SIGs/Workshops/Conferences

I recently changed programming teams inside my company, and at last have a stipend for attending conferences, workshops, etc.
My interests are (o'course) Java use in and with reference to: web services, XML, J2ME, XP, test driven development, and emerging technology. I can only probably fit in one conference a quarter. I have to stay within the USA/Canada/Mexico. I'd like to hit NYC at least once a year.
My boss would like me to map out, in a general way, offerings I'm interested in for the coming year.
E3 is not an option BOOOO. Japan is off limits BOOOOO^2.
Planning on JavaOne for sure. What else would you all recommend?
I don't want to miss something sweet because I'm not on the right mailing list... Thanks.

Well, there's the Dukes. I'm heading home for the weekend in 1/2 hour. And I am actually not on call, this week anyway. We have both websphere and apache servers here. I have an IBM developerworks membership that's worth it's weight in gold. I've been keeping an ear out for suggestions over there.
My shop is gradually moving to more and more open source offerings. I think that's great as long as they are willing to recognize that open source projects as downloaded may only be more-or-less "as advertized" and may require considerable effort to put them in usable or useful shape for our implementation. You and I know there's never anything that's really free or cheap -- and sometimes the up-front cost of the service doesn't make the tool any more or less usable.
My boss is very dedicated to letting XP succeed in our shop, which is wonderful for me. We do test first, and rigorously, and team (or just as often group) programming is not for everybody, but I really love the give and take, the intensity and the exuberance.
If I could only convice corporate that paying so much attention to my clothes is a sick perversion on their part, I'd be really happy ;)
Time to go feed the iguana!
Have a good weekend yourself!

  • Looking for Apple training....

I'm an Apple Certified Mac Technician and love my job. Unfortunately I'm only one person running repair and the retail side of the store. I know there has to be some training courses that teach about the best ways to use GSX, updated repair tips and tricks, or just some sort of conference for Apple repair. I'm looking to learn/train to increase my overall knowledge and provide better support to my customers.
Anyone have or know any good training/courses/workshops/conferences for repair guys?

    Hi,
I have a new project deal I'm working on and my potential customer (and I) need more information on the salability of APEX; up to 10,000 simultaneous users. Is this being done anywhere? What's the best architecture? Any Example web sites?
    Thanks,

I know about a non-public APEX application the German T-Punkt shops are using.
Dietmar Aust (http://daust.blogspot.com/) was talking about it at the last DOAG APEX SIG workshop. They have 5.000 concurrent users using it every day. It's running on a Oracle RAC.

  • XML DB Conference/ Workshops

    Hi,
It will be really helpful if anyone could give me some url links that gives info on any future Oracle XML DB 11g related conference/workshops? Is there any mailing list or so to which I need to subscribe, to get frequent updates on these?
    Thanks in advance,
    Divya.

    Pooh...
Ehm, I guess/know that Oracle organizes from time to time hands-on-labs in the States. Not sure if Mark Drake can give you any extra info on that one...
I started a LinkedIn group for XMLDB, but not much activity yet there: http://www.linkedin.com/groups?mostPopular=&gid=3282943
You could follow up on where I hang around and try to get people hooked on XMLDB: http://www.liberidu.com/blog/ (upcoming appearances)
Was actually a good year for me regarding conference presentations, UKOUG (Birmingham) will be the last one, this year. Before that I have presented this year in: Dallas (Hotsos), 1-day masterclass in Dusseldorf, Germany (thanks to Oracle EMEA), Denmark (MOW), Washington DC (ODTUG Kaleidoscope), Michigan (MOS), San Francisco (OOW), Brussels Belgium (OPP2010) and as said, in two weeks time during UKOUG. Unsure how many people I have drawn into the dark side called XMLDB :-) LOL ;-) I tried to positively influence some conference content people (beer/bribes/threats), but until now without luck, to get more XMLDB topic presenters in there. I will probably present during ODTUG Kaleidoscope next year.
During Oracle Open World (OOW), there always pretty good hands on labs sessions. The practice material can be downloaded via the main XMLDB OTN site.
I also know that you can do a training course nowadays with Oracle University. There are also some Oracle learning courses on line via "Oracle by Example".
AFAIK there is not a mailing list as such, if so I would be interested as well...
Anyway. Hope to be of help (a little bit)

  • Which Workshops would motivate you to attend a conference?

I'm posting this because I would like input on what kind of workshops would bring the most interest to the next Hyperion Conference. Please post your level of interest on a scale of 1 - 10 for each (i.e. A=8, B=4, C=8, D=5).
    A) Installation workshop
    B) Workshop on developing in VB/VBA
    C) Workshop on Calc design and optimization
    D) Collaboration Workshop (pairing issues with answers)
Keep in mind that workshops would be limited in terms of what can be covered in a given time.
I plan on sharing this with next years Kaleidoscope commitee to help increase the participation and maximize the value -- OUCH, that sounds like the kind of think you'd read in a Dilbert comic...
    Thanks++

There are definite advantages of bringing a semi-technical group together for a couple items.
For instance, the VBA toolkit session would have been less stressful had the audience not been so far ranging in developer skills already... That was my mistake for not setting the expectations for it being an entry level presentation up front.
Anyway, I realize there are a lot more than the 4 options originally indicated and didn't intend to limit them outside of getting a feel for which ones would be best to "work up" as a suggestion.
I would like to go into more depth on a somewhat technical workshop based on creating a poor-man's failover for retrieves. Presenting a method for making 100% availability by transparently mapping the target database for the users -- both as a concept and a full implementation strategy.
I'd also like a second chance on the less technical presentation -- to do it right, lol.
However, I'm more interested in pushing the workshops into a full day track by themselves, where more than one hour would be presumed and the participants would need to come prepared.

  • Flashbelt Conference in Midwest

Robert Reinhardt. Danny Patterson. Moses Gunesch. Paul

What do they have in common? They all be giving sessions at

others great Flash and Flex related sessions.
The 5th Annual Flashbelt Conference is 3 weeks away. Adobe is
the Platinum Sponsor. It's the place to see rocks-star designers,
whiz-kid developers and best-selling authors all come together and
talk about Flash and related topics. The speaker line up is amazing
and the size (limited to 400 attendees) is sure to make for an
    incredible conference experience.

    Hi Tom,
There are quite a few good Flash conferences out there, but
not many that are just 100% training.
I produce the flashbelt conference, so I'm biased and think
    it's a great event.
    www.flashbelt.com
We have content along 3 tracks, with one focused on design
and concepts, one focused on development, and one that catches the
rest of the content like business, art, inspiration and other
software tools. About 75% of the sessions are design to teach
attendees skills on the spot. Plus we have 3 day-long workshops set
up this year. Learning ActionScript 3, Video for Flash, and
    Papervision 3D.
Other conferences with good track records and content are
Flash on the Beach, and FITC.
For more involved general training you might need to look at
companies rather than conferences. www.easeltraining.com is the
best place I can think of here in the midwest.

  • ODTUG - Hyperion SIG

Below is a copy of a letter that can be found on the ODTUG Hyperion SIG site (www.ODTUG.com), please take a minute to read when you have a chance.
    Thanks
    August 1, 2009
    Dear ODTUG Members,
My name is Gary Crisci and I am the new president of the Oracle Development Tools User Group - Hyperion Special Interest Group. I wanted to take a moment of your time to introduce myself and the rest of the board and tell you a little bit about the ODTUG Hyperion SIG and what our plans are for this year.
Our SIG board is made up of some of the most talented individuals in this field. Angela Wilcox of JC Penney is our Secretary and Cameron Lackpour of InterRel is our website coordinator. Other members of the board are Doug Bliss of Ace Cash Express, Natalie Delemar of Randstad, Quinlan Eddy of Star Analytics, Jeff McAhren of HealthMarkets, Edward Roske of InterRel, Tim Tow of Applied OLAP, and John Weimar of Kerdock Consulting. I’m sure many of you recognize most of these names and would agree we have some of the best Hyperion talent on our board. We are also privileged to have Al Marciante of Oracle as a board advisor.
As president of the Hyperion SIG, my primary role is to lead the committee that organizes the Hyperion content for the Kaleidoscope conference and this is something the board and I are already working on. Kaleidoscope 2009 was a huge success. We were one of the only conferences this year to increase our attendance despite one of the worst economic climates in recent history. This is a testament to the quality of the speakers, presentations, and training featured at the Kaleidoscope conference. If you have not already checked it out, I would recommend going to the Kaleidoscope website (http://www.odtugkaleidoscope.com/) and having a look around. Our goal is to make Kaleidoscope 2010 an even bigger success, with more speakers, more presentation tracks, more vendors, and more attendees. Kaleidoscope has become the conference for Essbase developers, and as an Essbase developer I can assure you this will remain one of the primary focuses of the conference. However, the board and I plan to expand our scope further next year to provide more content for other areas of the Hyperion suite such as Planning, HFM/Enterprise, and our new friends at OBI. As developers, many of us on the board have worked on financial consolidation projects and recognize the development efforts that go into an HFM roll out. The developers that work on these projects are talented technicians and deserve a place to network and expand their skill set. We will provide them this opportunity at Kaleidoscope 2010.
I would like to ask all of you to start thinking about what you would like to see at Kaleidoscope next year and encourage you to reach out to me and the rest of the SIG board. The Kaleidoscope conference is your conference and I hope you will participate in helping us make it the best it can be. This invitation goes out to all members and non-members as well as vendors. In addition to building up user attendance at the conference, I have also made it a goal to increase vendor participation this year. So if you are a consultant or vendor, please reach out to us with your ideas.
Beyond the Kaleidoscope conference, one of my other major goals as president is to increase our SIG’s membership. If you are not a member of the ODTUG – Hyperion SIG, I would like to invite you to visit our SIG website (http://www.odtug.com/apex/f?p=500:320:0::::P320_SIG_ID:121) and consider becoming a member. ODTUG offers two membership types. There are paid members and associate members (associate membership is free). Paid members get the benefit of premium content and discounts to ODTUG events such as Kaleidoscope. Becoming a member of an industry group is one of the best things you can do for your career. I have personally gained so much from my industry affiliations. Beyond the networking opportunities and access to industry information, it is also something valuable to add to your resume. Participation in an industry group shows a dedication to your craft and represents you as a serious professional. I encourage all of you to join us if you are not currently a member. Additionally, please join the ODTUG Linkedin group (http://www.linkedin.com/groups?gid=1796201) as another way to be kept in the loop on communications with the board.
Lastly, I would like to take the opportunity to thank those of you who voted me back onto the board this year, and I would like to thank the Hyperion SIG board for entrusting me with the role of president. I consider it a privilege to serve on this board and in this capacity. I would also like to thank our outgoing president Edward Roske. Edward has committed himself, and his company, to the ODTUG Hyperion SIG in a way few individuals do. His tireless efforts have led to Kaleidoscope being the premier Hyperion conference and I can only hope to do as good a job as he has done. Lastly, I would like to thank the ODTUG board of directors for their overwhelming support of our group. ODTUG has stepped up in a way no other organization has to support the Hyperion community and their support has been unwavering. They have given us the opportunity to bring our culture and integrate it with their unique philosophy of how a user base community should be served, with an emphasis on training, and focus on the development of the individual. The enthusiasm demonstrated by ODTUG for Hyperion would lead you to believe they have been working with us for many years. They have truly welcomed us into their family and we appreciate it.
I would like to thank you for your participation in the ODTUG Hyperion SIG; our members are what make our group the best in the industry. Please do not hesitate to reach out to myself or any other member of the board if there is anything we can do for you.
    Best regards,

  • Interesting Information about Hyperion User Groups and Conferences

Ed Roske has an interesting post on his blog, including a letter from John Kopcke (SVP of EPM at Oracle). There is a lot of content discussing the disbandment of the Hyperion User Groups and the absorption by OAUG with the new Hyperion SIG (Special Interest Group). In addition there is discussion of conference's focusing on Hyperion content.

I have the same problem, Absolute death; I've been reading the forums for hours now and still no technique that helps.
I tried charging to the wall for some hours and then connecting to the PC, but no luck.
Both softwares ask you to plug the cellphone while it's off and while pressing the down volume buttom.
I do manage to get a blue light when I'm pressing one of the buttons (at this point I already forgot which is which; so I try with both always), but nothing else happens and the phone never gets detected by either of programs.
I do not know how to turn off the phone; maybe I'm always plugin it when it's on.
    Any ideas ?

  • Hyperion SIG Elections Start Today!

This week ODTUG holds it's annual Hyperion SIG Elections. No matter who you vote for, I really hope you'll vote in the election. There is a collection of great folks running. The list includes several friends, associates, and compatriots. However, I hope after reading my running statements below, your decision will be a bit easier.
While I normally much prefer the "in the trenches doing" part over "self promotion", I want to take this time to self promote so that, if elected, I'll be able to DO even more.
Technology & service has been an integral part of my life for over 20 years, EPM products specifically for over 12 years. My ever growing passion for the Hyperion technology has reached the point, after consulting & developing for 12 years, that now I'm building a software product designed to make using and administering these products an even greater joy.
I've also found a great fit in ODTUG and the people who serve within it. By serving on the Hyperion SIG I can give back far more than just helping to stuff bags at the conference and helping with ambassador needs (yes, if you had a bag at KScope, it probably had some of my sweat on it).
As a business owner and independent software vendor I have the time, energy, experience, and freedom to be a willing steward for the ODTUG community and a dedicated, capable, and energetic contribute to the Hyperion SIG.
While these statements are more about the election, my overall dedication to ODTUG doesn't begin and end with the SIG; I will continue to contribute as a volunteer regardless of the election results, but I'm sure I'll be able to provide you the greatest level of service as part of the Hyperion SIG. Thanks for your support."
    Regards,
    Robb Salzmann
    www.odtug.com

Thank you voters for coming out in a very tight election, We have three new members of the Hyperion SIG board. Robb, Courtney Foster and Kevin Cox. Congratulations to them all. We had a good voter turnout and it was nice that so many were interested in helping on the board
