booted it back up like above, same issue but battery was 79% now (thanks to the car ride with charger).  Now it's sitting in my dock and I'm going to charge it a little more before going out again.  Any ideas what is wrong with it?  Never had this issue before on ios 7.1.1.  I just did a "reset network settings" and it rebooted so we will see if that helps at all.

Reset network settings didn't fix it.  Did get it charged to 92% in the dock, went for a drive to pick up a pizza I ordered, but when I got back in the car with the Pizza, the phone was off again.
Another weird thing I notice when turning it back on, though it works ok on the cellular LTE network, it says Searching... next to LTE and it says "iPhone requires your passcode after restarting" - it never said that before on IOS 7.1.
I got it up to 100% battery life but it still shut off.  I also had a heck of a time getting it connected to itunes.  It kept showing the apple logo on the iphone, then it would go dark, then it would show the apple logo again, and basically keep doing that.  I got lucky that eventually I got it to turn on and now I'm going to back the whole thing up and try a factory reset and restore.
I don't think its the battery because I replaced that last winter and the issue was different.  Back then it would just die randomly between 35% and 11% and if you went to turn it on it would show the battery icon with the red line indicating "please charge me".  Its not doing that this time around since the new battery (Jan/Feb timeframe).
What else it started doing today, even though IOS 8 was installed the day it was released, was that I was randomly getting popups saying that other programs were using location services in the background and I could continue or go to settings.  I kept that on for most apps but turned it off for some others.  Not sure if thats related but that just started TODAY, the same day that my signal strength meter isn't working and the phone is randomly shutting down.

  • Ignoring the signal strength indicator.....

I see a lot of posts saying they have less bars on 3G... etc
My question is for Gen 1 owners who now have a gen2 phone. WIthout comparing the signal strength indicator do you find reception is better, worse or the same...
Also, is the sound quality of the speaker better as they claim?
    Thanks

I didn't have a first gen iphone but I find reception much much better, in areas where there were dead spots I have great reception...even in my house...which is the opposite of what I heard about 3g...now I just need my phone to receive calls and voicemail...my port is taking forever since 11:15AM yesterday...its now 8:08AM my time and no dice...
