Signed applet communication on Mac

In Denmark homebanking is goin on the net with NetBank. My bank postulates that Mac users cannot participate, as signed applet communication is not supported on Macs.
I find it hard to believe an suspect that ActiveX components are the crook here.
Can anybody confirm my suspicion. Or clear my Bank :-)

The bank probably says that because it doesn't have any Macs to test it on. Signed applets do work on Macs. However, not all of JRE 1.1 may be implemented in NS 4 or IE 5.0.
I think providing applet only access to Netbanking is a really dumb idea. Fortunately, my bank has not gone the applet route and I can use netbanking services just fine on my Mac with 128 bit encryption.
If I were you, I would just switch to a bank that is more Mac friendly...

Signed Applet not loading on Mac OS X if using HTTPS protocol

I need to open a trusted applet on Mac OS 10.2. The applet works fine if using HTTP protocol. But if the protocol used is HTTPS the the applet does not loads and "javax.net.ssl.SSLException - untrusted server cert chain" exception comes on the console.
The error comes for both - Verisign and javakey - signed applet.

It says that this is Mac's known bug and gives the workaround as:
1. Access the problematic site with Internet Explorer on Windows. Click on the padlock item and export the certificate to a file.
2. Copy the certificate to your Mac.
3. Use the command
sudo keytool -import -trustcacerts -keystore /Library/Java/Home/lib/security/cacerts -file mycert.cer
to import the certificate file to your keystore (substitute mycert.cer with the name of the file containing the certificate). The keystore is password protected - the default password is "changeit".
4. Restart your browser
But the client cannot be asked to do all this to run the applet.
Is this problem being solved by Mac in their java implementation or is there any other possible solution?

I am experiencing the same problem - I notice it does not happen on OS9.2 using IE but appears a problem on all browsers on OSX

Safari will not run a signed applet on mac os x 10.5.7 with new Java update

Hi Everyone,
I've got a problem that hopefully you guys can help me solve. I have an applet that runs on windows, mac and linux that is signed by a verisign certificate my work has. The certificate is valid and everything works just fine on windows and linux, but after I upgraded our macs with the newest java update for mac (which gave macs Java 1.6.13), the applets won't work. When the applet is loaded in Safari or Firefox, it asks if I want to trust the certificate. When I tell it to trust it, Safari comes back with a message saying that it will not trust the code and will treat it as unsigned code.
For a long time the applet was built and signed on windows, but now it can be built and signed on windows and mac. Building and signing on either platform gives the same results and the mac signed applet works just fine on windows.
Has anyone else run across this problem? Any help or advice will be appreciated.

Signed applet ok on pc, no dialog on Mac!!

I have an applet that needs to print. Since I was unable to figure out how to change the policy file on a mac, I decided to sign my applet. The signing worked fine and whenever I connect through either Mac os X (explorer 5.1 for os x) or Windows 95 / 98 (explorer), it pops up the dialogue box asking for permission to run the signed applet. However, when connecting to a mac running OS 9 (explorer 5.0 or 5.1 for os9), I do not get a dialog. It simply loads my applet. But, when I attempt to print, I get a security exception!! If anyone has any idea of a work around I would appreciate it. This is the final function I need to add before getting rid of this project.

Can I ask you a question on how to let the applet run on OS9. I have a singed applet which works on OS10. But on 9, it always have bad major version problem. I even tried a simple HelloApplet(non signed) on OS9, it is still the same problem. I also tried to compile javac -target 1.1 HelloApplet.java which failed too. The html file looks like:

Due to which cannot access Applet class (which is inside UploadDownloadAppletJava.jar) and operation is failed.
(It works perfectly fine on Windows XP with both IE 6 and Firefox browsers).

Signed applet and javascript communication

Hi All,
I have an (jar) signed applet which I use to access system properties (e.g user.home). I also have a javascript code that communicates (call to a public function) with the applet to get the property "user.home" from the applet. Everything works fine in Java plugin 1.3 but since I have installed the latest plugin 1.4.2_01 from http://www.java.com/en/download/windows_automatic.jsp website I can not access the system properties even though everything in the code is same.
I can however still access public functions/variables from the same applet which do not access system properties in the new plugin 1.4.2_01.
The browser I am using is IE and OS is Windows 2000.
Does anybody know if Sun has changed the security policy for 1.4.2_01, in the new plugin for java-javascript communication to block access to functions which uses system property,fileIO, socket etc. even if they are signed applet??

When invokin applet methods via javascript, you are accessing privileged actions from an unsafe source.
Depending on your needs, you could either load the system variables in applet init into class variables and return the information contained in the class variables to javascript or wrap the method calls inside AccessController.doPrivileged() calls.

Applet in Apple Mac OSX problem

Hi all,
have developing an applet long while using WinXP platform, everthing seem ok, but when i try over Apple Mac OSX, i has a loading problem saying that init failed to load ArrayList as error message said:
ArrayIndexOutOfBound, 0...
but when i debug print out the ArrayList content and its length, i'm sure that this ArrayList is NOT NULL and its length is NOT ZERO either. what is happening here? oh, ya, this only happen in Safari, in FireFox for Mac no problem, even Camino also pass the test, why? anyone have idea about this? because i'm new to Apple Mac.
also, there is another question whereby, when i use FireFox for Mac to load the applet, the applet load seem no problem but it just can't display properly. what i mean is that in Windows platform (IE6), this applet show entire applet successfully, but when i try it in Mac, it show only a part of applet without any error, but when i try to refresh the page, applet is now successfully show, why?
lastly, when a button of an applet being click and this will bring a new window with some parameters value, its work on IE in Windows platform, why it won't work for FireFox or Safari for Mac? i see prompt out saying is security problem, is there any workout of this? thanks. to summary out of junk above:

above:Often you can sign applets so they can do things that unsigned applets aren't allowed to do.
Maybe you're making some kind of security mistake that Firefox and Safari are (properly) catching but IE isn't. In any event, post the error message.

Prevent abuse of a signed applet?

I am creating an application using HTML, javascript, and a set of java classes.
Communication betwwen the javascript and java is done by an applet, signed with a real certificate.
I would like to prevent someone copying my signed jar, and abusing it.
The classes behind my applet will do (a.o.) local I/O.
The type of abuse I am worried about is e.g. java code from another jar calling public methods on classes in my signed jar, using them to read or write files, and thus abusing my certificate for doing something else than my applet/jar was meant to.
I am looking for advice on how to prevent such things from happening.
Thoughts that already crossed my mind, are:
- making sure only my applet (and as few as possible other classes) has a public constructor
- declaring as much classes as possible (at least the sensitive classes) as final
- avoid non-final public static variables that contain default names of files
If anyone has some more ideas, please post them! I'll be very gratefull!

You scared the hell out of me however, by saying:

Everything worked fine in jre 1.4.1_2 and earlier. It continued working in 1.4.2_01 in combination with Netscape (v 7.1)
But the combination MSIE (v6.0) with jre v1.4.2_01 did require a minor change:
From my signed applet, I called a .class.getResource(...).getURL()
It didn't work anymore, so I do it know in my applet's init() method, instead of in a stack started by javascript.
All my other I/O (and reflection) still works (thank all gods!), since I do it in a separate thread that I start in my applet's init() method. I hope it keeps working in jre 1.5 :-)
Any other input is very welcome!

OS X 10.5.6, Safari 3.2.1 hangs when second applet loaded is signed applet

I've been investigating a customer's problem. She is trying to use our
VoIP applet, but it continuously freezes Safari when the Trust dialog shows.
A "Force Quit" is necessary.
I managed to reproduce the problem consistently on
- PowerMac7 OS X 10.5.6 (Build 9G55)
- Architecture: ppc
- Safari 3.2.1 (5525.27.1)
- JVM 1.5.0_16 from Apple
The problem is persistent when:
- the signed applet is loaded as second applet in the browser
- the signed applet is cached by the JVM
Our customer uses:
- Mac Book ProOS X 10.5.6
- Safari 3.2.1
- JVM 1.5.0_16 from Apple
This problem does not occur on:
- Mac OS X 10.4.11 (Mac Powerbook G4)
- Safari 3.2.1 (4525.27.1)
- JVM 1.5.0_16 from Apple
and not on:
- MacBook Air, OS X 10.5.6, 1.6 Ghz Intel core 2 duo
- Safari Version 3.2.1 (5525.27.1)
- JVM 1.5.0_16 from Apple
Steps to reproduce the problem:
Launch Safari.
In (first) page/tab go to
http://www.javatester.org/version.html
(this uses a non signed applet)
Open a second tab. Here go to:
http://ukapi.phonefromhere.com/talk/vtop2.xsql?key=01612884242
This is a signed applet that will ring our office over VoIP.
Click the "Trust" button (signed by PhoneFromHere).
As long as this applet isn't cached by the JVM this will work, so
the first time you will succeed.
Now Quit Safari (not "just" close all Safari windows, but a "real" quit) and repeat the exercise.
The second (and next) time this will fail (only if the signed applet is loaded as second, so the order is important)! This keeps failing until I go (back) to the Java Preference window (via Finder) and explicitly delete the cached files.
The URL will work when loaded first (cached or not).
Some diagnostics, that might help:
I configured the Java Preference window to "enable Logging, Tracing and Show applet livecycle exceptions".
When the applet fails to load (and Safari freezes/hangs), the last few records of the plugin150.log are:

To cut a long story short? Is this a know bug (I couldn't find anything, but you never know)? Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this?

I have the same issue now after downgrading my Flash plugin. I downgraded from 10 to 9 latest because I like using Camino and for some reason Flash 10 doesn't play nice with Camino. But all of a sudden as I use Camino 2b2 for everyday and Safari 3.2 for banking and such, the browser hangs requiring a forced quit when I close it. I've re-installed the browser twice now with all the previous folders, and preferences erased and caches emptied. I even when to re-installing 10.5.6 and it still crashes, it's odd. Maybe 10.5.7 will address this.

Calling1.4.1 signed applet from Javascript causes keyboard/focus problems

Pretty sure there's a JRE bug here, but I'm posting to forums before I open one in case I'm missing something obvious :-)
This issue may be specific to IE, I haven't tested elsewhere yet. Our web application is centered around a signed applet that is initialized with XML data via Javascript. We first noticed the problem when our users started upgrading from the 1.3.x plug-in to the 1.4.x plug-in. The major symptom was that shortcut keys stopped working. I debugged the problem off and on for about a month before I boiled it down to a very simple program that demonstrates the issue (included below). Basically, the program has a function that adds a JButton to a JPanel and registers a keyboard listener (using the new DefaultKeyboardFocusManager class) that prints a message to the console. This function is called by the applet's init() method, as well as by a public method that can be called from Javascript (called callMeFromJavascript()). I also included a very simple HTML file that provides a button that calls the callMeFromJavascript() method. You can test this out yourself: To recreate, compile the class below, JAR it up, sign the JAR, and put in the same dir with the HTML file. Load the HTML file in IE 5.0 or greater, and bring the console up in a window right next to it. Now click the button that says init--you should see the small box appear inside the button that indicates it has the focus. Now press some keys on your keyboard. You should see "KEY PRESSED!!!" appearing in the console. This is proper behavior. Now click the Init Applet from Javascript button. It has removed the button called init, and added one called "javascript". Press this button. Notice there is no focus occurring. Now press your keyboard. No keyboard events are registered.
Where is gets interesting is that if you go back and make this an unsigned applet, and try it again, everything works fine. This bug only occurs if the applet is signed.
Furthermore, if you try it in 1.3, signed or unsigned, it also works. So this is almost certainly a 1.4 bug.
Anyone disagree? Better yet, anyone have a workaround? I've tried everything I could think of, including launching a thread from the init() method that sets up the components, and then just waits for the data to be set by Javascript. But it seems that ANY communication between the method called by Javascript and the code originating in init() corrupts something and we don't get keyboard events. This bug is killing my users who are very reliant on their shortcut keys for productivity, and we have a somewhat unique user interface that relies on Javascript for initialization. Any help or suggestions are appreciated.

I tried adding the requestFocus() line you suggested... Same behavior.
A good thought, but as I mention in my description, the applet has no trouble gaining the focus initially (when init() is called). From what I have seen, it is only when the call stack has been touched by Javascript that I see problems. This is strange though: Your post gave me the idea of popping the whole panel into a JFrame... I tried it, and the keyboard/focus problem went away! It seems to happen only when the component hierarchy is descended from the JApplet's content pane. So that adds yet another variable: JRE 1.4 + Signed + Javascript + components descended from JApplet content pane.
And yes, signed or unsigned DOES seem to make a difference. Don't ask me to explain why, but I have run this little applet through quite a few single variable tests (change one variable and see what happens). The same JAR that can't receive keyboard events when signed, works just fine unsigned. Trust me, I'm just as baffled as you are.

Accessing Signed Applet Method From Javascript

I have used the signed applet and able to retrive the mac address of the client using IE but I am not able to do the same on NN 7.1

Since getWinMACAddress( ) seems to work just fine for IE, is there an equivalent for NN7.1?
What happens if I run Opera instead, and on a Linux system? Or Safari on OS X? Obviously getWinMACAddress( ) isn't going to work for that.
I really don't understand why so many Asian programmers get "Find the MAC address of..." as a homework assignment. There are many reasons why it isn't really practical to do so, and for examples, just search this forum for MAC addresses. Lots and lots of examples and counter examples.

I used the file from C:\WINNT\java\Packages\ folder.
I used GI53BPN9.zip (My OS is Windows 2000)
there are 8 files on this folders
Windows 2000 and Windows NT has diferrent name for the package file.
I think you should use all the zip file from "C:\WINNT\java\Packages\", Because I'm not sure which file contain com.ms.security on your computer.

Uploaded content modification detecting(from Signed Applet)

Hello,
I have a question about signed applets and content verification on client machine. Let's consider the following scenario:
I have uploaded an image to client machine(using signed applet)
Client have modified the image
I want to detect that image was modified... And change it to default, stored in web host.
Is there any way to identify modification? Or maybe there are some other tecniques of storing content to client's machine, not using raw resources?

An applet, which is not an app, normally has certain restrictions which would be sufficient for most apps.
And the proxy setting impacts the VM, nothing else. So if the applet returns null then it means the VM has no setting. That doesn't mean that one or more proxies are not in the chain of communication. But you are not going to get those from the VM.

I can't get the method in applet from javascript in jre1.4. Are there have a different way to communication?

I have a similiar problem. Left a post in the Signed Applet board. I can get the methods called on my applet when operating over HTTP, but when I am on a page served from HTTPS, the browser chews up memory, goes to 100% processor utilization, and the method is never called. This is with the 1.4 plugin.

Signed applet don't work on XP

I'am currently working on a point-of-sale (POS) using windows XP/Firefox and a linux apache/jboss server.
I have developed a dynamic windows library in order to use an industrial printer connected to the POS to perform some printing without confirmation of the customer.
The POS is under Windows XP SP2 and use Firefox 2.0.0.11/JRE 1.5.0.14.
This dll is used by a signed applet located on the apache/jboss server.
The applet is correctly downloaded by the client, but normally i have to wait for the certicat authentification windows appearing and for confirming that i want execute the applet. And instead i have a java exception :

What is amazing, is that work fine with my own professionnal PC on W2000 SP4, with JRE1.5.0.14 and Firefox 2.0.0.11 :
when I look in the java console, the java freeze until i have answered this java security window (certicat authentification windows). And when i answered "run" no problem the applet makes her own job.

Ok I have found my problem :
On every web pages, we have defined some inactivity timeouts.
On my own server I have disabled these timeouts but not on the distant timeout.
And it seems that the timeout (defined in javascript ont he web pages : 3s) has a very bad influence on the launching of my applet ... only with firefox (with IE and Opera no problem)
My problem is anwsered but the problem keep alive for firefox ...
