Significant Pixelation in SD DVD from HD source

I just completed a project in FCP where I edited source from 3 different HD cameras. I imported the source in Apple ProRes, and then downconverted to SD using Compressor. The resulting DVD quality is absolutely terrible - much worse than if I had simply recorded it in SD. The main problem is pixelation to the point where faces at a distance in the video are unrecognizable.
I tried using Compressor explicitly, as well as exporting to a QuickTime movie and then importing it into DVD Studio Pro and having it do the encoding. The QuickTime file looks fine on my Mac, as does the MPEG-2 file generated from Compressor, so I am guessing it is something in DVD Studio Pro.
Any thoughts as to what I might look at as a next step?

Pixelated DVD from flawless source

I recently transfered about 76 mins. of footage from my DV camera into iMovie 5.0.2. I then dropped the project into iDVD 7.0.2 and used the professional setting to master to a VIDEO_TS folder. When I burn this to DVDR a short portion (about 15 sec.) in the middle of the movie is very pixelated. When I view that portion directly from the vob file it has the same pixelation problem. When I view it in iMovie it looks fine. I took that same portion and some surrounding footage and made a 28 sec. DVD. Now in this case it plays fine, which leads me to believe it's an iDVD problem. I've mastered this probably five or six times with the same problem every time. Any help would be appreciated.

Well, now I'm thoroughly confused.
I had thought that:
'Best Performance' meant that your project would encode the fastest but the quality is not the best.
'High Quality' meant that you would get better quality but encoding would take longer.
'Professional Quality' meant that the final result was the best possible quality but that encoding would take the longest.
I do fairly long projects, 1 to 2 hours and I want to have the very best quality regardless of how long the encoding takes. I'm using a Mac Pro, and I quit all other applications before encoding.
I had been using 'Professional Quality' because I had thought that this spread the data over the entire DVD and gave the best quality.
I find these names confusing. I have searched Apple's website to find a clarification of the encoding choices, but have not found one.
What should I be using if I want the very best quality but do not care how long the encoding process takes?

Dont know if I worded the question properly.
I just bought a Sony HDR-CX350v. It is state of the art HD. I am wondering...? When I look at the quality of my recordings, its awesome. I import to PSE9 and burn to DVD and the quality is significantly less than straight to the camera. So it is recording via AVCHD...and then to PSE9 and then is it being compressed again to play on DVD? I checked all the settings and it doesnt seem to allow to burn at the same quality as I import from camera. Im sorry if this sounds extremely confusing or like I dont know all the variables...I dont. Hopefully I have articulated my situation enough and someone can figure out for me what I am asking. Thanks.

PRE will always rerender a file when creating an output, but you must choose one of the HiDef output formats. Saving to DVD will always (by definition) be StandardDef.

How avoid stretched image on DVD from HD source clips?

I edited a program in FCP 7.0 using HD footage from my Sony Handycam HDR-XR520. I exported to Compressor and followed the steps Shane sent in Shane's Stock Answer #42 on how to author a DVD. Thanks, Shane, I made the DVD. But the end images are all somewhat stretched out horizontally. Where did I go wrong? Where do I code this footage to come out in HD ratio but not be unnaturally stretched?

David, Thanks for your specific directions.
1. My Sony HD camera specs say its system is 1080/60i. The FCP Browser lists the Frame Size of the imported clips as 1440 x 1080.
2. Here I think I owe you and Shane an apology. I see that in the Browser, the Frame Size of my edited Sequence of these clips is listed as only 720 x 480. In my upgrade to FCP7 I had assumed that FCP recognized the frame size of the HD clips I was importing and would process them accordingly. But it looks like I needed to first specify the Sequence Settings. Is that true? Would it make a difference? If so, what should I set for Frame Size, Aspect Ratio, Pixel Aspect Ratio, Field Dominance? Should I check Anamorphic 16:9?
3. FYI, despite FCP describing the ratio of the Sequence as 720 x 480, the ratio of the images still appears to be 16:9.
4. I did as you directed and exported my edited Sequence as a QT Movie Self-Contained and looked at it. It was NOT distorted -- it looked just right. Cmnd-I shows the ratio to be 720 x 480, but it displays the 16:9 ratio images in a letterbox fashion.
5. If the settings in FCP need to be changed, can I do that globally or do I need to reedit the program?
6. If I simply took the Self Contained QT movie into Compressor and DVD SP, would the quality be as good as if I started with the right settings?

Significant slowness in data transfer from source DB to target DB

Hi DB Wizards,
     My customer is noticing significant slowness in Data copy from the Source DB to the Target DB. The copy process itself is using PL/SQL code along with cursors. The process is to copy across about 7M records from the source DB to the target DB as part of a complicated Data Migration process (this will be a onetime Go-Live process). I have also attached the AWR reports generated during the Data Migration process. Are there any recommendations to help improve the performance of the Data transfer process.

Creating a PAL DVD from NTSC Video camcorder

Can the latest version of iMovie create a PAL DVD from NTSC Video camcorder? What are best practices and workflow to create a PAL DVD from NTSC sources.

iMovie doesn't create DVDs, iDVD does..
in iM's prefs, set Video to 30fps = NTSC
quit and relaunch to take changes in effect
in iDVD's prefs, set Video to 25fps = PAL
quit and relaunch to take changes in effect
when finished with editing in iM, Share to Mediabrowser
in iDVD, select a theme, grab movies from Mediabrowser
burned DVD will be PAL ..

PAL DVD from NTSC original

Hi,
Just got DVD SP 4 and had a question. I heard from someone that you could make a PAL DVD from NTSC source footage in DVD SP 4 in one easy step...is this true?
I kinda poked around but didn't see a magic button that seemed to do this...
I have a DVD with NTSC footage...it's an auto-play with no menus, just an 8 minute video. Do I need to make a PAL version of the footage outside of DVD SP 4 or is there something in the program that does this for me?

Is this something only available in Compressor? When I export via Quicktime Pro from within FCP4, I can choose to convert to PAL from NTSC or vice-versa and it looks okay to me. Does Compressor do anything special when it comes to format conversion that QTPro doesn't do? The frame-blending (if necessary) and scaling seems to be done in QTPro, so I can't think of anything else Compressor could do to come up with a better result. Of course I'm also one of the many who keep getting the "Unable to connect to background process" error, so I don't think Compressor is an option for me.

Burn Highest Quality DVD from iMovie '11 where source is from DV tapes?

Hello everyone -- I'm hoping to find an answer that isn't too wildly technical and doesn't discuss the HD aspect of things.
I recently used the Share --> iDVD method and the results were pretty bad. It looked unsaturated, bland, pale, and blah. But any clips with increased contrast or saturation (changed within the editing process) looked jaggy and pixelly. In one clip, I lowered the exposure and brightness of rippling waves in water so they were very dark. It looked great within iMovie, looked like pixellated psychedelic nausea-inducing goofiness after I exported it, and truly appalling on the DVD.
The source video isn't brilliant, but when I make a Quicktime movie of it (using Share --> Export Using Quicktime, i think default settings) it looks OK. (except for those waves.)
I'm using an iMac running 10.8.1, Snow Leopard, and iMovie '11. iDVD is 7.1.2
I also have Roxio Toast 10 Titanium.
Also, I used whatever the default settings are to capture the source video from a now-old Canon DV camera. Was that a mistake -- are there special settings I should dig up?

Technically, it is a different process.
When you use SHARE/EXPORT MOVIE or SHARE/MEDIA BROWSER, iMovie creates you finished movie in H.264. When you use SHARE to IDVD, iMovie creates an intermediate movie for use only in iDVD that is in DV codec (or AIC codec if the original footage was HD).
Intuitively, it would seem that staying in DV would give better results, but my experience has been the opposite.

I have a Premiere Pro project in 1080p 24 fps, and I have exported this as MPEG2-DVD (PAL Widescreen) in order to use this in Encore to create a DVD. I have the option of either 25 fps or 'Automatic (based on source)' for the framerate.
I tried both, but it seems they both result in 25 fps (when checking in Windows properties). These look choppy when played on my PC (I assume it's because it's missing one frame) - so what I did was to use 25 fps and enabled 'Use Frame Blending', which made it smooth, but also a bit more blurry when the camera is moving. I may have to accept this, but it would of course be nice if I could get rid of it
So I was wondering if there are any better solutions for creating this DVD from my 24 fps source?

For interviews I can of course bring it in various formats - but I'm going to be sending out DVDs by post to a few companies (some ask specifically for a DVD, else I would just send a link to my Vimeo channel), so I don't have the option of sending multiple formats here (would get too confusing I think).
If the DVD doesn't play on their setup for some reason it's probably likely that they will just skip my application.
What I did do was to put an h264 HD version on the disc too, which could be played if watching the DVD on a PC - though it's probably going to be the SD version that will be seen as this starts automatically when you insert the disc.
I think it's a little weird that there aren't any options of exporting it to 25p with a speed-up instead of the thing it's doing now (I'm guessing it's repeating one frame every 25 frames which causes the choppy playback).

Commercial DVDs are generally encrypted. In the U.S., it's illegal to break that encryption. Because of that, the Terms of Use of this forum prohibits discussion of software or methods.
If the DVD is not encrypted, Handbrake is probably the most commonly recommended software.

I would suggest that problems with the same symptoms can (often do) have different causes. And the each case should be evaluated
using the details specific to the source media and the computer environment. And, your computer environment focus appears to be Mac based

I am strictly an Elements Windows user who has never worked with Premiere Elements Mac.
Although I realize that some of the features of Premiere Elements Windows and Mac are different, the two programs
have much in common. And, I realize the preference of Mac for files that use the .mp4 or .mov container with the equal

H.264.mp4 file has been and should be compatible with Premiere Elements 12/12.1 Windows and Mac. But, we need to define

In this case, we do not yet know the video and audio compression that goes with the .mp4 container.

Help with getting high quality DVDs from AVCHD footage

I know enough about video editing with PE7 to be dangerous, and was hoping someone could help me out.
My question is regarding getting the highest quality standard DVD from AVCHD footage. I have a Sony HDR-SR12 camcorder recording in AVCHD. I am editing footage natively in AVCHD with PE7 on a quad core system. No problem with that. However, when I export to standard DVD the quality of the video goes down drastically. (Yes, I know burning to Blu-ray would give me higher quality, but I am giving this DVD to a friend who doesn't have Blu-ray).
So far I have tried starting my project in both HD 1080i 30 5.1 channel:
General

This is where my knowledge is lacking...how can I get the best quality output from my AVCHD onto a standard DVD? Is there some format I can convert to first, and then burn to DVD? Also, I am willing to break the footage into a couple of DVDs to improve the quality, but I don't know how or what to do for that.
My footage looks REALLY great when viewing from the HDR-SR12 direct to HD TV with HDMI cable, but not very good on the DVD. My footage is of a ballet recital, and I lose definition in the faces, costumes, etc on the DVD output.

This may be a year late, but as I have been pulling my hair out trying to solve this problem for the last 48 hours I finally did find somewhat of a work around, but it requires Adobe PP CS4.2.
There is a plug-in here:

Which will actually output your edit as an AVCHD file. You can then burn this straight to an AVCHD using Nero 9 and keep the highquality level of your clips and not need Blu-Ray. The DVD player will need to be AVCHD capable, but I just bought one of those for $40 as compared to the $200+ of most Blu-Ray players.
