Signed applet with jdk1.4.2

Hello, friends! I'm having difficulties running an applet with jdk1.4.2. This applet was working properly with the previous version, jdk1.4.1. Perhaps I've forgotten some details or some changes in the new version. Any idea?
Thank you.

Hi there,
I am also facing similar problem. Please read the following.
I have a query regarding JRE 1.4.2_03. What does it have, which makes it differ from JRE 1.4.1_02 ? Actually, I am asking this question, because I have a signed JApplet where, user's select a file displayed in client JApplet's JTable and stores it to the specified location on his/her local drive. The JApplet runs perfectly well running in IE 6.0 with JRE 1.4.1_02. But, gives error on IE 6.0 with JRE 1.4.2_03.
Any help regarding the same will be helpful...
I tried a Signed applet with no GUI in it which runs well on JRE 1.4.2_03.
Both the applets are signed with jdk1.1.6.
Thanking you in advance,
Ganesh A Baviskar.

  • Signing Applets with javakey

    Hi All,
    I have an Intranet application that uses a signed applet to access files on the client. It all works fine using JDK1.3 or 1.4 and signing the Applet with keytool.
    I now need to support an older server that only has JDK1.1 available. Does anyone have any tips on how to sign my Applet with javakey?
    Also what JRE version should be installed on the clients?
    Thanks in advance.
    P.S. I have followed the example at http://java.sun.com/security/usingJavakey.html but not got it to work.

    try this..

  • Jms signed applet with SP3

    Hi,
              I am using a thin client version of weblogic client & jms jars for my signed applet.I am getting an exception when I try to initialize the applet without closing the browser window. This was an issue in SP2 and was reportedly fixed in SP3 but for some reason I dont see it working.
              I am using 1.4.2_05 as the jre for my java plugin and 8.1 SP3 for my weblogic. I see the messages these messages being printed in the logs

              But in my case, the applet is signed and I can see it in the trace as well as I get a prompt whether I want to accept the signed applet when the applet is about to be invoked. I have signed the applet using my own certificate instead of one from verisign or other CA's. I dont think it should matter.
              Does anyone know if this was really fixed in SP3?
              This is what documentation for resolved issues for 8.1 SP3 says :
              CR120811
              When using the WebLogic thin client with an applet, concurrentModificationExceptions and JMSExceptions were thrown. Investigation showed that there were two problems:
              There was a problem with the Sun ORB implementation. An applet's virtual machine released AppletContext upon a browser refresh and stopped all threads in the applet context's thread group. When an ORB was initialized as part of an applet context, the reader threads were created in the applet context's thread group. When the browser was refreshed, the ORB reader threads were also stopped.
              The WebLogic thin client created two threads in the applet context group: a HeartbeatMonitor thread and a RequestTimer thread. When the browser was refreshed, these threads were stopped with others in the applet context group.
              The problems were solved with the following changes:
              The Sun ORB implementation changed in JDK 1.4.2_04 so that it creates the reader threads on a child thread group of the system thread group but not to the applet's context thread group. This change ensures the reader thread stays alive as long as the orb is alive or applet's JVM is alive.
              The WebLogic thin client TunnelResponse and HeartbeatMonitor threads are now created on a child thread group of the system thread group but not to the applet's context thread group. This change ensures these threads stay alive as long as applet's JVM is alive. The fix is provided only for signed applets.
              I would really appreciate if someone could give any insight to this problem.
              Thanks,
              Jatinder

    I am also getting this error.

If so, such newly signed applets must force end-users to install 7u51, otherwise such applets need to be "all-permissions" applets unnecessarily. Is it correct behavior?

    Have you tried signing your applet?
    to sign an applet , you can approach 3d parties like Thawte or you can sign them yourself.
    Package your class file into a .jar, Create your own keystore, sign the jar file using this keystore.
    Then you will be able to open it in a browser.

    The error appears not to be caught by my code. I have tried to insert try/catch statements everywhere to figure out where this error is produced.
    The code is write off of the applet for signing with a smart card by Svetlin Nakov - and his applet works!
    I have also made a CLI application that uses the above code and it works perfectly.
    So: Something is wrong either with my certificate, the signing method, signature verification or something completely different. Any hints?
    The certificate I generated with
    keytool -genkey -keystore mystore -alias me
    keytool -seflcert -keystore mystore -alias meI have tired both with and without the selfcert step.
    Thanks! Erik

    The problem has been identified: Placing registerProvider() in the constructor the error no longer occurs, instead an error is produced when the key store is loaded.
    It appears that the javascript code is not trusted and so, even though the applet is signed, access privileges are restricted to those of the java script.
    A solution to this problem is not clear, but possibly, serving the pages from a trusted server, the java script will be trusted, some documentation seem to indicate.

  • Capture and RTP on a SIGNED applet.

    I am trying to build an applet that allows users to chat both ways. I want the user to install nothing (other than java) and i provide the libraries they need (including jmf). I have signed the applet to ease my troubles, but it seems they are still there. The basic goal: capture audio from two microphones, send the audio via RTP, hear audio on both sides.
    Even though I have a signed applet with all permissions, I lack permission to capture from applets? Aside from the fact that this seems absurd, it's frustrating. I am looking to find a way around this. I don't want the users to have to manually change the JMFRegistry or download a program to it.
    The better options :
    1) Is there a way to take advantage of the signed applet to alter the permissions in the program? (Seems very unlikely, but it would be the best).
    2) Is there a way to provide the permissions in the jmf.jar (including jmf.properties?) that I include? (Seems more unlikely than 1)
    3) What makes this more interesting (frustrating), I can use the Java Sound API to access the microphone and open an AudioInputStream. Can I plug this stream, or some other object from javasound, into the JMF somehow to send it via RTP?
    4) Other options?

    I found a way to use javasound instead of the jmf for the source audio (that's number 3 in my original post). So, i'm good for my problem.
    If you want to do mixing, javasound should have more support for mixing (though I've not done it). Check out this thread, it was very useful for me.
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=680525&start=0&tstart=0
    I might have spoken too soon... I am just getting static - but that might be related to audio formats.....

  • Signed applets in 1.4.1: non-trust ignored: severe security problem?

    Hello all,
    I am signing applets with a developer certificate.
    Until know everything worked fine with Plugin 1.3.1.
    Know I changed to Plugin 1.4.1 and encountered a strange behaviour: When I open the HTML page with a browser (tried IE 5.5 and Mozilla 1.1) the certificate-question pops up. The problem: if I choose not to trust the certificate, the applets starts nevertheless and I can use the system clipboard inside my Applet (for what applets needs to be signed)!
    This looks like a severe security problem!
    Does anyone know anything about this? Can you reproduce this?
    thanx!
    Marcus

    Hi,
    I tried to reproduce what you said with plugin 1.4.0 (I don't have 1.4.1 yet) and IE6.0 (It doesn't have anything to do with the browser)
    My Java console said :
    "User has denied the priviledges to the code
    writeFile: caught security exception"
    The security seems to work OK in 1.4.0.
    I will have to try 1.4.1.

    (when I change the code to a JFrame and run it as an application it works but I want to connect a local database in a JApplet code and I have to use signed applet but it dosn't work)
    How can I solve this problem?
    Thanks a lot

    Can anyone help to resolve this security issue. Urgent...
    Thanks in advance.

    Hey thanks. I wasn't able to get it to work with that sample but I did find this very similar code that does allow javascript to call JFileChooser in an applets public method.
    java.security.AccessController.doPrivileged(
    new java.security.PrivilegedAction()
    public Object run(){
    //do your special code here
    return null; //return whatever you want
    It seems a bit tempermental in that if you don't select a file quickly, it will hang the browser....no perfect solution but I'm going in the right direction.
    Thanks,
    Scott

  • Problems with signed Applet for File Download under JRE 1.4 (works with 1.3

    Dear all,
    i encountered a very strange behaviour with JRE 1.4x. A signed applet used for file download worked on all platforms (Windows NT, 2000 and XP wth/wthout SP...) until I installed JRE 1.4.x (1.4.1 or 1.4.2)
    I get an EOFException when downloading binary files (for ASCII it works fine) when trying to readByte() from a DataInputStream. But not immideately, but after x bytes in the while-loop. Security is fine (I know there have been changes to that in jre 1.4, the applet itself can be started an runs with ASCII files for transfer)
    Does anyone know, what has changed in jre1.4.
    As I said, it works fine under jre 1.3.x
    The relevant code is below: byte bt = dis.readByte(); causes the error
    try{
    // Get URL from Server
    URL uFile = new URL(sFilename);
    sThisURLFile = uFile.getFile();
    Integer inte = new Integer(i);
    //open input stream for the file on server
    DataInputStream dis = new DataInputStream(new BufferedInputStream
    (uFile.openConnection().getInputStream()));
    //open output stream for the file on local drive
    String sFilenameOnly = sThisURLFile.substring(sThisURLFile.lastIndexOf('/')+1);
    int iDotPos = sFilenameOnly.lastIndexOf(".");
    String sExt;
    if (iDotPos > 0) {
    sExt= sFilenameOnly.substring(iDotPos);
    } else {
    sExt = "";
    File fileOut = new File(sDownloadDir + sThisURLFile.substring(sThisURLFile.lastIndexOf('/')+1) );
    DataOutputStream dos = new DataOutputStream(new
    BufferedOutputStream(new FileOutputStream(fileOut)));
    //read one byte from input stream, and write that byte to output stream
    long nByte = 0;
    int iCnt = 0;
    iFilesizeDone ++;
    while (nByte < iFilesize){
    String sErrPs = new String();
    try{
    sErrPs = "00";
    byte bt = dis.readByte();
    sErrPs = "01";
    dos.writeByte(bt);
    } catch (EOFException ee)
    System.err.println("internal EOFException: " + ee.getMessage());
    System.out.println("Error Filesize is " nByte " of " iFilesize "---" + sErrPs);
    break;
    nByte++;
    iFilesizeDone ++;
    iCnt ++;
    if(iCnt >= 10240) {
    ShowProgress(nByte, iFilesize, iFilesizeDone, iFilesizeTotal); // repaint does not work during init-procedure
    iCnt = 0;
    line = "Progress: Total: " + ((iFilesizeDone*100)/iFilesizeTotal) + " perc, " + iFilesizeTotal/1024 +" kbytes" ;
    labLine.setText(line);
    //dos.flush(); // improves Client performance (Agent-Call!)
    dis.close();
    dos.close();
    }// End try
    catch (EOFException ee)
    System.err.println("EOFException: " + ee.getMessage()e);
    catch (SecurityException se)
    System.err.println("SecurityException: " + se.getMessage());
    catch (IOException ioe)
    System.err.println("IOException: " + ioe.getMessage());

    perhaps they've changed something with the file blocking.
    btw, you should try to use something like this
    DataInputStream dis = new DataInputStream(is);
    byte[] buffer=new byte[8192];
    int numBytesRead;
    while ( dis.available()>0 ) {
         numBytesRead = dis.read(buffer);
    }

  • Safari will not run a signed applet on mac os x 10.5.7 with new Java update

    Hi Everyone,
    I've got a problem that hopefully you guys can help me solve. I have an applet that runs on windows, mac and linux that is signed by a verisign certificate my work has. The certificate is valid and everything works just fine on windows and linux, but after I upgraded our macs with the newest java update for mac (which gave macs Java 1.6.13), the applets won't work. When the applet is loaded in Safari or Firefox, it asks if I want to trust the certificate. When I tell it to trust it, Safari comes back with a message saying that it will not trust the code and will treat it as unsigned code.
    For a long time the applet was built and signed on windows, but now it can be built and signed on windows and mac. Building and signing on either platform gives the same results and the mac signed applet works just fine on windows.
    Has anyone else run across this problem? Any help or advice will be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Robbie

    BenGlancy wrote:
    How did you tell it to fully trust it? I thought the dialog comes up asking the user whether to trust it.
    I only ask because it's not practical to expect all users to dig around for settings to trust a particular certificate.They don't have to dig around. When a signed Applet is loaded, if the certificate chain contains a certificate not in the trust store then a dialogue box asks the user if he wants to run it anyway. This dialogue box also has check box to indicate the the user should always trust this certificate and checking this means the user will not be asked again.
