Significant Speed drop on long line after Contract...

Hi,
I called BT in November and got my Bill reduced.
I have always had a slow connection, but we are over 10 miles from the nearest exchange, I believe, Cookstown.
Despite this, it was always 'steady' and usable.
I checked it by doing the same things as I always do, and the speed has dropped by a factor of 3 or 4, at least.
I use to hit bbc.co.uk with approx. 50ms RTT, and that *never* changed.
Now, I get anything from 60 - 1500, avearging at approx 400ms.
This is waht I get when I run the bt speedtester:
Download speedachieved during the test was - 103 Kbps For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 50-250 Kbps. Additional Information: Your DSL Connection Rate :224 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM) IP Profile for your line is - 135 Kbps
I subsequently installed a BT Home Hub.
Nothing else has changed within the house.
No change regarding speed.
I have called BT on this.
Could the call/Bill rearrangement  have changed anything?
Thanks.

Thanks to Guilbo and everyone who responded:

I am connected to master socket. This socket has a bb accelorator installed (by BT). Any other telephone sockets int eh house are unused, with bb filters inserted.
I have not done the quiet line test. I only want this back to the way it was, prior to November. The only change since, was the BT Home hub, and as I say, it has made no difference.
One I installd the home hub, a few weeks before Christmas, I stopped turning the router off at night. Interstingly, it shoows a connection time of approx 5 hours, it has not been powered of during that time. As someone else has suggested, I seem to be loosing my connection periodically.
Browns:
On my last call with BT, they suggested this. I no longer power the router (either Home hub or it's predecessor) off at night, or any time. See above. Still dropping connections.
John46:
POint taken. See above.
Giuilbo:
Guillbo, I realise it isn't going to get much better, but it is all comparative. It was significantly (comparatively) better prior to renewing my contract.

  • Connection speeds dropped and noisy line

    Hi there,
We will be calling BT tomorrow about this as we have had some crackling noise on our phone line over the past few days and the noise margin has shot up and the speed dropped, broadband connections keeps dropping randomly and sometimes the speed drops to 2mb instead of the usual 18-19mb I get.
When I plug the phone directly into the socket I hear no noise on the line at all, when I plug the phone into the ADSL adapter I still hear no noise, when I plug the router into the ADSL adapter I start to hear noise when the router starts to connect up.
Dont have a replacement adapter tonight to test this theory so thought I would throw it out there for experienced users to comment on.
    Thoughts?
As I said before my noise margin has went up quite a bit since this issue.

The noise margin will normally fluctuate but only very small amounts. You should find that noise margin is higher about lunchtime and as it get dark and more use the phoenline then noise margin starts to reduce and get lowest about 11/12pm and then the cycle starts again

  • Infinity speeds drop to 2.8Mb after 6 months.

    Hey,
As everyone else experiences after BT have you signed up into a contract I am now facing horrible speeds of:
    >
Download speedachieved during the test was - 2840 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 12000-18720 Kbps .
    Additional Information:
IP Profile for your line is -18720 Kbps
I do find it amusing how every ISP keeps a new customer happy for a few months then totally disregards them. I've heard people in the industry claim that ISPs can manage where bandwidth goes and considering the same thing has happened with AOL, O2, Be and now BT I could actually believe it.
Anyway, enough ranting. The problem is my IP profile has been steadily decreasing over the few months I have had Infinity and now I've ended up 2840kbps...
This speed for "super fast fibre optic broadband!!!!" simply isn't good enough, especially when paying an enormous £42.50 a month to BT. Perhaps a cut on the advertising and expansion is in order until you can actually withstand the customers you have just now.
    Help me.

Update: Very interestingly I just ran speedtest.net and speedtester.bt.com on the livingroom computer and got very different results.
Download speedachieved during the test was - 14779 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 12000-18720 Kbps .
     Additional Information:
IP Profile for your line is -18720 Kbps
14779 Kbps. Had I got that on my bedroom computer I wouldn't have wrote this complaint even though it is still pretty slow considering I'm not that far from the green box.
Both are desktop computers connected to the HH3 via ethernet cable. I'm fairly sure the inital problem isn't with the cable though it could be...However, due to the wall now being plastered over, I cannot replace it.

  • Take ownership of a single line after contract done

how do i assume liability/ownership for my single line off of an existing family plan if my contract has already expired?   can it be done in store at time of upgrade, starting new contract? or online? or by phone?  thanks!

This can be done in the store (be sure it is a corporate store, use the Store Locator top right of the screen); I've done this with my children when they took their lines and started their own accounts.  You can start your account and upgrade at the same time in a store, all in one transaction.
Since you will need to do the Assumption of Liability in person, it's just as easy to do the whole upgrade at the same time in the store.  You can do just the AOL and then upgrade later , online or over the phone if you want, but the AOL is done in person.

  • Bt infinity speed dropping how long should I wait ...

Hi all new customer here with infinity vision and unimited phone calls , we are only on our 4 day with bt , I sort of understand I have to wait for it to stabilise but on the day we were getting 47 down and 8 up but he said this will drop slightly as was running at 100% ?? , but anyhow tonight seems to be really slow long loading times etc sports test tonight was 10 down 1 up should I worry or wait? Thanks again

one way is to do a speedtest at www.speedtester.bt.com and choose the adsl/fttc diagnostics button
it gives you your ip profile on completion

  • How to increase your speed on long lines

After 4 engineer visits and everyone saying that at 1300m from the cabinet 12mb was going to be the best speed I could get I have found a way to nearly double my speed. Dumped the homehub5 and replaced it with a Billion 8800NL and now have a steady 21.5mb and not one dropped connection.
So if you are on a longer line its worth a try for £68 from Amazon.
Thought I would share this as I found it so frustrating that I could get nowhere near the speed I was sold now im just 1mb away from the lower estimate so I can live with that.

That's an amazing speed for your attenuation

  • Sudden Line Speed Drop

So had infinity installed at the beginning of the month. Initial speed was 50mbps which the engineer said should stay as it was a clean line with minimal crc errors. He did notice a branch 'hanging' on my line and suggested it wouldn't help especially with the wind etc
So after the 7-10 day profile period I end up with 45Mb, which I'm more than happy with. However, now I've suddenly (overnight) dropped to around 30mbps for no reason. The only thing that's happened is me getting someone in to remove the branch from the tree that was hanging on the line.
I spoke to Customer Service today who told me that they will re-profile the line, but after some investigation I think this itsn't the case as they cant do it (quality!!)
Is there a way to get my line re-profiled or get the speed back that the line had settled down to?
On another note, the engineer did question why I'm in the cabinet I am as there's one much closer, is there a way to get moved?
    Thanks in advance

  • Broadband speed drop since line fault repair

We have recently had a phone line fault fixed but after more than 3 days  the broadband speed has been lower than it was during the fault and less than half its original speed.
Pre-line issue downstream was around the 16,500kbps with some drops down to 13,000kbps. The line developed a fault which started causing dc's and the phone line became noise with constant cracking and rustling sounds which turned out to be a damage connector causing water to corrode the cables, during that time when active broadband speeds dropped but while connected gave 9726kbps download and 888kbps upload, the phone line was fixed on friday the 15th of January and the phone line itself is very quiet, better than its been in maybe years, no noise that i can hear at all. However the connection dropped out during the night after the line was fixed and came back at 6652kbps down and 440kbps up, it remained at this speed for atleast 3 days then the router reconnected at 6652kbps down with 888kbps up were it remained until this morning, the router reconnected again at exactly the same speed.
I can understand it dropping originally due to the fault but has had over 72hrs connected but the speed has not increased, infact the speed is slower than with the fault which makes very little sense but i suspect is something to do with the noise margin, I include router and btw reports. Hopefully I can get some help with this.
    Thanks

This was the 1 and only connection change, should have posted the stats las tnight to show 2days 12+hrs before I went to bed

Nothing. It's nothing to do with PSE; this is a limitation of Photos, as is the loss of being able to use an external editor without exporting copies of your images.

  • MacBook Air 2010 network speed drop sharply after download starts

My MBA 2010 started having network issue a few month ago. The symptom is:
    1. Sometime, the network speed (both in and out) drops to 0B/sec suddenly and all connection died, then comes back after a few sec.
    2. When downloading large files, the initial download speed was great, 2MB/s, but sharply dropped to 20KB/s after a few sec. And never increase.
I have another MacBook Pro on the same home network. Never had such issues with it. I also tried to download the same file from both machines at the same time or one after another. No matter which way, my MBP can consistently have 2MB/s speed, but my MBA only had 20K/s.
I had this issue with MBA when it was running snow leopard. And I thought it may deal with OS. So just upgraded to Mountain Lion (clean install). But still the same issue.
But when speedtesting with www.speedtest.net, MBA still works pretty good, 18mbps download, 4mbps upload. This really confuses me. I begin to suspect if my airport adapter is broken or getting flaky. Any help or suggestion will be appreciated.

Ok, when I take the MacBook Air into the room with the Airport Express the Internet Connection works well and the Airport Utility shows the Phy Connection as 802.11 a / n as opposed to 802.11 b / g / n
Does this tell me anything about why when connected to the Network via the Airport Express that I am having trouble connecting to almost any URL?  Sometimes it connects but very slowly.  When I do get through to the Speedtest things look Ok but with some serious valleys in the graphic.

Many of my System Preferences will no longer work after installing Mountain Lion. Software Update, Startup Disk, iCloud, Time Machine, Notifications, etc. no longer will launch even though they do show their icons in the system preferences window. I keep getting a drop down window saying I must restart system preferences in order to use with a "Cancel" or "OK" choice. After I click on "OK" the window just keeps reappearing with the same choices and the pane I wish to use still remains inoperative. Third party preference panes DO work.
Reinstalling OSX Mountain Lion did not help. Neither did throwing away preferences.plist.

    Hi Jeff,
Tried to reply with my iPhone but not easy! Anyway, back on the laptop now. Yes the crash was bad but Tek support at Prism Sound was really good. In the end I rebuilt the whole system on a new disk which took a couple of days with all the plugins, softsynths etc.... but there seemed to be no alternative in my case, and this was agreed with Prism sound as being the only alternative left to me. I still don't really know what caused the crash but ML and Orpheus are both working fine now. Let's face it, you'll have to update at sometime..maybe best to pick some time between projects On balance, I suspect that my problems were unique to my system and that your installation will go ok.
    Hope it goes well,

  • WRT330N slow cable internet, speed drops significantly

I have been using a new WRT330N gaming router with firmware 1.00.4 and one day the connection speed drops to 10kb/s download speeds from every connected device(xbox360, vista, xp). I turned off the WRT330N router and connected my old WRT54G speedbooster router and my connection is back to 800kb/s. I did a factory restore to the 330N but after about 40 minutes the speed drops to 10kb/s again... I can't seem to figure out what is causing this to happen when my other router works just fine.

If possible try upgrading the firmware of the router keep on holding tightly the reset button in such a way that power light is blinking on the router & then do a complete network power cycle i.e., unplug the power cables from the modem & from the router & then plug in the power cable to the modem first once all the lights are solid green you could plug in the power cable to the router & check out it will definately work!!
Also, you need to do the advanced wireless settings such as Radio Band Frequency to 50,Frag thres=2306 & Rts thres=2307 & then uncheck a Block Anonymous Internet Requests & it will definately work!!!

  • FileSharing Transfer Speed Drops after sharing internet connection

    Hi Folks
Sometimes, when I copy files via FileSharing,
the speed drops exactly to the max. upload speed my internet connection has.
    = instead of 12 MB/s I got 600 ~700 KB/s.
I needed a bit of work to see this connection.
But after a while, it changes back to normal.
However, I did share the ethernet-internet-connection from one machine via WiFi (to surf with an iPod Touch).
Could that initiate this problem? I believe so.
    Internet-Provider is cablecom, switzerland, zurich.
I use a Zyxel Ethernet Switch to connect  two macs with the cablecom-modem (and together).
So Idetached the cablecom-modem from the ZyXel Switch and restarted both machines.
Now, the copy-action via filesharing has the expected full speed. (Just no internet, of course).
After that I connected the Cablecom-Modem again,
    restarted (PowerOff/On) the ZyXel Switch,
    and tried the same again:
    Now the speed is slow.
It seems that I really should NOT share the Ethernet Internet Connection with WiFi
Won't do that anymore because I often copy files from one machine to the other and this slow transfer speed kills me.
Why is that affecting the connection between two local machines?
How can I reset this to "normal".
I hope there is a way to do it in OS X instead of waiting until it sets itself  to "normal" from cablecom's side.
[ -Despite the fact that I should use a wireless router- ]
Is there any chance that this is an issue that OS X could resolve?
Best would probably be: the local connection between two machines should not be affected by the provider in any circumstances.
BTW: The cablecom-modem gives - via a ZyXel Switch - both computers unique IP's and they are reachable/visible from the internet.
